HV Battery Pack Dead Again

klmst41 | 2025-12-22 03:25 | 52 views

Well after 6 months with my replacement pack on my 2021 M3P I got the dreaded BMS_a079 error. Kinda disappointed in tesla they said I would have a pack that is like or better and that never happened on the first replacement. The 2nd replacement pack is already in transit. Happy it's under warranty but maybe Tesla should have better replacement packs. It's going to be a long month waiting for this car to get repaired again.

Seems like the 2021 models are notorious for this

klmst41 2025-12-22 03:34

I agree the first replacement pack was a 75 kwh pack also my car originally shipped with the 82kwh pack. I guess Tesla can throw whatever they want in it.

y0Mark 2025-12-22 03:38

I didn’t know the dual motor cars had HV issues for model year 2021. My cousins SR+ battery gave out at 76k miles. The replacement is an LFP battery that he’s hoping will last a while.

klmst41 2025-12-22 03:40

Hopefully it will last. My car has 63000 miles and on its 3rd hv battery 😂

Gloomy_Type3612 2025-12-22 04:04

Any HV battery can have issues...

thunderslugging 2025-12-22 04:24

At least it's under warranty. I would sell that car afterwards and get more money for that year seems yoi can put down it's got a new refurbished pack. I always hear of 2021 models having HV failures

y0Mark 2025-12-22 04:39

I understand that, but 2021 cars are notorious for having a higher failure rate. That’s why I referenced that year specifically

nachos3 2025-12-22 05:17

All 2021 any configuration seems to have the issue except the few that were lfp

Gloomy_Type3612 2025-12-22 05:55

Nearly everything in 2020/2021 has a high failure rate because there was poor quality control due to covid shutdowns. Like, the rate of TVs and electronics made that year breaking are incredibly high compared to the average. It was all junk.

siksik6 2025-12-22 06:21

Well this isn't what I want to read this morning. 60k on my 2021 M3LR, all good so far though 😬

klmst41 2025-12-22 06:22

Hopefully you got better luck than me

stuffedbipolarbear 2025-12-22 07:06

Battery pack lottery!

Aggressive-Guava-596 2025-12-22 09:33

A lot of them seem to fail in that 60k-70k range. Mine failed around 63k. Just enough time for it to fail again, out of warranty!

TripApprehensive7812 2025-12-22 09:59

I’ve seen 21 plate Model 3’s do 230k miles in the UK on the original pack.

[deleted] 2025-12-22 11:41

Any can, but the Tesla one usually has. 2021 packs on Korea have 25-30% failed rate. And TeLa replace HV packs with the same bad packs that just will get you to the warranty limits

THATS_LEGIT_BRO 2025-12-22 13:00

How long does it take to replace the battery pack?

Conscious-Ad9076 2025-12-22 13:47

Got 260k km on my 21 lr everything fine here just like day one, minus some range loss obviously.

woyteck 2025-12-22 15:25

Is it the NMC one?

klmst41 2025-12-22 16:57

A couple of weeks to a month depending when you can get in and the parts arrive

klmst41 2025-12-22 16:58

Yes

N0Xc2j 2025-12-22 18:19

They put you in a loaner car while it’s getting the battery replaced?

klmst41 2025-12-22 18:25

No loaner right now while I'm waiting to get into the sc but yes I will have one when my appointment date comes up. Good thing I have my other vehicle

cantstandthemlms 2025-12-22 22:09

The 2021 model year seemed to have issues with the battery packs.

cantstandthemlms 2025-12-22 22:10

My neighbor had an LFP from 2021 and it had a replacement around 11k miles.

KeonBills 2025-12-23 00:05

Are you getting refurbished ones or new packs? I'd demand a new pack

klmst41 2025-12-23 00:06

It's luck of the draw you can demand but they will send what's available

JtheNinja 2025-12-23 01:36

Generally, packs that fall to the 2021 curse get replaced by refurbs that are cobbled together from other packs that also fell to the 2021 curse. There’s a very good chance another module in these refurbs is also a time bomb. It’s a very shitty situation.

171k on my m3 2018 still chugging along

pyro4447 2025-12-23 20:07

The only way to fight this is to report the issue to the NHSTA, the more people with 2021s that report the issue the quicker they will do something about it

Conscious-Area1523 2025-12-25 15:48

My 2020 m3 is on its 3rd hv pack,2 of the other hv packs failed within 4 weeks of each other 😵‍💫 Hopefully the 3rd pack lasts till the agreement is finished in March 2026 🫣

klmst41 2025-12-25 15:49

Hopefully it does and I hope my replacement pack is my last one also

Conscious-Area1523 2025-12-25 15:51

Yeah fingers crossed for you my first failure was on 62000 miles and the second on 62500 😵‍💫🙄🤨but touch wood 🪵 the 3rd is holding up 👍

klmst41 2025-12-25 15:54

On my estimate from Tesla I think my pack will be new since there is no rmn after the part number. I'm praying I hit the lottery on this one. I will be dropping the car off next week so fingers crossed.

Migko 2025-12-25 21:17

My car is waiting for its second replacement pack. I’m not sure but reading up on it it seems you can’t trust the remanufactured packs at all. Better to give the car away before warranty ends.

ComprehensiveCry567 2026-01-18 13:53

Surely it can't be the battery packs themselves failing this quickly. It must be a combination of something that was installed in the 2021 models...

Powerful-Bet5454 2026-01-20 19:26

Ditto here. First BMS fail was @71,000 miles. Last week it threw the error at 99,250 miles. They said itll be another refurbished, or 'reman pack'. Makes me nervous. But battery packs dont just fall apart overnight. They degrade slowly. So, ill be doing a battery test when i get it back, then at a certain interval, ill do it so I can monitor individual cell resistance. That can give a warning about issues developing. I won't do any more mods on this car because i just dont trust the pack. But ill stay with Tesla because i know its the panasonic packs fro. That era causing the issue. And frankly, they have handled it like pros.

Powerful-Bet5454 2026-01-20 19:57

Yep, I read that these faulty NMC packs are Panasonic built, specifically from 2021, but also some from 2022-23, to a far lesser degree.

AppropriateTip7813 2026-01-26 21:34

Wow that's bad lol How about the range? Did it drop or is it pretty similar to the original one you had?

RealDriver3604 2026-02-20 22:41

62k here. 2022

RealDriver3604 2026-02-20 22:42

I did.. Doesn't seem like people are doing after my review of the reports.

Creative_Top5709 2026-03-10 22:04

I have a 2021 SR+ that made it 26000 miles before the BMS a079 code came up. I signed a waiver from Tesla to install a heavier LFP battery that required stiffer struts.  On a referal, which was rejected by Tesla, my sister bought a 2021 model 3 long range and the same code just popped up at 28,000 miles after she left it parked and plugged in for 7 straight weeks  at 100 % charge. Sounds like a recipe for battery failure, but in any case an out of warranty tesla is a big gamble. Hoping I can get 50% of the cost of mine in resale.
