Absurd tab renewal fees!

steven-aziz | 2026-01-24 23:55 | 371 views

Yay me! I get to pay the corrupt state of Washington $750 per year for the privilege of driving my own car 6 - 7,000 miles. Who else has had enough of this crap ⁉️

Electrification fee is absurd

evan002 2026-01-25 00:01

Welcome to Seattle!!!!!

TESLAMIZE 2026-01-25 00:02

Lol youre welcome to move to any other state.

jjp48 2026-01-25 00:03

Your paying for the new seattle transit. Remember to validate your cars value as their calculation tends to overvalue your car after a few years. Lowered mine by about half last year

Katmilla 2026-01-25 00:03

Yay! Me too in LA! +$50 for custom plate

digitaldisorder_ 2026-01-25 00:05

My renewal fee in Seattle was $1150. $750 just for RTA excise tax. So I updated my address to my other home in Snohomish and it dropped it to $343. Sweet Jesus.

El_Gringo_Chingon 2026-01-25 00:06

Nevada would like a word

Ryuzaki413 2026-01-25 00:09

At least you don’t have income tax!

Bubbly-Confection870 2026-01-25 00:09

Your leadership is following California

holtyrd 2026-01-25 00:10

$700 in SC too, on a 2019.

drunkandslurred 2026-01-25 00:10

Worst part is all this tax money gets mismanaged to hell and nothing good to show for it.

steven-aziz 2026-01-25 00:11

Don’t worry, that’s coming soon. The democrats want to start with a “millionaire’s tax,” but one of the representatives explicitly stated they’re working towards slowly bringing a standard income tax for all Washingtonians.

GHAFHA 2026-01-25 00:11

$1500 in Colorado !

steven-aziz 2026-01-25 00:12

They closed half of the busiest lanes of a perfectly-fine section of I-5 North for the ENTIRE 2026 calendar year. Only God knows how they’re burning that money.

SocraticBruin 2026-01-25 00:13

Normal

Dann__EV 2026-01-25 00:14

$300+ in New Jersey

steven-aziz 2026-01-25 00:14

No, I’m not abandoning my home. This state can be so much better than what it’s becoming. Moving to a new state would just trade one set of problems for another set of problems.

katgeek 2026-01-25 00:15

If you’re complaining about a 700 fee you’re nowhere close to being a millionaire lmfao. Also an income tax is forbidden by our constitution you bozo

steven-aziz 2026-01-25 00:16

I know it’s forbidden, but that’s not going to stop the activist judges from reinterpreting the constitution to fit whatever agenda the democrats want. Are you living under a rock??

ike0069 2026-01-25 00:16

Wow, I just paid $272 in TX and thats $200 extra because its electric. Excise tax is some serious BS.

DefinitelyNotSnek 2026-01-25 00:16

Mine is over $700 in Alabama because of the EV registration fee and annual ad valorem. At least he gets to live in Washington…

mostarsuushi 2026-01-25 00:17

so much for the green energy push

Beafybrian 2026-01-25 00:18

Dang I pay 400 for a 2020. Why so much ?

katgeek 2026-01-25 00:18

Then leave.

steven-aziz 2026-01-25 00:19

No. Make me.

Nreekay 2026-01-25 00:19

CT $1-200 I believe. This is fucking crazy.

2ROmon 2026-01-25 00:25

Jesus I only pay about 300 in GA due to custom plate.

magbarn 2026-01-25 00:27

California fees are the same. Texas relatives pay $122

cavey00 2026-01-25 00:30

That’s pretty much what it is here in NV. You’re gonna pay one way or another.

ddaarryynn 2026-01-25 00:32

It’s been like this for years. Owning two EVs, I initially had a similar reaction as you, but it actually isn’t so bad in most cases if you do the math. EVs are heavier than comparably sized non-EVs, causing more road wear, and we don’t pay any gas taxes. If you take an average annual miles of 12000-15000 miles, average fuel efficiency of 25-30 MPG (fairly efficient) and Seattle gas taxes being around 50 cents per gallon, they’re paying roughly $200-$300/yr in gas taxes, which is close to what you’re paying as an electrification fee. The unfair part for you is that you drive lower miles than average, and there isn’t a specific metered tax for EV charging as there is for fueling. Another way to make it more fair would be to add more tolls, so it is usage based, but that penalizes people who drive specific routes.

therealCatnuts 2026-01-25 00:32

With no gas taxes applied, I think $225 per car for road maintenance is entirely fair. And fwiw, my tags cost $700/yr without any EV fee. Different states get their taxes different ways, mine bones you on vehicle registration.

LoneStarGut 2026-01-25 00:33

In Texas we don't have an income tax, but our registration fees are about $75 per car per year, plus $200 for an EV. $275 total is not too bad.

G0_WEB_G0 2026-01-25 00:33

My renewal of my 7 year old model 3 is $608 this year. I'm in Nebraska. $150 of that is an alternative fuel tax. Registering here in general is expensive regardless though.

sdinvest 2026-01-25 00:36

Is it a surprise in your state?

steven-aziz 2026-01-25 00:39

I have bad news for you…..the RTA Excise tax applies to all cars, not just EVs 🫠

danrokk 2026-01-25 00:40

WilliePhistergash 2026-01-25 00:41

Whatever happened to $35 tabs that we the people voted for?

anderaj57 2026-01-25 00:47

I mean I live in King County too but the only fee that's specific to a Tesla is the $225 for it being electric, everyone pays the sound transit tax. My wife's Jeep is not much less.

