Make sure you clean your cameras before and after photos

runningman-18 | 2025-12-22 10:57 | 458 views

2024 m3p already that hazy and would give frequent camera visibility errors and auto wipers constantly trying to wipe.

I’m getting mine cleaned today during a tire repair. How hard is it to do yourself?

Rjeezyx 2025-12-22 11:09

Tis the season for camera errors and auto wipers!

Nicnl 2025-12-22 11:19

Takes likes 10 minutes if you know what you are doing. Takes like 30 minutes if you are unsure and carefull. It's not especially hard. However some connectors (most notably the cabin camera) was very hard to unplug, to the point where I started damaging the connector. I gave up, and cleaned the windshield while the cabin camera was hanging. Not ideal, but workable.

NeighborhoodOdd9584 2025-12-22 11:21

Same issue on my 24 M3P, getting fixed in a week and a half at service center

Successful_man_797 2025-12-22 11:23

I wanted to do it myself, but it sits at a very awkward angle in my Model 3, so it ended up being a 45 minute job at the service center.

runningman-18 2025-12-22 11:27

Not hard at all you just will need a torx10 bit to remove two screws to drop down the camera assembly shroud. The mirror and plastics all come off by hand just push in clips

runningman-18 2025-12-22 11:28

Super easy to do yourself not sure how close your service center is and if you wanna pay for it or not

runningman-18 2025-12-22 11:28

I did it all from the passenger seat

NeighborhoodOdd9584 2025-12-22 11:30

Luckily I’m close to one. It just gets backed up by a few weeks for appointments. If I lived far from one I would probably just try it.

slasher016 2025-12-22 11:33

How much does the service center charge for this?

runningman-18 2025-12-22 11:38

I think $70

Itchy_Platypus4085 2025-12-22 11:40

How much did they charge you?

Itchy_Platypus4085 2025-12-22 11:40

I could've sworn some people were getting their first one free. Maybe when it first became a big issue.

Forsaken_Treacle_407 2025-12-22 11:48

I will always have my windshield tinted as well.

DOUBLE_DOINKED 2025-12-22 11:51

I got mine done for free with a mobile service appointment.

EndNo1553 2025-12-22 11:52

I’ve had to do my ‘24 (September) twice so far. Last week and earlier this year when the issue first started making the rounds.

runningman-18 2025-12-22 11:55

Yeah nearest for me is a hour drive

Dewthedru 2025-12-22 12:06

Thanks!

Working-Active 2025-12-22 12:08

I've never had this happen to my Model 3 that I've had for 6 years now. Do you park outside or is it just cold weather causing this?

Fetty021 2025-12-22 12:10

What products did you use?

runningman-18 2025-12-22 12:13

It is parked outside but I don’t think it’s the weather it was dirty like glass gets overtime

runningman-18 2025-12-22 12:13

Just some glass cleaner and a microfiber towel

Working-Active 2025-12-22 12:20

Ok strange, I'm inside of the city of Barcelona and the air pollution can get pretty bad and I've never seen this problem.

clipse270 2025-12-22 12:22

Are there directions for this

MinerTax_com 2025-12-22 12:27

In that case, I’ll wait closer to 50k warranty to have Tesla fix the little fan noise and clean it too.

wish_you_a_nice_day 2025-12-22 12:30

Tesla needs to make the whole assembly much easier to pop off

Sufficient_Ad3790 2025-12-22 12:46

Is it a big deal not to remove the antenna?

AAlvarez24 2025-12-22 12:47

Genuinely how do you do this? Took it to the service center and begged them to show me how they said no. Wtf you should be able to service your own vehicle

NectarineSoggy728 2025-12-22 12:53

Is there a video that shows how to do it, that you recommend?

BrockLV 2025-12-22 12:53

Just had it cleaned on my '24 Y. It was free and they came to my house, 5 minutes and it was done.

BrockLV 2025-12-22 13:02

The plastic is off-gassing is causing the issue, not the air pollution.

lotrl0tr 2025-12-22 13:03

What about recalibration? Is this cleaning procedure something you find in the service manual?

