Plastic film underneath driver’s floor mat

pcPrinceipal | 2025-12-14 20:51 | 21 views

New M3 Highland owner here. Any idea what the plastic film or sheet under the driver’s floor mat is? It looks like it’s been ironed or heat-bonded to the floor, and I’m not sure it can be removed without using a lot of force.

Probably to fix one of the biggest issues in the car: those default Tesla OEM floor mats do not stay in place. If yours stay in place, then it's working.

Soundproofing?

Unfortunately it does not prevent it from moving. In fact, I only recognized the plastic film because the mat slipped. Second biggest issue would be the paint then. Went to the car wash once and already there are fine scratches visible on the paint. Other than that pretty happy with the car

Only on the drive‘s side?

raphaeldaigle 2025-12-14 21:07

Weird, I didn’t have that in my car.

Was it a touch car wash? With all the stuff that whacks every dirty car and then “cleans yours”? Don’t blame the Tesla paint for that, even if it is horridly thin. Blame yourself. Go to r/detailing and you’ll learn some stuff that will keep those fine scratches at bay.

Given that the car has a dedicated “car wash” mode for contact car wash, the paint costs an extra €1,300, and other vehicles in my family with metallic paint have gone through car washes for years without issues, it’s hard to see how this could reasonably be my fault.

It’s just what they ship the cars with for protection…

Papas72lotus 2025-12-14 21:33

lol. Carwash mode. Paint premium is for color. And I really doubt that. Look at it in the sun with a realistic eye. Come on man

A friendly tip: scratches from one instance of touch car was can easily be polished away and will practically disappear even with goof hand waxing as well. Just let that be the last touch wash you go to. Or alternatively take it as some here: it's just a mid-priced car and not a collectible or a supercar and wear from washing is normal.

Just order the weather mats from Amazon

Katmilla 2025-12-14 22:13

Car wash mode doesnt mean you can just go contact wash. It closes certain vents and holes and tightens windows to make sure nothing gets in 🤦‍♂️

Anti-slip

Underwater_Karma 2025-12-14 22:28

It's just the factory carpet protector they tossed the mat on top of It'll peel up

Your Model 3 will be able to go though touch car washes for years for sure. It won't be ruined. The new car shine from the clear coat is definitely going to be impacted. But it's still a great car to drive and looks good with wax on unless you start searching for paint swirls. I'm not recommending this path though. Just saying it exists and there are Tesla owners here who vouch for that approach. "It's just a car."

The manual explicitly mentions “automatic car wash” and “free roll.” I’m not aware of any automatic car washes in my city that are contact-free… As mentioned before, none of the cars we’ve owned have ever had paint issues from contact car washes, so the scratches were unexpected. That’s all I was trying to point out.

I use the car wash mode at the touchless car wash because the water blasts opens up the charging port.

Probably this plastic area will help you to install self-adhesive Velcro tape , in case if you'll have the mentioned below problem : [https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModel3/comments/1mktnvv/my\_simple\_way\_to\_deal\_with\_floor\_mats/](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModel3/comments/1mktnvv/my_simple_way_to_deal_with_floor_mats/)