WkndWarrior12345054 2026-01-25 00:47

how about California? new EV owner here, will I get a shock of bill over $1k?

Front-Yesterday-9455 2026-01-25 00:51

I’ve done research on consequences of not paying your tabs. At a 800/year in Iowa, the penalty is not severe enough (with my risk tolerance) to justify paying that much. Check back in a few years to see if I’m net positive.

OldFargoan 2026-01-25 00:51

You don't get second home money by not caring about $750. I assume anyway. My vacation home is a tent.

Important_silence 2026-01-25 00:55

Over $1,000 in Nevada

[deleted] 2026-01-25 00:56

Doesn’t it go towards improving public transit ? Personally that doesn’t bother me

Spiritual-Donut-7039 2026-01-25 00:59

As of July 1, 2025, the Washington state gas tax is 55.4 cents per gallon for unleaded fuel. Including the federal excise tax of 18.4 cents, drivers in Washington pay a combined minimum of 73.8 cents per gallon in taxes. Also every July 1st it goes up 2%, so its even higher than you calculated.

Pristine_Leading1595 2026-01-25 00:59

I pay about $700 for my 2019 m3lr. Cali

Sir_Justin 2026-01-25 00:59

I just paid $815 for a 2025 Model 3 in Nevada.

TheOnlyRealNerd 2026-01-25 01:35

gonna be about $600 this year in wisconsin, $100 regular vehicle fee, $175 extra fee for an electric vehicle in wisconsin, and then another $250 federal fee because of Trump and the big beautiful bill. Just unreal. It’s even more than what someone pays in gas tax.

billyoceans 2026-01-25 01:40

$331.50 to be exact

AdultingPains 2026-01-25 01:41

Wow! Seeing this really frustrates me because Washington states registration fees used to be through the roof in the late nineties, there then was some legislative changes and it was dropped to a fixed $30 registration. Somehow they managed to pump this up again. It’s really quite unacceptable and not everyone can afford it.

cowdog360 2026-01-25 01:41

I’m in Vancouver, WA and my renewal for my 2021 model 3 was $308. Seattle has a lot more tax for sure.

coolguy12314 2026-01-25 01:45

sonofabraham1 2026-01-25 01:54

So the solution is to leave instead of point out ridiculous over taxation? I bet you would never say that to an immigrant who criticized this country

I’m in Florida, no income tax, and only paid $92 for renewal

icy1007 2026-01-25 02:01

WA charges a tax based on the value of the vehicle. States that do that are crazy.

TESLAMIZE 2026-01-25 02:02

Ill gladly pay a few hundred more for my tabs that goes towards EV and light rail infrastructure than state income tax every day of the week.

Quick_Possibility_99 2026-01-25 02:02

That is in line with ca.

totalfarkuser 2026-01-25 02:03

Income taxes are progressive and help level the playing field. Sales and use taxes are regressive hurting the lower classes.

ballout_glo_300 2026-01-25 02:03

I’m curious as to what someone who lives in Maryland is paying

CAVU1331 2026-01-25 02:04

Similar to western Washington definitely not eastern Washington! I was looking at property tax for a similar property value and it was triple in Texas.

zyneman 2026-01-25 02:04

$150 for 2 years. NYC , no EV surcharge, no custom plates

PM_ME_YOUR_DANKNESS 2026-01-25 02:04

I love it when the average person gets so offended over the idea of taxing millionaires when they’re nowhere near close to being impacted by it.

VonBargenJL 2026-01-25 02:05

My $350 in MN feels a lot more reasonable. I was still upset over the $150 electric fee but I guess I'll manage seeing what everyone else is paying

dankmemer999 2026-01-25 02:08

Basically because we don’t pay gas tax. To be fair it comes with the privilege of being able to drive any of the highways of the whole country So yeah it’s expensive but what you get for it is worth it. Try doing some road trips

Old-Advertising-5316 2026-01-25 02:08

Don’t forget about the $200 per year federal tax. It will be added. We’re having an EV vehicle

LoneStarGut 2026-01-25 02:10

I am paying about $5500/year for a 4-bedroom house appraised at $380,000 but probably worth around $420,000. But I am in a well managed purple suburb. Taxes are much higher in Austin where they spend a significant amount on liberal priorities.

Old-Advertising-5316 2026-01-25 02:10

I have a 2024 model Y in my registration in California was $575.

ashhong 2026-01-25 02:13

Emotional-Buddy-2219 2026-01-25 02:13

Brutus713 2026-01-25 02:17

There are deductions.... whatever you see is probably the "retail" highest rate that basically nobody pays. Also, its highly variable based on county/city. True re: Western Washington... my TX house in Western Washington would cost double to triple what it costs here (in comparable neighborhoods)... and thus the property tax in WA would be higher even at the lower rate.

eat_more_bacon 2026-01-25 02:17

Tesla Model 3 and BMW 3 series are very close in weight for similar trims. I think it's mainly the truck/SUV EVs that are giant non-aerodynamic bricks with huge batteries for range that weigh so much more than their equivalents.

AngryGS 2026-01-25 02:18

Why can't these new fees be charged per miles like how ICE cars get charged per gas pump? Placing a fixed annual fees like this essentially is assuming each EV drive & use up the roads equally.