Successful_man_797 2025-12-22 13:04

$45 CDN

Working-Active 2025-12-22 13:05

Different plastic is used now compared to my 2020 Model 3 that was built in Fremont?

gamerx11 2025-12-22 13:10

My camera gets foggy sometimes. Would cleaning it help?

[deleted] 2025-12-22 13:13

It happens from the off gassing (VOCs) of the materials inside the cabin. During the summer months the off gassing will be stronger due to heat.

[deleted] 2025-12-22 13:14

Yeah you have to have service plus mode to get to the setting to reset it. It’s annoying Tesla didn’t leave the option under the normal service mode.

Dr_Pippin 2025-12-22 13:19

Do you have to do a camera recalibration afterward, or is that all automated now?

BB22DPT 2025-12-22 13:22

That’s stupid. It’s not that hard if you’re familiar with popping off panels and taking things apart. Chris @dirtyTesla on YouTube has a tutorial video that I followed a couple of weeks ago. Also used the Tesla manual but I’m a visual learner. Keep in mind the M3 has screws on the camera housing that the MY doesn’t have. Don’t try to pull it off before removing them.

BB22DPT 2025-12-22 13:23

Yeah. On teslas website and the service manual

BrockLV 2025-12-22 13:29

I don't know. My '22 model 3(freemont) has never had this issue. My '24 model Y was throwing messages about my windshield and constantly wiping my dry windshield until I had a service appointment to clean it. They park right next to each other every day and the model 3 gets used more.

Knightlife71 2025-12-22 13:33

Never had an issue in my 2022 M3LR but happens every 6 months in my 2024 M3P. I thought it was due to tinting my windshield but apparently it’s an issue on most of the new Highland models.

runningman-18 2025-12-22 13:35

You can Google Tesla service manuals and get actual instructions from Tesla or some people post videos on YouTube.

runningman-18 2025-12-22 13:35

No because the camera themself were not touched. Just removed the housing and cleaned the windshield

runningman-18 2025-12-22 13:36

Prob wouldn’t hurt

runningman-18 2025-12-22 13:38

I didn’t have to calibrate anything I didn’t actual remove the cameras. I removed the housing around them cleaned the inside of the glass and put the covers and mirror back. Didn’t actually mess with cameras themselves

WalterWilliams 2025-12-22 13:39

If the little fan noise is the one above the wireless charging pad, you may want to fix that sooner. That fan is to cool the infotainment and should be covered. They changed mine out in about 10 minutes.

runningman-18 2025-12-22 13:43

Gotta be whatever materials they are using on these. Easy job anyhow so it’s whatever

OtisMojo 2025-12-22 13:51

Free on my Y a couple months ago

John-Miami 2025-12-22 13:52

I actually had a pop-up last month in my Tesla app telling me to make an appointment at a service center for a free cleaning for my Sept 2023 Model Y. Not sure if it happens again if there will be a fee though. I never had this happen in my 2018 Model 3 that I had for 5 years.

lotrl0tr 2025-12-22 13:56

If memory serves well there is camera calibration button under the service

lotrl0tr 2025-12-22 14:01

Pretty sure you changed their position, even minimally. You see from the images the camera module is hanging

neutralpoliticsbot 2025-12-22 14:03

Just did it took 10 minutes

neutralpoliticsbot 2025-12-22 14:04

Do it yourself don’t waste time

neutralpoliticsbot 2025-12-22 14:04

No cameras are very solid and don’t move at all that’s not the cameras hanging

neutralpoliticsbot 2025-12-22 14:06

Tesla manual has a detailed explanation

MinerTax_com 2025-12-22 14:07

No there’s a tiny fan to defog the cams I think and whenever it’s on high it generates the noise. Someone told me the blades are slightly dented making noise at fast speed. It stops after a while so not a big deal. I can wait.

neutralpoliticsbot 2025-12-22 14:08

It takes less than 10 minutes just don’t be scared

runningman-18 2025-12-22 14:20

Nope that’s just a shield the camera are still up there secured you can’t see the actual camera in the photo at this angle

Clu_Rebooted 2025-12-22 14:48

Do you smoke or vape in your car?

