Might have been scammed by Tesla

Adventurous-Cup-1958 | 2026-01-01 17:27 | 26 views

I bought my wife a 2021 model 3 about a year ago (bought from a Volkswagen dealer) and have been itching to replace my Chevy Bolt with one as well since I like all of the technology features and the way the car drives. I finally pulled the trigger on a used 2021 model 3 LR dual motor that I found on the Tesla used inventory. Tesla also offered me the highest amount for my trade in by over $1000. The car needed to be transported just 2 states away, which I happily agreed to pay the transport fee since it still came out to a good deal with the trade in value factored in. Here comes the frustration. I used 3rd party financing since the interest rates through Tesla are horrible. Getting them to work with my lender was the biggest headache I’ve ever experienced while buying a car. Every text, every phone call to ask a question for my lender resulted in talking to a different person, and also conflicting answers. The day before my scheduled delivery date (12/24/25) I finally get my financing finalized and am issued the check. I leave the house on the morning of my delivery appointment (which I had to request off of work for on top of an additional day off to finalize my financing) and I get a message from Tesla saying my car has been delayed in shipment and my new delivery date is scheduled for 2pm on the 29th, which was not going to work for me because I couldn’t request off of work with such little notice. I called and told them my frustration of taking off of work to get everything set up and already being on the way to the location (I live over 2hrs away from my closest Tesla showroom) and after some back and forth they agreed to wave my transportation fee as compensation. They also told me that scheduling a delivery day before the car arrives on site is against policy and never should have happened. We agreed to not set a delivery date until the car arrives and is ready for delivery. On the 29th I get a message saying the car has arrived and I need to schedule, but I was forced to take delivery before the new year. I was forced to set an appointment for 7:30pm on the 31st as that was the earliest that I could be there after leaving work. Fine, whatever, I’ll be there and we can get this frustration over with. Not sure why I was forced to take delivery on the 31st instead of waiting until I could come during the day the following week as I had no incentives or any time sensitive agreements to my knowledge. Now the potential scam. I get there and check in, verify everything, sign the DMV agreements, hand over the check, and head out to find the car. After looking it over I found 2 almost bald t1res (down to the wear bar) and the car has the wrong door panels. Confused by this I didn’t accept my agreement yet and go inside to talk to the woman who checked me in. She tells me that it should be ready for delivery since it passed the used car teams inspection, so I made her go out and look at the car herself to show her my concerns. She agreed that it wasn’t right but the service center was closed so there wasn’t anything we could do before I take delivery. She told me my only option was to take delivery and she would put in a request with the used car department to have it fixed. I had her take pictures of the concerns and email it to them and was assured that someone would reach out to me as soon as the used team and service department open back up. Again, she said “the only option is to take delivery of the car.” I take delivery of the car, set everything up. On the way home the first thing I noticed was the wind noise from the drivers side window. Not a little whistle, but a sound like the window was open. I had to yell over it to talk to my passenger. Decided I needed to make a service appointment to have that fixed under warranty. It was also cold out so when I remembered I had a heated steering wheel I went to turn it on and boom, no heated steering wheel. Already livid I start looking through everything and found I also didn’t have the active beam headlights that supposedly came standard in the long range dual motor of this model year. The EQ settings for the sub don’t say BOOM when turned all the way up, which made me think it probably doesn’t have the updated sound system either. I decide to look the car over when it’s light out to see what else is wrong with this car. This morning I go out and see the front bumper had been repainted and it is BAD. In the sun the pearl white paint was super splotchy. Also, comparing it to my wife’s car, sure enough the headlights that were installed are the old style headlights without the projector section that actively dims pixels. I’m furious at this point. I wouldn’t have bought this car if it wasn’t supposed to have these features. The car is worth significantly less without them, so I feel like I overpaid for this car by a few thousand dollars at least. It is basically a 2020 with a different console and a heat pump. Had this been a standard dealership and I had been given a chance to test drive the car I would have passed on it and kept looking. I just need to know if there is anything that I can do to have Tesla remedy this, or if I’m screwed since I already took delivery. This has been the absolute worst car buying experience I have ever had, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I’m not even sure if Tesla is actually going to issue me that refund for the transportation fee like I was promised, because my delivery advisor didn’t know how I would be issued that. TLDR Tesla scammed me into buying a 2021 LR with a bunch of missing features, 2 almost bald t1res, a window that doesn’t seal, and light body damag. Am I screwed since I took delivery even though I was promised it would be looked at by the used car team when they open after the holiday Edit 1/7/25: Still fighting with Tesla on this. They have mentioned offering a “Due Bill” for the tires but absolutely nothing has been finalized. Getting Tesla to talk to me is impossible, and my texts to my advisor are going days without a response.

