Use Case: I am walking my 2022 Tesla Model 3 (Dual Motor, Long Range Battery) with Full Self Driving, like a puppy.

folarin1 | 2026-02-05 01:15 | 53 views

Cold Toronto winter morning, around 3:00 a.m., Pearson Airport parking lot. I tried an interesting Summon use case: instead of standing still, I kept walking while the car followed me. As my position changed, the car continuously recalculated and adjusted its path to maintain distance. Most Summon demos involve the user standing in one spot. In this case, I was moving the entire time, and the car respected parking-lot rules—avoiding cutting across parking spaces and instead navigating around them before coming to me. You’ll notice the headlights flash once at the start (Summon ready), and an audible sound at the end when the run completes. Camera work is rough—it was freezing—but the behavior itself was what I wanted to observe. Curious what others think about this kind of moving-target Summon use.

I use it every day to pick up myself and my dog from the path. It’s only tried to yeet itself off an embankment once

folarin1 2026-02-05 09:18

Toronto’s parking lot—Pearson Airport. I had looked at all the scenarios, and I knew the car would treat me gently. My car was taking the right lane. In fact, any car driving near mine would have assumed there was somebody inside. The only thing that could have gone wrong was another car hitting me. My car would never hit me—it always maintains a safe distance. As for other cars, in Canada the law strongly protects pedestrians, and drivers are very conscious of that. Pedestrians don’t just get run over. So, as far as possible, I had thought through all the scenarios and risks, and I felt comfortable with it. I even did this in absolutely cold weather because I wanted to stretch the test case and confirm that, even in bad weather, my car could come pick me up. That, to me, is another safety feature. I love the subreddit What Could Go Wrong, so please cross-post this there. I want conversation. I want to hear people talk. I appreciate you putting this up—thank you so much. But truly, nothing was going to go wrong. Tesla designs for safety—maximum safety. Honestly, I give myself a prize for figuring out a use case I personally haven’t seen anyone else do on YouTube. If you’ve seen someone do this before, please let me know. Please post if you have.

Could've done without the gum chewing 🙉

natebookair 2026-02-05 10:18

Cool I guess? I’d rather just be in the warm car than have it following me though.

eried 2026-02-05 10:24

That is always the case in EU, we have the regulators to limit the distance to 6 meter, so basically it cant be used.

Key_Thought1305 2026-02-05 12:47

If you are going to make a video where you are talking within a few inches of your phone, spit your gum out. Instantly stopped the video once I heard it.

folarin1 2026-02-05 12:48

I know sorry about that. I heard that too in the first few seconds. My bad y’all. 😞😀

folarin1 2026-02-05 12:49

Sorry about that.

Haha all good man, just giving ya a hard time. 😁

mattsurl 2026-02-05 14:38

You could also walk right next to it and it will keep going. I tried this in a mall parking lot when ass first came out.

songbolt 2026-02-05 17:49

"use case" should refer to actual need being met, not wasting resources

htdwps 2026-02-05 23:43

ASS was slower than a dog so I stopped even trying. In a regular busy parking lot I started to feel bad for the people waiting for the car to do its thing. Normally you can wave people to go first if you’re slow and about to do a curbside pick up but this thing obviously can’t provide driver cues and intentions.

ARK_coin 2026-02-06 01:08

Tony Stark used to do that all the time. You are now Tony Stark.

goodvibezone 2026-02-06 03:10

Referral banner can be swiped away btw

SkoobyDoobyDo 2026-02-06 04:01

Most useless feature. Doesnt work half the time, is risky when works, and has a range that one can walk faster by the time car wakes up and comes to the person.

folarin1 2026-02-06 05:26

Fun and personal satisfaction is a good use case :). I’m sure you’ll agree 🙂

folarin1 2026-02-06 05:27

I recorded this video within the last year or two so at that time you said it wasn’t impossible. But glad to know that yours worked can’t give us more information. Maybe what version of FSD are you referring to?

folarin1 2026-02-06 05:27

Or more information about the Smart Summon version or anything you’d like to say.

folarin1 2026-02-06 05:29

Advanced smart someone is slower than a dog. And the regular busy parking lot does it is inconvenient to other cars just trying to move a normal parking lot speed. Correcting my sentence (my thanks to Daisy, my personal Digital AI assistant): Advanced Smart Summon is extremely slow—slower than a walking dog. In a regular, busy parking lot, it becomes inconvenient and disruptive to other drivers who are simply trying to move at normal parking-lot speeds

folarin1 2026-02-06 05:30

That is correct Tony Stark used to do this and now I am Tony Stark, and we are too. You are Tony Stark. You are Tony Stark. You are Iron Man. (Using Oprah’s gift giving voice). You get a robot. You get a Tesla. You get Optimus. Thanks for the fun and intelligent comment.