dmillerksu 2025-12-22 14:52

I got a notification saying to bring mine in for cleaning, but it was free. I’m assuming that’s just because it’s under warranty….? Mine is only a year old. How often are you having to clean yours?

runningman-18 2025-12-22 14:58

First time I did it car is a 2024

runningman-18 2025-12-22 14:58

Nope

CAVU1331 2025-12-22 14:59

Same issue with me. Never had the issue with a 2021 3 and now all the time with a 26 y

Scuffedpixels 2025-12-22 15:03

Mines only about 7 months old and I already had to do this too. Luckily it's not too difficult of a job if you're comfortable tinkering. It got really bad when it went from 50-60°F down to the teens over night.

runningman-18 2025-12-22 15:13

I’m always tinkering lol so no issue there

RussianBotProbably 2025-12-22 15:15

First time is free.

Scuffedpixels 2025-12-22 15:25

This is the way! 🙌

MrPinrel 2025-12-22 15:26

Is it worth trying to do it on a 2018 Model 3? Or is it only the newer cars?

[deleted] 2025-12-22 15:30

That’s not the right one. There is one in service plus that will also record the precision cleaning in the maintenance log.

Theonlyrational 2025-12-22 15:35

It's VOC's coming off of the plastics

Theonlyrational 2025-12-22 15:35

If under warranty first one is free. Mine is out of warranty and Tesla charged me $51 Canadian.

Ok-Stranger-3624 2025-12-22 15:40

How long does this take to do

mhasten96 2025-12-22 15:48

Ah thats why they want $60 to clean them🤣. I thought they just wiped down external surfaces and were off their rocker

RScottyL 2025-12-22 15:52

I need to do that to my 2024 M3P!

runningman-18 2025-12-22 15:52

If the area is hazy I would. You can stand outside the car shine a light over the camera area you can tell if the glass is clear or hazy

runningman-18 2025-12-22 15:53

Eh 15-20 min being overkill over making it perfectly clean. Could def do it in 10

runningman-18 2025-12-22 15:54

lol no that would just be insane haha.

mhasten96 2025-12-22 15:55

Seriously 😂 everything else feels reasonably enough priced and then i saw that

Electronic-Arm-8731 2025-12-22 15:57

[Clean Forward Camera View (Precision Cleaning of Inboard Glass)](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Model3/ServiceManual/2024/en-us/GUID-074F9D27-28DE-40B6-8181-654B0DA3CDE8.html). I can’t fault them for not taking the time to show you but they could’ve pointed you to the online document for the cleaning process.

runningman-18 2025-12-22 15:58

I got tired of the pop up warning and the damn wipers constantly trying to wipe even on sunny days lol

RScottyL 2025-12-22 16:05

Yeah, same reason that I need to do it! Hopefully, after cleaning, it will be awhile before it happens again, since I would assume the plastics won't degas as much!

ScottRoberts79 2025-12-22 16:05

They’re not going to show you how. No auto shop does that. Read the fine service manual. If it’s too complicated let service handle it.

Commercial_F 2025-12-22 16:08

Not paying for this bs that is clearly and manufacturer problem not consumer caused

runningman-18 2025-12-22 16:09

It def works because the wipers haven’t gone once yet and after I did it yesterday I was driving right Into the glaring sun zero complaints from it.

PtrJung 2025-12-22 16:43

My MYP is over 3 years old and I don’t have this issue yet. Are you a smoker?

John-Miami 2025-12-22 16:44

Malacasts 2025-12-22 16:49

Their cheap clips in there are already a problem

runningman-18 2025-12-22 17:11

Nope. But people have said we these new ones they are using different materials that off gas more causing it

fusionvic 2025-12-22 17:14

It's got to be something they changed in the VOC/plastics for Highland. FWIW my 2017 Ford Fusion has a front camera for the lane change system (has its own defroster grid, etc) and its still clean after almost 9 years. Parked outside facing the sun very frequently.

