Is there a fix for the speed issue with FSD and HW3

Stridyr | 2026-01-27 19:52 | 25 views

I signed up for FSD for the first time and it works great! Except for the speed. I did some searching and found that this seemed a common issue about a year ago but I never saw anything about a fix. The thumbwheel can crank up the speed but the car will keep slowing down. Several times it pulled into the left lane to pass someone and actually slowed down! I had to keep my foot on the gas to maintain a stable speed. Even slows down on an empty road! Makes it pretty much useless. Any suggestions for fixes would be greatly appreciated, it works pretty well other than that. 2020 AWD/LR

Make sure you've set it to HURRY, other than that, thats just how the neural net drives on HW3, sorry.

Having the opposite issue 2021 P3 HW3 slightly too fast on FSD(standard). Didn’t know about the thumbwheel to slow a bit, thanks. Still learning 2nd week! Good luck

I have the slow thing happening. Set to hurry. And it likes sitting 5moh or so below my setpoint. That's great, I don't like sitting there. To I keep hitting the throttle to skip it up. Strange though, autopilot was fine, fsd drives slow, even in hurry. Sorry, places to see people to do.

Yeah, they gave it a personality for speed even in Hurry about a year ago. I miss when it would stick to 85 on the highways.

FSD for HW3 has not been updated since February last year. That update was the one that screwed up the speed control.

I do not have the speed slowing issue with my 2023 M3P in Standard setting on FSD. The vehicle keeps up with traffic even if over speed limit. Possible speed issue is not on all builds or models on FSD for HW3?

Heavy traffic is the one place the speed issue does not show up. When there is no car nearby, the car will slow down. When there is a single car in front, the car will change lanes to pass, then slow down. The most annoying is when the car pulls in front of an approaching car, and then slows down. FSD completely ignores the speed setting in the menu. It only pays attention to the max speed, but then it will randomly change that, sometimes to a speed much slower than traffic. Are you sure you have HW3? I would have thought a 2023 car would have HW4.

I had that problem on a cross country trip - kept wanting to do 139kph (86mph) in a 100 zone every time the speed limit changed. Turned out the max was set to that (recent update?) and once I set it to 10% over, no longer a problem. But I agree, on my HW3 latest FSD it would keep meandering down below set and I'd push the pedal to get back up to speed, then it would start to drop down again. Worse was it thinking the speed was 80 (50mph) on stretches of highway, probably because there had been construction there earlier in the year; and in my city, it thinks a lot of the sidestreets are 40k (25mph) probably because the map data was set as that by some passive-aggressive type at city hall who wants to lower speed limits. Meanwhile, I'm not using FSD much in winter when there are plenty of ice patches and packed snow, approaches to stop signs are especially slick. I don't trust it. there are times when the car should not do the speed limit - meaning it probably will.

It's been stupid for at least 2 years now.

Have not noted any slow down even on 45-55 mph low density roads. One issue is FSD seems to use left lanes for longer than passing and on couple occasions almost missed right exit requiring intervention. Also has faster than comfortable turning speeds. Also the GPS generated routing is not always the preferred. The intervention rate was higher and did have the slow downs on my end older 2017 MS. That is why mentioned may be model or build date issue in play. I do have HW3 missing HW4 by just few months.

I have had at least one incident of the car missing an exit. Got on the freeway one block before I needed to get off, car moved over 3 lanes to the far left lane, then tried to get all the way to the right again to make the exit, but there was too much traffic so it failed. I have also recorded two incidents of the car ignoring navigation and making a wrong turn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWPHqDrKcFQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKPtNqyhi78 FSD software for HW3 will be a year old next month. It appears to be abandoned by Tesla.

I have a local profile on my car which is identical to my main profile, except it uses Autopilot instead. I'll switch to that when on long highway stretches and then back off sometime later.

Hmm, that might make it useful! Thanks for the idea!
