It can. Same thing with some car blind spot monitoring systems. However, most high end detectors have filter blocks for common proximity warning sensors and such. Most of the time the pickup range will be very short as the signal isn’t strong. So the RD may alert within like 20 or 30 feet or less.

I agree ya speed lmit are well below the 85th percentile, but at least in my area the cops know that too. They normally don't care if you stay within 10mph of the limit and sometimes within 20mph of the limit and I don't find a need to even get a radar for my car. There is a highway near me that's a 55mph limit that EVERYONE goes 70-75 on and cops sitting on the shoulder won't blink unless you are going significantly faster than flow of traffic, IDK maybe just me I don't find a need for countermeasures unless im planning on excessively speed or driving recklessly (Which I don't btw)
Legitimately how many times has these equipment actually saved you from a speeding ticket? (Ex. you were going 25 over on an empty highway when the radar went off, actual high risk of a speeding ticket)

By the way, this is the best thing I've seen posted in this sub.
Threeofnine000
2026-01-04 21:52
It’s hard to say exactly how many times I’ve been saved, although there have definitely been several obvious saves. But the fact that I’ve been driving for nearly 3 decades and have never received a ticket is some evidence of effectiveness. Especially considering when I was in my early 20s, I had a sports car and was a bit extreme (young and dumb).
Threeofnine000
2026-01-04 21:53
Probably the radar detector. If I lived in a state with very high LiDAR usage, such as Georgia, the laser jammers would take number one spot. Followed by the app and police scanner

True. But, I also said it is kind of a weird hobby of mine so that is part of it. It does help me to be very much aware of what is going on around me. Most people who get tickets are not paying attention. With my equipment I have a much better idea of law-enforcement activity around me, I’ve also learned a lot of their common tactics and methods.

I've got an Escort radar detector, but there is so much laser in my state I think it may be time to upgrade to the laser jammer. I get a lot of false positives from blind spot detection on other cars. My state is moving to encrypted police radios currently, so I can't go that route, but the thermal camera seems fascinating. Does it save you very often?
s7orm
2026-01-04 22:00
Yeah that makes sense for blind spot systems. My radar should be closer to 150 yards, but I'd assume this is mainly for highway use anyway.

A godsend driving through GA on 75 south of ATL. I swear the cops there have lasers blanketing the highway near small towns.
This is a neat hobby. Lots of people use Waze not even realize that they’re seeing into what used to be a hidden world of law enforcement (not just speed traps, but accidents and other emergencies) whether they’re speeding recklessly or not. It’s never a bad thing to be informed. Best of luck and you’d better knock on some wood haha

The system uses AI and will give you an audible tone if it detects an animal or person. It’s not a perfect AI system, occasionally it will also alert to non animal objects with a high heat signature, such as black trash cans shortly after sunset, but it is very useful so you don’t have to constantly look at the screen.

I’ve got the escort redline 360c and the integrated ZR6 laser jammers (escort calls them “shifters”). Stealth install on my 24 M3P, I’ve been running this setup for around a year.
The laser jammers have saved my ass twice when I definitely got tagged by a hidden trooper, most recently in the dark and rain at some distance. No way I would have seen him, and he was not running radar to alert me earlier.
Around here the cops are usually lazy and will run around with the radar on (or it’s some in-motion system) and the 360c will warn me of their presence from very far away. It’s the hidden troopers with laser that will bust you for sure if you’re speeding excessively.

If you’re an iOS user you really only have one choice. Highway Radar is available on iOS as a beta via test flight (get the access on rdforum). I am also an iOS user but I bought a cheap secondary android phone to run highway radar and JBV1. I use my iPhone’s hotspot to connect it.

Threeofnine000
2026-01-05 01:17
Keep in mind, the iOS version is cut down compared to the android version. It’s still very very useful, it just is lacking a few features such as it doesn’t pull other non-police data from Waze (such as objects in the road) and the audio alerts are not quick as refined
Threeofnine000
2026-01-05 01:20
Also, JBV1 will actually datamine the speeds of Waze users ahead of and behind you so it can give you a rough idea of how fast traffic ahead of you is moving. Although I’ve not found that particularly useful and it’s occasionally bugged

Ive gone 20 years without a ticket myself, and do you want to know how much I have spent on "countermeasures"? Zero.....ZEROOOOOOOO..nothing....nada......I don't drive like a tool. On longer trips I may do 7 over.....around town I don't speed because it doesn't save you any time. For all you know you are just speeding to the next red light......where if you did the speed limit you would roll straight through. The radar detector industry has made a fortune from people like you......but you will NEVER be able to beat what they have. At least not 100% of the time. Just do what the rest of us do......do 5-7 over and hope that some over zealous or bored officer doesn't take notice of you.
Edit: That front facing LIDAR doesn't save you from the officers behind you neither.

I loved my Escort 8500ci. Everything was clean install and did all the things you could want. Next put it in my model 3, but saved me many times in my WRX. The front bumper is a tricky spot for the blockers
Threeofnine000
2026-01-05 03:00
In my area, it is very useful. Particularly monitoring the highway patrol. When I first started listening to the scanner, it was pretty much gibberish. However, after listening for a while, I pretty much learned how to decipher useful information. I have learned all the 10 codes, all the individual trooper call signs, which ones patrol what areas etc. also, almost all of the frequencies in my area are not encrypted, hopefully it stays that way.

