My last car was a prius which had a godlike trunk. So I can’t compare to a sedan, but I have had the feeling like something is off about the tesla trunk.

I had a rental Toyota and the trunk felt bigger even though the car was way smaller lol

Sounds like you’d be happier in a Y.

I was just curious if it's just me, I really like my M3 and I prefer it to Y even though sometimes it's too low and also the trunk

Well, it is what it is, and not great for large items. It's a sedan after all.
But it is big. I rented a Nissan Rogue when travelling with quite alot of stuff and it all fit easier in my Model 3 than in the Rogue.

The whole car is poorly designed. It looks good on paper but having to live with it every day I have found many things like that.

You’re comparing a hatchback to a sedan… The model 3 has a good sized trunk for a SEDAN but it’s still a sedan.
That’s why crossover SUV’s or any other hatchbacks are so popular, because you get a much larger trunk, look at the Model Y.
Also I always find it suspicious people are always pushing Toyotas in these complaint threads about Teslas. Toyota PR department is known to stalk social media and make posts but no we don’t want your ICE vehicles.

I guess it’s all relative I came from a CMax Energi that had horrendous trunk space due to the HV battery so the Model 3 feels like best trunk I’ve had in a sedan.

Model 3 trunk has swallowed everything I’ve thrown at it. Even a full sized new toilet! Wife and I are constantly impressed at how much you can fit in it.

I have a 3 and Y. I agree with your assessment. On paper, trunk is huge. But the opening to access that size is pretty narrow. The S solves this with the hatchback design.

I feel like they could have made it bigger by extending rearward a bit more.

My 3 trunk gets water in it when it rains some how and then when I open it it spills out into my trunk

That's modern sedan design. The mail slot trunk is good for aerodynamics, but terrible for space. You have to buy hatchbacks.

I've found the trunk to be perfectly designed, but I've got a '22. The top of the trunk is smooth so you don't catch any wires or the subwoofer. I've slept in my Model 3's trunk FFS. WITH two of my kids! I'm totally happy with the storage, I'm always carrying a jack, patch kit, shovel/emergency kit, tire pump, spare wood to lift a flat, and my mobile charger and there's STILL room in the sub-trunk! I did buy a collapsable ladder because my fold up ladder wouldn't fit in the trunk without the seats folded down, so there is that one issue. ╮(╯▽╰)╭

Some people with this problem had their trunk seals realigned or replaced. You shouldn’t be getting water in. I have a 2018 and never had a water issue.

This is the biggest flaw of the Model 3, IMO. They could have (and should have) easily made it a liftback/hatchback.

2025 m3 here and Feels like more space than my Passat had, and the back seats go down much better (as in more level/horizontal with the trunk floor) than any car I’ve had

I agree. It should have been designed as a fastback to take care of this.

Stampy_bird
2026-01-23 19:41
I think the opposite. The design is good on the M3
The only thing I don’t like is the sedan design. I like how small the car is but the sedan style is the only drawback for me. If an S in my price range had a horizontal screen, I would have gone with the S for the sole reason of the hatchback on a car as low and similar style to the 3

No it has tons of space for a sedan.

Ironically the trunk opening is awkward while the insanely tall deck height on the highland makes rear view visibility absolutely abysmal compared to any other sedan ive ever been in. I cant see a car's headlights unless they are 20 car lengths back, which makes it impossible to tell if someone behind me has their signal on and is going to try to get into the same lane im moving into for instance. It is the one thing I absolutely loath about my car every time I get into it. The actual trunk space is great imo, it's just the way they designed around it sucks.
They should have just made the 3 a hatch. The design could easily accommodate it without changing the lines and aesthetics of the car at all if they wanted. It already has the perfect proportions for a sportback design.

I mean, it’s a sedan. It’s got way more trunk space than other sedans. Surprising no one, it doesn’t have as much space as my wife’s SUV.

I agree, I own a 22 model 3, a civic and an accord. All 4 door. My Hondas can fit 2 full size suitcases and 2 carry ons in the trunk. My model 3 can’t, 2 large suitcase has to go on the back seat. It can fit 1 large suitcase and 4 carry ons, but not fitting 2 full size suitcases is an oversight.

I dunno. Having space for a full keg of beer and then the rest of the trunk on top of it still seems pretty decent…

Yes, it's really poorly designed. All the snow falls into the trunk IF I can open it. This is when it is not frozen. Snow melts on the rear windshield and freeze back at the bottom where the trunk starts. I wish they adopted the hatch like the model S.
