Do I pay $1000 more for FSD

Firm-Egg5813 | 2026-01-17 19:26 | 39 views

I am planning on buying a 2021 model 3. There is one with FSD that costs $1000 more. Initially I said no, I’m spending so much and I can’t just keep going up in price. Now I’m wondering if for $1000, I should be getting it. It may add a point of difference one day when I sell my car, but that day will be a long way away. I’m not sure how much I would actually use it, but maybe once I have it I would… I’m just not sure. I’ve never had a Tesla before, and it seems crazy.

Do it you won’t regret.

meental 2026-01-17 19:30

Id pay $1k more for FSD, it should get updates in the future and can maybe be transferred to a new car in the future.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 19:30

Thank you. I’m starting to think that. The concept of the car driving me seems crazy, even the autopilot option.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 19:31

Wow. Thank you. I hadn’t thought of being able to transfer it.

corner 2026-01-17 19:31

Absolutely worth it, for $1k it’s a no brainer

etsuprof 2026-01-17 19:31

For $1k yes. 10 months of subscription. But 2021s appear to have a rash of battery problems, so keep that in mind. Is this 2021 an Intel or AMD chip? I wouldn’t get one with the intel version. They switched at some point in 2021 I believe. I have an early 2022 at it has the AMD Ryzen chip.

meental 2026-01-17 19:33

It comes and goes but thats one reason I upgraded from my old 2018 with FSD to a new 26 model Y.

EntirePath 2026-01-17 19:33

I personally would even on a hw3. Some people here will argue that on a hw3 it's not worth it but even as a hw4 and fsd user, I do think 1k is worth a permanent fsd. Also hw3 with fsd paid for "should' be upgraded for free but no guarantee on that It does depend on other factors of the car too but if you're saying the only difference is fsd and it's 1k more, I would. Now whether the cars in question is worth buying is different cause you didn't say anything else about it.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 19:37

Thank you. I’ve been thinking that since I said no.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 19:39

It is the refresh model with the longer range. I’m not sure which chip. At first I was looking for one with the newer battery, but that cars range was about 350km, the refresh model is about 500km. I know it’s not real world range.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 19:42

Thank you. I’m not sure which chip. It’s the refresh model with the longer range, about 500km. I know it’s not real world. I was looking at one with an LFP battery, but the range was a lot less.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 19:43

Thank you. I’ve now emailed the garage and requested the one with FSD.

eSUP80 2026-01-17 19:46

No brainer yes

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 19:47

Thank you.

TonyH22_ATX 2026-01-17 19:50

I would 100% get the FSD if it was $1000. I’m on the subscription and use it every day

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 19:51

Thank you. Someone commented and then deleted the comment, saying it depends which chip. I googled and it’s likely to be the older Intel chip, but still good.

Cg006 2026-01-17 19:52

Even on older hardware FSD is awesome. It may be crappier at local streets but it is amazing on highways.

Lonely-Job484 2026-01-17 19:57

Yeah I would

Affectionate_Town273 2026-01-17 20:03

Yeah $1k isn't bad when purchase it cost $8k and you will no longer be able to actually outright purchase FSD soon. It would be HW3 though so not sure if that is a concern.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 20:06

I was just reading about that. It still seems reasonable value for the price.

liver-and-white 2026-01-17 20:14

I paid for it on my highland when I bought it and I use it daily. I’m so used to it now that I get confused for a moment when I’m driving something else.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 20:16

That worries me too, I don’t think I’d use it all the time.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 20:16

I’ve just googled and it’s most likely the intel chip.

JFreader 2026-01-17 20:25

No it cant.

Conceitedreality 2026-01-17 20:35

Yes it can?

beavermcmuffy 2026-01-17 20:40

If the cars are identical otherwise, same year miles condition etc definitely spend the 1k

meental 2026-01-17 20:55

Really? Why not? They've already stated that a v14 lite should be coming to HW3 soon and a HW upgrade will come at some point once they know what is needed for unsupervised. Obviously no one knows the timeline and its always 2 weeks away but a $1k gamble would be worth it to me, not to mention current HW3 FSD is still better than almost every other driving assist from any other manufacturer.

SleepingAndKissing 2026-01-17 21:01

yes it can. i bought a 2019 used with fsd lifetime and xferred it to 2025 new in september last yr.

SleepingAndKissing 2026-01-17 21:02

YES, im so lucky i was able to get a 2019 with fsd lifetime. xferred it last sept. just wait for a new promo, get lower interest possibly, and new spanking car!

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 21:03

Amazing!

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 21:05

Yea. They are pretty much identical. FSD is the only difference.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 21:05

Very nice!!!!

