My 22’ M3P feels slow……

My buddy has a 2019 Model 3 Long Range (110k miles) with Acceleration Boost, and I’ve got a 2021 Model 3 Performance (105k miles). After driving his car for about three weeks, I’ve noticed his feels a bit quicker off the line and more nimble. I’m assuming the difference in wheels—his stock 18s vs. my 20s—might be a factor. I can definitely take corners at higher speeds with my car, but for some reason it still feels slower. Anyone else experience something similar or know what’s causing this?

I know that snap off the line you are talking about, same car here drove a 2020 long range awd and the earlier cars do seem to hit harder off the line

Couple things… 1. Is yours set to Sport (or whatever the highest acceleration setting is, I forget what it’s called on the Model 3)? 2. How are your tires? My guess is that if your _Performance_ Model 3 feels slower than a Long Range with Acceleration Boost, it’s either your acceleration setting, your tires wearing out, or it’s placebo. I recall some test that was done and at higher speeds (>60 mph), the Performance and LR + AB performed identically. But your M3P should absolutely feel faster. My money is that yours is on the middle acceleration setting (there’s Chill, Standard, and Sport or something like that) or your tires are worn out, causing slippage.

Are you sure yours only "feels slower" because it has better suspension thus rides more stable at higher speeds? A lot of what makes a car "feel fast" is when things start to feel a bit squirrelly. 25MPH in a car feels like a crawl, 25MPH on a skateboard feels like you're a pebble away from death at any moment.

I knew this would happen to me on my 2024 M3P (I also own a 2023 BMW S1000RR). I just try to keep it in chill mode which tricks my brain into thinking it’s pedestrian and then only hit insane like 10% of the time. That’s all I got

Dual motor? Sometimes mine doesnt feel as fast. Like if it's cold or the battery is low. But even when it's warm and fully charged, it's not always the same. I have acceleration boost too.

I went from a rwd to a long range dual motor to a performance and the performance is much, much quicker and more nimble, no questions. Not sure what you're experiencing.

Honestly the pull from 70 mph isn’t all that exciting to me either in my 24 M3P. I have a slow track car that has 300 hp that revs and it feels way more exciting than the m3p after 60 mph despite it being much much slower in the 60-130. It’s like we need to get a plaid to feel that higher speed acceleration but I really don’t want a 5k lb car for handling purposes

But now, I think I’m a bit annoyed at the fact that I don’t think there’s a nearly $30,000 difference. She has nearly the same car for much less

Stock 20s wheels are heavy and that is why long range with acceleration boost is faster in some cases. Downsize it 18 inch and keep charge level to 90% when you need full performance.

Gotcha, my S has three (Chill, Standard, Insane), but now that you mention it I remember my old Model 3 Long Range only having Chill and Standard, with Standard being replaced by Sport when I got Acceleration Boost. Is yours Performance or Long Range + Acceleration Boost? Not sure which model year(s) this applies to, but Tesla's [online owner's manual](https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_us/GUID-8EAFF5D8-7209-45ED-A7E0-508FFA60C530.html) lists Chill, Standard, and Insane as acceleration modes for Performance models. My guess is that OP's is set to Standard if it's not a tire wear and tear issue or placebo.

Used M3 performances for like $20-30k are on par price wise with like a new Honda civic but have super car acceleration and are cheaper to run long term. They’re such bargains for what you get compared to what you could get used even 10 years ago.

20s. For summers I have Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S and my winters are Pirelli sottozeros. There's stretches in spring and fall where it's not warm enough for the summers to be happy but not cold enough to justify the winters.

Not for speed. The Model S feels much heavier than the refreshed performance. The S option is great for longest range, but it's slow and floaty in turns compared to the highland 3.

It just seems natural and nimble after a while. Like any car should perform. I will never be downgrading performance voluntarily. I could even want more, but I do not wish to step up to the cost and air suspension vulnerability of a model S. That said, the 2019 M3 could definitively have more comfort instead of the pure go-cart feel it has. I have been thinking of upgrading, but the new enforced "features" make it a no-go: enforced beep if just over the speed limit, enforced noise at low speeds and backing up, and no possibility to set regeneration to low in the winter half year to save the brake disks from salt. It would be a downgrade.

I feel you lol. I test drove a Plaid before getting a Model S Long Range in 2023. I couldn't justify (what was then) $20,000 more just to shave \~1 second off my 0-60 time. The Model S LR does 0-60 in 3.1 seconds which is already obscenely fast.

Haha I actually test drove the new M3 last week, and that enforced beep drove me to insanity. There are quite some roads here that show as 50 km/h zones but **are** 80km/h zones, annoyed the heck out of me, and due to (EU) laws it's forbidden to turn off and every single new car has it, noooo... That being said the new M3P is a **huge** step up from the old M3P, at least in my opinion. While the 2019 M3P is a budget beast now, the new M3P is still a LOT of value for a 55k car.