You're in good shape if the description of the car differs from actual. Also, I believe legal terms for unseen used cars allows you to cancel once actual vehicle is actually seen.

Why do you spell tires like t1res?

Adventurous-Cup-1958 2026-01-01 17:52

“Tires” is an auto flagged word for this subreddit. Wouldn’t let me post unless I changed it

jzacks92 2026-01-01 17:55

Early 2021 LR model 3 didn’t have the matrix headlights or the heated steering wheel. Also may not have the automatic trunk so check for that as well. If it was built prior to March it’s likely missing all those as well as the heat pump.

Honestly, I’ve had better experience with my 2018, and atleast in my experience out here in the Bay Area not only did they entertain my concerns but also replaced several things out of courtesy. It all comes down to your service center and I’m sorry to hear this happened to you. Here are a few other things you can check and get addressed too, door check straps, if the doors make loud clack clack noises upon opening and closing, those need to get replaced, any suspension noises, that’s under warranty, but suspension has to be done asap or else they will consider it user damage and not an error on their end. Interior rear view mirror shaking excessively on bass and similar thing with the side mirrors. Also with the sound system. Put the bass to max, and then put sub to max and you shall see it go boom 9001 etc. Heated steering wheel not working is warrantable too. IMO you are in a strong position as long as it’s documented and it’s on their database which it looks like since you addressed it to the delivery team. Tires being almost bald is UNACCEPTABLE. That’s literally a safety concern in the rain.

Take it back …

Adventurous-Cup-1958 2026-01-01 18:00

The tires thing is 100% a safety concern and that’s what I told the delivery lady and she agreed. I have to hold out until at least tomorrow to talk to the used sales team and service to figure out how they want to handle it. I’ll play around with the sound settings and see what it does. That was something I kind of just set and forget in my wife’s car

Adventurous-Cup-1958 2026-01-01 18:00

If that is an option I will. Didn’t know if I legally could

Adventurous-Cup-1958 2026-01-01 18:04

It has the automatic trunk, wireless charger pad, and the smaller front trunk(so I’m assuming the heat pump is under there). I wouldn’t have agreed to buy this car without all of those features so if it truly is a “it wasn’t built with it” thing then the car is going back if they can’t add them

mrandr01d 2026-01-01 18:13

That's ridiculous, but good to know...

