Chief Executive Elon Musk said the electric-vehicle maker would stop selling a suite of advanced driver assistance features for a one-time payment, switching instead to a monthly subscription service. The company’s Full Self-Driving system makes it easier for drivers to change lanes and navigate around other vehicles and objects, but doesn’t make vehicles fully autonomous and is meant to be used only with a fully attentive driver. Tesla currently offers the FSD system for a one-time payment of $8,000 or a subscription of $99 a month in the U.S., according to Tesla’s website. Musk wrote in a post on X that Tesla would stop selling the system after Feb. 14, making it only available through a monthly subscription. He didn’t elaborate on the decision to remove the one-time payment option. Tesla shares slipped 0.6% premarket. Source: https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2011324998653513810

“Makes it easier to change lanes and navigate around other vehicles”😭😭😭 classic wsj bending the truth

Lordofpineapples 2026-01-14 14:44

Yet another reason to never buy newer cars. Subscriptions to use features on a car you own is insane. The world is tuning into “you’ll own nothing and be happy”

lowerlevel18 2026-01-14 14:57

Elons compensation money has to come from somewhere.

CruzAndChill 2026-01-14 15:12

Drop it to $49.99 a month and I’d do it. Can’t justify paying $100 a month for it.

colonelc4 2026-01-14 15:21

If they proposed a bip free with NO Driving assistance at all, I'd subscribe, heck I'd pay for a manual parking brake ! https://preview.redd.it/z3kcknw71cdg1.jpeg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05e2d7f82e17945e33398605b73aaa6868b5e4a1

Stivo887 2026-01-14 15:37

How much you wanna bet he’s actually telling the truth and hits this deadline?

rjcarr 2026-01-14 15:39

And make HW3 like $20 per month, ha.

Theonlyrational 2026-01-14 15:39

Makes it easier to get in my car, tell it where I want to go, and do nothing until it parks me directly in front my destination.

RabbitGullible8722 2026-01-14 15:55

Is it ever going to be fully autonomous? Which models does this apply to because I have never experienced a full trip without having to disengage it multiple times although I haven't tried it for over a year. I would even spend $99 to try it on my 2021 because the hardware I have seems incapable of doing many things like left hand turns merging onto a highway and never have even gotten it to park or summon.

SnortingElk 2026-01-14 16:07

> I haven't tried it for over a year. You should give it another try. FSD has *significantly* improved over the last year.

itsJonathanRN 2026-01-14 16:13

Note: try FSD again on a vehicle equipped with HW4 then yes it is dramatically improved. FSD on a 2021 vehicle with HW3 is still the same software as it was more than a year ago.

SnortingElk 2026-01-14 16:37

Yes, HW3 users are getting a slower, "lite" version of FSD compared to HW4 but it's still a pretty big improvement. Especially since they stated they haven't tried it "for over a year". I own a M3 HW3 and it's definitely improved over the past year. I've also driven HW4 and obviously it's performance improvements are far greater.

unpluggedcord 2026-01-14 16:49

That’s what Rivian’s is priced at, tho it’s not point to point yet

Mysterious-Lick 2026-01-14 17:01

Jokes on them I never bought then and never will. Car’s just fine without it.

Weak_Moment6408 2026-01-14 17:06

Well that fucking sucks… I like owning and not “subscribing”. I fully intended to buy a second Tesla with fsd. Now I will be rethinking that. And if they take away the promotions to transfer fsd I won’t be buying another Tesla period, I’ll just keep fixing the one I have. I’m gonna take a guess he didn’t fully think this through.

Malacasts 2026-01-14 17:13

HW3 only lacks the park at destination, imo. Mine drives me everywhere lol

rjcarr 2026-01-14 18:06

Admittedly, I've only used it a few times, but out of the box it: 1) Started driving 35 mph in a residential 25 mph. I had to adjust setting then it behaved better. 2) Stopped on an (active) train track and got confused and just stayed there. I had to intervene. This was a few months ago so it's probably better now.

