Test drove all the trims of the model 3. The performance had me blown away!

Went in to service my model Y and they said it'll take 3 hours and no loaners were available so I figured ill just wait. The service advisor said feel free to demo drive the cars while you wait. I've driven all the other models except the new model 3s. I have a 22Y so the suspension is rough to say nicely. First I drove the RWD model 3 and that felt nice especially the cabin noise and suspension compared to my Y. Suspension was a night and day difference which I didn't expect. However it didn't feel as fun as my dual motor Y. It's no slouch but it was just meh. Next the dual motor model 3. This had that punch I get from my model y. It pulls a little harder likely due to it being less heavy than my Y but it wasn't hugely noticeable. Lastly the new performance. I was really excited for this one because it's supposed be faster than the long range model s at least to 60mph. Interior wise I liked it more than the non performance. The carbon fiber dash was a nice addition and the seats were the biggest improvement. Liked the seats a lot. Also I liked how it was a little lower to the ground so it felt better in the corners. Adaptive dampening was nice and kept the car controlled even if I took some corners a little too fast for comfort. Acceleration I still can't express how fast it was. Insane mode was quite literally insane!! My model Y feels slow which I didn’t think was possible. Tesla has really improved quality and comfort with the highland. Suspension was better on the performance than my car which shocked me on how bad the old suspension really is. Wish I could buy one right now but the Y is just more practical as of now.

I made the mistake of test driving a model 3 performance. I ended up ordering one that same weekend. Could have purchased the rwd single motor, but life is too short. ;)

I’ve had an AWD I got a good deal on (inventory discount + ev tax credit). Got an M3P as a loaner for a week and as much as I enjoy my car, I for sure want to upgrade when the opportunity comes

jaqueh 2025-12-24 06:52

I have a 2022 model y and a 2021 model 3 and the model y suspension is like a Bentley compared to the model 3 which I’ve honestly owned bikes before that are more comfortable.

If you’re coming from a ‘22 MY, why not demo drive the Juniper Ys? Then you can compare apples to apples. I’m coming from a ‘20 M3 LR to ‘26 MY and the suspension indeed is night and day. I don’t think you understand “hard” until you’ve driven the old first gen M3’s with chrome and everything. The MY from that era feels like driving on a cloud. So to my astonishment the suspension did feel quite a bit nicer across Ys and 3s.

It really is. Enjoy!

I keep my RWD model 3 in chill mode and even that can beat pretty much any car in daily traffic. I don’t get what this obsession is with needing to be in a race car 24/7. Handling is way more important than acceleration. Also, fwiw, I’m really unimpressed with the suspension of my highland. I don’t know if it’s because my previous car was a (cheaper) WRX and the engine could distort any small bumps in the road, but bumps are very noticeable in my highland.

Do what I did in my 22, of you have the 980 motor you can add the ghost module, turns your 3/Y into a P+... 3.2 seconds 0-6... here's how to see if you have a 990 (which they sell a boost 50 module for as well),or a 980 - https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1FofFZ4wnE/ https://ingenext.ca/products/ghost-upgrade - you get all the speed and a ton of additional features, for a whole lot less then buying a performance! If you have a 990 motor - https://ingenext.ca/products/boost-50

Suitguy2017 2025-12-24 12:18

WOW did not know this was a thing!? Is you LR now faster than a performance? I wonder if this is going to shorten the life of the motor. I believe the performance has a larger from motor than LR, but somehow this module makes a LR faster than a performance?! EDIT: Do you know if having acceleration boost with the ghost mod makes it even faster? Thanks!

I’ve got 166K miles on my ‘21 M3 LR AWD (purchased Dec 2020). It’s been a great car, but the suspension is beating me up on my 160 mile round trip commute. When it comes time to replace it, trying to decide between ‘26/27 Model 3 premium, Model 3 performance, or Model Y premium. The most important factors for me are ride comfort (suspension and seats), range, and the stereo. I’m thinking Model 3 Premium, but the Y is growing on me — I like entry/exit height, spacious interior, and rear seat room/ride comfort for my tall teenagers. Honestly range is a big factor for me, not when the car is new but when it is five years old, like my current one. With 20% battery capacity loss, and real world efficiency at highway speeds, what will the “real” range be from 80% to 20% at 80 MPH when it’s 5 years old? On my current Model 3, 80=>20 is only ~160 highway miles.

