Beginner question about defrost

LilJashy | 2025-12-13 15:08 | 121 views

It's my first winter with a Tesla, so excuse the dumb question. Does the glowing red mean that defrost is on, or just that it's blowing heat? I didn't turn on defrost manually (obviously, since defrost isn't highlighted), I only turned on the climate on 70. Thanks

The red on the rear means the defrost elements are on. The red on the front means the air is set to point at the windshield for defrost as well

canonisti 2025-12-13 15:13

Glowing red means its just blowing heat and heating front/rear windows. If you click on Defrost Car, that automatically sets the temp to HI and seems to use more powerful blower settings too.

Dontaskmethatplz 2025-12-13 15:14

It’s heating up your cabin, defrost is essentially the same thing but you can set defrost to a specific temp without having to manually change it everytime

TESLAMIZE 2025-12-13 15:17

I dont know the exact logic, but from my experience, the car will put on high defrost if the exterior temp is around freezing.

Existing_Sale_4835 2025-12-13 16:02

Don't ever use MAX heat when it's really cold and or your car is snowcovered. The temperaturdifference can crack your windshield. Just use the temp you would normally want the car to be, and start to heat the car with the app from your mobile phone. my 2 cents

ShoelessB 2025-12-13 16:08

I've done it plenty of times. No issues

tykkimies 2025-12-13 16:14

no that won’t happen

Medium_Confusion_ 2025-12-13 16:16

It'll only happen on certain Tesla with a windshield defect. If u do manage to do it it should be covered by warranty. Most of them this won't happen to

LilJashy 2025-12-13 16:26

Yeah that's what I'm trying to avoid. I know it will only happen if I have glass damage, but I'm not sure if I have glass damage so I don't want to risk it. But if that is doing defrost, it's still gonna be blowing max temp, just not for as long, right?

Anjhindul 2025-12-13 16:37

Yes, what this man says is the truth. Red means defrost. Just blowing air means heat/cool red color is only defrost.

Anjhindul 2025-12-13 16:38

No, red is defrost. Blowing air is heating/cooling. And before you argue, I already tested in the app, just to be 💯

word-dragon 2025-12-13 16:40

On a related topic, note that opening a frozen door has different instructions for black handles and silver handles. Used to have silver and now have black, which seem to work better.

teekoer 2025-12-13 16:56

This happened to me and thankfully was covered by warranty.

PocketShock 2025-12-13 17:18

I wish I could defrost without the blower taking over. Sometimes my wife and I are just singing in a cooler environment and it fogs up. I don't need to be blasted out. I feel like that could use some refining to allow me to set the fan speed. I just need it on the window.

Important_Ad_3602 2025-12-13 17:20

+1 Happened to me. I had been snowing a few days. The sun melted the snow and slid it down to my wipers. At night this froze to solid ice. Me happily defrosting from my bed without looking out the window. Windshield cracked. One half of the windshield was thick ice, the other none. I don’t do it anymore. Just preheat some longer.

ChrisSlicks 2025-12-13 17:33

Setting the front defrost to blue directs air over the windshield which can help. Also thoroughly clean the interior of the windshield and apply an anti fog coating.

ShavenAss 2025-12-13 17:56

Defrost ON for both front and rear.

WarningWonderful5264 2025-12-13 17:59

I am having issues with this as well. And still can’t figure out which ones are the front and which symbol is the back. I usually end up pressing all the buttons for defrost 😬

ShavenAss 2025-12-13 18:01

I use it everyday here in ass-freezing Canada. That kind of crap never happened to my model Y, nor to anyone that I know who owns a Tesla.

ZeroBalance98 2025-12-13 18:08

I just want to be able to defog the windows from the app

OrderNo2483 2025-12-13 18:11

This happened to me, covered under warranty.

canonisti 2025-12-13 18:13

Yea its not perfect. I'd love a defrost mode without the rear window heating. If there's snow on the rear window, it just freezes again as ice on the trunk cover and seal.

