World's first Cybertruck attempts the Rubicon trail

xMagnis | 2025-08-28 00:28 | 60 views

A hefty 41 minute video of the mess that was the attempt to drive with a Cybertruck on the Rubicon trail. They basically failed to even get past the Gatekeeper, the start of the trail. Why on Earth did they think they should keep going? The rest of the video shows a skateboard-flat "truck" lurching and banging its way, mostly being towed by the Jeep. They admit they didn't show every failure which just makes it funnier, as the entire video is essentially breaking suspension and steering parts the entire time.

Calling this thing a truck is a crime against humanity.

LVegasGuy 2025-08-28 00:36

Cybertruck should cross the Rubicon and never come back.

Engunnear 2025-08-28 00:36

Rule 5 has betrayed us.  Approved for obeying the rules, even though the video title is absurdly wrong.

[deleted] 2025-08-28 00:49

And if failed. You cannot claim it finished it if it got stuck on the trail for almost a week and then needed multiple assistance vehicles to rescue it.

[deleted] 2025-08-28 01:00

tl;dv version.. Some douchebag that wears his hat backwards paid too much for a truck.

Free_Range_Lobster 2025-08-28 01:55

So it broke more than any other stock vehicle in the history of the Rubicon. Zero surprise whatsoever.

xMagnis 2025-08-28 01:59

Quite possibly it broke sooner too.

FlyingArdilla 2025-08-28 02:09

'Just put a sedan suspension on it. What could go wrong?'

xMagnis 2025-08-28 02:23

Yeah. And in "very high" and "extract" heights the suspension may even have less travel than a sedan.

mrpittman 2025-08-28 02:24

Trying to be as fair as possible i'm surprised it made it at all, The rubicon is no joke and most semi stock trucks out there from Tacoma's to ram trx's and raptors would not have made it either. But the cybertruck being so heavy and ifs is just dumb and a recipe for disaster. Maybe one day someone will straight axle one and try again and maybe do better.

xMagnis 2025-08-28 02:33

You can tell from their video that they knew this, literally at the very beginning when they failed to clear the Gatekeeper. It was discussed several times, even on camera, we should stop and go back, the Cybertruck can't do this trail . When it was tied to the tree on the trail at the beginning of Cadillac Hill they basically said "we're done, the Cybertruck is dead". The rear axle was shattered, they had the red screen of death, and other things were wrong. They said they would have to call a trail recovery wrecker. It's only because two Cybertrucks of Tesla engineers (mechanics?) came up the other way with the ability to fix it that they got going. It was pull-dragged though after it broke repeatedly. Amazing that they have the hubris to try saying after that, that it was a win on social media, they clearly admit it's a failure in the video.

Tbh a lifted Ford Focus probably does better than a Cybertruck lol

ddesideria89 2025-08-28 03:32

Hey, what did the rubicon driver ever did wrong to you!

DenyNothing1989 2025-08-28 03:32

Counterpoint: Donut Media just took a $2000 used jeep liberty with highway tires, one of the most hated and least capable jeeps ever made, thru Rubicon (admittedly with support) https://youtu.be/9uSrgRnqi00?si=gAihbXZ6jGVykSD0

There's some YT videos of a guy in a normal Crown Victoria doing Moab.

mishap1 2025-08-28 05:28

He also built an entire business around kitting these piles of shit out to cosplay as off-roaders. Talk about doubling down.

Darryl_Lict 2025-08-28 08:17

I just watched a Gatekeeper video to understand what it is, and I'd like to know what the most stock vehicle is that completed the Rubicon. I've got a couple of high clearance 4WDs and I would not be caught dead rock crawling because that shit scares the hell out of me. I like going offroading, but just to get somewhere interesting.

portar1985 2025-08-28 08:26

Just looking at the gatekeeper part you can see that the Jeep is handling it way better on road tires xD

QuellishQuellish 2025-08-28 12:41

The Focus is a very common rally car platform. Don’t know how they crawl but I bet you are right.

DreadpirateBG 2025-08-28 13:47

Everybody’s is paying too much for any truck nowadays. Some see the cost of trucks. Might as well be a luxury car. I do t know how people do it. Pride or ego seems to beat common sense.

DreadpirateBG 2025-08-28 13:48

Finally a correct comment. Not sure the straight axel thing but yes trucks off the lot would not make it unless the driver is lucky and very careful.

bobber66 2025-08-28 14:15

I posted this on the other thread, but here it is again. I did the Rubicon Trail in my stock Ford F250 about 40 years ago. I did not break anything or break down. What does Ford know that Elon doesn’t?

TormentedOne 2025-08-28 14:29

The road starts out pretty bad. Entry and departure angle is a problem for sure. I could see the stock suspension not being able to handle the trucks weight with even limited articulation going on. I can do it on an electric motorcycle in about 3 hours. The first hour is a granite playground. Cybertruck is better for Baja style off roading for sure.

xMagnis 2025-08-28 17:41

The Jeep is literally dragging the Cybertruck as well as them winching it. The Jeep not only passes the obstacles but has to tow the CT as well. They had to keep piling rocks under the tires and pulling with their winch against trees. I wonder if any other effort has met with such consistent failure - literally from the very beginning (Gatekeeper) to the end (Cadillac Hill). Then the owner says at the end, essentially, "it's amazing, the Cybertruck 'drove me' to the trail and then 'drove me home'", meaning the FSD, like it's some kind of accomplishment, except it couldn't actually *do* the trail. The video narrator stops and stares at the owner like he can't believe what he's just heard, the owner somehow still trying to declare a win from this fiasco. What a numbnut.

IcyHowl4540 2025-08-28 22:50

I hear they [won a trophy](https://images.steamusercontent.com/ugc/764896815832737055/5901AF5E82C18AAC4CF7AD1AA7E7AAED9A18E56E/?imw=268&imh=268&ima=fit&impolicy=Letterbox&imcolor=%23000000&letterbox=true) for being towed up the Rubicon!

IcyHowl4540 2025-08-28 22:51

Now hold up, was the Crown Vic an *Interceptor?* Because Crown Vic Interceptors have an absurdly overbuilt suspension, built for doing whatever the fuck the police are doing on the show Cops

Chaz_wazzers 2025-08-29 00:14

The video. Looks like a typical grandpa Crown Vic https://youtu.be/vHvXi_HejnI

IcyHowl4540 2025-08-29 00:20

fuuuuck yaaaaas

DisastrousIncident75 2025-08-30 13:04

It’s just a dumpster on wheels

NicholasWeaver 2025-08-30 16:31

It takes a lot of driver skill but any fresh off the showroom floor Jeep with a "trail rated" logo on it can, because the logo means the model has been explicitly tested by said extremely skilled driver on the Rubicon trail.

xMagnis 2025-08-30 22:48

I have no beef with them trying it (though real trail folk can be pissed they stuck up the trail). And fine, since it's their truck go ahead and do whatever you need to do to get it home. But they are strutting around on forums saying they conquered it, and underplaying just how many parts they broke (likely because they don't want to shit on their own aftermarket company parts. The Cybertruck did terribly, just terribly, they didn't finish the trail, they bypassed sections, got stuck immediately and often, then got towed, then broke totally and got rescued. That's a loss.

FrivolousMe 2025-08-31 17:16

it's going to be so infuriating how many of these are going to get bricked and left in the middle of the forest. Nothing could go wrong with leaving volatile and explosive batteries out to rot in one of the most forest fire prone regions in the world right?

tomdurk 2025-09-01 15:01

So if you bring along tow trucks, it might make it.

Agrippanux 2025-09-01 20:10

This seems like a really good ad for the Jeep
