Fsd price is the same for hw3 and hw4

Imaginary_Tap_4242 | 2026-01-23 18:47 | 68 views

Shouldn't it be less since its not as powerful, Like paying the same price for iPhone 15 vs iPhone 16

Yeah I’m wondering what they’re gunna do here because the subscription price is going to increase too. 99 is already too expensive for HW3 features, or lack there of.

TrubbishBish 2026-01-23 18:59

The subscription should cost less for HW3 since you get less features, but Tesla knows that a majority of FSD users will still pay $99 on HW3, so they won’t reduce it.

turns2stone 2026-01-23 19:09

Like paying the same price for iPhone 15 vs iPhone 16 ^^^ no it’s like paying the same price for Adobe if you’re using it on a $300 laptop or $3000 workstation

Sad_Salad_3749 2026-01-23 19:19

Not really as it’s same technically the same software versio

Sad_Salad_3749 2026-01-23 19:19

I can’t imagine there are many hw3 FSD subscribers l, if the entire fleet is around 12% hw3 has to be barely a fraction of that

TrubbishBish 2026-01-23 19:27

A majority of Teslas on the road are HW3

Sad_Salad_3749 2026-01-23 19:28

Yes which is related to why nobody buys fsd

TrubbishBish 2026-01-23 19:31

I feel like most FSD users have HW3, but only Tesla has that data.

drivingaddictionchan 2026-01-23 19:37

Hw3 operates on a separate fsd version

President_Connor_Roy 2026-01-23 19:57

Maybe if it’s a different, earlier, worse version of Adobe too.

DominusFL 2026-01-23 20:14

I have a feeling that when they get to unsupervised, then it will be one price for supervised and a higher price for unsupervised.

YouKidsGetOffMyYard 2026-01-23 20:22

I agree, It really should be less unless they can make it have the same features as FSD with HW4 (it doesn't currently)

WorldOfTTS 2026-01-23 20:49

Tesla mentioned FSD Lite will be coming in Q1 of this year for HW3 so we could be seeing a cheaper version coming out soon for us common folk

kjmass1 2026-01-23 21:35

TeslaFi has HW3:HW4 almost 3:1.

mikeonh 2026-01-23 22:27

They're looking at software development and support costs, not how well it works for you. When you buy a PC game, does the price change depending on how good the hardware is? Yes, fairness might say you should pay less, but that will never happen.

TrubbishBish 2026-01-23 22:57

Right. We could assume that the same 3:1 ratio applies to FSD users, but there’s no way to know if that’s accurate unless Tesla shares the data. Back when FSD was a totally separate software version from the regular software, it was easy to differentiate who was using FSD and who wasn’t on TeslaFi. Even then, not totally accurate as data on TeslaFi is likely biased.

Sad_Salad_3749 2026-01-23 23:09

Whether this is true or not $99 is not worth it to most on hw3, still see by the low %

Salty_Leather42 2026-01-23 23:53

Agreed except it’s like an iPhone 8 vs 17 with 18 being around the corner and 19 announced .

JuiceAdditional23 2026-01-24 00:14

Tried a month of “FSD” on HW3 M3. Total waste of money. I might pay 10-15 bucks a month in its current state. Way over priced. (And that’s in Australian pesos)

Southernboyj 2026-01-24 00:22

Your argument falls apart since HW3 has received zero updates in the last year while HW4 has received like 15.

THATS_LEGIT_BRO 2026-01-24 00:26

Should a gallon of gas cost more for a Ferrari vs Corolla? You get more performance from the same thing.

mikeonh 2026-01-24 00:42

Well, it's my experience from working with a lot of software companies. Unless the HW3 codebase is completely frozen for all time, they still have to put in effort. Lots of that effort is independent of the target hardware - we frequently built from a single source code base, selecting multiple output targets to generate. That selection was visible during the actual build, so some features might be conditionally included for each target. It was still maintained as a unified codebase with extensive testing of each output variant, and new features and bug reports being considered for the whole product. And I don't think there's going to be any price reduction; I believe today's news mentioned that there might be future price increases. And I'm sure they're going to have to respond to critical bugs in the behavior on HW3 cars.

penapox 2026-01-24 00:52

It's not the same thing because HW4 has been way ahead in terms of software for more than a year now It's more like making everyone pay for premium gas even if their car doesn't need it

TrubbishBish 2026-01-24 00:57

I agree. The data clearly shows that $99 per month is not worth it to most Tesla owners regardless of HW3 or HW4. I’m curious how usage would change if Tesla added a $5 per day option. Personally, I wish I could just subscribe to EAP for like $10/mo.

brianWM 2026-01-24 01:03

Now $49 on HW3. I assume it’s if you’ve previously purchased EAP.

Narbaitz 2026-01-24 03:22

Agreed

lnxgod 2026-01-24 04:27

I agree

Leather-Cod2129 2026-01-24 06:36

Less features? Like?

WrongdoerIll5187 2026-01-24 06:44

Absolutely that’s wild. It should be like 50 tops because it’s just sketchy sometimes

Due-Sheepherder5408 2026-01-24 07:56

Yeah its wayy overpriced

Due-Sheepherder5408 2026-01-24 07:59

Very sketchy it does well in light to medium traffic

AnnOnnamis 2026-01-24 08:44

[Kim Java put out a YouTube video](https://youtu.be/srlsDMDjdBI?si=ls7X3SpqKekxOEkm) discussing Tesla’s new patent to break up complex modeling & instructions into smaller blocks so that older HW3 can process the same FSD software as HW4. I’m not sure what the real world performance will be, but it’s interesting. I guess we’ll wait and see.

Scary-Animator-5646 2026-01-24 19:40

This is probably what’s going to happen. Tiered FSD seems to be the way to go.

TrubbishBish 2026-01-24 20:12

Every FSD feature and improvement that has been added over the last year is not applicable to HW3. Some I can think of right away are the ability to start FSD in park, ability for FSD to reverse, ability to choose how to park when you get to your destination… If you look on the TeslaFi or Not a Tesla App websites, everything added after FSD v12.6.4. I understand that there is a difference between improvements and features. You can’t expect to receive improvements forever or for your hardware to perform as good as newer hardware, but the features part is the focus. If you’re paying for a feature set, you should get all of the same features as someone else who is paying the same price for the same feature set, in my opinion. Currently, that is not the case.

LoneStarGut 2026-01-25 05:45

I just bought a 2023 Model Y with HW4 that had EAP. As soon as I transferred it to me in the app, it offered me FSD for $49/month or $2000 lifetime. I bought the lifetime - again on HW4. The discount is due to EAP previously being purchased.

Civil-Asparagus-1732 2026-01-25 18:42

Was thinking they would do a discount for HW3. If it couldn't keep up with hw4

Iurii_S 2026-01-26 06:41

I think when other competitors will join they will have to lover the price to $50 a month. Rivian is launching FSD in 2026 for 49.99 a month.
