Power Frunk install went smooth!

Suvi2k | 2025-12-13 18:36 | 689 views

I really like this mod. It was easy to install on my own and I can finally see myself using the frunk now. I hated having to close it before and getting finger prints everywhere and possibly damaging it.

Congratulations! Looks smooth. Where did you buy it? Share the link

Just-Yogurt-568 2025-12-13 21:53

That’s sick. I’m jealous because I use my frunk so much for my Onewheel. I’ll probably just continue to suffer though tbh.

bobjamesya 2025-12-13 21:56

Yeah which one?

UnderstandingOk5130 2025-12-13 22:06

Link!? Looks nice!

Suvi2k 2025-12-13 22:39

Thanks, I got the kit from Ali express from a seller called vjoycar on Black Friday for around 210$ shipped. It took about 1.5 weeks to arrive. This company seems to have very good products of which I’ve tried so far and lots of good reviews.

Suvi2k 2025-12-13 22:41

Ali express, links unfortunately never work here to their stuff.

UnderstandingOk5130 2025-12-13 22:42

You a W 🙏

Suvi2k 2025-12-13 22:42

It’s really easy to install, I just watched a YouTube install video. I’d say get it if you use the frunk a lot. I didn’t use mine at all until getting this.

FamousStore150 2025-12-13 22:59

Thanks for sharing. You got a great deal because now it’s $306

rwhe83 2025-12-13 23:00

It’s very cool, but is “fingerprints everywhere and possibly damaging it” a bit much?

Suvi2k 2025-12-13 23:01

Yea the seller told me to wait for the sale when I expressed interest and asked a bunch of questions before ordering. It was def way cheaper than local installers near me asking nearly 600$. 🤦

Suvi2k 2025-12-13 23:05

I don’t feel so, Have you heard the loud obnoxious noise it makes when popping open? Also when closing, Tesla expects you to use two hands around the emblem and press down with sturdy equal force “to avoid damaging the hood”. Their words, not mine. This is just much more convenient honestly and something I feel they should have just included from the factory.

rwhe83 2025-12-13 23:07

I’m glad you like it! Personally I’ve had no issues opening and closing my frunk(s) ever. I open it on the app or screen and close it just like Tesla says, I’ve had no problem on either vehicle.

Stampy_bird 2025-12-13 23:08

Dude, what’s the seller’s company name and how much was/is it I see from other comments that it’s from Ali Express and you bought it for $210 but it’s now $306. As a student and avid Frunk user, would you recommend it? Does it break or not work a lot? How’s the alignment?

Suvi2k 2025-12-13 23:13

Yea all good, was worth it to me given I installed it myself and saved some cash. I do hate finger prints though too lol. I usually replace my other car hood setups that come with just a bar to hold the hood up with struts too lol. It was cool that with our first Tesla we had this option to make it fully automated and have added convenience. 👍🏽

Suvi2k 2025-12-13 23:16

My re alignment was perfect. I taped everything off (video on YouTube had this tip) so it was easy to put back and know where to tighten the bolts down. I’ve only used it for day but never had it not work when I used it so far. Time will tell. I would recommend this product and there are a ton of positive reviews for the seller(vjoycar) and product.

Stampy_bird 2025-12-13 23:18

I just saved this comment, thank you man. I’ll write a bot to keep track of his prices and let me know the lowest unless there’s something like Black Friday sales where it’s cheaper

Serious_Meringue6247 2025-12-13 23:49

Amazing

Ooh that's sexy. Maybe I'll work myself up to trying this mod, nice job

Suvi2k 2025-12-13 23:58

It uses all the factory open options (keys, phone app and on screen inside car). Pressing “open” opens it. Once open, pressing the same text indicating it’s open closes it.

Stereo_bfs 2025-12-14 00:06

I ordered automatic door handles from the same shop. Ordered on 06.11 and still didn't get the parcel. But at least they are responsive on Whatsapp..

bphase 2025-12-14 00:12

Probably the same open command. The controller can tell it’s already open and just runs the motor the other way.

bphase 2025-12-14 00:14

That's cool. And wasn't too difficult? How long did it take you to install?  I rarely use frunk as well, no doubt more if it was powered. It's nice not getting your hands dirty and a bit faster too

SnowMuted5200 2025-12-14 00:15

To each their own, only opened mine first day picked it up, and would just as soon not have a motor on the rear trunk like my last one.