2026-01-05 03:02
Out of curiosity, what happens when you're obviously speeding but the cop has no reading on their laser gun, and when they pull you over they can see the laser jammer on the bumper? Do they just write the ticket anyway and wait for you to contest it? Or do they just give you a very stern warning?
Threeofnine000
2026-01-05 03:05
It depends, every time I’ve encountered laser nothing has happened. However, my jammer has a timer option. I have it set where it will jam for three seconds and then turn off. This gives me time to slow down before the officer gets his reading. He probably doesn’t even know I’m using one. Even though jammers are legal in my state, I still use this timer because I want them to stay legal.
If you were just continuously jamming, and in one of the 13 states where jammers are illegal, that might draw their attention.

I doubt it. They are probably operating on a different wavelength than police laser guns. I believe some car brands also use LiDAR, such as Cadillac. However, I’ve never received a false signal. Some of the high-end laser jammers will actually identify the model of the laser gun so I assume they have the frequencies programmed.

How are you liking the Uniden? I bought an R8 from bestbuy and returned it the next day. It was so annoying that it picked up every fucking vehicle sensor. Dad loaned me his Valentine V1 and I ended up buying one. I love the simplicity and directional arrows and it doesn’t chirp 24/7 with every Chevy or ford that is next to me on the highway. Doesn’t even pick up department store doors.
As far as the setup, it’s dope. I like all that you got. You really saying that a jammer is legal in your state? I’d double check not just local laws but federal law. Your state might not enforce it but the Feds don’t mess around.
What I want to put in my MYP is a CB radio to troll people. lol

The part I'm most interested in is the one you gave the least detail on. What thermal camera and display, if you don't mind? How is the refresh when traveling at highway or higher speeds? I really fuckin' want one, but want it to feel OEM. I like how yours looks

What about the uniden R4. I looked up your R8 and am not keen on spending $800. It seemed pretty capable when comparing cost.

It lacks directional arrows. It helps to know which direction the signal is coming from considering it may be miles away.

So $400 for an arrow😂. Seems if it’s going off, I just need to slow down regardless. But hey I’ve spent $750 on three different speeding tickets with my new lawyer friend. 2 for my girlfriend and one for me. M3P we’ve both been abusing😂. I mean if the R4 has similar range as the R8, I could give up the arrow. Though I saw the R7 also has arrows and is a little bit cheaper.

It’s a fine detector if you can do without the arrows. I can’t after having them. The R7 is also amazing, I have two of them and I’d recommend it over the R4. Especially with the international firmware (read about it on RDforums)
Hot-Swan2280
2026-01-06 01:00
And pardon my ignorance, but if the detector detects a laser pulse, aren’t you already busted?
Hot-Swan2280
2026-01-06 01:04
The r7 is $500 and a little more palatable to me. I know cheap radars are shit, and I do abuse the speed of my car, so $500 is probably worth the peace of mind. How much are jammers and do I need one😂

Was just shopping the same on Amazon. $300 cheaper than the R8. Seems a better value. Had radar detectors in the past , but hated constant alerts from grocery stores and such. Does it actually learn to stop those after traveling your normal routes like to work everyday?
Threeofnine000
2026-01-06 02:05
Yes you are. Radar detectors are pretty much useless against laser. Over half the time they won’t even alert because the laserbeam will not get high enough to touch them. Laser jammers are your only defense against laser.

2026-01-06 02:06
Can’t go wrong with the R7. The R8 and R4 will have a little bit longer range, but in real world conditions that usually only amount to 200 or 300 feet. Laser jammers range from between $800 and $2500. You definitely need one.

Ive been driving since around that time too and haven't got a ticket either. It's called being smart and running the vehicle hard when it's smart to do without needing all that cool tech.

The kit is robofinity. The refresh rate is quite good, I would even say you could drive with your lights off if you mount it on your hood, which is how they recommend you mount it.

Yeah, in Georgia you dont even get points until 15mph over. Most places in the state they won't bother pulling you over unless you hit 15mph over....unless it's the dicks with GSP and speed trap haven Tifton.

Yes. That's called auto GPS lock-up. Which is available on R7

K I’ll look into it. But jammers sound expensive. You’ve been super insightful. Just don’t know how to integrate it into my M3P . Worried about powering an R7 without a cigarette lighter, much less powering laser jammers and how to mount and power them on my car. I’m 55 and not to tech savvy 😂. F-ing love my car though and drive it like a 16 year old!!!! But I am 55 nonetheless, and know to protect my speedy inclinations lately. What am I looking at for a jammer install, and say an R7 purchase? Saw an Escort 260 I think with jammers as well. It’s gonna cost a thousand near as I can figure😂. I love jamming my car though, so MAYBE worth it?? Appreciate your insight

Was driving back to CA from Reno one time, I drive fast to keep me awake (a bit sleepy and tired). This car decided to try and catch up with me. Ofcourse he couldn't and he's probably 20 cars away after some safe overtakes, i could see he is a bit frustrated trying hard. My Waze notifies me 'police up ahead ' I begin to slow down and take the right lane and sure enough this car sees me slowing down and probably thought its time to pass me after few failed attempts and he did going at 100 mph..as soon as he passed me I see red and blue lights come up and gets pulled over a few miles ahead. 😂🤣😆 I was actually following them with police right behind him and won't even pull over...lol...
I dont think i could drive that fast now actually on the Teslas (have MY and M3), yes its quick but won't try sustaining that speed too long (quicker battery drain), can only go fast in a few bursts. Or best, I just hit auto pilot and drive about 3 to 5 miles over speed limit so as not to slow down flow of traffic, I'm in CA..😁

Bringing the 18V down to 12V or similar should be fairly possible with a dc-dc converter, although it does require some knowledge of electronics and may need soldering too for connectors…

Yeah I've actually got some converters left from 3d printer modifications, I think I could pretty easily tuck one up into the front camera cover.
