Crazy…I remember when it was $10

Machineslave240 2025-12-01 23:54

In the first month that I got my 2025 M3P the windshield got hit by a rock that flew off of a truck going the opposite direction. The windshield had to be replaced. That alone paid for me to have that protection probably for longer than I’m likely to keep the car. 2 months ago we leased a 2022 Model Y for my wife and that one needed the windshield replaced in the first month as well. We live in the Houston, TX area. Lots of trucks throwing rocks on the highways. I’m already thousands of dollars ahead now thanks to having the windshield protection on both Teslas. I’ll be paying for that protection for as long as we are both driving Teslas. And we both love our cars and are very likely to replace our current Teslas with new ones when the time comes!

Swarmhulk 2025-12-01 23:54

Why not use your insurance?

Ok-Accident-3892 2025-12-01 23:59

Exactly what I was thinking. My insurance covers windshields under the "other than collision" coverage with no deductible for like $4 a month.

cavey00 2025-12-02 00:00

Still cheap for the pelting my glass takes on the Vegas freeways daily. No, that’s not from following a rock truck around either. They drop em, cars redistribute them randomly.

AllCapNoBrake 2025-12-02 00:02

inflation is a beotch.

voodoo_mama_juju1123 2025-12-02 00:02

Central Texas over here can confirm as well. It has more than paid for itself already

drivingaddictionchan 2025-12-02 00:03

Cuz they might raise your rates  Insurance is a scam

malochico1 2025-12-02 00:04

I am 67% that it counts as a “claim” under your insurance. Which when you renew, will cause it to go up.

Ok_Excitement725 2025-12-02 00:04

Windshield coverage is unavailable in many states unfortunately, plus it can count as a claim in most states and can raise premiums and a penalty if you change carriers since you have to say you have made a claim when signing up. But for those lucky ones in places that have free or no claim penalty windshield coverage, consider me a bit jealous!

rupees_al 2025-12-02 00:11

Has glass got a tariff now?

cavey00 2025-12-02 00:12

Not every state or company offers that

diesel559 2025-12-02 00:13

🤣 right

Ok-Accident-3892 2025-12-02 00:13

I guess that's a possibility, but I've used it 3 times over the last 7 years or so and never had a rate increase because of it.

sk8terboy111 2025-12-02 00:16

I was surprised but I’m still keeping it. GF spent $500 already on two repairs, she will have to replace hers soon. For $16 a month I’m in, although $12 was better. My deductible is 1k so insurance isn’t the answer.

[deleted] 2025-12-02 00:16

negative, you have to be a serial filer of windshield claims for it to matter once every few years isn't going to raise your rates

drivingaddictionchan 2025-12-02 00:20

What state?

Ok-Accident-3892 2025-12-02 00:21

NC

bespectacledboobs 2025-12-02 00:23

Is there any type of validation done on their end before they did the replacement? Like showing them video, etc.? With typical insurance coverage, a claim within a month of establishing coverage (or even a few months) would likely trigger an investigation into fraud. Two separate ones would be especially suspicious. I have this windshield plan and still find it reasonable compared to adding this to my regular insurance, but I’m hesitant to have a minor crack looked at given I just purchased this plan and the crack happened literally days after (and I’m not even sure when/how).

jbudjailbreak 2025-12-02 00:23

Got this the same day they charged me $99 for FSD when everyone else gets it free.

bespectacledboobs 2025-12-02 00:24

Same exact situation. High deductible, high cost to add on glass protection, and no risk of raised rates.

Historical_Bag4520 2025-12-02 00:28

Usually insurance is pretty good for windshields. Overall I agree it’s a scam though

drivingaddictionchan 2025-12-02 00:32

Very good to know

ZeroBalance98 2025-12-02 00:35

Does Tesla insurance cover windows?

foochacho 2025-12-02 00:38

Windshield protection program is insurance.