Malacasts 2026-01-14 18:08

For point #1 that's a user setting, by default it's 40% offset which is insanely high. And #2 yeah, I could see it. Was it marked properly? We have a lot of train tracks here marked heavily it does good stopping before, but they have the bars, markings all over and lights FSD V12 hasn't changed, it's been idle for a year and Tesla is holding V14 back from HW3 - they claim it's hardware issues, I think it's they learned from iPhone on how to increase sale numbers.

Howry 2026-01-14 18:55

Atleast make HW3 $50. I dont think $100 is unfair for HW4 and beyond but I think prices will go up sadly.

Ar-556 2026-01-14 20:05

Can I ask where u live where u don’t fear fsd to do ur driving. Im always almost grabbing and saving my self from an accident if it isn’t highway driving with fsd

Zentrii 2026-01-14 20:30

So what other electric cars compare to a Tesla and fsd without paying a subscription?

N3M3S1S75 2026-01-14 22:42

The last couple of months I have been ending my subscription services, app,e tv+, Netflix, Spotify, Tesla premium connectivity…. It’s nice to feel unbridled by these services that think they are necessary, will not sub to FSD

Signatureshot2932 2026-01-14 22:51

Go test drive a Model Y 2026 Juniper FSD and you’ll know the vast difference now. FSD is very much all I drive my car with. Summon has improved too.

Present-Ad-9598 2026-01-14 23:09

Are you on hw3 or hw4? And are you in the US? Because hw4 in the US is pretty much perfect everywhere, and hw3 in cities has gotten very good

Theonlyrational 2026-01-14 23:35

I regularly drive throughout Toronto Canada, highways and city streets with few interventions. Generally I need to hit the pedal now and then to nudge it along. Most of my disengages come from the car trying to go into the wrong lane. It has saved me from more collisions than I have saved it.

M3-Driver- 2026-01-15 00:20

Wish it was 49.99

Weak_Moment6408 2026-01-15 02:26

I have no idea, I’ve never looked into other high end evs. But I can tell you that me being me, I’d rather fix my m3 every time it breaks than pay a subscription for something you should have the ability to own. I do know there is a company or two that sell thingamabobs that give other cars fsd like abilities. Might even work on teslas, but I doubt they are as refined as Tesla fsd.

RabbitGullible8722 2026-01-15 02:54

I know a guy that bought a cybertruck recently telling me it drives itself everywhere. I thought my 2019 Honda Accord did better on highway than my 2021 M3. It's so glitchy in the city I only use it on roads I know and even then I know I can't trust it. Round abouts it still can't do with latest updates.

Signatureshot2932 2026-01-15 04:49

Try V14.2.2 the latest.

yolo-yoshi 2026-01-15 11:42

Isn't that like dangerous on the internet lol. Why would he self dox himself? Even if he just gave the state I'm sure thetneould be enough.

yolo-yoshi 2026-01-15 11:45

The matter of fact that the experience in it of itself is different from person to person state to state should tell you all you need to know about the overall quality of the product as of now. Sorry to hear it isn’t working so well for you, for me it is a fucking blast, I am very spoiled with this product and love it to death

rjcarr 2026-01-15 15:08

Mine was just a rental so I don’t have long term experience. Despite the couple mistakes, I was generally super impressed.

RockChalk9799 2026-01-15 17:30

HW3 and HW4 don't drive the same. I've got HW3 and my mom purchased a new one a few months back. I can 100% tell the difference between the two when behind the wheel. It's hard to explain but the HW4 just feels more confident in what it's doing.

Malacasts 2026-01-15 17:32

Yeah, the difference currently is software. V12 vs V14. But, V12 isn't bad and that's what's annoying about these Tesla reddits. They make everyone think HW3 can't drive at all. It's probably 90% FSD for me

RockChalk9799 2026-01-15 17:41

I'm in the 90% range as well. I will say, when I'm in the HW4 it's close to 100%. Some of the little annoying things like the extra long pause for right turn on red isn't there.

Present-Ad-9598 2026-01-15 23:54

The country is an important detail because the software versions vary depending on where you live and different rules/regulations

tweakerinc 2026-01-19 02:41

Hardware 3 or 4? On Hardware 4 FSD was amazing, I barely ever drove anywhere manually.