ShallotClean7990 2025-12-14 00:15

Painted emblem or rebadged? Looks nice!

FMLkoifish 2025-12-14 00:21

How does it operator natively with the app or is it a 3rd party app used

io775 2025-12-14 00:22

I just had a second lift cylinder go bad on my powered frunk. Cylinder gets stuck mid-way and you can't shut it. First happened at home, so easy to remove while I waited for the replacement. The second one failed why I went to pick up food....all my family was away for the Thanksgiving holiday, so I was stuck with half open frunk. No tools, no one close to come to help me. I went to a smoke shop that was opened and found they had some scrappers/picks kit that I bought and was able to remove the clip from the cylinder and able to close the frunk. Food was cold by the time I was able to drive back home.

thismenu 2025-12-14 00:22

And all you have to do is sell your soul to get one of these. Swastikar.

mogur86 2025-12-14 00:26

My first thoughts too

Substantial_Chain718 2025-12-14 00:30

Looks sweet man!! Every Tesla should come with this from the factory. I never use the frunk because it is such a pain to open and close.

Phonafied 2025-12-14 00:30

This is what I’m afraid of with these powered mods. I keep checking to see if any of them have fail safes where they still allow you to open and close it manually. Not sure if the same issue exists with powered doors and handles otherwise I would’ve gotten those by now too.

noble77 2025-12-14 00:35

I would recommend not getting it. I had a guy come in to my shop becuase his was stuck closed and could not whatsoever get it to release. We needed to basically hawkzal the thing off. It was a real pain be cautious

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 00:48

I was considering those but heard the range isn’t great. Like it auto presents when you are really far away. I wish it was the same range as the factory unlock range but haven’t heard otherwise. Such a functional improvement and I really like it. I also worked with their team members on whatsapp to get help with their products. Seems like the respond in both places. Hope you get your package soon. 👍🏽

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 00:50

Since it was my first time even opening the frunk and removing all the trim pieces, it took me a while because I wanted to be careful. It’s laughable but I probably took around 8 hours lol. I wanted the module secure, wires out of sight and did a test run also so that added to the time. Probably for the people who are used to working on cars, this really wouldn’t take them more than an hour or two.

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 00:51

You don’t like the power trunk either? Wow I absolutely love it and wish my other cars had it.

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 00:52

Thanks, it’s an aftermarket replacement from abstract ocean I believe. It’s good quality from what I could tell.

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 00:53

Natively with key fob, oem Tesla app like shown in the video or on screen controls in the car.

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 00:55

Sorry to hear that happened to you. Hopefully it doesn’t happen to me. There are so many testimonies from many users on Tesla forms that have 3+ years of frequent usage on these kits with 0 issues. They were different brands but reading into those helped me build confidence in my purchase. Hope the quality of this kit is good but from unpacking to install, it already seems to be the case from what I could see.

tubob 2025-12-14 00:58

Looks great! Just an FYI, this mod voids your warranty with Tesla. If you run into any issues in the future remove this before taking it in for service.

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 00:58

Why? Elon didn’t invent Tesla or the tech, he is just the current owner. I don’t think owning anything means you have to love the ceo lol. Maybe you shouldn’t actively participle in a Tesla lounge thread if you don’t like them so much.

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 00:59

I couldn’t agree more and waited months to finally be able to use mine! Thanks 😊

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 01:02

That’s not how the overall car warranty works but yea it’s a given not to take it in for any service related to the hood/latch if that’s what you mean. They can’t deny service for something completely unrelated - we are protected by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act after all though I’ve never once had to consider bringing it up.

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 01:09

This one along with most revised versions do have this feature included. There is a cable routed to the factory spot on the front bumper for turning off the motor and allowing manual opening.

Phonafied 2025-12-14 01:12

Does the motor turn off automatically if there’s a failure or is there a way to turn it off from the Tesla app?

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 01:12

Out of curiosity which brand and version did you get? Also was your strut a 2 piece or 3 piece like in the newer kits?

