Tesla's 'self-driving' software fails at train crossings, some car owners warn

nbcnews | 2025-09-17 16:55 | 314 views

More here: [https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/elon-musk/tesla-full-self-driving-fails-train-crossings-drivers-warn-railroad-rcna225558](https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/elon-musk/tesla-full-self-driving-fails-train-crossings-drivers-warn-railroad-rcna225558) In interviews, six Tesla drivers who use FSD said they experienced problems with the technology at rail crossings, and four of them provided videos. **NBC News also found seven other Tesla driving videos posted online showing similar mishaps dating back to June 2023 through August.** Those drivers declined to be interviewed. * The complaints are even more widespread on Tesla internet forums, where drivers describe similar mishaps without usually posting videos. NBC News found 40 examples on Reddit, X and YouTube since 2023, including posts as recent as August. * Regulators with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) told NBC News in a statement that they had raised the issue with Tesla. **“We are aware of the incidents and have been in communication with the manufacturer,” the agency said.**

NHTSA is gonna say "yeah we talked to Tesla, they said it just happens sometimes. So i guess that's as good as it gets. Nothing to worry here. Bye." The agency is a fucking joke

Guaranteed to push the stock even higher.

LightMission4937 2025-09-17 17:12

Tesla said, don't rely on FSD.

Weird, I've known it can't handle train crossings for years. I thought it was listed in the official disclaimer when you turn it on, but I can't find it. I mean there's a lot of stuff it can't handle so it becomes impossible to list it all.

It likes to go flying full bore at the ones that are just controlled by a yield sign. Where I live, if you hit one of those at speed you’ll go dukes of hazard and bottom out hard on landing, if you’re lucky enough to stay on the road.

How are these things on the road?

CetisLupedis 2025-09-17 21:31

Just at train crossings though. Every other scenario it's totally successful lmao

Nice, another catalyst for the stock to hit $500

*Just drive your fucking car*

Computers_and_cats 2025-09-18 03:30

I'm convinced the system relies more on map data than the cameras.

Musk knows that FSD can not understand level crossings and train tracks. That is why he wanted everyone to use Hyperloop rather than trains. ;-)

Grok this: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4f-crzpZ9w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4f-crzpZ9w) Not only can Tesla self-driving not detect the train SIGNAL, a Tesla can't even detect the actual fucking TRAIN. It has no realistic chance of reliably detecting the signals.

Wiseguydude 2025-09-19 02:34

What are some of the other major things it explicitly can't handle? What about stopping for school buses when they're in the opposite lane?

ElectricalGene6146 2025-09-19 06:24

It fails in many places

gamblersfalacy 2025-09-19 12:54

Tesla systems run on ketamine

gamblersfalacy 2025-09-19 12:55

lol

gamblersfalacy 2025-09-19 12:56

Fuck railroads. “Railroads should be obsolete and replaced with Tesla trains that are powered by ketamine”. Stock should go up atleast 40 percent on this news.

ArQ7777 2025-09-19 22:29

Elon Musk means that not every time a Tesla on the crossing, a train happens to be there, too. The chance is very slim.

Can we get the FCC guy in charge of the NHTSA? he sure seems to want a fight.