Astroportal_ 2026-01-25 02:19

My brother keeps telling me to start a shell company in montana and register my car to a PO box and write everything off. Apparently there is some loophole, but im too lazy.

[deleted] 2026-01-25 02:24

Yup. Outrageous. Washington here as well paying the same. Its supposed to pay for the "infrastructure of more charging stations". But let's be honest, its just an extra tax on ev cars.

ddaarryynn 2026-01-25 02:25

True, fairly close. And the gas taxes for one of those would be fairly close to the electrification fee in OP’s registration. The biggest issue for OP is they drive very low mile per year, but even at 6500 miles the differences would be $75/yr, which is less than they’d save on gas vs charging.

Own-Conference2265 2026-01-25 02:27

Dude, go to Virginia. You’re looking at $2k between registration, road use fees, and personal property taxes there every year. Move to Florida if you want close to zero / fees and taxes.

gnowbot 2026-01-25 02:29

What are you driving—model and year? This sounds like a new purchase tax + registration fees. I hope this is a new purchase! We have a model3 coming up for its third year of registration fees.

MemberOfOneBody 2026-01-25 03:16

You’re driving a 2025. Most states base fees on the value of the car. I paid $1200 on my 2024 in CO. Renewal a few months ago was half. I expect it to half again next year.

rjcarr 2026-01-25 03:17

What’s dumb is that “electrification” fee is the equivalent of driving like 50K miles in gas taxes for a standard sedan. I drive like 5-7K miles.

krenx88 2026-01-25 03:17

Is not $1500 in Colorado. Mine was $370.

runForestRun17 2026-01-25 03:21

CompleteGene82 2026-01-25 03:31

Lol, it's a price we all pay in every state.  Most people pay property tax, income tax and sales tax, in Washington you don't pay sales tax.  Is this a resurgence you are asking for?  what state is not corrupt?

Someone above said they pay about $700 for 2019 Model3LR. Wonder what the difference is from.

275 in Texas

mitch2888 2026-01-25 03:58

I live in texas. just got an ev and the yearly registration. Is $200 vs vs $78 for an ice. So 122 more, not 122 total. They justify it by saying it is offset lost gas tax. Seems reasonable. I save more in oil changes. But some of the other states are ridiculous, 350 or more...

W3rn3rZi3gl3r 2026-01-25 04:00

Damn I paid 300 in AZ and thought that was steep

EnanoAD 2026-01-25 04:00

Dang my 1 year old MY was only 800 in Colorado too

Dry_Situation_3582 2026-01-25 04:04

Reading the room, I feel like you just lost all credibility with your audience. Unless you were trying to prove how clueless you are. You sound like a FOX News parrot. Plain and simple, you're contradicting yourself by complaining about millionaires on your gripe post about car registration fees.

Electronic_Load_3651 2026-01-25 04:11

That’s it? In our County you pay insane fee for building a lightbulb, annually that’s about $1000 on a MY

South_Dakota_Boy 2026-01-25 04:14

We have a lot of roads to pay for.

MrBanjod2 2026-01-25 04:19

Jesus. Mine are 330 for a Polestar 2 in Edmonds. Must be King county versus Snohomish.

ForeverMinute7479 2026-01-25 04:21

For now. The banshees in Olympia are trying their best.

pocketdrummer 2026-01-25 04:21

You poor baby.

South_Dakota_Boy 2026-01-25 04:23

I’m pretty happy in Eastern WA compared to my last home near Schenectady NY. That home valued at $275k had yearly taxes of about $11k This home on WA valued at about $720k is only about $6k. And people here bitch incessantly about how expensive the taxes are. If they only knew.

pocketdrummer 2026-01-25 04:23

To some extent I can understand having additional fees for an EV. You're not paying gas taxes. HOWEVER, I don't see how that should come out to $750. That's ridiculous.

Own_Reaction9442 2026-01-25 04:25

That feels pretty high to me. I'm in Olympia, WA and I'm paying $4486/year. House is worth about $450K.

Own_Reaction9442 2026-01-25 04:27

It's also dumb to call it a "millionaire tax," since it's not on wealth, it's on income. It would hit people with at least $1,000,000/year in wages.

Own_Reaction9442 2026-01-25 04:28

You sadly may be right. I saw a van the other day with tabs that expired in 2012.

Own_Reaction9442 2026-01-25 04:31

The fee is based largely on vehicle value, and they have a brand new Tesla.

GHAFHA 2026-01-25 04:33

steven-aziz 2026-01-25 04:33

LoneStarGut 2026-01-25 04:34

We don't pay it on cars like some states. What is your sales tax? Ours is 8.25%.

Super_Abalone_9391 2026-01-25 04:35

That seems extreme.

theotherharper 2026-01-25 04:35

Partly the very high book value of the car. Partly the fact that EVs don’t pay road tax so it's paid as part of reg.

