140ish miles per charge

Hi everyone, i just got my first tesla (model 3 standard range) and i am absolutely loving it so far. The only thing I’ve noticed is that I’ve had to charge it more frequently than expected. I’m getting around 140 miles per charge and that’s in Florida. Am i doing something wrong?

How fast are you driving? What temperature is the air con set to? Up hills or down hills? What’s the wind like? Air pressure in your tires? Any modifications to the car?

Its only reporting you used 28 Kw hours in since the last charge. Is that really 100% charge? The battery should be closer to 60 Kwh depending on model / year.

I may have a slight led foot but I’m never flooring it or sending things in the back seat flying. I have it set to 65-70, no hills, low wind. 0 modifications

Are you sure its not sentry mode draining the battery? It uses like 1-2% per hour.

How long have you had it is it used? What year is the car? Under settings what does it report the battery health as. Id be worried if a 96% charge is only 28kw. One thing is it could be a LFP battery which needs to be charged to 100% occasionally for it to accurately know how much charge is in it. If thats the case the % meter could be way off. On the charge screen does it recommend you charge to 100% or 80%. If 100% charge it to 100% and leave it charge so it can balance and get an accurate battery %. You should in that case charge it to 100% every week or every other atleast so it can keep track of the battery %. It may be its not been fully charged in a long while and has no idea of the %. Your miles / wh look fine but id expect roughly double the range if the battery was fine.

I bought it November 15th and it had 23k miles. It recommends that i charge it to 100%

That case as others said it could be sentry mode draining the battery or similar. Do you only supercharge as you say about patience? Are you able to charge it at home?

If you're not worried about anything at home/work, use the option to turn it off at those locations. Depending on how often it triggers it can really drain the battery. The reason I think its sentry mode is because it shows you're getting 230wh/mi, which is pretty good. I don't think it factors in sentry mode in those stats. You can go into the energy consumption screen to confirm, it will show you how much % sentry mode used.

No need to “install” a L2 charger, if your place has a dryer outlet, you can buy the necessary adapter/splitter and use a mobile charger. I used one similar to [this](https://a.co/d/fcttxok)

229Wh/mi \* 121 miles = 27.7kWh, the battery pack on the standard range is \~50-60kWh depending on what year you have so something else is using your battery. I'm guessing sentry mode

I just googled it and thats what it said. Depends on how much it triggers I guess. I left mine on on accident for a day (in the cold) and it drained like 15%, but I have the LR battery so I assumed for the SR it would be more.

BTW you can ignore most of those details for the sake of simplicity and just keep an eye on your Wh/mi rating. Then maybe worry about all that other stuff when you are looking to apply a solution / reach a certain goal with your range. Drive normaly and do not fret about all that stuff for now. You may never need to worry about it. You need more info on the car and what you expect from it. Paying attention to all of that might create a lot of stress for minimal to zero results, depending on your goals and habits.

Damn, was that from sentry or climate? I forgot another thing that can drain it when parked is the cabin overheat protection, I think most people turn that off.

Just a few things to share, turn off the sentry mode. It have options to turn it off like exclude home, work, favourites . And also precondition the battery before driving the vehicle.

As often as possible I type destination in the navigation, I don't exactly need the directions but car calculates energy consumption and warns if I'm going to run out/need charge on the way. It is pretty accurate with my drive profile, both travel time and charge %.

New owner here as well. Here’s a couple tips I’ve picked up the last few months: Cold weather shortens battery life dramatically and there is nothing you can do about it. The on board range estimator is crap - Download the Tessie app for better data analytics. Never charge past 80% unless on a road trip. Never let your battery go below 20% unless you’re in a pickle. Factory baseline of 220 wh/mi is in perfect conditions at like 40mph. Real world results are going to be very different Keep it on chill mode and drive like a lil bitch (no stomping the skinny pedal) Uphill and stop/go traffic will shorten range.

Yeah mine is usually pretty good as well. Last night was a rare failure. I was projected to arrive at 10% battery. And was actually getting 320 wh/mi vs my usual 350-400 wh/mi I had been getting all week. And yet despite the better conditions and better efficiency. I arrived at 1% battery instead. (Driving 60 in the right lane the whole time as well.). Very unusual. It is usually spot on within 3% for arrival energy.

The 80% charge advice wouldnt apply here. It sounds like he has a standard range with the LFP battery that can be charged to 100% regularly.

Or the battery pack is degraded and only functioning at 60%. -- But this would be unusual for a car with only 23k miles and a **lithium iron phosphate (LFP)** battery (which is typically more durable and long lasting).

The first month I had my Model 3, my consumption was crazy high. Aggressive driving, sentry mode, constantly waking the car up, climate control and a variety of other factors were to blame. I dialed in a few of the settings and fixed some of my bad habits and the efficiency skyrocketed. We are usually our own worst enemy when it comes to our charging/efficiency woes.

Don’t disable to climate control if you live somewhere with extreme weather, just set it to reasonable numbers. I made that mistake as well, it got so hot in the car that the steering wheel controls stopped working and the car was throwing alarm codes until it cooled down.

No it isn't. New real world tests are showing a very big degradation on lfp. It will be a big problem for cars with 3-4 years.

