2023 Tesla Model 3 SR Subwoofer install

mannystud702 | 2026-01-09 03:44 | 195 views

This post is to anyone that wants to add a aftermarket subwoofer in your 2023 Tesla Model 3, im here to tell you your in luck cause I just figured out how ! Without any resistor, relay, crap. First go check out this awsome install video( won't let me post link. Check the comments) This is exactly how to do it . You must get the Diamond Audio amp (micro81u) to make this work which is shown in the video . Power is grabbed from the 16v battery in the frunk. No issues at all. Running strong for a whole month, I do delivery work with Amazon and Walmart, so im 100 percent sure you won't have any issues. Just follow the install video and you should be good , let me know if you have any questions. Thank the lord its possible, cause I was losing hope , and the standard range has no factory sub so its very much needed.

Looks good! What is the first song you played?

deej628 2026-01-09 04:11

Play da blow by lil Jon and the east side boyz. Thank me later.

Ballsnaps 2026-01-09 04:15

That's how I ran the power for my amp, the 16v. It's been running smoothly for 2 years at this point.

BTC0nly 2026-01-09 04:16

Purchased this last year. Looked how much of a pain it is to connect with all the extra b.s. aside from that rant, how does it sound??! Do ya love it?

IWantToPlayGame 2026-01-09 04:26

That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing OP!

TemporaryGap7328 2026-01-09 04:28

Wish i would’ve saw this a year ago

Southernboyj 2026-01-09 04:31

Good lookin by Dixon Dallas

EngineerCarNerdRun 2026-01-09 04:32

I installed an amp and sub 7 years ago in my 2018 model 3. Grabbed the 12v output from under the rear passenger seat. Made install super easy.

mannystud702 2026-01-09 04:48

Rammstien lol

mannystud702 2026-01-09 04:49

Yessirr 👌 Ain't nothing like feeling that bass

mannystud702 2026-01-09 04:51

Im ecstatic ! I first wired it in the back battery , obviously got all those error lights and returned all my shit. Few months later I tried this out and thank god I did .

mannystud702 2026-01-09 04:52

Dope, yeah the 2023 models dont like the power getting plugged in the back haha found that out the hard way.

Strangities 2026-01-09 05:09

Ah, a man of culture.

Captain_Klrk 2026-01-09 05:13

Thats clean. I have one in the sub trunk and it disperses well through the cabin but this probably slams.

BSCA 2026-01-09 05:19

Not sure why he didn't use the penthouse terminals under rear seats. There's bolts that you slap a ring terminal on and run the wire right back to the trunk.

CJdawg_314 2026-01-09 05:33

This^^

CJdawg_314 2026-01-09 05:34

Sweet setup! I’ve been running my JL Audio JD500/1 for 2 years now. No issues. I did try running a more powerful NVX NDA1200/1 which caused problems so I went back to the JL. If u wana run bigger powers the relays and stuff r a must. Seems around 500w RMS doesn’t freak the system out.

rpkusuma 2026-01-09 05:44

How much did this cost you?

mrandr01d 2026-01-09 05:45

Can you actually hear this with good fidelity from the cabin or do you just feel the thump? Or is this just for like tailgating or something?

HistoricalJob2807 2026-01-09 06:02

Yeah that’s the spot. Going three years strong with an alpine 500w amp.

mannystud702 2026-01-09 06:10

With a 2023 you dont do this ! Already tried that and ended up with a bunch of warning lights. Thats why.

mannystud702 2026-01-09 06:12

Ypu definitely can feel the bass in the driver seat. Bumps hard. And thats with my bass knob very low.

mannystud702 2026-01-09 06:12

Around 380$ depends if you get the amp and sub on sale

BSCA 2026-01-09 06:16

I have heard of that. But I have a 100W sub hooked up there and I haven't had any lights. Might be that I'm drawing way less amps.

Dorkrain 2026-01-09 06:40

I didn't know you needed to draw positive and negative from the left side controller and right side controller. But it makes sense since your putting in two speakers. Also do you have an overview where exacly into the plug the positive and negative go? Btw I want to install a single sub in the trunk right hand side in my Sr plus. Any tips or videos for that?

upsndwns 2026-01-09 07:53

Low power amps work fine at the penthouse. I don't know where the upper threshold is, or if it's been tested, but there are ways to do it. I've had a 150w amp on it for 2 years, no problem. I'll be upgrading to a 500w+ amp next week, still from the penthouse in my 2023. I've got the workaround parts already in case it doesn't like it.