Yeah, the weed tax in California is referred to as excise (excuse ) tax 😂

Curious-Job-7698 2026-01-25 05:07

That’s exactly why registration for EVs in California are more expensive. We don’t pay taxes at the pump, so they get us on registration. I guess it’s better than taking away the tax and converting all roads to toll roads.

abgtw 2026-01-25 05:10

Not if you live outside the RTA. Eastside here we pay under $300 for a '24 Model Y

KangarooSweaty2514 2026-01-25 05:58

~$750, Vegas. 23M3. It is what it is but my gripe is with insurance. Insurance is a scam, I got the customer service agent for progressive after an hour long battle on why my rates are rising when I have a clean driving record, no tickets, no accidents- she admitted it’s a Ponzi scheme. Needless to say, they didn’t raise my rates like they wanted to, in the interest of “fairness.” She said, “even if you don’t get into an accident, you are paying for someone else’s car in their accident, and even if you don’t use your insurance, you were covered for those days, “in case of…” I said, miss me with that BS, in case of what? because I can tell you after those 6 months, I didn’t need an “in-case of…” and I should get a full refund for my 6 months, because I never used an “in-case of…an event,” actual factual it didn’t happen and I don’t live my life on what ifs, and in-case of, I live on actual factual, and actual factual, I didn’t need and in-case of, and in-case of that, I should in-case of get my money back. Then renew this “in-case of” policy and if not used in those 6 months then I should get my money back. Insurance is a full scam. Since it’s a Ponzi scheme, insurance shouldn’t even turn a profit since we are paying for each other. Progressive market cap should be $0 and not in the billions because that’s our money. The entire direction of all insurances and how it’s viewed needs rigorous revamping because we are giving free money away monthly or annually, and it’s money these insurance companies never worked for and just to drive on a road, kick rocks. If you didn’t use your insurance in that time frame, you should 100% get your money back because “no-case event happened” and insurance companies don’t just get to keep your money. Laws needs to be rewritten.

time to just register in montana too, at least illinois is only $250, normal gas cars are $150.

ranger052 2026-01-25 06:06

Because the whole push for electric cars was for this very reason! To be able to change people whatever they wanted. Democrats pushed for this green initiative and democrats were they first to start overcharging for registration. And wait till they new law goes into effect, you know the one they also signed some years ago that basically allows them to shut down your car if you are “intoxicated or impaired”

tech_nerd05506 2026-01-25 06:16

bphase 2026-01-25 10:23

So you have to pay $1200 a year for taxes/tab whatever that is, and then another $1-2k for insurance? Is the tax that high everywhere? Here in Finland it's like 400-500 a year. Granted we pay much more tax in many other things.

iSosaStockz 2026-01-25 10:35

~800 in NC because of property tax and EV fee😐

WasabiZone13 2026-01-25 10:57

Outside-Lab877 2026-01-25 11:02

Wait; so are you broke, or not? If you’re affluent enough where a millionaires tax would be a burden to you why is the registration fee an issue at all?

Outside-Lab877 2026-01-25 11:06

Ikr? Finds the time to complain about the negatives of living in a progressive state but you’ll NEVER find them talking about all the benefits of it much less declining them on the basis of them being leftist/progressive policies and values.

Outside-Lab877 2026-01-25 11:13

Yeah why ask for professionals to figure out where chargers go, just place em wherever all willy-nilly like

Outside-Lab877 2026-01-25 11:17

So you’re an uninsured driver? Because if you think insurance won’t find any reason to deny coverage or a claim you’re crazy.

Outside-Lab877 2026-01-25 11:23

But you don’t have to live in Florida. That being said.. with how much power is in California I don’t know why everyone isn’t just driving a Corolla hybrid instead if they’re worried about costs and budgeting.

TurnoverSuperb9023 2026-01-25 12:39

I’m not gonna say that $1500 makes me feel ‘good’, but you guys get such crazy-good deals on Ev purchases and leases out there !!!

RuthlessIndecision 2026-01-25 13:19

$280 in ohio (for non-EVs it's like $40)

Puzzleheaded-Bee-747 2026-01-25 13:21

Typically gas taxes pay for part of the road maintenance. The registration fees are a way to recoup the road wear/tear/use costs. As more people get EVs the registration fees will go higher because less ICE vehicle will be sold. I hope no one ever thought EV's actually save you money. LOL

Major_Test_1537 2026-01-25 13:35

California $800

erclark99 2026-01-25 14:00

All I see if people complaining, but you are right on why EVs do cost more to register. Most states use the gas tax to fund road repair and building. So imagine you buy an EV, most of which are heavier than an equivalent gas car but don’t pay anything to maintain roads. (but don’t get me started on that because trucks and tractor trailers do the most damage to roads. Tractor trailers can sometimes get away with paying $0 in taxes in a state they drive all the time… so why are footing the bill??) You are so right about the tax though. While some states offer for you to get taxed based on mileage, it’s often better to pay the flat fee because you probably drive more than what the flat fee does. My regular tag renewal on my model 3 is likely significantly cheaper than the gas tax I’d pay. Of course gas tax is built into the price of gas so no one notices how much they’re actually paying in taxes on gas… I’m surprised at how much it is in your state for gas cars, is there no gas tax?

erclark99 2026-01-25 14:03

For a new car I’d assume? Someone else pointed out that they may overvalue cars (at least in WA) and to call and have them adjust the value so you pay less

erclark99 2026-01-25 14:05

I payed nearly $500 for a 3 year renewal… breaking that down it’s close to $150 per year. Coming from a 20 year old gas cars I was floored. Of course my Tesla was about 4 years old at that point so I’m sure that factors into it.

iggyfan66 2026-01-25 14:05

That’s insane

Credit-Limit 2026-01-25 14:07

Effective-Cress-3805 2026-01-25 14:16

Other repairs cost more though.