Fit_Act_1235 2025-12-02 00:39

Because they only cover a portion. In Florida you’re entitled to free windshield replacements up to a certain amount. My model 3 replacement was $1400 and insurance only covered $1100 of it (reimbursed) and I have more than full coverage. Tesla plan is cheaper and I don’t have to go out of pocket when it breaks

quicktopost 2025-12-02 00:39

Might be all the owners taking in their new vehicles in for a replacement windshield. Two MYs here, and I am still keeping the subscription.

tomrossi7 2025-12-02 00:39

I’ve never had a crack in any windshield until the past three years, when I’ve had one each year with my Tesla. Perhaps it’s just bad luck? I’m curious to know if I should try an OEM windshield from Safelite or stick with Tesla’s.

Machineslave240 2025-12-02 00:40

You only have to sign up and keep paying for it monthly to have the coverage. Then if you get a chip, crack or worse, you start a Service request in the app. It will ask you to take pictures and a short video to show the windshield damage. Then that gets looked at my someone who will then move it to the next step which is for you to approve the estimate. This is the exact same process whether you have the coverage or not. Then it will show you the estimate but also show you zero cost since you have the coverage and you approve that and schedule the service appointment. Mine was mostly just a rock chip when I took it in but they said it was too big so the windshield would have to be replaced. I declined that because I didn’t really have time that day for a full windshield replacement and was hoping they would do a quick repair. About a week later it turned into a massive long crack shooting out of the chip, so I scheduled another appointment and got it replaced. On my wife’s MY we knew it needed to be replaced so she allowed enough time for that and just got it done. You get unlimited chip repairs and 1 free windshield replacement per year. If you need more than 1 windshield replacement per year the subsequent windshields are $100 each. Everyone I know who has this protection has used it and never had any issues or questions asked. And everyone I know who didn’t get signed up in the first 30 days has had to pay their insurance deductible to get a windshield replaced and wishes they would have got the coverage. TL:DR They won’t give you any problems and will just repair or replace your windshield as needed. Definitely get the coverage even at the higher $16 per month.

bespectacledboobs 2025-12-02 00:42

Thanks. Do you happen to know what the “repair” option entails vs. replacement? Do they fill in chips?

xxRichBoy25 2025-12-02 00:46

I cancelled mine as soon as I finished reading.

Machineslave240 2025-12-02 01:00

They said they will fill in chips as long as the chip(s) are not too big. They said it is up to the discretion of the technician performing the repair to determine if it can be repaired or has to be replaced. So if you have a big chip I’d be ready to sit there for a few hours while they do a full replacement just in case.

ab0rtretryfail 2025-12-02 01:04

Exactly why I signed up for Tesla's windshield insurance. I don't even want to risk it making a claim with my auto insurance. It's insurance for insurance!

Clu_Rebooted 2025-12-02 01:04

You can thank Trump for that

GlassCoffee1 2025-12-02 01:07

It’s covered under comp and subject to your comp deductible. Tesla insurance does not have a separate glass policy or glass only deductible(at least for California)

ZeroBalance98 2025-12-02 01:11

Nice. I’m assuming one benefit of going with the protection plan is avoiding actually using insurance and causing your premium to increase

BlurryEcho 2025-12-02 01:25

That is because you are in a state where it is unlawful for an insurance carrier to raise rates for an auto glass repair claim. Even then, in states with these laws, carriers can and will drop insureds for a higher-than-average frequency of auto glass claims. So even if you reside in one of these states, if you live in an area where road debris is bad then this plan may very well be worth it.

jburnelli 2025-12-02 01:28

the deductible is really high for it. I've never owned a car that went 3 months without some type of windshield damage. The tesla coverage is a steal.

jinjuu 2025-12-02 02:07

No it’s not. It’s a service agreement like AppleCare.

Andres7790 2025-12-02 02:45

Still worth it

texrygo 2025-12-02 02:48

Ask to take an extended demo while you wait. They’ll get you one unless they are very busy.

foochacho 2025-12-02 03:01

AppleCare is a form of insurance too.

Rondoman78 2025-12-02 03:02

Lol dumbass

Full_Lab3475 2025-12-02 03:09

Sucks but still cheaper than adding glass protection to my insurance coverage.

ninjaneer68 2025-12-02 03:22

They have a similar one for tires I was thinking about signing up for.

Minnesota_Nice1 2025-12-02 03:32

This. I am the one that didn’t and has to get his windshield replaced via my insurance. Don’t be me.