I can understand them wanting to conclude the sale by year end for a few reasons which also include paperwork having been prepared and financing. It’s generally smoother sailing with financing when its local instead of third party from what i’ve seen. Although some bank lenders and credit unions work enough with Tesla to know what they require. What mfgr date is shown on the driver’s front door frame area? Changes sometimes occurred during the year. Ordering and buying a used vehicle unseen is tough. I’ve seen buyers request photos but even then photos aren’t always the best. And what passes as normal wear and tear and clean condition has led to buyer/seller disagreements. What did you ask to see about condition and what was provided? Wind noise is likely a rubber seal issue and an adjustment I would think they would take care of for you as goodcwill gesture. Rubber seals last longer when conditioned. I will say highway road noise is somewhat of a problem with my car. BTW Same is still true when waiting for a new vehicle being sent from the factory and being shipped to that delivery pick up location. My 2018 LR Model 3 was factory new and before signing paperwork we inspected it on the lot. Found a few issues we noted and Tesla did address them to our satisfaction within the first month or two as I recall. Not many service centers back then. But then again this was a new vehicle so not sure how much “work” any manufacturer’s dealership will agree to do on a used vehicle. I would think bald tires would qualify as a safety issue and would be addressed. Would think there would be some specs on what is acceptable. Somewhere among your ordering info I would think you would have a list of features showing what you were buying the car equipped with. Do you have that to compare with your Monroney sticker paperwork? Some of the features of the car you received will be found on the on the car’s and app’s screen, including upgrades. Not all year models came with certain upgrades like speaker system, certain lighting. I hope this can work out favorably for you. Your lender and you committed to a certain set of specs even if a used car. Gather all your info. Stay pleasant during your discussions with them and you’ll likely get further getting issues resolved. Hopefully you can deal with one person to get things resolved. Ask, would make things easier on your end.

Respectfully, I have no clue why you took delivery of this car. You are finding issues with every single inch of a *USED CAR* and now thinking Tesla is attempting to scam you. Who takes delivery of a vehicle with “2 bald tires”, is something wrong with you? So many bad decisions were made here- I would have taken my check back and left. You need to do what you now agreed to, which is take it in and have it looked at.

Which_Net4076 2026-01-02 00:21

Have to second this. Regardless of the discussion, you still proceeded, and now are on the asking side of getting these things addressed, rather than the “or else I’m walking” side.

Adventurous-Cup-1958 2026-01-02 03:28

Read the post again. The delivery advisor said that a request would be put in to get the tires replaced and the door panels looked at after delivery when the sales and service department was open. I did not find the other issues until after delivery since Tesla does not allow test drives of used vehicles

Adventurous-Cup-1958 2026-01-02 03:39

There was no”or else I’m walking”. The deposit was non refundable so I had to either forfeit my $1000 deposit or take delivery. Non negotiable according to my advisor.

rwhe83 2026-01-02 03:50

I read your post, it’s ENORMOUS. To be completely honest, some of the complaints look like you just trying to find issues. I still have no clue why you didn’t rip the check back from them and just leave. You are not obligated to take delivery of a car, no matter what an advisor says.

Adventurous-Cup-1958 2026-01-02 04:37

Please enlighten me to what complaints are “just trying to find issues.” I have not complained about anything that isn’t a build issue, Tesla policy that was not upheld, or a violation of my order agreement in what was allowed to pass through the used vehicle inspection. The issues I found during my inspection were promised to be looked into by service at a later date. Missing features and other issues were found later during the drive home when it’s too late to do anything about it. Turning around and driving back was not an option since there wouldn’t be anyone in the showroom by the time I got there. Tesla doesn’t allow you to just pass on a car since the order deposit is non refundable, as stated in the used car order agreement. My advisor told me I either take delivery that night or I forfeit my deposit. If that’s not the case then I was lied to. There was no body there from the sales team to confirm or deny that statement since it was after 7:00pm on New Year’s Eve. No one to talk to, everything is closed, I’m over 2 hrs away from home, my trade in car had an almost empty battery from the drive up there, I’m frustrated, so I had to make a decision. Either forfeit $1000 and start over at a different dealer, or take delivery of a car that had issues that would be remedied free of charge. Seemed like an easy decision.

rwhe83 2026-01-02 04:38

My god, I’m not even reading yet another enormous post. Breathe and follow up with Tesla. You are stuck at this point.

rayapple 2026-01-02 06:58

I agree, also another thing to note, this doesn’t affect you but is something I personally noticed, my 2018 model 3s sound system is noticeably better than the newer model 3s, I had a 2021 loaner and I’ll be honest I’ll be lying if I say I wasn’t disappointed. It wasn’t bad, but the thump and the overall clarity just didn’t hit the same something felt processed about it. It still sounded great, just nowhere near as good as the 2018. I really hope they can fix it all up for you!!