Pristine-Industry-52 2026-01-25 14:19

$495 for a 2025 Model 3 in Michigan.

Own-Conference2265 2026-01-25 14:19

Nope. That was my 2023 model 3 last year’s cost. Virginia is the most expensive state (or #2) to own a car in. So glad we just moved back to WA. Also, at least Seattle’s RTA goes to something good - mass transit. VA’s personal property tax (4.3% of the car’s value) just goes to the local government’s general fund - no idea where that $$$ actually goes. Edit: VA insanely overvalues the car. Worst part is it’s not possible to challenge the value as long as they use a commonly accepted valuation. You can request it lower due to high mileage or damage, I believe.

Imaginary_Tap_4242 2026-01-25 14:20

In my state you have the option to do 1,2 or 3 year renewals

ChrisSlicks 2026-01-25 14:23

His post is a bit misleading. Colorado has an EV registration fee of $60 to cover the lost fuel tax, the rest is the same for any vehicle. The remainder of the cost is an excise tax based on vehicle cost which depreciates each year. In other states like Massachusetts they bill this separately so the registration is $60 for 2 years but you get a separate excise bill a few months later. In the year of manufacture it is 90% of vehicle cost at $25 per thousand, 2nd year 60%, 3rd 40%, 4th 25%, 5+ 10%. The OP was complaining about the EV targeted add-on fee of $225 - but given that Washington State has one of the highest gas taxes in the country it's not out of line. $150 goes towards road use, that's equivalent to driving 7500 miles in a gas car at 30 mpg. The remaining $75 goes towards building charging infrastructure.

darw1n69 2026-01-25 14:39

And our insurance in NJ just went from $388 a month to $636. I immediately shopped around and every broker came back with that as the BEST price. One actually wanted $1200 a month! Can't wait to get out of this god forsaken state.

ZealousidealDraw4075 2026-01-25 14:40

Wait you pay more because its electric ? In The Netherlands it was 0,- until 2025,- then needed to pay 69,- every quarter and now 199,- every quarter Next year its 276,- so about 1100,- per year Insurance for all risk is 110,- per month, standart Insurance is 60,-

tech_nerd05506 2026-01-25 14:42

State gas tax has definitely gone up.

bphase 2026-01-25 14:43

Right, that makes more sense! That's about the same as we have here for EVs compared to gas, though gas is likely taxed much more here, as total price at pump is about $7.5 per gallon. So it seems like EVs are "underpaying" compared to gas and taxes will be going up probably. Or they'll find a way to tax electricity going into EVs even more, though that would be difficult.

Curious-Scallion-169 2026-01-25 14:45

Yes a $200 "road fee" is added annually in TN. Nearly double what I would pay if I had a Camry or Accord.

Leyvaman-MX 2026-01-25 14:48

We said bye-bye to Excise value based fees, when we left SoCal several years ago- for Albuquerque NM. Now just $60 for registration, and $30 for custom Road Runner plate😬 https://preview.redd.it/o8dkyx0ddifg1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a9146d92602c96ca1689b573f73b4da871c41599

Sad_Picture886 2026-01-25 14:59

It’s Washington come on, we all know we voted yes on 25 dollar car tabs, but Dems didn’t care and still did what they wanted, then our lovely governor inslee wanted to charge even more for EV because they weren’t making money with the gas tax or “Climate emissions” so they encouraged us to get EVs then charge us more because they aren’t making money on the gas. Go figure

SSBND 2026-01-25 15:22

Here is another fun fact - you buy a car in say Oregon, which has no sales tax, but then 9/11 happens and you have to move back to Idaho and register the car there you have to pay Idaho SALES TAX of several hundred dollars on a car you've already owned for 2 years. Oh and it was a lease so I had to turn it over like 18 months later. Total BS

WhlottaRosie65 2026-01-25 15:30

arsenalfcjun14 2026-01-25 15:46

Hello fellow NJer! Im using progressive, i pay $240 / mo for model 3 and honda odyssey (mini van for kids) combined Both are leases so full coverage

gorfnu 2026-01-25 15:53

Total scam

teckel 2026-01-25 15:54

Is there a yearly excise tax as well as a sales tax when you purchased the car? In my state, we pay sales tax at the time of purchase, then licensing each year is like $60/year (plus $200 for EV tax as a fuel tax replacement, which is another level of BS as I don't drive much so my fuel tax would be much lower).

gorfnu 2026-01-25 15:55

I pay $270 a month in michigan for insurance on my model 3 thats $3240 a year! Michigan has very high insurance prices

HatOk1620 2026-01-25 15:56

How much sales tax did you pay on the purchase of your vehicle is the real question

gorfnu 2026-01-25 15:57

I would be shocked if that money really went to roads.. something tells me its used to fund a scam or freeloader fund for criminals. You can never ever trust the government to spend tax dollars wisely

gorfnu 2026-01-25 15:58

I feel so much better now mine is only $270 in michigan

gorfnu 2026-01-25 16:01

In michigan they still extract your money. You have to pay the full amount for every year you skip plus late fees. Those scammers need their tax $

gorfnu 2026-01-25 16:02

Not surprised, that seems to be a repeating pattern.

magbarn 2026-01-25 16:14

Driven in CA? The roads are just as bad if not worse than Texas. Our road taxes are going everywhere else other than the road.