The only solution is to forever buy increasingly older cars 😪 The EU is basically making cars undrivable. Even if speed limits were correct (and reasonable here in Norway, that is another topic), you have to stay 5-10 km/h under to never drift 1 km/h over and get that extreme annoyance. And some people obviously do -- I have never experienced as many extreme snail drivers as I do nowadays.

Oh yeah, it's dangerous. Lane assist is also enforced here, there are quite some small farm roads near my place where 2 cars drive on roads were only one fits, so you have to steer into the bank to pass eachother. Gotta love your car just yeeting you straight back to the middle of the road :D But yeah, 100km/h road, someone driving 90km/h, overtake them and hit 105 km/h.. BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. Arghhhhhh.

I can't speak about the Performance models as I'm just a lowly SR+ peasant, but I demo drove a couple newer Model 3's back in 2021 and 2023 when I thought about upgrading and the RWD variants felt slower than mine for some reason. However, that changed when I recently demo drove a 2025 RWD. For being the slowest Tesla, it was noticeably quicker than my 2019.

Comparison is the thief of joy. My 22LR with acceleration boost felt slow after I bought 23 m3p. My 23 m3p feels slow after buying a 25 m3p. Going from 20’s to 18’s did feel a little quicker across the board so that is a little bit. Buy a DRAGY and run them both 0-60 and find out for sure.

The stiffer and better suspension is going to feel more stable in all kinds of ways that stock Teslas won't. You have less back to front dip when you brake, less front to back dip when you hard accellerate, and WAAAAY less body roll when cornering (although EV's already corner insanely well in general because the battery along the bottom makes your center of gravity basically right between the wheels instead of riding over them.) All of that combined could explain why the lesser car "feels" faster, if your brain associates instability with speed.

Old 2019 has Panasonic batteries, if remember correctly it’s slightly quicker 0-30 but 0-60 is similar (for same Models) One way to be sure: test it with a device like Dragy, or dragrace your friend Edit: in EU it’s Panasonic vs LG chem batteries (panasonic has sone advantages)

I'd venture to say that yours is probably still better but have better isolation and suspension, and that tends to give you the feeling of slower. Think like riding a Tacoma and driving at 70 mph.

It would be interesting to see metrics on this. I have a ‘22 LR with acceleration boost and they seem pretty similar to me. I wonder if new tires would make a difference. Maybe get some expert opinions on what would give you the best launch. Both cars run 11s but you should definitely be at least almost 1/2 second faster. I feel you though, chasing the dragon so to speak. This car has me looking at plaids now. Where tf does it end lol

It’s the LFP pack in the 22/23/24 SR variants that brings the 0-60 to 5.8 seconds. Older RWD and LR RWD had high 4/low 5s 0-60, which came back with the 24 LR RWD refresh.

Got my 22 M3P middle of summer this year. Had low miles (27k). I wanted a car that I could drive around town like a go kart, after driving my 22 Toyota Corolla for my daily commuite. This thing is quick. Quick off the line. Quick coming around the corner and roars to triple digits in a blink. BUT... after like 2 months, the initial sensation of speed fades. Don't get me wrong. It's fast. Certainly too fast if you're heavy footed like me.

The (previous gen) m3P really falls off after 60. I barely hit 11.7 @118-120 in the 1/4 mile, whereas the "base" model s LR hits 10.8s @135+, even though they have similar 0-60s. Not sure why the Tesla website currently limits the S to 130, they've been at 149-162 for the last few years and nothing's changed afaik. Also there is a standard metric for punch above 60, the 60-130. From some general searching, previous gen m3Ps run in the high 12s to low 13s, the LR runs in the high 9s. For reference the new M3P runs low to mid 9s and the plaid is in the 4s 🤯

I dont even have a performance minded set up. They're 235/40/R19 all around Kumho majesty 9 Solus ta91ev They're all seasons so I bet with a wider summer tire on lighter wheels it could make a difference. I do notice that I feel a bit more punch when I have it in track mode with stability and traction off. But im no pro so idk lol

I noticed it helped when trying to accelerate quickly from a stop or waiting a light. I too said my car started to feel slow and this was recommended to me.

One thing I noticed is that it seems model 3’s with accel boost have crazy throttle response where as the M3P is more linear and that gives the guttural feeling of being faster when in reality it’s not faster.

I’ve never had a chance to directly compare. But I Have a 2020 M3 Dual Motor w Accel Boost and it is crazy snappy off the line and for the first 3-5 sec. Then it quickly levels out. And I notice the suspension isn’t optimized (read mushy) for the motor performance. So i’d assume then Performance model has more sustained acceleration and has an obviously superior suspension for cornering and loading up and braking?

