Is it just me or is the trunk really poorly designed

ingram9999 | 2026-01-23 07:20 | 23 views

Not really a complaint, just something I’ve noticed. The Model 3 trunk has a lot of space on paper, but in real use it feels more limited than it should be. The floor area is decent, but the usable height is restricted by the stuff on the trunk ceiling, so taller items don’t fit even though there’s clearly space below. The sides also slope in quite a bit, which eats into the width as you load things deeper. On top of that, the trunk opening makes it awkward to fit bulkier items compared to other sedans. I get that it’s a design trade-off and it is a sedan, but it still feels less practical than expected. Curious if anyone else feels the same.

My last car was a prius which had a godlike trunk. So I can’t compare to a sedan, but I have had the feeling like something is off about the tesla trunk.

ingram9999 2026-01-23 13:10

I had a rental Toyota and the trunk felt bigger even though the car was way smaller lol

KilroyKSmith 2026-01-23 13:41

Sounds like you’d be happier in a Y.

ingram9999 2026-01-23 13:42

I was just curious if it's just me, I really like my M3 and I prefer it to Y even though sometimes it's too low and also the trunk

Lordoosi 2026-01-23 14:02

Well, it is what it is, and not great for large items. It's a sedan after all. But it is big. I rented a Nissan Rogue when travelling with quite alot of stuff and it all fit easier in my Model 3 than in the Rogue.

The whole car is poorly designed. It looks good on paper but having to live with it every day I have found many things like that.

Da_Spooky_Ghost 2026-01-23 14:21

You’re comparing a hatchback to a sedan… The model 3 has a good sized trunk for a SEDAN but it’s still a sedan. That’s why crossover SUV’s or any other hatchbacks are so popular, because you get a much larger trunk, look at the Model Y. Also I always find it suspicious people are always pushing Toyotas in these complaint threads about Teslas. Toyota PR department is known to stalk social media and make posts but no we don’t want your ICE vehicles.

scohen158 2026-01-23 14:22

I guess it’s all relative I came from a CMax Energi that had horrendous trunk space due to the HV battery so the Model 3 feels like best trunk I’ve had in a sedan.

eSUP80 2026-01-23 14:30

Model 3 trunk has swallowed everything I’ve thrown at it. Even a full sized new toilet! Wife and I are constantly impressed at how much you can fit in it. https://preview.redd.it/jh0k3wle04fg1.jpeg?width=3021&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f50b1149b6c25e677990cf1e071225d231703a62

I have a 3 and Y. I agree with your assessment. On paper, trunk is huge. But the opening to access that size is pretty narrow. The S solves this with the hatchback design.

McMagneto 2026-01-23 14:39

I feel like they could have made it bigger by extending rearward a bit more.

beerdrinknweedsmoken 2026-01-23 14:41

My 3 trunk gets water in it when it rains some how and then when I open it it spills out into my trunk

LectricOldman 2026-01-23 14:59

sedan

FencingNerd 2026-01-23 15:06

That's modern sedan design. The mail slot trunk is good for aerodynamics, but terrible for space. You have to buy hatchbacks.

iKnowRobbie 2026-01-23 15:35

I've found the trunk to be perfectly designed, but I've got a '22. The top of the trunk is smooth so you don't catch any wires or the subwoofer. I've slept in my Model 3's trunk FFS. WITH two of my kids! I'm totally happy with the storage, I'm always carrying a jack, patch kit, shovel/emergency kit, tire pump, spare wood to lift a flat, and my mobile charger and there's STILL room in the sub-trunk! I did buy a collapsable ladder because my fold up ladder wouldn't fit in the trunk without the seats folded down, so there is that one issue. ╮(╯▽╰)╭

iKnowRobbie 2026-01-23 15:35

It is just you.

iKnowRobbie 2026-01-23 15:36

Okay, that's funny and cool.