One_Muscle4315 2025-12-22 17:19

How?

silentseraph3 2025-12-22 17:25

Ugh, I have them coming out next Monday. The amount of alerts I’m getting is super annoying.

jayy1989 2025-12-22 17:27

I am taking mine in today and it’s free.

starkiller_bass 2025-12-22 17:31

It's hard to stop caring when the current hw/sw combination bugs me 10x per day about the slight haze on my camera glass

starkiller_bass 2025-12-22 17:31

That's how they get you hooked

RScottyL 2025-12-22 17:34

I meant later down the road, like in a year or 6 months! I hope we don't have to do this too often though!

cavey00 2025-12-22 17:47

The first cover you pop off is the hardest on my car. I destroyed two plastic tools getting that off. Everything else was fine. Had to reattach one of the metal clips for the larger cover. Overall pain in the arse.

quakeroatmeal7 2025-12-22 17:56

I got the free trial and barely used it because the camera needs to be cleaned, however the soonest appointment at a service center isn't until 12/31 lmao. So much for my free trail, because I won't try to use it if the camera visibility isn't up to standards. I won't do it myself just because of the things I've heard about breaking the plastic clips. The interior windshield of my 2024 M3 is the dirtiest windshield I've ever come across. From day one I've had to clean it, unlike any other car I've owned.

Buskey-Lee 2025-12-22 17:59

I just had to do mine after five years, 107.000 miles. Paid the service center to do it. Figured there was a camera alignment necessary. I’d expect this would be worse if the driver was also a lsmoker.

Itchy_Platypus4085 2025-12-22 18:04

Gateway drug 😆

Itchy_Platypus4085 2025-12-22 18:04

Did you need to ask because when I bring it up in the app shows $70.

Itchy_Platypus4085 2025-12-22 18:06

Thanks Russian bot 😆

wish_you_a_nice_day 2025-12-22 18:08

I couldn’t figure out how to unplug the heating element

jayy1989 2025-12-22 18:09

I just submitted a service request and it was $0 estimate. However, it is my first time requesting a cleaning I got my Tesla back in June.

TESMALE 2025-12-22 18:32

OMG, totes. I was getting that visibility message daily. Tesla cleaned it for free.

cavey00 2025-12-22 18:46

Heating element? I feel like you’ve gone too far at that point. I managed to clean the glass without unplugging anything. Probably not great to have the mirror hanging by the wire so next time I’ll unplug that but the plastics are lightweight

runningman-18 2025-12-22 18:54

They are a hour each way for me and if they weren’t going to do it free I wasn’t about to pay lol

runningman-18 2025-12-22 18:55

Non smoker and only a year and a half old !

runningman-18 2025-12-22 18:56

Yup I got annoyed mostly with the damn wipers !

runningman-18 2025-12-22 18:56

How what ?

runningman-18 2025-12-22 18:59

Def materials

cheapdvds 2025-12-22 19:10

I got the same message couple time too on the prior update. But with the newest update, I haven't seen the message yet. One person mentioned his FSD performed worse after they cleaned the camera, so I am hesitant as I don't want the car to function worse after cleaning.

dmillerksu 2025-12-22 19:14

My FSD was failing pretty regularly leading up to getting it cleaned. Hasn’t cut off since

Junior-Ad9300 2025-12-22 19:15

Ugh I vape too so this probably doesn’t help my camera

runningman-18 2025-12-22 19:19

Eh I dunno I don’t smoke or vape yet. Mine was all hazed up like that just from the materials gassing off.

WalkingOnSunshine_ 2025-12-22 20:03

Same here with my ‘23 3 but my wife’s juniper is already getting the off-gassing buildup

JacobMaxx 2025-12-22 20:05

Having this issue now. My MY is 3 years old and having a visibility issue, but the outside is crystal clear ... https://preview.redd.it/7zmtw0m2bt8g1.png?width=1079&format=png&auto=webp&s=9cd623cabc2c142468b7574712f589b352fb1c5e

DigitalJEM 2025-12-22 20:11

You can service your own vehicle but they aren't going to show you because if they do and you break something in the process you could blame them for showing you incorrectly. Then its a he said she said and could become a legal issue. They publish the directions on how to do it, and its written so there is no here say.