Congenial-Curmudgeon 2025-12-13 18:20

Open all the windows briefly, it’ll air out the high humidity air and reduce window fogging. Might have to do this periodically if you have soggy floor mats. Take the floor mats into the house to dry them out; it also helps raise your home’s humidity levels in the winter.

Baklazanas2 2025-12-13 18:52

Is there a way to disable auto seat heating, when this remote climate is on?

NotDaBiscuit 2025-12-13 18:58

It’s just heating up the cabin to your desired temp but it shows it like that since it’s running the rear climate control to warm the whole thing up. Defrost differentiates in how hot it puts that temp, If you turn defrost on and go inside your car you’ll notice the difference. That being said defrost manly works to melt snow and ice so you can drive safely though it does use more battery power.

FixyFixy 2025-12-13 19:04

I have the same problem. In a more traditional climate control you can blend the windshield into the air circulation and control fogging without a screaming fan

CompleteGene82 2025-12-13 19:29

Somebody posted a couple of days that their windshield cracked after using defrost. Slowly warmup the interior and let it defrost from that.

RNexus4 2025-12-13 19:30

Setting climate temp gently beats the whole car up instead of blasting, the windows especially. I had a very small stone chip and defrost was not kind to it, it's a Crack now. Live and learn.

RNexus4 2025-12-13 19:38

HEATS not beats, sorry.

itkilledthekat 2025-12-13 19:55

Set it to manual for each seat (make sure auto is not in blue)

Similar_Current5036 2025-12-13 20:04

This can’t be a real question

LilJashy 2025-12-13 23:21

Read through the comments and you'll see that the answers are about 50/50 split, which means roughly half of the people here don't know the answer

LilJashy 2025-12-14 00:34

How do I prevent it from defrosting if it evidently does it automatically?

KeeslerCondoChief 2025-12-14 01:07

What model do you have? My 26 MY doesn’t have the middle back seat heating/cooling option.

LilJashy 2025-12-14 01:19

2019 M3 lol. I guess they're secretly downgrading

Brawler6216 2025-12-14 02:52

If you activate the climate controls and the car detects fogging. It will auto-defog/defrost the windshields

Dazzling-Read1451 2025-12-14 05:15

Maybe Grok doesn’t appreciate your singing

_RanZ_ 2025-12-14 11:24

Why do you want to stop it?

abstract_tesseract 2025-12-15 03:39

This happened to me just yesterday as well

eried 2025-12-15 15:00

LOL the EV myths begin, like preheating non-carburetor cars. Or you should not engage PARK when blablab, or start-stop is bad to your x,y...

Moose-Turd 2025-12-15 15:39

Once you hit defrost you can lower the fan speed and temp. Defrost just defaults to high on both settings.

HopelessCatLover 2025-12-15 17:37

My windshield cracked this morning as well from the defrost :/

waynehengheng 2025-12-15 19:39

Do not use defrost. Just use climate control. I used it and it break my windshield. Luckily replaced under warranty.

Solid_PWT 2025-12-15 22:12

How cold was it out there??

LilJashy 2025-12-15 22:32

See the problem is that even when I just set the car to precondition, it appears that it's turning the defrost on

HopelessCatLover 2025-12-15 22:48

Last night hit somewhere under 10F. Preheated in the morning around 10.

crinklemermaid 2025-12-16 01:33

Sometimes the ac runs automatically when defrost is on. Anyone else?

aarunes 2025-12-17 08:32

I wish they allowed us to remotely activate the windshield wipers. Though probably too much of a risk for people that live where it snows. I just want to be able to summon my car when the windshield is covered in dew and fog.

pachooka13 2025-12-17 16:39

Interesting. What are the instructions for each?

word-dragon 2025-12-17 18:30

Anjhindul 2025-12-18 05:13

You can't stop auto defrost. Well, not unless you turn the heat off... that works, I guess?

archocinco 2026-02-22 22:43

Wife’s model Y auto defrost used to go to highest blower setting, now it starts low and takes longer… wonder if it was an update