I own a 2020 model 3 standard range plus. Bought it with 32,000 miles and I also only get like 150miles max during the summer and now in winter we are down 100 ish miles in total range. I drive roughly about 70-75 miles on the highway. I don’t floor the car and I don’t drive like a grandpa either. I charge it to 90 percent bc I feel like 80 makes me need to charge it too often. We rely on superchargers to charge no option to charge from home and so every like 3 days or so I need to go charge the car again. We are averaging about 248wh/mile. I set this trip since I changed my 4 tires back on may. The tires have about 11,000miles on it. This range may be normal unless someone out there also own a 2020 model and can share their stats but it is definitely a bit low.

Check the battery health, this weekend try to get the car as close to 1% and so a battery health test if you have the Level 2 charger at home. Might have low battery health

Same story, mines a 2019 and get about the same, also rely on superchargers since I don’t have access in my apartments, I did notice that In the winter it eats through the battery alot faster, especially running the heater or seat warmers, sentry mode wastes alot also

LFP battery so can charge to 100% every time. He also lives in Florida so it’s not in the least cold. I’m getting 220-240 and it’s between 2-5C here for me and around 250 miles on a full change even at those temps

You need to charge all the way to 100% as you said it recommends 100% means you have an LFP battery pack. That’s a good thing as it won’t degrade the battery as much to go to 100% or down pretty low..but as the other poster said the computer and BMS (battery management system) needs you to charge to 100% every couple of weeks or at least once a month and hopefully leave it plugged in for a few minutes after that to properly calibrate the battery meter. You probably have 20 to 25% of the battery not even being shown it can be used. I rented an LFP model 3 and it had the same issue, I charged it to 100% twice that week that I had it and the car showed like 40-60 more miles than when I picked it up to rent….

Sentry Mode will take it down 1-2% every hour. I would also recommend charging to 100% to recalibrate your BMS and see what that does. But you are gonna charge more cause of the standard range.......welcome to the life.

make sure sentry mode and summon are turned off while parked at home. Cabin overheat protection can also use a ton of energy especially parked in the sun with little tint.

I have a 2019 LR with 80k miles on it and it gives me around 266 miles with an average of 315wh/mi. I manually turn on sentry when I need it, cause most of the time for me it's unnecessary.

2019 model 3 SR+ with 120k miles here and if I'm in traffic or following the school bus (band stuff for my kid) I can get 160 miles. If I'm driving solo somewhere I need to get to, knock that down to 100. I charge in my driveway though, so it's pretty perfect for me.

Older model 3's use resistance heaters rather than heat pumps. Turning the temp down and using the heat seater instead helps significantly.

I had a 2019 M3SR and that's about what we ended up getting driving in TX. Over 65mph and range drops significantly especially after 40,000 or so miles. The computer still shows full charge at 200-220 miles but actual driving miles drop.

I have a 26 model Y LR RWD and got my first taste of range anxiety last night. I had a 80% charge yesterday morning when I departed with miles showing 265 miles. I traveled approximately 165 and the temp yesterday was in the high 40° range. I drive on standard and don’t launch, but occasionally will get on it to get around someone. I also drive mainly using cruise control and most of those 165 miles were won the interstate. Less than 20 were city driving. I also had the CC set to 76mph on the trip up and at 70 on the way back. I got a notice that popped up on the display 25 miles from the house that said to start looking for a supercharger. I had about 20% charge left and I think around 70 or so miles left till depleted. As I was only 25 miles from the house, I figured I’d be safe and lower the speed to 65 (since it was after 10pm and the temp was in the low 30s and I didn’t want to get stuck with zero battery and my wife and I freeze while waiting for a tow.) I also cut the heat off since it was comfortable and turned off the footwell lights and led lights around the dash. Keep in mind, I’ve never driven it this low before and I’ve only had it for 3000 miles. Well, we made it home with 14% battery and about 50 miles remaining. I’m actually pretty disappointed with the range. I got seeing as how I don’t drive crazy. On the energy graph under the 200 miles tab, it says 279.3 Wh/mile which is 47.9 more than rated. Under the 100 miles tab, it’s 259.4 and 28.0 more than rated. And the last 10 miles tab shows 147.9 and 83.5 LESS than rated which I’m totally confused about since I was not driving fast at all in the city and 5 of those miles was on the interstate babying it. It just seems that it’s much less than what I would consider LONG RANGE. Tires are at 42 which is what is recommended and I drive pretty much the speed limit everywhere.

Dang, for that average that’s really good! I don’t feel like mine is doing the range it should for a 2025 LR M3. I probably average between 250-270 wh/mi and if I do that math for a full charge at the end of the day my 100% range calculates to somewhere around there. Using today’s numbers 100% would have gotten me 262 mile. Seems low compared to yours considering it’s supposedly 363 rated miles and my average is more economical than yours. Quite curious.

Yes, you have sentry mode turned on. That uses a ton of power. You're getting 229 wh/mi which is fine efficiency while driving.

So charge at you slowest rate possible more often then not.. long overnights, long days at work if possible ... that should help and try not to go under 10% or over 80%.. but seems like a failed cell group..

Turn off sentry and smart summon, you’ll be up to 200, based on your other posts. Which is low, but better. Mostly it seems you are burning through energy while parked. You should run the battery health test.
