FSD pot hole avoidance

rawtank | 2025-12-13 18:24 | 28 views

What happened to pothole avoidance? My car just got absolutely blown up by a pothole going 30. This is why I don’t pay for beta FSD. Love the direction it’s going but you won’t catch me dead paying to let Tesla use my car as a pothole tester.

Never really had pot hole avoidance. It’s supervised for a reason. Also blame the the city for shit roads

steebulee 2025-12-13 18:31

TIL OP never hit a pothole on his own

rawtank 2025-12-13 18:31

I’m pretty sure they had it in the release notes but I could be wrong. Either way, a sentient car should be able to detect obvious flaws in the road.

e7ang 2025-12-13 18:38

It’s called supervised for a reason.

Fantastic-Army-7671 2025-12-13 18:40

Not sure sentient is the right word to describe it

rawtank 2025-12-13 18:40

So this is what we’re gonna do now

snarkymcfarkle 2025-12-13 18:40

I wish everyone wasn't such a Tesla apologist... Pothole avoidance is an essential component of any self driving system.  It is glaringly omitted in the current iteration of FSD, and may not even be feasible with current hardware.  It's a discussion point, not something we should “blame the city” for.

rawtank 2025-12-13 18:42

According to Elon, the next release is supposed to be sentient. Now, you can blindly defend FSD and everything they release, or you agree there are issues that need to be worked out, but you can’t have it both ways.

rawtank 2025-12-13 18:44

Thank you good person, someone who actually uses their brain before posting.

Fantastic-Army-7671 2025-12-13 18:44

So you don’t care that the city allows roads to be in shambles ruining any car that drives over them costing you more money in repairs? I get OPs point

Fantastic-Army-7671 2025-12-13 18:45

I get it, but Elon says a lot of stuff and as much as I want it to be true it’s likely not. I agree potholes needs to be avoided but at its current state it’s not and still needs to be supervised.

e7ang 2025-12-13 18:48

If you pay attention to the road this doesn’t happen. Y’all act like Teslas are doing something normal. FSD is not normal. Don’t take for granted just how cutting edge FSD is.

theOnlyDaive 2025-12-13 18:58

Mine does great avoiding them 95% of the time

tacobell_shitstain 2025-12-13 19:06

Two parties can suck at the same time. Not everything has to be absolutist bullshit.

amhudson02 2025-12-13 19:13

I just ignore everything that comes out of his mouth..or tweets. It will"feel" sentient, is what I believe he said, which in many ways it does feel that way now. There are many flaws, though, and we are supervising for a reason. Just keep in mind that human drivers wreck their tires on pot holes every day as well. Be ready and attentive, and you can avoid them if FSD doesn't see them. It's all about progression and moving this technology forward.

Mmm_bloodfarts 2025-12-13 19:34

Always read the manual, not the marketing

NotAnAIOrAmI 2025-12-13 19:46

The defense of shitty FSD in these subs is amazing, it's like Stockholm Syndrome.

Seansong82 2025-12-13 19:48

If it can’t see a pothole it won’t dodge a pothole. Mine dodges potholes when it “sees” them.

rworne 2025-12-13 19:49

[Sirius Cybernetics - "Your Plastic Pal Who's Fun to Be With..."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDaFqgPKklI) Would beg to differ. I seriously debated naming my Model Y "Marvin", but it just didn't fit...

rawtank 2025-12-13 19:51

I think you all missed my main point which was that I think they’re doing amazing things and the tech is very close, I just won’t be paying to be a tester for this reason and many more regressions and quirks. See ya’ll at unsupervised.

rawtank 2025-12-13 19:52

Well said.

rawtank 2025-12-13 19:54

Ya, I shoulda known better than to critique the all mighty Tesla and FSD, but figured I’d throw my hat in the ring.

rawtank 2025-12-13 19:55

Lucky you, I haven’t seen it avoid a single one. Now, it’s done many other impressive things in the latest release, it’s just these edge cases that become dealbreakers to me subscribing.

