You don't need to worry, they aren't removing it from existing cars - just net new cars. They cannot legally remove things you paid for. Autopilot is simply rebranded to traffic aware cruise control with auto steer on existing cars.

EricEvans123 2026-01-23 19:39

You sure about that? What if you sell your car? Does it lose the autopilot when a new person buys it?

chewychubacca 2026-01-23 19:39

they removed the ability for my car to use radar... (2018 model3)

Generic_Username28 2026-01-23 19:44

Do you own autopilot or just have a license? In the modern corporate hellscape, I'm guessing the EULA for autopilot is 300 pages and allows them to remove it for any reason they want.

I believe its just new cars, there was a screenshot of them selling a used car that still had it. There was a bit of confusion with the name Autopilot so they had to rename it TACC is the basic cruise control and Auto steer is the lane centering so I believe they're just combining the term TACC with Auto Steer rather Autopilot. Initially they had TACC / Autopilot / FSD... yeah in other markets there was EAP enhanced autopilot. Currently they still sell used vehicles on their site with Autopilot (now TACC w/ Autosteer), can that change in the future and them stripping it like they did with FSD? Yeah they can. But new new cars I believe they're removing it so they can sell it as a subscription. Old: TACC / Autopilot / FSD New: TACC / FSD Existing they'll probably just rename it from Autopilot to TACC w/ Autosteer.

They are not taking it off existing cars, they are just not offering it on new cars anymore.

teku45 2026-01-23 19:51

No, it looks like their used inventory is also keeping it. It looks like they are rebranding auto pilot as TACC + auto steer for those cars in the inventory. TBH might just be so they can avoid legal issues around the word auto pilot.

Watcherxp 2026-01-23 19:54

...wut? Where do people get this thought that they are gonna remove it from existing vehicles?

SelectCattle 2026-01-23 19:54

Just the fact that this is a conversation is such a grim indicator.  Good thing we have tariffs to keep those Chinese EVs out of the market.s/

ChewWork 2026-01-23 19:58

They didn't remove it per say....the software just doesn't use it anymore

It was part of the original contract of buying a car. NAL, but if you remove that from the purchase, afterwards, it violates the contract and you'd likely be entitled to a full refund and return the car. If it was removed from my car, I would seek legal council and I would certainly seek a full refund for my purchase as AP is a massive reason as to why I bought the car.

They aren’t removing Autopilot from existing cars. They are ceasing selling it with new cars.

Flakarter 2026-01-23 20:09

While I doubt it will be removed from existing vehicles, they can make it operate poorly, or create some type of conflict, or say it needs to be removed for safety reasons.

David722 2026-01-23 20:09

They’re not. Blame the clickbait headlines.

KrevinHLocke 2026-01-23 20:10

California was on Tesla because they thought the name was misleading. [https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/california-ultimatum-tesla-must-rename-autopilot-in-90-days-or-go/ar-AA1TuUNa](https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/california-ultimatum-tesla-must-rename-autopilot-in-90-days-or-go/ar-AA1TuUNa) If it was me, I would have named it "Totally not autopilot /wink /wink" But, I suppose traffic aware cruise control was more fitting for the lawyer language.

Watcherxp 2026-01-23 20:24

Yup

Generic_Username28 2026-01-23 20:49

"We've updated base autopilot so that it doesn't steer and only maintains speed. If you want lane assistance you'll need to upgrade to our Premium Autopilot."

Desperate-Review-727 2026-01-24 01:11

No they would be liable for lawsuits, hence why they didn't do that.

Desperate-Review-727 2026-01-24 01:12

In 2026 people are still falling for clickbait headlines? And even worse.. those people are also allowed to drive?? How dangerous

cherrytoffee 2026-01-24 02:33

People are dumb. That is all

BuddyTheShihTzu 2026-01-25 20:49

That would have to be a recall then

Ghost__of__kyiv 2026-01-28 16:34

Whats next they gonna remove steering wheel for subscription?

d3fault 2026-02-03 05:43

Yes. Yes they are. Own 2 MY auto steer capabilities were removed on both cars. Downgrade to basic cruise control

SomeFuckingMillenial 2026-02-03 09:10

Can you prove that? I would be absolutely shocked.