folarin1 2026-02-06 05:35

Who’s referral banner? Pls clarify 🙂

folarin1 2026-02-06 05:41

I could reply this way. Version 1: Smart Summon isn’t Tesla’s most important feature—and that’s okay. It’s improved meaningfully over time, and in bad weather, crowded parking lots, or family situations, it solves a real problem. Not everything has to be top priority to be worthwhile. I could also reply this way Version 2: I get where you’re coming from, and you’re not wrong. If we ranked every feature in the car by importance, Smart Summon probably wouldn’t be near the top, especially compared to safety and core driving features. That said, I’ve actually seen it improve quite a bit over the years, and in certain situations—bad weather, slippery parking lots, kids or passengers waiting inside while someone grabs the car—it’s genuinely useful. Not essential, but convenient when the conditions call for it. So I think both things can be true: it’s not a high-priority feature for Tesla, and it’s also not useless. Appreciate the perspective. Which reply do you prefer :) which one makes you feel better as a Tesla Expert ? (No sarcasm) Let’s A-B test my response. Anybody can reply.

htdwps 2026-02-06 05:58

Yah I didn’t find it useful in real world scenarios.

folarin1 2026-02-06 06:22

I love redditors. We are the most honest, most intelligent, and we want the best for one another. I love you all.

folarin1 2026-02-06 06:23

Yup, that's it sounded like I was doing in the first few seconds. Hahahahaha. Nice gif u/No-Ambassador-5920

folarin1 2026-02-06 06:24

What does, " yeet itself off an embankment once" mean please. I honestly don't know, and I do not want to 'google' it. Please u/moomoopoopoo :)

moomoopoopoo 2026-02-06 07:11

There is a large drainage ditch between the pedestrian path and the parking lot. My Model 3 is typically parked facing the ditch and will normally reverse, navigate toward the center of the lot, and then drive down a slope to pick me up. On one occasion, the vehicle indicated it was going to move forward directly toward the ditch when I activated the summon feature. I immediately released the button as soon as I noticed the forward motion!

goodvibezone 2026-02-06 13:31

In your video...there's a banner at the top.

mattsurl 2026-02-06 14:24

Are you replying to me? I posted a video walking next to my car on X last summer. I’ll see I can find it.

folarin1 2026-02-06 16:00

I understand that you’re saying that because this subreddit does not allow promotions of referral banners. in fact, you are quite incorrect because on the Tesla app on the iPhone that referral banner does not swipe to go away, even though it does look like it does. I’m glad you mentioned that though.

goodvibezone 2026-02-06 21:13

You're missing my point. Press and swipe and it goes away 😜

tameimponda 2026-02-07 05:19

Burst out laughing watching this

WerewolfAX 2026-02-07 11:41

And we basically need to stand right beside the car to use it, so except the "get out of tight spot to get in the car better" there's nothing you can do with it thanks to EU regulation madness. (For those wondering: we also have no FSD either, just the way less reliable old AP 🙄 ...

eried 2026-02-07 13:38

Remember that we pay the same for fsd 🤓 without fsd

Gold_Exchange_5588 2026-02-07 16:16

Literally game changer for when you forget to preheat lol stay warm walking instead of sitting in an ice box

word-dragon 2026-02-07 23:41

I guess you can just go jogging until you get tired and have the car there to take you home.

folarin1 2026-02-07 23:55

Well, anyway, that video was recorded a year or two ago so it’s in the past, but thanks for the tip

JamesPh94 2026-02-08 03:39

Are you Ubering at YYZ?

folarin1 2026-02-08 05:24

Correct. Smart. Here’s my philosophy to the world, not to James, but to those who don’t understand Ubering. Anybody can put their car on the Uber platform even if they have a well paying job…drive 1 hr a week, 5hrs or make it full time if you want, drive 0 hours, nobody will bother you. Also on Uber’s website, drivers are not called drivers, they are called “Uber Partners” which is actually what they are. The world merely created the former moniker for obvious reasons and denigrated that title and made it a negative connotation. Okay I’ve been wanting to get that off my chest to the Internet for years.

TheGrasshopper92 2026-02-08 10:13

I’ve done exactly this while smoking a cigarette after finishing a charge at a car dealership after hours. Wanted to get closer to the entrance after unplugging.

folarin1 2026-02-15 02:51

What do you think about, "My car is a boy and I know it". Do you think of your car as a boy or a girl or other, or you don't think about it.

folarin1 2026-02-17 20:02

Nice.

SkoobyDoobyDo 2026-02-18 04:20

I like v2. V1 mentions its useful in crowded parking lots, which is infact the worst place to use SS. Its unsafe and will take ages for the car to come to you. I agree, its not the important feature. But I guess its fine to have it.