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 01:14

No way to do it from the app. If it fails, you can just pop the little piece off the front bumper and pull the cord to disable the motor. Takes 10 seconds but hopefully that never needs to happen.

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 01:23

I felt it was pretty easy and I’m not a mechanic but can work my way around cars. On a scale of 1-10, probably like a 3. Just watch YouTube videos and follow the steps slowly. A few basic tools, 3m tape and zip ties are needed also.

whatsasyria 2025-12-14 01:23

The best addon I did to my first model 3. My 2024 is so creepy and build quality is so shit I'll probably get rid of it by end of next year otherwise I would do this again in a heartbeat.

Financial_Table_1848 2025-12-14 01:30

Dude that is smooooth! Been looking for a mod for mine that works this well. Thanks for posting!!

io775 2025-12-14 01:31

I bought from Hansshow in 2021 and installed on my model y. First cylinder went bad a year later and the second just a few weeks ago. Kind of disappointing since I don't use the frunk often, except when picking up food and storing up front so the car doesn't smell. Currently only have one one with the second cylinder disconnect from the frunk lid. The first one going bad gave a sour taste, so I didn't install on my m3 when I got it. Not sure what version but definitely not the newer type.

scarface2887 2025-12-14 01:35

For teslas under warranties I wouldn’t recommend this since it voids the warranty. But I do feel that this is a feature that it should come with

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 01:38

That’s not how the overall car warranty works but yea it’s a given not to take it in for any service related to the hood/latch if that’s what you mean. They can’t deny service for something completely unrelated though - we are protected by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act after all, though I’ve never once had to consider bringing it up.

revolevo 2025-12-14 02:01

Oh wow that’s so nice

WagwanKenobi 2025-12-14 02:06

Did you have to plug something into the data link port thingy (like S3XY mod)?

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 02:07

Nope. It comes with its own module that connects to the struts, power, motor respectfully and finally the integration point would be a piggy back to the plug that goes into the latch. Nothing related to the OBD needed for this.

nomis_nehc 2025-12-14 02:13

I've installed this on the S, old 3, and old Y. All I can say is it's easy when everything is going smooth, but turns into a nightmare when one thing or another is having issue. I've learned my lesson and just wants to pay a pro to do it now, which is what I tell the wife's fam now that they're getting their Teslas.

ciferone 2025-12-14 04:52

Tesla should give us a kit to do this.

Opening_Pizza_9428 2025-12-14 05:07

Pain? Same as Porsche Frunk, and that is there for decades.

SnowMuted5200 2025-12-14 05:14

Understand some people like it, I find it too slow, motor adds weight, and something else to break. And when I wash it, want the lid in-between to clean.

luche 2025-12-14 05:36

Installed the first year owning my 2021 M3LR... hands down the best upgrade ever. I really wanted to use the frunk, but it felt so useless with the manual open/close system. back then, there were a couple kits available, i found a nearby Tesla mechanic that did mods. I looked at doing this myself, but his price was so reasonable that I opted to let him take care of it. Where i'd like to know how it was installed, i'm happy to just have it done. He even offered me another M3 to drive around while i waited, and plugged in my car to his wall connector to charge while working on it. I got to check out some additional mods (3rd party yoke, 3rd party 2nd lcd screen, etc.) on his car. 10/10, will go back to him for future mods.. my frunk still works great, and i've recommended several others to him for powered frunks.

Nearby_Sport_1002 2025-12-14 05:36

Does this void warranty?

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 05:37

Nice to hear, so it’s been 4 years without issues for you? If so, that’s awesome!

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 05:38

Probably for just frunk/latch/hood problems should they arise. Just take it off before going to service if you are worried. Problem solved.

Nearby_Sport_1002 2025-12-14 05:39

Fair enough. Easy fix on that. Same thing I did for my 2 10 inch subs.

theimmc 2025-12-14 05:41

That is a really cool mod. Why does the video looks like it is VHS quality though? With the "PLAY" at the upper right and the static :)

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 05:45

lol some random video filter effect I used. And thanks!

luche 2025-12-14 05:55

zero problems with the equipment itself! there was a time where a Tesla car update broke the "frunk open" functionality altogether for some reason... lasted a month or two. i could still (auto lift) open using the screen within the car... but the app button didn't work for whatever reason. i'd test it periodically, but nothing helped. took a couple firmware updates, but out of the blue it started working again and has been fine ever since. i'll be honest... there seems to be zero reason for Tesla to not provide this as a 1st party option... i'd easily pay several hundred extra to include this. i use either the frunk and trunk toggle feature through the phone app daily.

