Crack on my Tesla Model 3

Soft_Helicopter_664 | 2026-01-06 11:40 | 50 views

I live in France and woke up in the morning to defrost my car. I then went to scrape it and suddenly noticed a crack in the windshield. I am certain that it was caused by the de-icer. The de-icer was at 27°C, yet Tesla's official statement says that it is "safe to use and will not damage the vehicle." I think the crack was caused by the heat from the windshield with snow on it. 🚨Do not use the defrost mode during periods of inclement weather.

I would defrost at 21

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 11:48

Dammm thankyou 🙏🏽

Dependent_Clock3579 2026-01-06 11:48

Happened to me the other day using defrost mode. Take pictures upload to service center if there is no physical damage to the windshield such as rock chips it will be covered under warranty.

dmidgley27 2026-01-06 11:49

Happened to me my first winter now I scrape the windshield and warm the car up before using the defrosters

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 11:50

I'll do that next time. Thank you for your comment.

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 11:51

Yes, I called customer service and was able to get a warranty.

JohntheGeek 2026-01-06 11:51

You're now an official Tesla owner. I'm on my second windshield. I don't know what it is about Tesla windows; they seem soft. I've never encountered this issue with previous cars.

Dependent_Clock3579 2026-01-06 11:51

Even better

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 11:52

Yes, I feel like the glass is really fragile 😭

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 11:55

Ye

herr_akkar 2026-01-06 12:40

I experienced this with all my previous cars, even worse. On my M3, it happened after 5 years, which is a record. Otherwise, I am used to replacing my windshield every 2-3 years on each of our family cars.

billyoceans 2026-01-06 12:41

I'm on my third. Thank god I have glass coverage on my insurance

kjmass1 2026-01-06 12:45

In my RWD ‘23 I always hear a pop after I’ve been in the car for 5 minutes or so. Happens in cold and heat. Definitely the top glass moving.

_ascii_ 2026-01-06 12:58

The glass on the Tesla Model three seems to be incredibly prone to cracking. My M3P from 2020 has a crack in the rear passenger roof glass and the windshield. I drive a lot of miles admittedly but this will be my third windshield once I replace it. I don't do anything odd with the car, and clean it and check for chips regularly so feel it's got to be either the glass or I'm incredibly unlucky. Given the other posts on here about cracked windscreens etc I'm leaning towards it either being a poor glass that's used or the design of the car somehow lends itself to chipping and cracking.

CANOFBEANS78 2026-01-06 13:18

I believe Tesla uses Saint-Gobain Sekurit, same glass supplier many other manufacturers use. Bad luck

Equivalent-Web-1084 2026-01-06 13:44

What do you mean

Lonely-Implement4824 2026-01-06 13:56

After my 2nd windshield, I finally installed ClearPlex Windshield protection film. For anyone on the fence: do it. Xpel makes a good film too. Especially if you just got a fresh glass on warranty/insurance, it’s the best time to lock it in.

So is there a recommended defrost type process from Tesla? Preconditioning rather than defrosting? Or setting a lower temp to precondition to so the temp difference isn't as extreme?

Entire-County5333 2026-01-06 14:09

Same thing happened to me a few years ago when using the defrost mode. I've never used it since.

Anakil_brusbora 2026-01-06 14:13

Happened to me on my 2019 model 3 (in Belgium), few month after delivery in 2019 winter (and i was only warming up to 21°c). It was a series of rear glasses of these early model 3 that had this issue at the time, we all had the "crack" in the middle layer of the glass where the defrosting line are. It was taken under warranty without issue, replaced in a day. I suppose you got another glass with that problem, it isn't really possible to check them individually for any manufacturer (it isn't done by them), and it happens for all brand as far as i know, just bad luck, at least warranty cover all of it. Since then, i use the defrosting daily without issue (everyday the car warm up to 21°c automatically), never got any other issue.

