I Fixed Tesla’s Terrible Wireless Charger with a 3D-Printed Drop-In Replacement electronics housing

oddcouplings | 2025-11-29 19:36 | 95 views

Got sick of the inconsistent, overheating, stop-and-start wireless charging in my 2023 Model 3, so I designed a complete drop-in replacement for the OEM WC3 wireless charger. Consisting of a 3D Printer Electronics Housing and a custom 3D printed OEM Connector. It uses two aftermarket 20W wireless charging modules, sits closer to the charging surface, and charges my iPhone 16 and my Partners 12 Pro Max flawlessly no cut-outs, no destruction of original Parts, no heat issues, and still looks 100% OEM once installed This should fit cars that use the WC3 module (most 2021–2023 Model 3/Y) but your milage may vary. Nice, I'll look into this as my 2026 Model 3 has the same issue... 🙄

ZataH 2025-12-01 09:34

hmm must be a Iphone issue. Never had issue in mine, which I have had for 3½ years now.

melvladimir 2025-12-01 10:31

No, it’s not. In my M3 2022 15 Pro and 16 Pro Max are charged normally

ZataH 2025-12-01 10:33

Oh okay. I have a 2021 M3. Had several phones with no issues. So maybe it's just the 2023 model? Haven't really about from any of the people I know with Tesla

melvladimir 2025-12-01 10:51

I guess it’s “random”, more like assembling issue. Also the charger is not so powerful for iPhone, about 5W only (for Qi it can be up to 15W)

Manta-Avoid 2025-12-01 13:32

DO WANT.

SpacemanTomX 2025-12-01 14:24

I have the theory that if you’ve got a MagSafe case the charging works a lot better

jebidiaGA 2025-12-01 15:17

We've never had any of these issues with our 2023 Y

SpenseRoger 2025-12-01 15:53

My 13 mini will not charge unless I take the thin case off and put something below it to move it up a bit. 2021 Y

notthediz 2025-12-01 15:54

I upgraded from a 13 to the 17 pro max. I use peak design case for my motorcycle mount and my wireless charger hasn't worked since upgrading. Feel like this might be crazy enough to fix it. Roughly how long does it take to do the install? I've already got trim removal tools I bought for getting to the cabin filters

Schizoidman007 2025-12-01 16:38

Never had any issues in my car of 4 years with either Samsung or iphone

CG_throwback 2025-12-01 17:48

Cable all day long. I think that area is pointless don’t like the 15w.

Gigtooo 2025-12-01 18:15

Never had a problem with my iPhones in the car. Don’t know wha u mean bro.

oddcouplings 2025-12-01 18:17

Don’t really see the point in these comments 😂 it’s a common and well documented issue for many owners, happy that you have never had to experience it though!

That’s how it is on my 2018 lol

[deleted] 2025-12-01 22:46

I never use it. I don’t trust wireless charging. It gets the battery too hot. Which is bad for batteries.

AlbieriMS 2025-12-01 23:56

They all charge fine but is comically slow.

MoaiJeff 2025-12-02 01:55

You are doing the Lord's work right here. I have a 2022 and 2023 and the chargers almost never work on either car with several generations of iphones and cases. Honestly the stock chargers have been pretty much useless in my experience. I had a 2020 also and it worked as it should

sparkyblaster 2025-12-02 10:48

I miss the first gen where they had USB cables and an optional QI pad. Way better system.

Chuckelberry77 2025-12-02 10:53

same here

Capital-Ladder-1313 2025-12-02 12:35

Never had this issue, my only problem is my Fold 7 is too tall, so the Tesla screen blocks the top third.

Distinct_Bed1135 2025-12-02 13:17

I can confirm, I have a magsafe case and works flawlessly for me

retlem 2025-12-02 14:35

I have an S24 Ultra and an iPhone 16 Pro Max. Both have cases that are compatible with wireless charging. The iPhone doesn’t work unless you remove the case. The Android works perfectly fine.

Seansong82 2025-12-02 15:03

My 2023 RWD did this too, seems like its fixed in the Highlands though fortunately. Edit: Good on you for posting it to Makerworld and sharing the link for everyone :-)

UnevenPants 2025-12-02 17:09

I’m 1000% going to print this out and test it on my 22 LR. I have to lift my phone off the charging pad and move it around several times before it will charge my 14 Pro Max. Thank you for this!

PrestigiousDrag7674 2025-12-02 17:53

i have a plastic case, and my Google pixel phone charges fine, but recently i got a iphone 17, and charging is on and off.. I would love to get this mod.... but i am a dummy when it comes to tech. any good solutions?

mrandr01d 2025-12-02 23:31

Counterpoint, I have a qi2 case and the charging is worse.

mrandr01d 2025-12-02 23:31

I have a pixel 10, with a qi2 compatible case. I'm gonna have to try this...

Informal_Drawing 2025-12-03 01:42

It works poorly because you're using a case around your phone. All that effort for nothing.

lewisdonofrio 2025-12-03 04:06

Where is the file on thingverse?

endfossilfuel 2025-12-03 09:15

I have a MagSafe case and the charging works not at all lol

CourseEcstatic6202 2025-12-05 16:10

I miss the old wired charging and the door that covered the phone in my 2019 M3P. That stuff worked and didn’t light up the car on every push notification, text message and phone call.

Nicnl 2025-12-06 14:09

Not fixed in the highland. My 12 pro constantly overheats in my highlands' wireless charger. Short trips are fine, I do get like 5% of charging. But longer trips... it overheats and throttle the charging so much that it actually discharges, and I end my trip with less than I started with.

LostBoySteve 2025-12-31 17:38

Does anyone have any insight as to whats best for a 2018 and the newer apple and google magsafe chargers?

spikespike7 2026-03-03 14:57

I have both s24 ultra and iphone 17. Both phones charge flawlessly on my m3 and my. It just a really slow charger just enough to keep your phone alive. I also have wallet case on my samsung with 2 - 3 plastic cards and still charges