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 05:58

Ah yes software updates are a potential short term problem. This company seems to have engineers that roll out updates but I’ve noticed it usually happens when the Chinese software updates take place initially. That’s fantastic yours is holding up well. What brand and model did you get?

Substantial_Chain718 2025-12-14 06:05

Yes, it is a pain to use. I am sure if Tesla release numbers for how many people open their frunk it would be extremely low.

MountainManGuy 2025-12-14 06:29

What subs and amp are you running?

Old-Tour5654 2025-12-14 08:24

How does this work? The tesla app and display only have a button to open it, not for closing it. Is it just you push the open button again and it closes?

dualcyclone 2025-12-14 08:38

I owned a 2019 Model 3 from new, and within a few months I bought a powered lift gate mod for my trunk. Tesla should offer this as a mod themselves, because what ended up happening to mine was the worst experience. The locking mechanism failed when it somehow pulled the lock cable out of the lock... Ended costing way more to remove than it cost to buy. I'd say if you own one of these, and based on my experience, you need to constantly check everything is working OK, and don't be surprised if Tesla start voiding warranty on stuff around this area because of this mod.

thunderslugging 2025-12-14 09:57

Does this void the warranty?

thunderslugging 2025-12-14 10:15

How much are the cylinders if you have to replace them?

thunderslugging 2025-12-14 10:16

This scary.

Papas72lotus 2025-12-14 11:15

Seems it. Just takes the second open command and interprets it as close if it knows it’s in the open position. Not a hard concept

tightcall 2025-12-14 11:59

2 weeks ago was the aliexpress black Friday special, some products were 50% off, got some stuff that now is almost double.

Nearby_Sport_1002 2025-12-14 12:46

Salt 6 amplifier with the two “M-10 D2” and a custom acrylic box made by my big brother, he’s been doing this for a while. So all I had to pay for was the material, he does the rest.

Nearby_Sport_1002 2025-12-14 12:48

Sadly, it was on my old Tesla. 2019 M3, so whoever has my car. You’re a lucky dog. 😂 Got a killer setup. I wasn’t gonna do it to my brand new 2025 until maybe after warranty is out. Perhaps. I wanna take good care of this one as much as I can.

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 15:42

Did you possibly install the locking cable below the factory spring as intended or above it? Also ensure the cable is above the trigger pins and not in between them. I learned from watching install videos, that’s the only way the issue you’re describing happens and something people often overlook. I was careful when testing to even include a small rope on the latch when closing incase I messed something up, I recommend doing that once too and learning how the mechanism works. 👍🏽

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 15:44

Probably for the hood/latch but this can easily be removed if you face any problems before bringing for service. No one would ever know.

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 15:44

Yes or using the in car display the same way. Or if you have a physical key fob, it also operates the same way.

MountainManGuy 2025-12-14 16:34

Thanks man, much appreciated! And you had quite the spicy little setup yourself! I wasn't expecting you to come back with that, no offense haha. That setup is no joke! Props to you and your bro for putting that in to one of these cars. I know just how involved that is. Can't wait to see what you do with your '25 when you decide to put another one in! It's only a matter of time. I always tell myself, not this time, not this car, and the I get the craving for more bass and go and put a big system in 😂

Nearby_Sport_1002 2025-12-14 16:52

I know it. That’s why I’m working on a project car right now. It’s a 2002 PT Cruiser. I’m gonna be putting a super charger in it. And see how that goes with 2 15’s. Honestly for a gag. No one would be expecting that. Not sure what to wrap it though? Or just paint?

[deleted] 2025-12-14 17:11

Ich wäre froh wenn die dreckskarre endlich leise im Innenraum wäre. 8Service in 12 Monaten und 20k im Jahr.