Seoul_T_Seattle 2026-01-25 16:14

Hey I’m in Washington state too it’s cause of the light rail My bmw wass that high too now wondering how much my 2023 Tesla will be do you know?

magbarn 2026-01-25 16:15

You're very lucky, they pull us over here in CA for expired tags all the time.

retlem 2026-01-25 16:16

I don’t doubt you at all. It’s all a money grab at the end of the day. And people are trapped in their car notes and have no other choice but to pay it. It’s ridiculous.

magbarn 2026-01-25 16:17

Do you have to pay for the full 2 years at a time? Geez, I thought CA was bad.

WA-typical 2026-01-25 16:18

My 2024 M3 LR I bought from Tesla used was $1200 last year and is $1100 this year to register it in AZ. A 2024 isn't exactly a "new" car. AZ is a ripoff on reg fees. Since it's based on "value", their depreciation rate is nowhere near the "actual" depreciation. It's some random fixed rate! It's no wonder I see so many expired registrations on newer cars than older ones! I lived in Seattle 3 years ago and registration wasn't nearly that high. But in Tucson at least, I've never seen so many cars in general with expired tags, sometimes by 2 years or more in any other city/state I've lived in.

Fantastic_Reveal_599 2026-01-25 16:21

This is a Tesla group..

darw1n69 2026-01-25 16:23

I also use Progressive. 2025 Model X had a year yesterday and 2024 Model 3P. 2 years ago with my last Model 3 and a Model Y we were at $280 a month. Progressive is what every search came back with for best rates this past week when I was searching.

🎶”It’s not easy being green.”🎶

Nreekay 2026-01-25 16:28

They changed it too recently. My first 3 my registration was $125 for 5 years (Dec of 2020) but then I traded in my standard for a LR (Mar 22) and it was the new system and I wasn’t allowed to transfer my plate.

_delamo 2026-01-25 16:30

Wtf

AmericanBeef24 2026-01-25 16:31

They’re gonna get the money out of you one way or another when there is no personal income tax. I just hate paying $250 for mine in GA when I also have 5% personal state income tax and sales tax.

External_Ad_839 2026-01-25 16:33

Looks like Minnesota too

jvandenburgh27 2026-01-25 16:35

1 year would've been $886.65 5 years would've been $3,253.62 1, 2 and 5 are your options. I also have a specialty/personalized plate that adds $50 a year.

redwon9plus 2026-01-25 16:37

Had to zoom in to make sure that wasn't a gas station 💡

Outside-Lab877 2026-01-25 16:39

Yes? And they’re a vehicle choice, not a lifestyle.. If budgeting a vehicle, insurance and all the associated fees is the problem, then ideally you’d pick something cheaper, is what I am getting at.

redwon9plus 2026-01-25 16:39

Where do they get you instead in FL?

Hazel-Max 2026-01-25 16:40

Get a PO Box outside of King and Pierce County. Mine went from $750 to $325 I registered my car at my brothers house in Lewis County. Much cheaper. You can thank our stupid light rail project and ev tax for this.

jvandenburgh27 2026-01-25 16:41

Nah, just the self wash. 🫧🧼😎

kgyre 2026-01-25 16:43

It's a property tax, and it seems like the kind of thing to take care of at the same time, as far as processing paperwork annually goes.

[deleted] 2026-01-25 16:44

I had the same amount for my 2024 Model 3 Highland. Live on the Eastside. I guess that most of the charge is for the RTA tax (lightrail). I offset this cost by using the free public chargers in Downtown Kirkland right down the street from where I live. Haven’t paid 1 penny of electricity to charge my Model 3 since I bought it!

Fantastic_Reveal_599 2026-01-25 16:46

Dude chill.. I was just shocked how expensive is here in CA and how low is in Florida. Why are you so triggered?

icy1007 2026-01-25 16:47

My state doesn’t charge any extra taxes on vehicles. They have a single registration fee plus the fuel type fee. It doesn’t matter if you drive a Nissan Leaf or a Rolls Royce Spectre, you’ll pay the same registration cost. Around ~$250/year.

kiiMxD 2026-01-25 16:52

And here was I complaining about 250 in GA

Outside-Lab877 2026-01-25 16:56

Either you’re a bot or you’re projecting lol

Fantastic_Reveal_599 2026-01-25 16:57

What? 😂 sure ok lol

therealCatnuts 2026-01-25 17:09

Yep. We get boned on vehicle taxes but our property taxes are lower than most states. Income tax uses to be much higher than average, now getting lower than average.

Howry 2026-01-25 17:14

Oregon just tried to cram this kind of stuff through including paying for how much mileage you drive per year as part of their transit tax. So many people were up in arms over the whole thing that it got enough signatures to be put up for vote in October. Now they are trying to cram it through on the May voting rather then October. I'm not going to get totally politcal here but are there any republican states that have extra EV taxes or do they seem to be primarily Dem states? I am just curious if this is common throughout the USA or more of a west coast thing? Democrat states push the EV thing then raise all the fees on them it appears. On the bright side I did get a $5000 credit from the state for purchasing an EV so I cant complain to much.

wrathslayer 2026-01-25 17:17

Just paid close to that for my 2023 Model 3 (RWD) in Phoenix AZ. 😬

switch01785 2026-01-25 17:18

453 for a model 3 2021 in california in 2026

GHAFHA 2026-01-25 17:27

It’s not really that mis leading, I did acknowledge that it goes down over time. I am still paying the 1000+ dollars I have to pay to register my car and drive it for 8-9000 miles a year.