Moistinterviewer 2026-01-09 08:09

The battery in the frunk doesn’t get charged at high capacity, I run a 5kw system and you can’t run anything like that from the frunk, only low powered systems

Moistinterviewer 2026-01-09 08:10

That’s because you are not a professional installer and didn’t do it correctly.

locksmack 2026-01-09 10:35

I’ve got a 200w amp running from the penthouse in my 2021 SR+ with no issues. I’ve heard inrush current is the problem.

locksmack 2026-01-09 10:38

As an alternative to anyone who is keen on a sub but wants to keep it as OEM as possible - many people, including myself, have installed the Tesla sub from the LR/P in the stock location - nice and hidden. Unfortunately it requires an aftermarket amp, but that can fit in the hidden area too.

IGNORED34 2026-01-09 11:35

Can you share the link to that? Subwoofer and kit

Oaker51 2026-01-09 14:53

Not exactly related, but man do I love the stock stereo in my 21 M3 LR. Best car stereo I’ve ever had.

kbsc3024 2026-01-09 15:16

You have the premium sound system included with the LR right?

EngineerCarNerdRun 2026-01-09 15:54

That sucks they don’t have the power under the rear seat anymore and you had to go all the way to the Frunk.

That_guy1902 2026-01-09 16:05

This will work, but if you want more power, I highly recommend you read my write up on how to do this with basically any sized amp you want. Schematics and such are included https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModel3/s/snN10rkQWo

matttopotamus 2026-01-09 16:43

I immediately thought of pimp my ride.

mannystud702 2026-01-09 17:10

In the YouTube video link has the link on where to buy. But honestly you just need either this 500w rms amp or the 600w rms amp , ill post screen shots. https://preview.redd.it/l3eynw56wccg1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=be79b1ef77089dbca26c8ade7f0a7cd10ca8a0f4

mannystud702 2026-01-09 17:18

I then used 8 gauge amp wiring kit, get one that has a good insulated fuse holder so water doesnt get in it from the crappy frunk design. Then all you need is a nice sub box for the Tesla. I used the skar stealth sub came with the sub. Or you can just get the box and add your own shallow sub to it.

phantom4421 2026-01-09 18:39

"subbed" lol

Oaker51 2026-01-09 19:57

I believe so.

mrandr01d 2026-01-09 22:55

So it's just thumpy and it doesn't even really sound better.

mannystud702 2026-01-10 00:16

How do you know sir? You dont know my background.

mannystud702 2026-01-10 00:18

....brah just get it. It's worth it. Makes the sounds system 10x better. Or not, up to you.

mannystud702 2026-01-10 00:19

Watch the YouTube video link that I posted in the comments. They tell you exactly what wires to tap to get the speaker signal.

Moistinterviewer 2026-01-10 01:23

Sorry, not a competent installer.

mannystud702 2026-01-10 01:27

Lmao ur funny mann

Moistinterviewer 2026-01-10 01:32

Well what do you expect? A professional installer that couldn’t get the amp working at the penthouse? So you rig it to the battery in the front, that battery only gets a small charge from the penthouse, it’s not enough to run a decent amplifier. Where did you get the trigger from?

rpkusuma 2026-01-10 02:30

Did you do the install yourself? How much if I were to go to a professional?

mannystud702 2026-01-10 06:40

I did the install myself.

Dorkrain 2026-01-10 07:19

Perfect, thanks

Bcash_Moderator 2026-01-10 09:25

Because you wrote in your first post that you work for Amazon and I don’t think they do audio installs, no professional installer would fit an amp to the battery because the feed to the battery is so small, it will 11v and damage the battery and other components if you run too much power, you only have to look at the wires running to it to know that

davemenkehorst 2026-01-10 19:21

So what about lowpass and highness filters? And do you connect the amp to a sub out? (post volume?) Do you need to blend in the subwoofer with that bas knob?