Machineslave240 2025-12-02 03:34

How much is that costing going through your insurance? If you don’t mind

Minnesota_Nice1 2025-12-02 03:45

Don’t mind at all! The third party shop used Tesla OEM glass. $1900 somehow. When they ****ed it up and sealed it improperly, had distortion on the glass, and broke the temperature/humidity sensor and told me it was installed properly, I went to Tesla who confirmed it was not done right. $1600 out of pocket later, they replaced it. I had to pay out of pocket because my insurance told me to pound sand as the shop I used was only in network for glass/collision…I switched the claim to glass only as the pillar paint touch up was only a couple hundred dollars and I didn’t want to make a claim…apparently that made this shop out of network, which they neglected to tell me over the phone when making the change. I’ve been fighting them for months and they won’t pay for the replacement. My circumstance is unique, to be sure, but it was still a nightmare using a third party shop regardless. Never again.

hmspain 2025-12-02 04:02

Back in the ol' days ... like last week?

Machineslave240 2025-12-02 04:18

One of my coworkers used his insurance to get a windshield replaced and they only made him pay his comprehensive deductible, but a couple months later when it was time to renew his policy they went up about $80 per month on him. I don’t see any good options other than to pay for that windshield coverage and I totally feel like it is worth every penny even at the new higher rate. Heck it’s probably worth it even at twice the new rate. Let’s just hope they don’t keep going up on it!

Machineslave240 2025-12-02 04:27

This is correct. They gave me the crappiest Model Y that they had available but at least I got to go to work for a few hours while they did my replacement. My wife was happy to just sit in the waiting area and play on her iPad while they did hers. You can’t always get a loaner but usually you can if you ask right

Machineslave240 2025-12-02 04:29

Did they go up on the Model Y as well as the Model 3? We haven’t received an email about that for my wife’s Model Y yet. Only my Model 3 so far

Minnesota_Nice1 2025-12-02 04:44

Amen to that. I do understand why some people think this isn’t worth it. I was on the fence, staring at the subscribe button. The last day I was able to. A few weeks later, my windshield was shattered. And I don’t have the patience or time to go through the rigmarole I went through using third-party again. I also live in Florida, and while I know, state law requires ensures to replace windshields without a deductible, I don’t know that it says anything about preventing rate increases.

Hot-Accountant-4425 2025-12-02 05:11

Just in time for Christmas… I’m getting🧃 to death lately…

DifferentCup8282 2025-12-02 05:33

I had my 2025 m3 just a couple of weeks, got two Rick chips, went to Tesla to have them fixed. Instead of fixing them, they just replaced the whole damn windshield. Told me they had minimal tools to do rock chips, since I had the windshield coverage, they just replaced it. Felt like a total waste for a couple of chips.

ExcitementLarge6439 2025-12-02 06:08

What state is this in ?

Ambitious_Dirt_3810 2025-12-02 07:01

I have a tinted windshield, will it cover mine?

mcbergstedt 2025-12-02 11:15

The lumber trucks where I live are awful. Worst ever was when one launched a softball-sized stone into my Truck’s hood/windshield at 70mph.

RBBCPA_98 2025-12-02 12:49

Still an amazing deal for me given that I live in Texas and am insured through GEICO. In Texas (through GEICO) windshield protection is only available if you have their mechanical breakdown coverage, which is only available for a vehicle with less than 15k miles. I bought my ‘21 M3P with 23k, so $192/yr is cheap coverage.

drivingaddictionchan 2025-12-02 14:37

Yes but the concern here is primary auto insurance. Does filing a claim with Tesla windshield impact your primary auto insurance?

cavey00 2025-12-02 15:01

We got no lumber in these parts but I feel ya. Every car I’ve owned in the past 2 decades I’ve had to put a windshield in. Didn’t bother me too much before but we’re talking $150 windshields. Our little model 3’s? 10x that much. The windshield insurance was an immediate buy and still is at this price.

Weezthajuice 2025-12-02 15:12

? I haven’t seen this

ninjaneer68 2025-12-02 16:07

Look in the app under - upgrades / service plans https://www.tesla.com/support/tire-protection-plan

Purple_Bottle_5295 2025-12-02 16:24

Dude it’s 4 bucks a month you’ll be fine🤣

Turntablez12 2025-12-02 20:54

In the UK this is generally covered under your insurance!

fr3d0511 2025-12-02 21:53

I have yet to sign up for this to begin with. I still intend to.

foochacho 2025-12-02 22:49

No. Neither does filing a glass claim with auto insurance.