GHAFHA 2026-01-25 17:30

For me yes I paid 1200 this year to register my car. Insurance is also insane, I pay almost 2500 a year for coverage. 🙂 Although yes I’m not paying 1200 because I have an EV, that’s just the cost of registration for cars in Colorado.

SlendyTheMan 2026-01-25 17:34

Remove a gas tax and charge tax on mileage difference on registration renewal.

Last-Medicine-1481 2026-01-25 17:39

Turnpike tolls, i95 express lane tolls ( prices vary by traffic congestion). Local interstate express lane tolls.

ChrisSlicks 2026-01-25 17:39

It's only misleading because you said it on a post about EV fees and the price you're paying is for having a new car, not an EV.

Repulsive-Title9037 2026-01-25 17:40

$640 for my 26 MYLR in CA

eddiehhs 2026-01-25 17:41

I can't believe it I bought a Mercedes Benz G63 2025 $210,000.00 registration is $138.00 but for my 2023 Tesla Model Y it's $430.00. This state is insane.

jrshall 2026-01-25 17:42

Is this the initial registration in WA? I thought the excise tax was a one time thing when you first registered it, sort of like a sales tax. Or is this some annual tax charged by Seattle? I am in Vancouver WA, and don't recall any annual excise tax.

AnyDimension8299 2026-01-25 17:51

You should run for governor. I agree a use based tax would be good, would just need to figure out how to execute it.

GHAFHA 2026-01-25 17:55

It’s not really a post about EV fees, more so about just fees, OP said he’s paying 750 a year. Only 225 is the cost of the EV. He is still upset by the remaking 500 bucks

bvogel7475 2026-01-25 18:13

Gas taxes pay for our road maintenance. Electric Cars do not pay that tax via gasoline. So, they are charging it in our registration. Seems fair to me.

jeffe101 2026-01-25 18:16

I still have yet to see this “charging infrastructure”.

LBGW_experiment 2026-01-25 22:24

I paid $872 in 2021 for a new 2021 model 3 in Seattle. Gas taxes are included in EV registration for lost revenue due to not consuming gas. Necessary for maintaining roads and whatnot (and I know, Seattle roads and paint are atrocious) This was something I searched and learned about prior to buying. I'm surprised you're surprised

Moridin2002 2026-01-25 22:29

In all states?

anderaj57 2026-01-25 22:36

Yes because it's weight based and they are considered commercial vehicles because of how heavy they are. So a few very wealthy people found a new way to get around the tax on accident.

remnant_x 2026-01-25 22:39

Yep. We don’t have an income tax, so we get other taxes. The transit tax is how we keep traffic flowing somewhat. I’m happy to pay them.

Im_Aloha 2026-01-25 22:49

Unlikely-Peach3877 2026-01-25 22:49

TeamImpulseX 2026-01-25 23:47

Well its to offset taxes to maintain roads they collect from gasoline which you’re not using, but you’re still using the same roads. I imagine you’d be paying way more towards the tax in a gas vehicle depending on how much you drive of course.

Ok-Sprinkles-5151 2026-01-25 23:51

I was going to say, that is cheap compared to Colorado

CurdaBean 2026-01-26 00:06

I was tired of the fee so I just stopped paying for a few years

jetsonian 2026-01-26 03:18

Keep in mind, you’re paying EV Registration because you’re not paying gas taxes. On the other hand I’m not sure what’s going on with the excise tax. Usually those are used to encourage/discourage consumer behavior (think cigarette or alcohol taxes). I can’t think of why a blue state like WA would tax EVs like that.

JAWilkerson3rd 2026-01-26 03:22

-SUBW00FER- 2026-01-26 03:38

What’s wrong with living in Florida? Power is pretty cheap. No income tax, pretty cheap gas. Mild climate and don’t have to worry about huge snow storms. Property is also relatively cheap since they are building housing everywhere. Hurricanes can be an issue but any modern home is generally resistant to hurricanes here. 20 years of living here and no hurricane has caused any damage besides trees/branches in places. California is amongst one of the last states I’d want to live in with how expensive it is and how much property/rent costs.

ndwolfwood09 2026-01-26 09:53

I could have told you this 8 years ago when I got the first gen M3... $700 in registration renewal & $1600 insurance annually... Paid off about 2 years ago. Now I pay about $300+ something a year for renewal, but my insurance is still about $1200... But at least I get free charging... If someone could have told me that Elon's $35k EV was a myth... I would have saved thousands and been done with a hybrid!😆

DroopyLegTony 2026-01-26 11:20

This is deliberate targeting bullshit. If ICE cars don’t get hit like this, EV’s shouldn’t either.

AdSquare3489 2026-01-26 11:39

TemporaryAstronaut2 2026-01-26 15:10

My first year was only like $850 in Colorado. Last year… $1500 seems wrong.

TemporaryAstronaut2 2026-01-26 15:12

You don’t have any excise tax? Some states have a fixed registration cost and then charge excise tax. Other states just lump it all into yearly or bi-annual registration fees.