Ok-Stranger-3624 2025-12-22 20:19

Not bad

TheKidInBuff 2025-12-22 20:20

Next week I'm taking my 2023 in for my 2nd cleaning in 2.5 years. It's listed as $0 estimate. But I'm also taking it in for an HVAC error that randomly happens and the roof glass that feels and sounds like it leaks air when it's super cold. But I'm worried they are going to charge my for the HVAC and roof seal. Even though its under warranty.

RussianBotProbably 2025-12-22 20:20

Just probably.

AltruisticSetting990 2025-12-22 20:38

This made me laugh. Actually such an easy fix. Checkout a YouTube tutorial. I 100% recommend get some plastic clip pullers at Home Depot or Lowe’s.

MourningMymn 2025-12-22 20:40

why are you begging someone on how to maintain your own vehicle. There is infinite info for free online.

thunderslugging 2025-12-22 20:56

Yep. I broke 2 of the anti glare shield clips. A tiny dot of hot glue fixed it.

njdnjdnjd 2025-12-22 20:56

What did it look like before from the out side? Was it as obvious as it is in this photo?

thunderslugging 2025-12-22 20:56

Youtube has a few videos showing how to remove it.

Malacasts 2025-12-22 20:58

I took mine in for service not too long ago and they tapped the rearview holder and it just fell off, they complimentary installed out a new one in lol

tarahumara 2025-12-22 21:07

Whatever you do, don't touch the black velvety coating.

GrapeUnlucky8203 2025-12-22 21:08

It was relatively easy to access and clean that area in my Model 3 2024. After popping the plastic off, you will have to unscrew a few screws. https://preview.redd.it/vwg6qsb6mt8g1.png?width=1008&format=png&auto=webp&s=c505b935ded3c9959225138a7a053abf05b67181 2024 Model 3

Veearrsix 2025-12-22 21:36

Fucking auto wipers man.

Bigdaddybig456 2025-12-22 21:38

How about they just put a cheap gasket around the enclosure so it doesn’t get the off gas haze!!!

runningman-18 2025-12-22 21:52

Two torx 10 after the plastic

runningman-18 2025-12-22 21:52

Because ?

runningman-18 2025-12-22 21:53

Yeah it was looked about the same e

runningman-18 2025-12-22 21:53

Give it a wipe down !

Knightlife71 2025-12-22 22:17

As long as Tesla does it for free, I’m not messing with it. Their remote service here in north Florida does it in my parking lot at work. Takes them less than 10 minutes.

ZealousidealExam640 2025-12-22 22:23

Hopefully they will make this new patented Micro-Cone Camera Housing with Active Glare Control that they’ve been working on available as a retrofit. hugswithnoconsent 2025-12-22 23:29

They are wipe, fine.

runningman-18 2025-12-22 23:58

Yup lol got lots of those all the time !

ReefKeeper918 2025-12-22 23:59

Tesla has instructions online for taking apart just about anything in the car. Also, YouTube is the best for learning something new. Just YouTube “Tesla camera cleaning.”

mildlypresent 2025-12-23 00:36

I requested this service for the first time recently. Car is still under warranty. Tesla service code of 165 and refused to budge.

mrhimora 2025-12-23 00:56

Just got mine done at Tesla for free last week

Crawdaddy-MktgGenius 2025-12-23 01:06

They just cleaned mine no charge at Tesla SC when my 2021 M3 was there for new 12volt battery. Also no charge; Correction Glare Shield - Front Camera - Remove and Replace. Easy peasy!

j23barb 2025-12-23 01:38

It’s a 2024, just let Tesla do it. Mine took less than an hour and they had an office area for me to get work done while I waited.

JacobMaxx 2025-12-23 01:55

I did so... really well. On the outside 😭 I don't know how to open it like you did. 22MYP

Buskey-Lee 2025-12-23 01:59

Could be the different plastics then I guess.

My 2025 3 has already alerted that it needs this service completed, only had the car since Feb 2025.

ClumpOfCheese 2025-12-23 03:14

I didn’t get many clean the camera warnings, but I could see the haze and would save footage from the camera when I thought haze would be a problem and I could see flashes of light completely block the camera. I cleaned the windshield and it seems like FSD is so much more confident overall and I trust it a lot more. The hardest part is just getting the mirror off and putting it back on.

