92% battery remaining at 139k miles - 2022 M3 RWD

wesblog | 2025-12-27 13:15 | 181 views

Performed my first battery test and I was surprised at the good results. I bought this abused 2022 M3 with 139k miles at auction for $11k. It had a lot of cosmetic issues that I have fixed up with replacement parts. Now it looks like a great car! And the battery is still strong, which is surprising since it sat at 0% charge in an auction yard for several months.

It’s probably LFP, very typical aging curve for LFP Chemistry when not charged full often or exposed to stress. My LFP M3 had 96% Capacity at 50k miles over 4 years. Only charged to 80%. And 95% for trips.

Lookin clean! Great job on the restoration! Any before pics you’d like to share?

Thanks for the links! I’ll check them out. Happy New Year!

NationalOwl9561 2025-12-27 16:09

Damn. The LR version would be probably mid-80s % at that point. Even 50k miles on a '22 LR is usually upper 80s % battery.

wesblog 2025-12-27 16:40

Yeah. It has the LFP battery pack.

Doppio914 2025-12-27 17:01

How drives in winter

Sea_Amphibian5684 2025-12-27 17:05

Wait, you never charged it to 100% to calibrate it? Like ever? I usually charge mine to 80% but do charge to 100% 1-2 times a month or before a long drive for calibration purposes.

wesblog 2025-12-27 17:42

If it is above 45 degrees it gets full range. Lower than 20 degrees and it loses a lot to heating. It also gets a lot of creaks when turning in sub zero temps. I greased the ball joints but I think it is just a common issue when temps get below zero. It has no noises above 30 degrees.

blvckcard 2025-12-27 17:42

No never, the Battery test was actually the first time and it actually gained a bit of shown range back, so that top and bottom calibration was needed. You will be fine with charging to 100% 1-2 times a month and probably is healthier for the BMS to guess true 0-100%. Just don’t let it sit at 100% for a long time.

Malacasts 2025-12-27 20:16

My 2020 P is like 85% I think at 50k miles, I charge to 95 maybe 5 times a year for a long trip, but usually 80 very rarely super charge.

kjmass1 2025-12-27 20:47

Nice. At 264 at 30k miles.

RandyG93 2025-12-27 20:58

Have the same issues with creaks in freezing temps. Other than that it’s been great. No noises above freezing.

Oseerabo 2025-12-27 22:52

Wow! Mine is 2023 RWD 25k miles and 91% 😬 would have been worried but Nope since I have 75k to go on the warranty anyways!

Sea_Amphibian5684 2025-12-27 23:48

No yeah I don’t let it sit at 100%. Old owner did but nothing I can do about it and I bought the car from a mild climate and it was less than 2 years old. Shows 265 miles at 100% with 26k miles on it. I feel like I need it calibrated because I usually run it down to 4-5% on road trips.

Rare-Network-5111 2025-12-28 01:04

How can u see the SoH in %? I live in germany and mine only says "its in good condition" i had mine at 92% the ladt time i did a check but after one update ut disappeard..

203system 2025-12-28 01:51

My 2022 3P with 83k miles is at 78% percent... Need more LFP

Malacasts 2025-12-28 01:52

The problem is Tesla did a new EPA estimate release secretly in an update. When that rolled out I went from 277 miles full to 260. Now... Is that a battery degradation event or just EPA forcing Tesla?

203system 2025-12-28 01:55

That estimator is pointless anyways tbh. Don’t stress yourself over it.

Malacasts 2025-12-28 01:55

Yeah, I only look at percentages and as long as I can continue my round trip of 200 miles I'm ok.

203system 2025-12-28 01:57

My 3P has probably < 200 miles real world range at max now. I still use 20 inch rim & wider than oem grip tire because honestly if you stress too much it’s perfectly fine. Just more frequent stops for charging but honestly isn’t that bad

fanstoyou 2025-12-28 02:06

You managed your battery poorly - l’m at 57k+ miles, and battery health is 99%

fanstoyou 2025-12-28 02:07

Great

wesblog 2025-12-28 02:10

i think you can only run one test every 6 months.

fanstoyou 2025-12-28 02:18

99% battery health at 57k+ miles March 22 TM3RWD - bought brand new with 7miles. It’s permanently on full charge 100% and I use a heavy duty cable on a simple 16amp (electric cooker) heavy duty plug, at home. It gets to a 100% charge about twice a week as I plug it in every day afterwork. Very rugged car - never fixed anything

blvckcard 2025-12-28 09:04

Well congrats, I believe in these high Capacity regions it is more about calendar aging than degradation based of SOC stress. Or maybe you received a replacement pack?

fanstoyou 2025-12-28 10:57

big apologies for stupidly jumping into saying such negative statement. My circumstance is completely different to yours so, please accept my apology, thanks

JuJuBee- 2025-12-29 01:02

I love stories of smart people. Great job!!! I was lucky to snag a 2023 M3 RWD with 19” sport tires off Tesla with only 12k miles on it. It did cost me $24,800, but when I compared to non-Tesla resale elsewhere it was at least $10-15k more in cost for this low of mileage AND being certified. Other dealers and sellers add a premium price for those two things. I’m so happy Tesla doesn’t play those games. I’m very happy with my deal

JuJuBee- 2025-12-29 01:07

Wow. Fantastic work. It’s so cool that you can do stuff like this. Love that!!!

Better_Peaches666 2025-12-29 06:47

That's awesome. I'm at 84% at 62k miles. IDK what's up with my pack. I do all the right things..... :(

wesblog 2025-12-29 17:28

The LR vehicles have a different batter composition that is more energy dense (longer range) but less durable. Ive heard the degradation slows significantly after a drop of 10-15%

Minnesota_Nice1 2025-12-29 19:06

95% at 5,500 miles with my 2025 Model 3 LR AWD in Florida. Think it’s the LFP battery. I have charged it to 100% maybe 2-3 times (for two road trips and a battery health test), kept it at 80% for the first few months, rarely had it below 20% am never long if so. Hav started keeping it at 50% during the week as I only drive 20 miles to and from work. I use a slow level 2 charger and keep it plugged in whenever it’s not driven. I’ve supercharged lightly three times. Gotta be honest- pretty disappointed by 95%. Car isn’t even year old til late June. I know most aging happens in the first year and this is probably normal, especially for LR, but I was honestly expecting 97% or something.
