Traffic circles!

Stridyr | 2026-01-04 01:35 | 25 views

I just allowed my 'self steering' to go thru a traffic circle to see what would happen: it wasn't good! Lol! Fortunately, I had my hands on the wheel but it asked me to touch the wheel twice and then attempted to run over the center curb. Poor thing had a conniption! I have a 2020 M3 AWD/LR. Apparently, I'm not allowed to ask what your experiences have been like, but I'd like to know. I was wondering if this might be an example of the difference between HW3 and 4.

Do you even have FSD?

What_The_Tech 2026-01-04 01:45

FSD handles roundabouts fine, but autosteer/autopilot will certainly have trouble. The autopilot system (autosteer+TACC) was originally only designed for highway driving where it just needed to stay in its lane and follow the curve of the road. It was later adapted to be better at non-highway roads, though it still won’t do anything with sharp turns or merging or converging road lines lines. Pretty much all those things can be found at a roundabout. I’m surprised it tried as hard as it did instead of just immediately giving up and forcing you to take over. It still can be fun to test its limits when there’s a safe clearing to do so.

Buddy, you have Autosteer, not FSD. Autosteer is just a lane assist system. You need FSD for more advanced maneuvers like traffic circles.

Nope, not yet! Apparently I was expecting too much from autosteer, lol!

PlinyTheElderest 2026-01-04 01:54

It’s only for highway use

Stridyr 2026-01-04 01:55

Well, that explains that! Thanks for the explanation! It was fun to test and yes, it was a safe area to do so. I've had a heck of a time getting used to allowing the car to do anything with the steering wheel! I'm going to wet my pants when I try my first FSD trip!

Hw3 on my 32 fsd handles roundabouts fine, no issues

Trick-Yogurtcloset45 2026-01-04 02:16

I went through I think 3 roundabouts with Autopilot up north driving to Big Sir. It did surprisingly well. 2026 MY Juniper.

Had this issue too with FSD. It seems large roundabouts work fine but the smaller traffic circles that are placed in already too small intersections do not work well

To_Minster 2026-01-04 06:28

It took me a while to work out what a traffic circle was! Yeah, roundabouts are a no go for basic AP. Just freaks it.

I’m assuming you’re not on FSD..?

Stridyr 2026-01-05 01:14

Not yet. I'm planning on subscribing and I've got hw3 so I was curious about other people's experiences, with and without FSD. I've been seeing 'hints' that FSD and 'Autosteer' had different capabilities but I didn't realize that they were so extreme. It'll be interesting to see the difference!

Are you… real?😭 respectfully

Stridyr 2026-01-05 15:46

Interesting! I never realized that not being familiar with a feature is grounds for being downvoted and slammed in this channel! O well, life goes on. Downvote away, people!

I drive roundabouts nearly every day and Tesla FSD handles them like a champ. Every time.

It’s how you talk. Gives off robot vibes

Wow! Ok, thanks for the input!
