From the article: Tesla has given up on bringing wireless charging to the Cybertruck, according to the its lead engineer. He claimed that they figured out it didn’t make sense on a efficiency basis, but there might be more to the story. In 2023, Tesla teased a new wireless home charging station – pictured above. The automaker never commented on the situation other than releasing this picture as part of a presentation. The image pretty clearly shows a wireless charging station and Tesla did briefly acquire a startup that focused on wireless charging before selling back most of its assets, but not before integrating some of its staff. Cybertruck was expected to be the first Tesla vehicle to feature wireless charging. Tesla’s Cybertruck owners manual confirmed that the automaker had included ‘Inductive Charger headers’ on the electric pickup truck’s battery pack. Based on this fact, it was clear that Tesla planned to release a home wireless charger with an optional retrofit receiver for the Cybertruck. Wes Morrill, Tesla’s lead engineer for the Cybertruck, has now confirmed that Tesla has given up on those plans. In new comments unearthed from Discord, Morrill confirmed that Tesla has no plan to bring wireless charging for the Cybertruck because it is too high: Nothing planned there, wireless charging for something as far off the ground as CT is silly. You’d need a base station that’s like 6 inches tall. The main reason we didn’t make the trunk tub fill that space was actually we did that initially and no one could reach stuff at the bottom because it was too deep. The engineer is claiming that the Cybertruck is sitting too high, which would create too big of a gap between the ground transmitter and the on-car receiver – reducing efficiency. Porsche recently announced that the new electric Cayenne will have an optional wireless charging system.

Tesla misleading on a promise they made. I am shocked!

za72 2025-09-09 11:08

I get the impression that their technology isn't really thought out that well...

One-Entertainer-4650 2025-09-09 11:13

Almost as if it doesn’t exist right now but they promise it will be ready next year…

Intelligent-Rest-231 2025-09-09 11:20

It’s still a boat though right? Right!

za72 2025-09-09 11:31

I'd be ok with that... but they haven't thought through the process, this is like first semester of product design, maybe take some online classes at the local community college, plan out your product details, etc etc...

linknewtab 2025-09-09 11:35

What happened to the robotic snake charger they showed like 10 years ago?

Livinincrazytown 2025-09-09 11:35

Well at least they still have the extended range battery pack… oh wait /s

ionizing_chicanery 2025-09-09 11:40

Wireless charging for the Cybertruck was a terrible idea but being a terrible idea hasn't ever stopped Tesla before. See: the Cybertruck.

BrtFrkwr 2025-09-09 11:57

The only way to do it is inductive coupling and messes with a lot of things from pacemakers on up. Also it has to be really close which is what ruined it for Nicola.

Monk315 2025-09-09 12:14

Once again another product/acquisition by Tesla that was used to breathlessly inflate the stock has fallen by the wayside.

WoolshirtedWolf 2025-09-09 12:17

It's hard to kiss major ass and whiteboard science shit at the same time.

GarysCrispLettuce 2025-09-09 12:23

Cybertruck drivers can't go anywhere without being pointed and laughed at. Wired charging is the least of their worries.

Enough-Meaning1514 2025-09-09 12:25

Elmo is doing Elmo things. Shocked!

LowRes 2025-09-09 12:35

I never understood why anyone would want this - wireless charging is less efficient. It would be like having an ICE vehicle and pouring a few extra gallons of gas in the trash can every time you filled it up.

SackofBawbags 2025-09-09 12:39

That’s why I do the 5 min battery swaps instead

soldieroscar 2025-09-09 12:43

Add it to the list… FSD, cybertruck battery pack

That-Whereas3367 2025-09-09 12:43

Any undergraduate electrical engineer could tell you it wouldn't work.

[deleted] 2025-09-09 12:46

That should be good for a 5-8% increase in the stock price. Just think about all the money they will save by not implementing this.

[deleted] 2025-09-09 12:47

Maybe if you stack one bad idea on top of another bad idea it turns into a good idea? Just like two wrongs make a right.