TheNore 2025-12-13 19:58

Just posted about this yesterday. I'm in the same boat. $860 quote from Tesla. Going 75 mph in the dark, pothole on the highway.  [Posted Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModel3/s/m9VreohRLf)

Pliskin01 2025-12-13 20:07

What do you mean what happened to it? Did Tesla ever advertise that FSD could detect and avoid potholes? I can’t find a single source saying that was/is a specific feature on the 3. Sucks that happened to you, but it is called beta/supervised for reasons like this. I won’t use/pay for it until they take responsibility for its function and safety. Until then, Tesla are basically telling you they aren’t confident enough in it to risk their own money. Why should you trust that with your life?

bsears95 2025-12-13 21:10

V14.1 was the first time pothole avoidance actually seemed to be a thing. Unfortunately, there was a lot of unneeded avoidances (like with leaves or tire marks on the road) and they tuned it back on V14.2, which looks to be an over correction.

Drcashman 2025-12-13 21:12

Version 14.1.4 had very good pothole avoidance at least in my testing. Issue was it was very sensitive and had more swerving and some were complaining.

phobos_664 2025-12-13 21:45

In my experience 13 had absolutely zero pothole avoidance. Speed bumps that were clearly marked yellow it would slow down but otherwise it wouldn't. Since 14 it has some pothole avoidance, granted sometimes even I don't see them because of rain or poor lightning, so I don't blame the car for missing those. It also avoids manholes and big water puddles which is nice. The car slows down at every speedbump nos regardless if its painted or not, which is quite impressive.

troidem 2025-12-13 22:44

I hate when it doesn't avoid manholes..

Kilo_Juliett 2025-12-13 23:24

Everything about 14.2 seems to be an overcorrection. It almost feels like it's actually an older build than the 14.1 they gave us. I don't feel like there are any actual improvements over 14.1, just regressions. The only thing I like about 14.2 is it tracks how many of your miles are driven using FSD. That's it.

bsears95 2025-12-13 23:54

It's definitely much smoother w.r.t. brake stabbing and steering wheel wiggles, but definitely needs improvement

Malacasts 2025-12-14 02:27

Performance owner here, I've memorized every pothole in a 20 mile radius of my house 🤪 I won't let FSD drive me around them.

rawtank 2025-12-14 02:44

I’m pretty much the same but this was a brand new one on a stretch I drive regularly. Why I took my eyes off for 2 seconds to change a song, oh well.

rawtank 2025-12-14 02:45

Same

rawtank 2025-12-14 02:46

Damn, that’s rough. Funny how your post was received much differently than this one 🤔

sailirish7 2025-12-14 04:58

> I wish everyone wasn't such a Tesla apologist... and I wish people would stop expecting unicorn farts from an unfinished product. We don't always get what we want.

TheNore 2025-12-14 05:51

It was the way I worded it 😏

gym4c 2025-12-14 06:04

If you didn’t tell me it had pothole avoidance, I would have never known. Seems to “just keep swimming” forward, pothole or not.

rawtank 2025-12-14 16:06

Lol

zanzabar630 2025-12-14 23:22

I have gotten two flat tires simultaneously while using FSD. Real pain.

rawtank 2025-12-15 14:58

Ouch. I just go back to, I’m not going to pay to let my car be a guinea pig for FSD. I love the tech, I love trying it out during free trials, but each time I’m reminded why I would never pay to add that amount of risk. If it was free or much cheaper, I’d willing to try it much more. Until then it’s trials only.

uyuyuiyuyui 2025-12-15 19:55

It doesn't. it's all anecdotal BS.

dsx724 2025-12-17 20:02

14.1 was really good. A few shadow dodges but it was very sure driving. 14.2 is a mess of hessitation.

dsx724 2025-12-17 20:08

It is cutting edge tech that has no alternatives. Even the leading edge Huawei stack feels legacy by comparison. If FSD is so shitty, give us something better. Otherwise you are just a critic and Roosevelt's quote applies.

OldFargoan 2025-12-20 11:15

So do you not have FSD, or just not pay for it? I don't get it.

rawtank 2025-12-20 16:23

Time to put on that thinking cap, you can do it!

OldFargoan 2025-12-20 19:26

You have too much faith in me! ;-)

rawtank 2025-12-20 21:56

Lol. So yeah I’m using the trial right now. Huge fan of FSD in general, wish I could afford it and not worry about if it’s a good purchase or not, but $100/mo is still not worth it to me for how many little things they still need to iron out. If they made it free I’d be all over it, but it’s not and that’s why I’m annoyed with their approach.

OldFargoan 2025-12-20 22:34

I bought a used M3P and they transferred FSD to the new one when I traded it in. Without that it'd be tough because I can't live without it but I wouldn't be able to stomach the cost.

rawtank 2025-12-21 16:53

Nice, that’s a good way to do it.
