Model 3 reverse sound

Unrelated but I’ve seen so many dealers selling Junipers lightly used for the same price as new ones

I agree that highland reverse sound is 30-50% lower than what older model 3 was, and it’s not just the insulation. I’ve rolled down windows to listen as well. It’s just much lower which is nice to not to have to announce to the entire neighborhood that I’m late for work.

Also noticed the same thing compared to my previous 21 M3. Its significantly quieter

I wish I could just turn the damn noise off.

Is this a region thing? I dont think my 21 plate 3 (UK) makes any sound when reversing.

That’s not a bad thing. I think the horn on the Juniper Ys sounds much lower than older models, which is a safety issue. It’s almost like they’ve eliminated the real horn and play that sound through the speaker. That to me is noteworthy. The rear sound being lower is not a big deal. People can still hear you reversing.

My September 2019 Model 3 had it. I watched a video then unplugged the speaker that’s inside the front passenger side wheel well.

The pedestrians around you are glad you can’t

Tell that to Tesla who won’t retrofit my 2018

No other car has to have a reverse alarm! It’s a dumb requirement

I guess I never thought about it but I do remember now that this comes up that my 2019 was much louder than my 2025. I used to not back into the driveway when it was late at night and that's not an issue anymore.

Pretty sure you can unplug the PWS speaker without much effect on anything else…you will lose the boombox option though. My 2019 was manufactured in 07/19 and has all the wiring and connections for the PWS, Tesla just never installed the speaker. One day (being bored and kicking around the garage) I took the speaker out of our 2021 M3 and plugged it into my 2019. The PWS worked immediately. I would need to request an update from Tesla to have the boombox feature added. The only error I got on the 2021 was when I went into the boombox app (told me this feature is unavailable). I then swapped the speaker back and everything is the way it was originally. The PWS speaker is located right behind the passenger wheel well lining and takes about 10 minutes tops to get it in/out.

I don't have any noise on my 3LR when backing up.

Can you create a custom sound, but one where the custom sound is just silence?

Okay, lemme rephrase. All newly sold electric vehicles were mandated to have an outward facing Pedestrian Warning System speaker by September 2020. Similar to how by May 1st 2018, all new vehicles under 10,000lbs were required to have standard backup cameras

I’m aware of how the law works. I was being facetious as true safety mandates should require retrofits when plausible.

I was wondering the same. I came from a ‘22 M3LR and it was much louder compared to my ‘25 M3P. My wife has a ‘25 MY and you can hear the audible difference. I’m just glad to know it’s not just my car. lol. 😂

I have a Model 3 Highland. The same as the sound varies with different updates. Sometimes it's quieter. Sometimes it's louder.

Why do you think it’s dumb? Where I’m from all new hybrids have to have the reverse / low speed sound and they are in the process of making it mandatory for EVs too.

Dumb was probably a bit too aggressive. I think it’s unnecessary. Internal combustion engine vehicles don’t have backup alarms.

Because you can hear the engine. Personally I think it’s good, having a 2 tonne vehicle that can move dead silent doesn’t seem safe for anyone. But fair enough if you don’t agree.

I disagree. You can hear the wheels on the pavement when moving at any speed that could be dangerous, they're not completely silent. And engines can be pretty quiet these days.

Not for the backup noise.

It must be sold with the backup sound but in my state yearly inspections do not require it to be operational. Cutting the wires is the only way I know to disable.

How about people driving without phones next to the steering wheels and pedestrians not walking into the street with their heads looking down at their phones?

That’s an issue too, I agree. But what can we do about that? People will do what they want, as evidenced by some of the comments in this thread about people u plugging their speakers.

It’s not just about dangerous speeds though - even if a car is crawling or reversing I still think people deserve to know where it is or where it’s coming from. I’d be pissed off if I were blind and a car going slowly bumped into me. It’s a basic safety feature with no downside really.

Sure but then you lose Boombox functionality, including custom horn sounds and talking thru sentry mode.