Ok-Stranger-3624 2025-12-14 17:13

I want this but heard so many issues down the road with it

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 17:17

Lots of good reviews and positive feedback from many also with reports of no issues over 3+ years, so lm optimistic and confident. Will certainly share and report back if I ever run into anything major though down the line.

MountainManGuy 2025-12-14 18:07

Haha I certainly wouldn't expect that. What a sleeper build! I'd probably do a wrap personally, but I've not had it done before or attempted to do it myself. 2 15s is gonna absolutely slam in that thing though. Looking forward to what you come up with

io775 2025-12-14 18:57

I didn't pay for the first one..hansshow actually sent a replacement one. I'm not sure if I will get a replacement or just re-install the original oem cylinder.

mmyers300 2025-12-14 18:59

Me too , never too late.

Sweatpantzzzz 2025-12-14 22:05

That’s pretty cool. Was it hard to install

Luther_Burbank 2025-12-14 22:08

I’ve had mine for 4 years without issue. But I can tell the manual release cable is likely seized up. I tried pulling it once and there was no way it would budge.

Suvi2k 2025-12-14 22:10

3/10 difficulty imo. Just used YouTube university

InterstellarChange 2025-12-15 00:48

At least it didn't release the hood while driving and smash the windshield. If you search you can find these happen with powered frunks too.

DeepLogicNinja 2025-12-15 03:02

This should be standard. Especially on Plaid and CyberTruck

m1keyc 2025-12-15 15:24

Does the car detect that it is closed after you close it?

MourningMymn 2025-12-15 15:45

I can't say I've ever used the frunk. Well, no I actually used it once, threw my coat in it last winter and it stayed there an entire year lol.

Suvi2k 2025-12-15 17:33

Yes

Electronic-Juice-359 2025-12-15 18:20

Will this void the warranty?

G_Dubb 2025-12-15 23:54

NoIAmBard 2025-12-16 03:37

will it stop if there is an obstruction e.g. a finger?

starfoxinstinct 2025-12-16 03:44

Make sure your aftermarket mods have adequate safety precautions. [https://imgur.com/a/yJw4Csc](https://imgur.com/a/yJw4Csc)

Suvi2k 2025-12-16 03:49

This anti pinch feature is mentioned on the listing but during my real world testing it only works when the motor is off and the latch isn’t engaged. I would never try with my finger after trying some other random stuff and watching it close on them even briefly before moving back up. It’s not really a big deal as the whole point of using this is to avoid touching the hood. I would recommend letting anyone who will be using the car, about this however.

Suvi2k 2025-12-16 03:52

The anti pinch feature is included with this kit but I wouldn’t intentionally try to use it. I really should never have reason to ever stick my fingers in between the hood just before it closes with an automated power frunk but I’m glad it’s got some form of protection. I’ve not done tried with the one auto trunk either. 🤷

NoIAmBard 2025-12-16 03:55

Thanks. Sometimes the kids are a little fast so cautious of them putting their hands around.

EgoCaballus 2025-12-16 17:32

I always wondered how the car knows it can close the Frunk. I was not aware this is a factory option with the software.

Suvi2k 2025-12-16 17:34

Aftermarket, but works with factory controls in a smart way. Most people want Tesla to just offer this functionality exactly as it works here though. 👍🏽

EgoCaballus 2025-12-16 17:59

Oh now I see it. My brain saw the open command as "close" in the video.

Standard-Bumblebee64 2025-12-17 08:34

Ok but why isn’t this *standard* tho?

jawg201 2025-12-17 14:47

I need this

Suvi2k 2025-12-17 14:48

Should be imo

mayowithchips 2025-12-18 19:27

Yep, I would love this in an updated model in the future

mofofofoo 2025-12-25 07:07

can you still manually close the frunk? i’m just worried if a tesla tech is unaware of the powered frunk and tries to force it closed manually, would that mess up the powered struts?

Suvi2k 2025-12-25 16:29

You have to use power to close. And you can let them know in advance.

NoCow9380 2025-12-29 20:57

How does the Tesla App update for the Fronk?

ZealousidealDraw4075 2026-01-07 15:02

How does the app know you have it and it should close when you press again?