Worried_Produce_1046 2025-12-24 12:24

Nope, the performance has the same 980 motor that the m3lr has, just software unlocked. Since mid 2022 models, tesla switched over to the slower but more stable 990 motors, the 990s can still be unlocked for 50hp more... aka acceleration boost or the boost 50 module ingenext sells.

I’m 20k miles into my 2024 M3P. It’s been AMAZING — not a single problem, still love the acceleration, FSD is terrific, car is just beautiful to look at. Couldn’t be happier. Enjoy! Great choice!

jaqueh 2025-12-24 16:26

Is there a suspension on the 2021 lr? I have one and think they forgot to put one in mine

Acceptable_Main_5911 2025-12-24 16:39

Yeah the 24+ m3ps are absolute units and are in my opinion the best $/aweomeness ratio in new cars out there. I can’t even say hp because it’s ’only’ ~500 but blows away 700hp cars. And it can chauffeur me home at the speed limit.

mayowithchips 2025-12-24 18:59

I just got a brand new RWD and really regret not waiting another two months for the AWD to be delivered. The acceleration does feel a bit meh compared to the G force from AWD :(

DMC_Ryan 2025-12-24 19:08

The suspension is secretly my favorite thing about my M3P, as awesome as the performance is. It rides noticeably better to me than the vanilla Highland (or vanilla Juniper for that matter).

TonyH22_ATX 2025-12-24 19:45

I test drove the Dual motar and then the performance. I just couldn’t shake the feeling of the performance. I ordered it a week later. Zero regrets

Turbulent-Abroad7841 2025-12-24 19:50

If you think the awd has G force the performance will make your head hurt

Seansong82 2025-12-24 21:01

Exact same feeling with my ‘24 M3P as well :-)

scohen158 2025-12-24 21:53

This was me tried the dual motor 3 and Y then tried the Performance I ordered the M3P.

Sevauk 2025-12-24 23:07

New model 3s have better suspensions than your model y

mayowithchips 2025-12-24 23:16

I wouldn’t trust myself in the performance, too much of a danger to myself and everyone else 😂

jaqueh 2025-12-24 23:37

Yeah the 22 model y suspension has nothing wrong though.

SeaDoc 2025-12-25 00:28

You’ll absolutely adore the new Tesla Y performance!!! Tight as a drum. I have both 3P and YP, both hw4… I’ve had the s and x and not even close to my current ones…

gym4c 2025-12-25 01:16

Went to test a LR Model 3, and the service guy said, “want to drive the Performance?” Ordered one within that week

Turbulent-Abroad7841 2025-12-25 01:46

I honestly agree. I might turn into a 18 year old driver who thinks they're Max Verstappen 😂

jchin913 2025-12-25 07:37

Damn I never drove the long range or the RWD of the highland but is the suspension really that big of a difference compared to M3P? What is it that you feel can you describe it? I have the M3P so I don’t know what to compare it to lol

psvase 2025-12-25 07:39

Same here. For my use, the RWD Standard could have done the job for me - then I tried the Performance. Now I’m at the hardest stage- waiting for the delivery.

DMC_Ryan 2025-12-25 16:13

It just feels smoother to me. Admittedly I don’t have any measurements or data to back up my “butt dyno” on this, LOL. The Performance does have a different (better) suspension than the vanilla cars, though. That much, at least, is factual. :-)

-thoth-amon- 2025-12-25 19:29

Love my M3P. Night and day difference compared to my wife's regular M3 highland, but I do prefer those seats for longer road trips.

Zestyclose-Neck-5489 2025-12-25 21:01

Being a lifelong gearhead I bought the M3P and love the 100% torque all the time. However, I think the matte carbon fiber on the dash looks cheap/fake, I think tgey coulda used a higher quality of carbon fiber.

Pale_Candidate_390 2025-12-29 11:51

My 2019 lr with acceleration boost is already fast but I did not test drive performance. I can’t really imaging being faster. I’m already dangerous enough. But that speed is addictive