Free_Range_Lobster 2025-09-09 12:47

>but there might be more to the story. Elon lied. That's it. That's the story. >The engineer is claiming that the Cybertruck is sitting too high A vehicle that has ride height adjustment? Nah, you're just making shit up.

beren12 2025-09-09 12:51

Once. They call the Titanic.

Desperate-Hearing-55 2025-09-09 12:53

That there are peoples buying that ugly Dumpster is beyond me.

FieryAnomaly 2025-09-09 13:05

Musk Math: A negative multiplied by a negative always results in a positive.

Lacrewpandora 2025-09-09 13:05

There are already several ways to charge a Cybertruck "hands free" Option 1: Use that snake charger that totally exists Option 2: Use that battery swap station that's real, I swear. Option 3: Have you personal Optimus robot plug it in. TSLA has just demonstrated flexibility and decided not to confuse the customer with too many options. IOW this is a catalyst.

VirginiaLuthier 2025-09-09 13:10

Their namesake, Nicola, couldn't make wireless electricity work, either

R4c0NN 2025-09-09 13:11

Definetly gonna be ready in about a year. For sure, trust me bro

Ragnarok-9999 2025-09-09 13:28

Ok, another pipe (or Ketamine ) dream comes to end. What next?

North-Outside-5815 2025-09-09 13:30

They were never serious about it, unless Musk was delusional and smelled his own farts.

Agile-Cancel-4709 2025-09-09 13:31

I have a feeling it would be more of a Titan submersible situation.

mishap1 2025-09-09 13:53

It's sitting with the Robotaxi vacuum arm bot In the overflowing demo bullshit warehouse which is why every time they make a new casting, they have to cart it outside their 10M square foot facility and lay them out so drones can see.

mishap1 2025-09-09 13:57

CT is a few dozen half-baked ideas piled into one giant nesting doll of inescapable fiery death.

hotwifefun 2025-09-09 14:01

Stock price just went up 2% on the strength of this article.

rbirming3 2025-09-09 14:06

Do you own one?

BrawndoElectrolytes 2025-09-09 14:08

And bulletproof!

rbirming3 2025-09-09 14:09

Yeah you’re right. We should never think outside the box and try to do anything new. If we all thought that way, we might still be using a horse and buggy.

rocketonmybarge 2025-09-09 14:17

Is this the same wireless charging tech to be used with the Robotaxi???

LostDefinition4810 2025-09-09 14:23

Hasn’t everyone given up on wireless charging? Once DC entered the chat, it was over.

WildFlowLing 2025-09-09 14:24

But what about the battery extender 🤡

FragmentofInsanity 2025-09-09 14:41

And the stock goes up

Exciting_Turn_9559 2025-09-09 14:50

Some very strong signals this week that Tesla's having serious revenue problems. The absurd, insane, impossible announcement about Elon's $1T compensation package is probably telegraphing that the company is circling the drain.

MixSaffron 2025-09-09 14:54

Get a hose and fill it with water, seal it up, plug one end into the Tesla and the the other into the charger, BOOM, wireless charging! Ain't no wires in a hose of water!

lovely_sombrero 2025-09-09 15:00

This is excellent news in this case. Wireless car charging is terrible, what a pointless waste of energy for basically no gain.

kveggie1 2025-09-09 15:11

another Elmo failure.

Atactos 2025-09-09 15:46

Bullish!1!1!1!

Castle-dev 2025-09-09 15:52

I’d encourage cybertruck owners to test it out

halfbakedfuckwit 2025-09-09 15:59

🤣 ya, why build out a well known and understood technology already employed across Europe and go back to FSD, which most competitors have more or less nailed down.

GlassHeart09 2025-09-09 16:15

This would imply they were trying to make legitimate working products and features before "giving up". All signs point to no.

Centralredditfan 2025-09-09 16:16

Probably fried too many cats and small animals. That pad had to generate so much (waste) heat.. Induction charging is NOT efficient.

dextercho83 2025-09-09 16:26

The fact that people bought into it....

