Trunk actuator misaligned on closure.

jollyfantastico | 2025-12-31 17:45 | 53 views

Before I start taking things apart, does anyone have experience with this. Is it a DIY fix or a service center type of thing. Happened last night when it tried to close.

Is there something stuck in between?

The hinge is bent and needs replacing. Happens when people jork on it to rush the closing. It’s a pain to replace, and if you’re not careful you can smack the tailgate into the top glass, lol.

There’s a diy YouTube on this, but mine wasn’t nearly as misaligned.

Ah well dang

It’s easy to align, 13mm wrench, loosen the nuts a bit, and align it. The tricky side: why it happened? In my case the power strut started malfunctioning and after 3 months died.

It’s an easy fix. Like someone else said, grab a 13mm. You may be able to see where it was originally and simply move it back to that spot. Otherwise, you know which way it needs to move. Loosen the nuts, move it conservatively that direction, tighten, check, re-adjust as neccessary. Edit:a word

Could also be the power strut that’s broken, but that thing is connected behind the headliner, lots of clips to break.

I doubt it’s bent. Try adjusting.

Mine wasn't quite this bad but not far off, used from Tesla like that. I just pushed it down and it's just above even now. Also adjusting the stoppers will help it

Appreciate it! Worked like a charm!

FMLkoifish 2025-12-31 20:11

Okay, I have a similar issue - but it was from me pushing up the trunk out of frustration. I thought I may have bent the hinges

jollyfantastico 2025-12-31 20:25

I did that too. This seem to have worked tho

FMLkoifish 2025-12-31 20:44

I’m glad I saw your post, I first replaced the automatic strut what’s did not fix it and I’ve been delaying a Tesla appointment to replace the hinge. Maybe I’ll give this a try too. Can you send a pic of which part you adjusted?

Ty for the comment, will store this knowledge in case I ever need it, which appears likely.

Zach__Chad 2026-01-01 00:52

I just took deliver of my 23 M3P this morning and it has this same issue. Crazy how this passes their 102 point inspection. Had to schedule service for it.

FMLkoifish 2026-01-01 01:08

I appreciate this, thank you. Happy new year! Also, about the trunk alignment, does your mechanic strut wobble (in a circular motion) when it goes open and close? That’s what mine does

Far-News9070 2026-01-01 02:44

Noticed this with a fellow Tesla owner that lives in my apartment complex. Don't have any advice, but hope it's an easy fix!

FMLkoifish 2026-01-02 00:32

Just want to say thanks! This fixed my issue as well, cancelling my Tesla service appointment

Capital-Ladder-1313 2026-01-02 09:41

Mine is doing all of this, wobble too. I was able to adjust it so there's no gap, but the strut seems too far to the right. When closed the strut actually moves the rubber seal down, so the trunk has been getting a lot of this LA rain lately. Trunk also won't stay fully up most of the time. At home it'll open fully and then lower enough to bump my head when I reach in. All of this also happened after pushing the trunk up out of frustration.

ConvexPotato 2026-01-02 19:40

I had the same issue as OP. Thanks for the info. You gave me the little push to see if I could make the adjustment. Took me all of 3 minutes and it looks great again.

Delcasa 2026-01-03 03:30

Looks exactly like mine after a frustraed angry-close on my part.... So happy it seems to be fixable and not an expensive fix. Ill use that money on anger management sessions instead

Sarkia 2026-01-03 20:34

mine wobbles around in a circular motion. it seems to be fine though?

FMLkoifish 2026-01-03 20:38

Mine does too now after my little mishap