Anakil_brusbora 2026-01-06 14:19

The crack is within the glass in these cases (in the inner layer where the defrosting lines are), so it is independent of what you do. If the glass is faulty like that, it will crack quite soon (all the people i read, including myself, got the crack only few month after delivery), otherwise you are good for probably all the car live. Since the replacement under warranty, i still warm the car everyday at 20-21°c automatically in the morning (the car is sitting outside), never got any issue with the new glass. And from my cases, the crack was 1 meter long, but only within this inner layer, and so touching the glass i couldn't feel anything, it was still perfectly functional just with a big crack in it. \^\^

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 14:42

I don't think the quality of the windshields is very good.

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 14:43

Yeah I think 😭😭

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 14:44

That crazy 😞

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 14:45

Thank god for the insurance

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 14:47

I'm really unlucky😭

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 14:49

Rlly ?? I hear a « crack » yersterday, to on my car, i think that Why I have this😭

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 14:50

Ohhh okay thx i will see that

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 14:53

I think Tesla cars should be parked indoors during the winter months.

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 14:54

I think I'll do the same thing as you now😭🤣🤣

Anakil_brusbora 2026-01-06 14:58

Obviously like all cars, it is better to park indoor, but having it outside for 6 years now, and the car still run well without issue with that. It just require more regular cleaning. :p

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 15:07

Yes, I clean it almost every day, and honestly, I'm quite surprised that it's doing this to me now, but I've received a lot of advice and, above all, I've seen that I'm not the only one in this situation 😅

Castro96 2026-01-06 16:46

They are fine, but no windshield can withstand a heatpump on max with a thick layer of snow. Just heat the car up with normal preheat set to 20c 20 min before you drive and just brush the rest of snow away when you get to the car.

herr_akkar 2026-01-06 16:50

Yes, when soft winter tires are picking up the gravel that is strewn on our icy roads for friction in winter, the gravel is thrown out whenever a car is accelerating, hitting the car behind.

Enjoy_The_Ride413 2026-01-06 17:29

I never use defrost. I saw that it sets max temp and was fine with the normal warming the car up to my desired temp of 70 degrees F.

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 18:33

Okay thank you 🙏🏽😁

Dependent_Clock3579 2026-01-06 19:26

I was using defrost to melt the snow off my car normally I just let it warm up to 70 as well

Enjoy_The_Ride413 2026-01-06 19:28

Bummer! Sorry to hear.

johnmaddenmoney 2026-01-06 20:43

Same thing happened to mine. Literally just had it replaced yesterday at Tesla for $1400. They said there was impact that caused it but I’m almost certain there wasn’t. Lesson learned never use max defrost option and I refuse to pay them $16 a month for windshield protection.

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-06 22:22

Rlly???

ExoShield 2026-01-06 22:28

Oh no, replacing windshields is never fun 😞 Have you heard of Windshield Protection Film? There are products on the market that are designed to defend your windshield from rocks and road debris.

johnmaddenmoney 2026-01-06 22:28

Yes I only had the car for 3 weeks when it snowed and not thinking about it I turned on max defrost and once it cleared I noticed the crack. The spot where the crack started is down in the black area near the windshield wipers.

hmspain 2026-01-07 04:48

Or live in Southern California! /s

Tudz 2026-01-07 05:24

Stop following so close to trucks this has never happened to me in 5 years

Soft_Helicopter_664 2026-01-07 09:27

Damm

tibetsoul 2026-01-08 18:55

Rock chips and defrost in cold weather always create problems…

not_steve_5000 2026-01-09 13:31

Setting the target to 20 instead of 27/max likely doesn’t affect the temperature of the air coming from the vent, just when it stops heating?

Additional_Many_2087 2026-01-09 19:56

had the same shaped crack two weeks ago. service replaced the windshield for free. had to wait a week for an appointment. hope it doesnt happen over and over again. no snow or cold weather here in so cal so...

Castro96 2026-01-16 20:58

Try to sit in the car with climate control ON vs defrost mode. It’s a huge difference.