SleepingAndKissing 2026-01-17 21:10

oh and also, they may discontinue the lifetime package soon, so any chance to get the lifetime option from a used car is a STEAL. especially since tesla wipes it if they were to sell it used. just be patient, wait for promo, and hw3 is still amazing~ also if the car doesn’t have hw3, u can retrofit it to 3 for free at service centers. mine came with 2.5, so no fsd, just autosteer, waited bout a month for the appt, and its totally free to install😋

JustSomeUsername99 2026-01-17 21:26

If you plan to own it for at least 2 or 3 years when Elon gets around to actually upgrading the HW3 cars to hw4, then do it. If not, don't do it. It's just a gimmick on HW3, not good enough. Makes dumb lane changes, and hesitates like a 12 year old learning to drive.

teckel 2026-01-17 21:29

I'd say it's not worth it. It doesn't work at all for several months out of the year here (like right now). And even in the summer it's not worth it. I just pay $99 for a month when on a driving vacation (which doesn't happen often, as we typically fly to our vacation destinations). In 3 years, I've paid for one month of FSD (and I'd say it was more worth $20 than $99).

dagooch66 2026-01-17 21:53

You probably haven't heard that tesla is ending fsd purchases after Feb 14th or so. you won't be able to xfer it to a new car unless you do it within a month. I have a 2020 that I transferred to a new highland. its OK if they drop the sub price to 50 bucks, if they dont all of us fsd owners are screwed.

liver-and-white 2026-01-17 21:54

That’s what I said but it grew on me quickly. My daily commute is 35 miles each way and I start work at 430 am so it nice to have.

gentlehurricane 2026-01-17 22:24

FSD is available monthly for $100/month. If you think you’re going to use it often and keep the car longer than 10 months you’ll break quickly.

LeaString 2026-01-17 22:27

Thru 2/14 you can buy an upgrade to FSD for $2K. I’d do it for $1K. Especially if you plan to keep the car. You may very well find you like using it.

Muhahahahaz 2026-01-17 22:32

Yes, that’s a steal for FSD

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 22:36

Thank you, I think it is the older one.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 22:38

That’s ok. While it would be amazing if I could buy a new Tesla one day, this one is a big stretch for me and I will use it for a long time, as long as it’s still working. I’m replacing a 2010 Mazda 3, because the repair costs have become too much and are getting bigger.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 22:40

I plan on using it for years.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-17 22:41

Thank you. I’ve emailed the dealer to change cars, to the one with FSD.

No-Pilot5559 2026-01-17 22:44

Well considering it normally sells for $8K I would say an 87.5% discount on a great product that you will use every day for life is a pretty good deal. Not sure how you could pass this up

SleepingAndKissing 2026-01-17 22:51

oh?? ya won’t even be able to xfer either?? that’s a major bummer. kinda screws over HW3 owners that passed up on the recent xfer promo…

Bitter-Budget-7788 2026-01-17 23:56

Yes, no question at all. I would have paid an extra 1,000 for FSD now that I’ve used it.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-18 00:13

That’s ok. This car is a long term plan. Maybe another reason I should just get it now.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-18 00:15

True. An even bigger discount actually. I’m in NZ and FSD would cost $11400!

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-18 00:15

The more I think about it the more I think I will love it.

Joei626 2026-01-18 02:08

Just curious how is it 1k? I got EAP and it’s 2k

CompleteGene82 2026-01-18 02:38

You can't transfer from a used car that you buy now with fsd to a new car. If you buy a new car with it and paid full price for fsd, you might be able to transfer it when they have promotions... To buy another new car.  $1000 more for FSD is totally worth it!

Ok-Wrongdoer8061 2026-01-18 04:00

100% worth it

jaysonic0215 2026-01-18 04:06

DEF worth the extra $1k.

Oo_Juice_oO 2026-01-18 04:35

Yes! 100% do it! Pay for it and run, yelling "Start the car!" as you get away from the seller before he realizes what you just stole from him. [Ikea - Start the car!](https://youtu.be/NlWCLw75XnE?si=IIkfFEssMUsuLv63&t=14)

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-18 08:02

I love that. 🤣

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-18 08:04

I’m buying the car second hand and it already has FSD. I can choose another car, same spec, similar mileage…and $1000 less.

Rave-TZ 2026-01-18 13:11

If HW4, yes. If HW3, no.

Balgard 2026-01-18 15:41

Can confirm I have hw3. I use fsd every time I drive, it works amazing and I hardly intervene. I'm hoping for a new version but at the same time what I have now isn't broken, so I'll let the people with the new version keep beta testing for me 😜

Mediocre_Paramedic22 2026-01-19 00:20

I would definitely spend the extra 1k for it.

magictiger 2026-01-19 06:04

With them switching to a subscription-only model for FSD, we may not see that promotion come around as often if ever again.

CompleteGene82 2026-01-19 06:23

With subscription you would be paying $1000 in a yr. So get the FSD upgrade now!

Drbpro07 2026-01-19 14:59

Yes yes yes. For $1k more I would definitely take fsd one if Both cars are similar value

JFreader 2026-01-19 15:09

I have hw3 and fsd and it is great. I was just responding that you can't transfer FSD to a new car after Feb 14.

Firm-Egg5813 2026-01-19 16:40

I’m not sure, I googled it, it looks like HW3, but some people still think it’s good.

meental 2026-01-19 17:25

Tesla just announced that fsd transfer is still good til March 31st

Electronic_Search99 2026-01-20 08:13

No brainer

Defiant-Opposite-501 2026-01-20 12:55

I'd pay $1k more for it. To add it to my used Tesla would be the full 8k, and if someone hits me or totals the car I'm out the 8k.

One_Personality_3788 2026-01-24 16:59

Buy it 1K is super cheap, if you dont like it you can turn it off and not use it, but better then regretting it and having to pay 8K or a sub for 100