I have a 21 model 3 performance and recently just purchased a 23 model y performance. The reason why I brought the model y performance was because I thought it would drive almost exactly like the model 3 we have. I was disappointed that it felt a bit boaty and not as responsive off the line compared to our model 3. I test drove the juniper model y rwd and it felt way faster off the line compared to my model y performance. I definitely knew there was something wrong with mine. I randomly done a software update on the car and now the car drive very similar to my model 3 performance and the 0-20mph pick up as waaaay faster and responsive now. Also, make sure “Obstacle awareness acceleration” is disabled in your car as that can interfere with initial acceleration. Hope this helps

Your 20” wheels have very little to do with taking corners at higher speeds. Your tires make the biggest difference in skidpad performance, with suspension in second place. You could put PS4 tires on the 18” LR wheels and get basically the same skidpad performance. The 20” wheels are very heavy and are definitely hurting your acceleration. Basically every Tesla I see at AutoX has switched to 18 or 19” wheels.

Yeah, I bought my wife a Model X for her and the new baby. I inherited the 3 for daily duties. It’s a great car but it’s no S/X. If it had a hatch like the S, I’d be fine. That one thing bothers me because loading things is more of a chore and that brace in the trunk! That’s the one thing that may push me to get into a Model S long term. The bad thing, I really enjoy the size of the Model 3. I’ll grab it over the Model X to drive around because it’s more fun.

The 2019 probably comes from the suspension. Tesla switched to softer suspension for 2021+ model years. I have a 2022 model 3 LR and when I drive my mom’s 2019 that suspension is as hard as a rock. Also quick tip if you want to get off the line quicker turn on slip start. I did a lot of testing with that. And it was always quicker 0-60 with that turned on.

Do what I did — get a used Model X Plaid to go alongside the M3P. The Plaid (even in the X) is so unusably fast for a daily driver that it weirdly humbles you. Flooring it for more than two seconds on any public road is risking your license. I never thought I would ever think a car could be “too fast” — especially not a heavy 6 seater crossover on “small” 20’s and friggin’ all-season tires. I love it but it weirdly makes me appreciate driving my much “slower” ‘18 M3P sometimes. Perspectives on fast change when your family Mom-mobile can pull high 9 seconds in the quarter.

I don't know if my car just can always detect some kind of obstacle, somewhere, or what. but a while back I felt my 22M3LR was feeling much more sluggish than it used to and that Tesla had changed pedal mapping or something in a software update to improve range figures but I turned off obstacle aware acceleration and it was fixed I just try to look out for obstacles myself just like in every other car

We got a clean ‘22 blue with cream interior with 22k miles (no FSD) for $55k from a third party dealer. My wife traded in her gas car and brought the price down into the 40s. Honestly it’s weird to say this since all my cars have been small-ish sports sedans and I swore I’d never daily an SUV, but the X is now my favorite Tesla followed by the M3P. It handles canyon roads way better than you’d think even on the 20s with all season Hankook EV SUV tires, and it hides its weight well. Plus the auto doors are a cool feature, the falcon doors are a game changer with a toddler, and it’s quickly turned into our primary vehicle. The M3P obviously has better handling and it’s more nimble in city environments, but the X still surprises me with how well it maneuvers - especially with the UP rear sway bar upgrade. My only gripe is the brakes. Never understood what the auto journalist meant by Tesla brakes being bad with the M3P. I’ve got a MPP brake brace on the M3P and it sheds speed immediately with even a light touch of the pedal. The X Plaid has a squishy brake pedal in comparison and you don’t start to feel braking until about a quarter of the way in. And that’s even after I installed UP steel brake lines with Castrol SRF fluid. And unfortunately, MPP doesn’t make a brake brace for it. The brakes definitely work on the X when you need them, they just don’t inspire confidence especially with the 1020 hp and how quickly it accelerates. My next upgrade is definitely going to be a big brake kit, which I don’t mind paying for since we got the thing so damn cheap compared to new lol.

Sure thing! And nope — we rented a ‘22 X Plaid from Turo on vacation to test it out and then bought ours a few months later. Only other version I’ve tested is when we got a ‘25 X base loaner with HW4 and FSD from Tesla after tearing down the Plaid and sending it in for some warranty work. It was the first time I felt impressed with FSD, so I get why HW4 equipped Teslas cost more used if FSD is your jam. But I’ll also say that the only noticeable difference between the ‘25 base and our Plaid is the power. Just bringing that up because I think the 2020-21 Performance and 2025 base are rated for the same 0-60. Hate to admit it, but the base still felt plenty powerful enough for me while the Plaid is literally like bringing a tactical nuke squirrel hunting. I’d personally find a ‘22 refresh with warranty left.