ProdigalSheep 2025-09-09 16:39

My first thought as well. They actually showed us that, right? And that was pre-AI? Was that CGI or what?

huuaaang 2025-09-09 16:49

It is thought out. And we know it’s slow and inefficient.

RocketLabBeatsSpaceX 2025-09-09 17:10

They ought to just give up on it all. Do the world a favor.

bw984 2025-09-09 17:18

Now you buy a $200,000 Optimus robot to plug in your Tesla for you. Duh.

linknewtab 2025-09-09 17:25

I remember seeing it on Colbert: https://youtu.be/gV6hP9wpMW8?t=47

RevolutionCrazy7045 2025-09-09 17:46

guess the [laser windshield wiper](https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/tesla-cybertruck-uses-lasers-instead-of-windshield-wipers.176009/) aint happening either

ProdigalSheep 2025-09-09 17:50

Ah, so someone was remotely controlling that one is likely the case.

FrogmanKouki 2025-09-09 18:01

Okay but do you know more about manufacturing than Elon? Yeah I didn't think so

R4c0NN 2025-09-09 18:03

You guys don´t understand shit. Wireless charging is already here for all Teslas. The charging cable only needs to be connected to the charging station for legal reasons!

BajaRooster 2025-09-09 18:15

Stock goes brrrr

SpudsRacer 2025-09-09 18:37

The amount of copper required for the coils alone would make this a dumb idea. Remember when Elon pranced around telling everyone how he was a first principles thinker? Pffft.

friendIdiglove 2025-09-09 18:50

Elon knows more than any person alive on Earth, according to Elon.

Thomas9002 2025-09-09 19:44

SippieCup 2025-09-09 22:38

Tbf, only the legacy s/x cars produced before 2021, were quick swap compatible. Nothing else ever was.

ConkerPrime 2025-09-10 03:53

Musk is an idiot. Something like wireless charging is a material science problem not a throw tech at it problem. Current methods are not sufficient to the task so new material (if possible to even create) is needed.

ScoobyGDSTi 2025-09-10 13:53

>Wes Morrill, Tesla’s lead engineer for the Cybertruck, has now confirmed that Tesla has given up on those plans Oh Wes, as if you'd publicly admit you were involved in engineering that PoS.

hk4213 2025-09-10 17:07

Not every idea is able to come to fruition. And that's okay. It's knowing when to stop investing in a bad idea.

Are you saying wireless charging isn't less efficient than wired charging? Because if you are then you are incorrect. I didn't say it didn't work or that Tesla invented it, but it is a fact that wired charging is more efficient.

LowRes 2025-09-11 01:45

Oh so you just want to be a pedantic ass. It's less efficient. We both can pull numbers out of our ass about how much less efficient, but those numbers will always say one thing - wireless charging is not as efficient as wired. How much gas would be the equivalent isn't the point and that you focused on that part is ridiculous on your part. And I said a few, not several so you can’t even be honest in your rebuttal.

LowRes 2025-09-11 05:04

I’ve never been wrong in this because my point has been it’s less efficient…and it is. I may have slightly exaggerated my example but my overall point still stands. And way to leave out that your article is about a silicon carbide based system in development and not the current lithium ion battery systems that Tesla uses today which can have much greater % of inefficiency (which would make my example more accurate). But sure once silicon carbide batteries become ready and cost effective for mass adoption; and Tesla retools it’s battery production facilities to produce them instead of lithium ion batteries; and then they revamp their charging network to handle the newer silicon carbide Tesla models and the existing lithium ion teslas; while also deciding to use this highly optimized system that oak ridge is developing; then you are correct, the difference in efficiency might be negligible in the future.

LowRes 2025-09-11 06:30

You never proved anything other than future systems might be more efficient than what current tech is. But even then, wireless would still be less efficient. And current wireless tech is inefficient enough that my example could easily be accurate so that criticism of yours isn’t even valid. Sorry dude, you’ve been on the losing side from the start in this thread because all you’ve ever had is that ‘it may be more like a half gallon than a few’ which is really not even the point.
