1st drive home in the snow

sjk2323 | 2025-12-03 16:43 | 193 views

Got my 2022 LR AWD Model 3 in July and this is the 1st real snow I've driven in with this car. I was honestly shocked at how well the Tesla handled the roads. It was ridiculously slick and there were so many accidents. It slid every now and then, but got back on track really quick. Send good vibes that the snow melts soon so I can give her a good wash. She's disgusting after an hour long commute home from work! Also, if any of you guys have tips or setting suggestions you've used in the past to make driving in the snow easier, I'd love to hear them!

Did you do some offroading in a swamp before eventually? 😁 But yes, Teslas (especially AWD types) are fantastic in snow but even RWD is better than most cars due to the good weight distribution from the central battery pack and good traction control. Best winter car to have! Both for comfort & driving.

I feel like mud guard is a requirement for M3, I haven't driven in the snow yet but just regular driving I find so many black spots(break dust prolly) and just regular road mug marks all over the sides during washing

Snow tires are better than all season for snow driving, always. I recommend standard acceleration, light steering in the settings. Don’t turn on slip start unless you are stuck in the snow. Slip start setting isn’t great for driving, I found I spun out when I turned it on while driving.

Curious as to what tires you are running in the snow

DeathBlade94 2025-12-03 17:28

Before owning Teslas I had bmws and swore they were the best in winter weather. Never had issues or lack of confidence and in bad weather would pick it over the Tesla then one day it would not start (ICE issues in cold) so had to drive our only Tesla at that time for one snow storm I was converted. Even with less then ideal tires the Tesla was far superior in confidence and control is the worst of conditions.

OP this please. I live in a high snow area and would love to know.

Crix2007 2025-12-03 19:20

And also let it rip if you find an empty parking lot (mind snowed in bumps lol)

Crix2007 2025-12-03 19:22

My m3p really shined when it snowed in an hilly area. Snowed tires and it just kept going while most were struggling hard. The only guy really keeping up was in a s4 quatro decked out for winter. Only the battery drained hard lol. Nothing a fast charger can't fix

There’s just one thing i dislike about electric cars in snowy / icy conditions. Normally, you try to avoid braking as much as you can. But the car brakes by itself (regenerative). I hear you say ‘so turn that off’, but then the car reacts completely different from your normal drive which is not what you want in these conditions. Crawling out of the snow from standstill is absolutely great on dual motor. Zero wheelspin.

Ngl.. as a Tesla owner and also owning two BMW’s I disagree. My 5 series definitely allowed for more confidence than my 3lr, BUT the Tesla still does a fantastic job! Definitely better than my 3 series. The 5 series was so much fun I literally could not help, but to mess around in it just so I could lose traction when I was bored lol. Beyond predictable and all my vehicles are all seasons only. Today I’m getting some crossclimate 2’s out on my m3lr so I’ll see how that goes :) this performs on par with what I expected tbh. My truck does better and my cayenne s before I sold it also performed better, but that’s not shocking. So Idk maybe you had bad tires? If you had two 3 series or smaller than I understand because with my 3 series while it slipped some more I did find I had more control with the car. From time to time with my m3lr slips the car tries to help control by locking the wheels a bit and it scares the dog shit out of me because it almost caused an accident when if I had control I would’ve easily just steered to the side, but fortunately all was good.

You can rip it at 30+mph lol. I would not be able to get moving even with snows if it wasnt for slip start. I'm not sure how the newer model 3s are even possible to drive without having that option.

Donbino 2025-12-03 20:40

what wheels are those??

MeasurementMother579 2025-12-03 20:49

Those look like the stock 18" Tesla wheels without the aero covers.

MeasurementMother579 2025-12-03 20:50

Living in a snowy state, that was one of my first 'mods' was adding mudflaps/guards.

WoWLaw 2025-12-03 21:08

This morning was my first time ever driving in snow. I was in my M3P. Chill mode is a godsend, but there’s no real replacement for winter tires.

Maximum_SciFiNerd 2025-12-03 21:45

Around my parts in the Northeast ↗️ I ran dedicated snow tires on my past couple cars. Never really needed them here since our roads get cleared fairly quickly unless it's some big storm. I recently got a 22 LR AWD myself and it drives amazing in the snow even with FSD turned on

I don’t drive in the snow, but I must say a RWD Model 3 is extremely hard to drift, the traction control is definitely top tier!

louismeierer 2025-12-03 22:49

Make a snow driving preset. I put mine to 75/25 F/R power split with 20% regen. I’ve done this on the three teslas I’ve owned and it’s a game changer.

Picard-Maneuver 2025-12-03 23:36

I think only performance models with track mode can create setups like this. Although, I hear any dual motor will keep the front engaged after it detects slip for the rest of the current drive. Can anyone confirm?

Scary-Evidences 2025-12-04 00:20

She looks like she’s seen a thing or two… ya know…

NothingLeft2PickFrom 2025-12-04 03:10

Probably obvious but chill mode is perfect for snow/ice.

Muffstic 2025-12-04 03:39

I have crossclimate2 on mine, and steep icy hills were no match.

_ZeroSeven_ 2025-12-04 03:44

Had my 1st drive in the snowstorm the other day as well in my '22 M3P. Just had DWS06 tires put on 2 weeks ago, handled the storm like a champ, I felt more confident in this thing than I had in any other vehicle in a long time. Call me crazy, but having no engine noise seems to help me "feel" what's going on better when driving in the snow as well, especially when it's as slippery as this storm was. Did you feel the same way?

ducmite 2025-12-04 05:01

look up s3xy buttons and the off road mode you can enable with those. There are also other neat things you can do with them, so I would definitely recommend buying a set.

AJHenderson 2025-12-04 05:30

Surprisingly, even FSD is pretty decent in the snow now. Not proficient, but significantly better than a novice.

Dismal-Stock-1424 2025-12-04 08:28

Idk if it’s just me coming from mostly BMWs and Benz’s but i HATE teslas AWD. It feels slipper in the rain let alone snow. Gives me zero confidence where my BMW feels normal in all weather and my old s class feels amazing in everything.

Itchy_Economist3055 2025-12-04 11:01

Did you used winter or all season tires ?

davetalas 2025-12-04 14:24

Is this in Track mode? If so, that's a good idea, but also drains the battery a lot more, right? Because track mode heats up the battery (or cools it down) for optimal performance.

louismeierer 2025-12-04 18:02

It is not in track mode. It is simply making a driving preset

Crawdaddy-MktgGenius 2025-12-05 05:56

Need to add those snow flaps!

Make sure the “off road” feature is turned on in the snow. Makes a world of difference in handling.