BlueMista 2025-12-23 04:47

Was that hard to remove

RussianBotProbably 2025-12-23 05:52

Maybe it requires this popup first? Seems odd some people are meeting resistance on this. https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/3327/tesla-now-offers-free-precision-camera-cleaning-via-new-vehicle-alert

Mrwhatsadrone 2025-12-23 06:22

‘18 M3 has this issue. Fremont and it lives nearby

runningman-18 2025-12-23 10:46

No not at all. On a m3 you will need a torx 10 driver

GrandTheftAccts 2025-12-23 13:11

You could just take it in for free since its a free service bulletin that takes 10 minutes...

runningman-18 2025-12-23 14:50

Only took that long in my driveway didn’t have to drive a hour each way to the service center

goodvibezone 2025-12-23 16:08

If it's any consolation, this design "flaw" has existed for many many years. My 2020 needs cleaning at least every couple of months.

thunderslugging 2025-12-23 16:20

It's the cheap plastic Tesla uses. Heat makes it very brittle. I took mines off VERY carefully. Still broke. And yeah, I have worked on all my cars all my life. I know what I'm doing. It's not the user, its the cheap material

SnowMuted5200 2025-12-23 17:27

Yeah I'm not trying that as I'm sure to break the plastic. If they just put quarter turns on it would save a lot of service visits.

mildlypresent 2025-12-23 17:40

Perhaps. In my experience the service centers all vary and there are number of ways the service advisors can "code" things. You might have a guy that knows about this and just codes as warranty, another guy that thinks "cleaning" isn't a warranty issue (my situation). Prices vary a lot too, not sure if that's location specific or also a "coding" issue.

standardphysics 2025-12-23 18:35

Yeah summer heat will definitely accelerate the process, especially if it was garage parked before. Even if your car is a year or two old, the speed depends on temperature, so it can still happen suddenly later in the car's lifecycle. Thankfully, once most of it is out, it's out.

standardphysics 2025-12-23 18:38

They should be offering it free with any service or maintenance now. Probably not a coincidence that this started happening a few months before V14 went wide.

Itchy_Platypus4085 2025-12-23 21:12

Thanks maybe I will try along with my cabin filters.

mLaut007 2025-12-24 01:55

Is the hazy film noticeable before removing the rear view mirror cap? I have a 24m3p also, i get the alerts constantly but it looks clean to the naked eye!

runningman-18 2025-12-24 01:58

Yeah the way you can see it there it was same haze from the outside

VashTheStampede710 2025-12-24 03:08

Do you vape? That’s crazy!! I think I need to do that with mine

runningman-18 2025-12-24 03:25

Nope no vape or smoking

FunctionalBuilds 2025-12-24 14:17

I had to clean mine 2 weeks ago. It was simple but I was worried when I had to apply a lot of force to get the plastic casing off.

AutoPilotNavigator 2025-12-24 16:32

After seeing this photo, I can now understand why my car does some weird things occasionally. Nothing bad or dangerous but the movements now make sense. Going to remove my camera cover and do this cleaning. Thank you!

runningman-18 2025-12-24 17:43

It’s way more confident now than it was prior

jncll 2025-12-24 19:28

Had many “take control” warnings when in the sunlight causes glare. Set up a service appt at no cost for my 2021 M3 DM.

Sir-putin 2025-12-26 02:23

Wait till summer

Rubizo 2025-12-26 06:13

I can’t even use auto wipers anymore, it’s way to obnoxious

mgarciaad 2025-12-26 16:19

Is there an way to know easily if you need to do this. Haven’t noticed the need yet. But perhaps I will.

runningman-18 2025-12-26 17:01

If you get error messages saying camera needs cleaning obviously but also just look at it from the outside if it’s hazy compared to the rest then prob a good idea

mgarciaad 2025-12-26 19:38

Thanks. Hadn’t thought to look or realized it’s a thing. Good to know thanks. Is it something that will inevitably happen?

thunderslugging 2025-12-26 20:14

Lol

Dragonreaper21 2026-02-24 02:35

Are you a vaper, because wtf.

runningman-18 2026-02-24 13:45

Nope just how it got from off gassing of plastics