Suvi2k 2026-01-07 15:05

The oem button function always triggers an action/signal to open whether it’s open or closed. The aftermarket module just translates that to trigger open or close on the power frunk. App doesn’t know but it’s simple logic and works.

ZealousidealDraw4075 2026-01-08 07:52

Awesome, that was the main reason I didn't got one because I didn't want a separate remote or not fully working app

Suvi2k 2026-01-08 23:43

Works perfectly like it should with all oem accessories, FYI. Just like the trunk does.

I actually just removed mine. My new to me 2018 M3 came with a third party power trunk. It started opening completely at random. At first I assumed I was accidentally triggering it through the app since I’m new to the Tesla ecosystem but after finding the trunk wide open in multiple parking lots, it was clear something else was going on. I checked for signs of a break in, nothing. Then I learned power trunks weren’t a factory feature in 2018. To test it, I parked at home, powered off my phone, kept all keys away from the car, and left it alone. A few hours later, the trunk was wide open again. The install was out of warranty and too far to drive to for them to troubleshoot so I removed the entire system and replaced it with stock struts. It required pulling a ton of trim to get all the wiring out, but honestly, I don’t miss it. Even if it could be repaired, that kind of failure mode isn’t something I’d ever trust. Hopefully you have better luck with your kit.

That sounds like quite an ordeal you went through and reason to remove it right away. Can’t speak for a 2018 M3 but removing the trim to access the latch in a highland is extremely simple and fast even for beginners. I hope future updates tesla pushes don’t impact functionality negatively. It hasn’t been the case based on many reviewers of this kit particularly and the company does support updates proactively from what i could tell. Honestly I suspect there was a mechanical or electrical hardware related issue based on the behavior from your experience. I agree with you about/and can’t imagine Tesla sending signals to open the frunk at random times. It does sound like it’s related to the aftermarket kit you had but I don’t think it was a firmware/program issue either. All the software really does is trigger the power open or close based on if an OEM signal is sent to open it and I don’t think tesla has changed the functionality for while or intends to but I could be wrong also. I use my frunk more often now in the little time I’ve owned it. The frunk is great for stopping food odors and personally, it’s genuinely been more convenient using the power frunk vs manually closing the lid with force.

I think you’re right, the trunk has worked normally since I removed the kit last week. The installation quality was poor. The cables were routed with sharp 180 degree bends over exposed sheet metal under the weather seals, so an intermittent short seems likely. The kit tapped into the stock control signal harness under the parcel tray cover trim behind the rear seat which is a PIA to remove and drew power from a connector beneath the rear seats. Once everything was apart, the car looked like it was mid assembly, which definitely freaked out my wife 😆. One tip: on my car, the kits control box was mounted in the right rear wheel well behind the subwoofer, an area vented directly to the outside. Several connector pins on the control box were visibly corroded, which likely contributed to the failures. If possible, mount the control box inside the frunk or cabin to reduce exposure to humidity and prevent corrosion.

Most certainly good advice 👍🏽and I did use my inner frunk passenger side to mount mine using zip ties, and vhb. The kit I chose has a high water resistance rating in this latest version release. I still used electrical tape to further protect the individual cable leads/connectors though. My car doesn’t even see rain but it’s better to be safe and organized now!

Can you send a link of which one you use? Worth it still?

Suvi2k 2026-01-13 18:50

Sadly ali express links do not work on this forum. I’ve tried a couple times and it fails. It’s called a power frunk and the seller is Vjoycar. I use it more than the trunk at this point and find value from it personally.

Awesome, I think I’m gonna pull the trigger. Any YouTube video you follow to do this?

Suvi2k 2026-01-13 19:13

This one is good. https://youtu.be/FLbm3-by2T8?si=mhseSvXHiHt75uIQ

Thank you!! Also, does it feel OEM?

Suvi2k 2026-01-13 19:23

Absolutely. It’s better than manual opening.

Awesome, purchased. Ended up being $280, you got it for a steal of a price

Awesome, good luck with the install. Don’t get discouraged if your trunk doesn’t line it perfectly at first. Play with the latch placement as long as needed until it does. The tape method and physically aligning with marking really helped me. Just a tip