CaliDude75 2026-01-23 15:50

Not just you. I wish it was a liftback too. And no, a liftback Model 3 is NOT the same as a Model Y.

sm753 2026-01-23 15:55

I can fit a Lectric XP4 folding e-bike in the trunk, it's been plenty fine.

ingram9999 2026-01-23 16:03

haha

ingram9999 2026-01-23 16:04

that doesn't sound normal, I don't have such an issue on my highland

LeaString 2026-01-23 16:18

Some people with this problem had their trunk seals realigned or replaced. You shouldn’t be getting water in. I have a 2018 and never had a water issue.

Relative-Surround-29 2026-01-23 16:22

I miss the rear window wiper

Jdsmitty10 2026-01-23 17:03

I sometimes wish the opening was bigger but if I need to haul more than my 3 can handle I just take my Camry or my Highlander SUV.. wish the 3 was a hatch style like the model s…

nick_wise 2026-01-23 17:28

stuff on the trunk ceiling?

midnight_to_midnight 2026-01-23 17:28

This is the biggest flaw of the Model 3, IMO. They could have (and should have) easily made it a liftback/hatchback.

egoomega 2026-01-23 17:46

2025 m3 here and Feels like more space than my Passat had, and the back seats go down much better (as in more level/horizontal with the trunk floor) than any car I’ve had

Valuable_Ad_4916 2026-01-23 18:10

I agree. It should have been designed as a fastback to take care of this.

Ok_Description_ 2026-01-23 18:32

I wish I bought a Y for this exact reason, well that and being able to get in and out easier

Dkaf91 2026-01-23 18:58

Bro, this is a sedan...

Stampy_bird 2026-01-23 19:41

I think the opposite. The design is good on the M3 The only thing I don’t like is the sedan design. I like how small the car is but the sedan style is the only drawback for me. If an S in my price range had a horizontal screen, I would have gone with the S for the sole reason of the hatchback on a car as low and similar style to the 3

cherrytoffee 2026-01-24 02:40

No it has tons of space for a sedan.

tacobell_shitstain 2026-01-25 17:27

Ironically the trunk opening is awkward while the insanely tall deck height on the highland makes rear view visibility absolutely abysmal compared to any other sedan ive ever been in. I cant see a car's headlights unless they are 20 car lengths back, which makes it impossible to tell if someone behind me has their signal on and is going to try to get into the same lane im moving into for instance. It is the one thing I absolutely loath about my car every time I get into it. The actual trunk space is great imo, it's just the way they designed around it sucks. They should have just made the 3 a hatch. The design could easily accommodate it without changing the lines and aesthetics of the car at all if they wanted. It already has the perfect proportions for a sportback design.

R5Jockey 2026-01-25 21:05

I mean, it’s a sedan. It’s got way more trunk space than other sedans. Surprising no one, it doesn’t have as much space as my wife’s SUV.

auntiechrist74 2026-01-25 21:07

I agree, I own a 22 model 3, a civic and an accord. All 4 door. My Hondas can fit 2 full size suitcases and 2 carry ons in the trunk. My model 3 can’t, 2 large suitcase has to go on the back seat. It can fit 1 large suitcase and 4 carry ons, but not fitting 2 full size suitcases is an oversight.

ingram9999 2026-01-25 21:10

Exactly, I had to do the same

Vox289 2026-01-26 00:55

Yuksm4299 2026-01-26 06:44

I have tested and confirmed that it fits 2 full sized adult males. This was enough for me.

Conceitedreality 2026-01-27 03:14

Model S is ideal

Ready_Newspaper_8670 2026-01-27 18:32

I feel the opposite actually. I've fit more stuff in there than I would have expected.

clee666 2026-01-27 18:48

Yes, it's really poorly designed. All the snow falls into the trunk IF I can open it. This is when it is not frozen. Snow melts on the rear windshield and freeze back at the bottom where the trunk starts. I wish they adopted the hatch like the model S.

krenx88 2026-01-27 23:24

I fit my entire mattress, computer, luggage when moving from SF to Socal. There is plenty of space in the car.

Marickal 2026-01-30 12:39

I totally agree that social media PR is flooding Reddit, it’s almost too far gone now. I like my tesla.