Prestigious_Dig_932 2026-01-10 21:40

Nice

mannystud702 2026-01-10 22:58

Bro what

TheLightKyanite 2026-01-10 23:29

It’s because you didn’t have a resistor and relay setup most likely. I’ve been running 1500w off mine with over a year now with no issues. I even plan on potentially upgrading to 3000w potentially, which would require getting a second battery https://preview.redd.it/hpfwy5hlwlcg1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edd0cee63d3de4afe9d1e101ee0df830c1e6fcaa

metroidhacker 2026-01-10 23:39

Damn, did you dynamat the whole trunk to amen it sound good? I got the alpine kit and you can tell how much they don't insulate when that tiny think is vibrating the whole car

TheLightKyanite 2026-01-10 23:54

I plan to but I haven’t yet unfortunately. I had to get rid of my wing I had on my car and a trunk because it genuinely sounded so horrible. It sounds way better now, but from the outside you can definitely hear the rattles. I’m going to do it very soon. How do you like the Alpine Kit? I’ve been curious about that one just for the speakers mainly

mrandr01d 2026-01-11 02:14

Absolutely not lmao

mannystud702 2026-01-11 02:40

Lol cool

HistoricalJob2807 2026-01-11 13:45

I have a 23 sr. We do this. Maybe your amp is pulling massive power when it hits hard. I have heard people put 1000w to the penthouse. Tesla motor club (forum)has a lot of info that might help with your future mods. I am on there and I have learned a lot about my car.

Miserable_Summer273 2026-01-15 02:57

I don’t believe there are outputs. He’s likely grabbing the sound from the rear speakers. I’ve always imagined using an lc2i audio converter off the rear speakers would work fine. I believe those have filters for adjustment on them. I think what he is highlighting here mostly is how on newer models it’s required to pull power from battery up in the front of the vehicle instead of under the rear seat. This way you avoid error codes. On older 3’s with 12v you could pull power off the rear up to a certain point without tripping anything and without adding relays or getting too crazy. Yes the bass knob is gonna be needed to adjust to a certain degree but the lc2i would supply volume so it wouldn’t be like you’re always adjusting the sub. Just when switching genres maybe

metroidhacker 2026-01-20 19:11

Sorry for the late reply, the alpine kit it's self is nice that it's pretty straightforward to install but definitely a tight fit, the speaker in my opinion sounds pretty good, has plenty of power considering it's being driven by a pretty small amp. The only think I don't like about it is it's got no adjustments outside your eq settings which I find makes it difficult to dial in cause I like bass punch but I don't need to have the public hear it too. Outside of zero adjustment I think it's a pretty good if you just want the sub but if you plan to expand beyond that it will leave something to be desired.

TheLightKyanite 2026-01-21 11:11

Interesting, that’s cool. So the alpine speakers get louder? I have to blast my volume up sometimes because my subwoofers can overpower it sometimes, but I’ve done a lot of tuning to fix that

metroidhacker 2026-01-21 18:13

Yea I barely have it turned up in the dash I think only +1 on the sub and that's down from 5-6 which is still way louder then stock but that's mostly for the resonating I am getting that I need to fix at some point in the future

Zealousideal-Put6996 2026-02-08 04:54

Literally fucking how

PunchNuggz 2026-03-04 17:14

What size is your box?

TheLightKyanite 2026-03-04 18:11

Width x Height x Depth 34.00" × 14.00" × 20.96"

LSDBunnos 2026-03-04 18:15

How did you do this? Can you please share more?

locksmack 2026-03-04 21:04

https://youtu.be/bKi3jttFC8o?si=WD9HeE-ZrMBsVeau

PunchNuggz 2026-03-04 23:09

Thanks. I was looking at building a 36" x 14" x 23.5. So seeing your box really puts everything into perspective. I appreciate the response.

TheLightKyanite 2026-03-04 23:11

No worries. Just a warning, you know the top black plastic piece at the entrance of the trunk? I had to take that off to get this box to fit. I’d say the max height is probably like 15 for a box but that’s pushing it

PunchNuggz 2026-03-04 23:13

That's good to know. I thought if I had a hard time that way, I may lay the seats down and push it through.

TheLightKyanite 2026-03-04 23:14

That could work too. Can probably just takes the seats off temporarily to squeeze it in there too lol