Ornery_Climate1056 2025-12-03 00:19

Wow.....a whole 4 bucks a month.....let's throw a pity party!!!

Ornery_Climate1056 2025-12-03 00:21

Toyota Rav4.....also 10x as much.....Subaru Outback, same. Windshield rplacements are ridiculously expensive.

Floating_Bus 2025-12-03 00:21

They gots pay him that trillion dollars somehow… 🙄

Weezthajuice 2025-12-03 04:38

Ah I see. It says it’s only available 30 days after vehicle or tire set purchase. Good to know tho. Thanks!

ZeusAdvocate 2025-12-03 07:25

Everything going up out here. Usually found superchargers at times for $0.21, now I can’t find one below $0.34 at any time except these new type of chargers I’ve been seeing that charge at 325kw max output

dinnae-fash 2025-12-03 08:59

Is windshield glass not an insurance item in the US? In the UK it is included but not as a normal claim, you just pay a small excess for a repair (about £20) and a slightly larger excess for a replacement (from memory about £50-75).

TPGStorm 2025-12-03 15:37

saved my wallet so i’ll never get rid of it. got mine in july and signed up for the windshield insurance on the last possible day and chipped my windshield not even a week later, which turned into a long ass crack before i even actually put the claim in, would have been $1500+ but basically paid 50 bucks with the monthly payments i had made

AkaMrknowledge 2025-12-03 15:41

On my car insurance I pay an extra $3 per month to make deductible for any glass including roof top only $100 deductible

msb175 2025-12-03 21:47

Yeah. Sucks but still better than adding/using insurance for me.

sm753 2025-12-04 20:37

Why are people paying for this? Most vehicle insurance covers this for a very nominal fee on your policy.

lordbancs 2025-12-04 21:58

The windshield yes. The tint, no, you’ll have to get it re-tinted

Quickshot_Gaming 2025-12-04 22:23

I’m getting mine replaced next week and I added on the inspection to get the coverage. I’m part of the problem.

quicktopost 2025-12-05 05:45

Yup, it showed up for both of ours. It should show in the app under notifications.

Smooth-Oil-3814 2025-12-05 08:12

My trial period ended on the 13th of this month. I signed up for the $12 rate. 3 weeks later I received the same message! I feel like the classic “bait and switch” happened! 😡

Smooth-Oil-3814 2025-12-05 08:14

Yes. I received the message for my Model Y

Smooth-Oil-3814 2025-12-05 08:16

Did you get the tire insurance as well?

[deleted] 2025-12-05 21:59

i asked my insurance( Statefarm), they do have comp glass replacements and it counts as no-fault claim( although still count as claim/ minor claims). they also said premium wouldnt raise but most likely they would raise or drop you if you claim too many times. also they can not promised that they would use OEM glass from Tesla( Safelite is their glasses provider) my Premium raised for 120 for 6 months if I wanna keep the deductible at 0. but with all the hassle and chance of premium might raise, not OEM glass( Safelite ) or drop my coverage. I decided to pay Tesla ~200 per year( 16/month) rather than saving 80 bucks with claims and headaches

Which_Title1394 2025-12-06 00:45

Isn’t that usually included with auto insurance automatically? Or is this a Tesla thing?

Painter_Particular 2025-12-06 15:31

I wish I had this option. You should be thankful. Mine cracked and it’s $1000 through insurance because that is my deductible (34 never had an accident which is why I have deductibles at that) and I do not live in a state with the option for reduced glass claim. I would be stoked to have what you have.

Optimal_Traffic_5000 2025-12-06 16:15

I have the additional glass coverage on my insurance for all my cars and I think it adds $10/month for both cars. No deductible. Why don’t you do that?

FamousStore150 2025-12-06 16:50

I know, right, $48 more a year! The audacity of them to do this. Hopefully, the sarcasm comes through on this.

jinjuu 2025-12-07 03:32

If it’s over $1000, it does. Which Tesla windshields are.
