Cybertruck Attempts to Fling Baby Onto Highway

A couple says their Tesla Cybertruck nearly dumped their baby onto the side of the highway after its passenger door latch failed, The Oaklandside reports. The incident occurred as they drove up an on-ramp and the back passenger-side door flung open, the couple said. Fortunately, the car seat saved the baby from being flung out the car, but it was an alarmingly close call. And had the 60-pound stainless steel-clad door swung back closed, it could have smashed the child’s hand or arm. When Viral Shah took the vehicle to a Tesla dealership shortly afterwards, the company offered to buy back the vehicle for nearly its full purchase price, so long as he agreed not to sue the automaker. He took the offer.

I'm in the middle with FSD because I've seen it do smart shit like completely reverse own a snowed in hill and find an alternate path, etc which is impressive. Then I've seen it nearly run into a pedestrian or completely nearly total a car by running into debris in the road. It sucks that the truck sucks, but 1 - the car seat is supposed to be secured and there should be nearly zero risk of your child leaving the vehicle even if the doors and roof fly off. Secondly, if someone was in the backseat without a seat belt then you probably should just kick the out of your car anyway.

This is sensationalist. Driver didn’t properly latch door, blame’s dealer is a more likely headline here. It’s like the Toyota Prius man mistakes gas pedal for break fiasco.

The way it reads is mostly that the kid wasn’t in any real danger because they were in the car seat (except maybe from the door flinging back closed).  But the psychological toll from that must be massive.

Actually if you click into the 2nd article it references, they didn't tighten the door striker plates on that car. They were hand tight and one bolt backed out causing it to pop open. Tesla offered a buyback and the owner accepted. That's not because of user error. Tesla fucked up the assembly. That said, the incident occurred in September 2024 but the article is bubbling up that NHTSA ignored the complaint. It is sensationalist but that was some gawdawful quality controls. You’d need to have a screw or two loose before actually buying one of these.

It is impressive in a way but that comes with a huge caveat. It can do 99 trips (arbitrary number) successful. And that is no small accomplishment. But it will try to kill you on the 100th trip. But with those 99 successful trips, you can get a lot of good video. And while that seems like it is close to ready, that 99 out of 100 is miles away from being ready. It has to be 99,999 out of 100,000 trips to be at human level. To get to 200 trips between human intervention could be and is likely years away. More so, it might not even be viable on visual alone. And along with this, the gains are not incremental. It is the march of the 9 for Tesla and that is a slow slog and they may never get there.

Article said the issue was caused by the door striker plates not being tightened, so multiple loose screws (bolts in this case). It did occur a year and a half ago and this article is a rehash + new complaint filed with NHTSA b/c they somehow lost/ignored the original.

You need to understand that we live in a world where a significant number of people saw this thing and took it seriously.

Thanks for the link, Yeah you don’t expect that on a new car but I’ve had latches come loose on older vehicles before. The whole automatic latching piece would make that hard to detect.

And the public still knows about it. So tesla wasn't able to cover anything up. Personally, I would have wanted to sue BECAUSE they offered payment in exchange for lack of responsibility, but for financial reasons I might have capitulated.