Passive_incomes_lazy 2026-01-26 15:34

Gd, I paid 450 in Michigan and I thought that was a lot

icy1007 2026-01-26 16:09

No, we don't have excise taxes on car registration in Ohio. There is a local tax depending on county, but it is tiny. A few dollars where I live: [https://www.bmv.ohio.gov/doc-fees.aspx](https://www.bmv.ohio.gov/doc-fees.aspx)

TemporaryAstronaut2 2026-01-26 16:13

Well maybe it balances out over time. Some states charge taxes based on age of the vehicle. So if you’re paying $250 in perpetuity, but someone is owning theirs long enough to get down to $10/year, seems like your state made a bet on length of ownership.

Ginger_ninja_alex65 2026-01-26 16:20

I just paid 500 in Utah. My family in TN pays 200

icy1007 2026-01-26 16:26

It is a flat $200 for registering an Electric car and then a flat $36 for passenger car renewal. There are other fees depending on if you need a new plate or if you have a specialized plate, but there are no variable fees based on the car you're registering. I registered my Tesla for 5 years so I paid $1000 in EV fees plus a filing fee plus 5x the annual cost for a passenger vehicle. Came out to \~$1300 and I don't need to register again until the end of 2030.

FoundationSmart4574 2026-01-26 16:29

Aha! I bought a 2-year old depreciated EQS for $48k. RTA doesn't care. This year my renewal is at least $1500. I don't live in an area that benefits from the transit system at all but is somehow in the RTA region. But hey, it is what it is eh?

CSS_Sr 2026-01-26 22:44

Just doing a quick search, WA has approx 55¢ per gallon gas tax. If they assume people drive approximately 15,000 miles per year and say a 30MPG vehicle, they pay $275 per year in taxes. That seems pretty comparable to your EV tax of $255. It is unfortunate that states won't use the actual miles we drive to calculate our road tax.

Advanced-Emotion-643 2026-01-27 01:23

As a Florida resident originally from NY I couldn't agree more. Not to mention my home owners insurance just went down and progressive auto insurance just sent me a refund check because they made too much money by law in Florida last year. I really don't understand why the rest of my family continues to live in NY but I have no problem catching a cheap flight to visit them a couple times a year. Then return to the free state of Florida.

BaconIsTheNewBacon 2026-01-27 15:25

Not an EV but my most recent car was $2400 for the year not including vehicle purchase taxes. The car before that was $3200 for the first year thanks to the use tax in Colorado. It does go down each year. Fingers crossed I spend less than $5k on vehicles registration next year. 🤞

IntelligentTank5521 2026-01-27 16:06

They should place one for every 500 EVs in the equity disenfranchised neighborhood, rounded up. So zero.

bex_bill 2026-01-27 16:43

We don't pay the gas tax, so they have to get their money this way. That excise tax is ridiculous. I would move away from Seattle. Too many Democrats imbezzling money from your taxes.

Truth_Artillery 2026-01-27 17:10

LMAO

Logical-Tap-3141 2026-01-27 18:56

You’re correct. All vehicles in many states have an excise tax annually. This includes increases in Tennessee, Nebraska, Wisconsin and North Carolina. There are many other state examples of excise taxes to fill the gap not paid at the pump. It’s the cost of doing business. Sorry for those that think it’s unfair, but it’s not.

WA bureaucrats are so corrupt. This state will do whatever to squeeze everything out of Washingtonians. I don’t understand why people with electric cars who are trying save the environment by not supporting ice cars are getting reamed cause we’re not buying gas. And how about them toll charges! It’s higher during rush hours. Who the fuk is willing to pay $15-18 to get home from Bellevue to I-5? Fukin ridiculous

Tax on gas should be removed and all cars taxed in the same way. This is like vehicular apartheid. What about an EV driver that does 2000 miles a year vs an EV traveling salesman, their road usage tax is the same but usage is different. At least gas is tied to mileage.

I'm in NJ with 2 vehicles on my policy. When I added a third, the 2025 Model 3, the monthly went up $131 with NJM Insurance.

You live in the land of liberals. It’s not too shocking.

bradr8 2026-01-28 23:59

$700 here in Los Angeles, CA

Pottetan 2026-01-29 00:50

Do you have to pay tax per renewal? Plus when you bought it?

anticlimber 2026-01-29 02:25

That &%#&# excise tax is the Regional Transit Authority tax. I don't even have a bus station within miles of my house, but a bunch of lawyered-up jackasses who live right close to the new metro stations in Redmond managed to get a cutout, and not pay. For extra fun, mine is calculated on a retail price 20k higher than I actually paid (back when the MX was bouncing around prices).

Rough-Comfortable860 2026-01-29 10:03

Yep.. blue state blues.

nappycappy 2026-01-29 16:10

wtf is a tab renewal fee? is this the same as a CA's car registration that we have to renew every year? if so, my first model y's yearly renewal is \~750. I just bought a used model y so I'm hoping it's not 1400/yr for both cars.

Typical-Ad-8821 2026-01-29 17:19

I always feel bad for people in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties in Washington State that have to "fund" Sound Transit... I live in Olympia and have 3 vehicles and pay less than your one car.

dadbuilder 2026-01-29 22:42

Not just unincorporated King. I'm east King County in city limits and I do not pay the RTA tax. Here's the map. https://preview.redd.it/uy90x37l9dgg1.png?width=1020&format=png&auto=webp&s=91a58d6b651103792d92d77d07e8071413b1460b

$700 in CA. Model 3.

Big_Ed_OH 2026-01-31 12:57

Ohio charges an extra $200 for full EV and $100 for a hybrid per year. So with two hybrids and a MY - I pay an extra $400 to the state.
