Is it worth buying a 20/21 Tesla Model 3?

corelopsia | 2025-07-19 21:56 | 25 views

Just wanna do a small upgrade, and looking at the 2020-2021 Tesla Model 3 RWD for 25k miles at around £16k. Is this a good purchase? Is there any issues with reliability that comes with a 21 plate Tesla? I’m aware that the 2020 Model 3s don’t have the heat pump. Also, the 21 don’t have Ryzen processor, but does this make the car obsolete?

Wouldn't recommend it

For those miles honestly yeah. That's a pretty good deal. I would recommend seeing if it still has any warranty yet and see how good the battery is but for $16k you can't beat this deal, especially with how much gas is now.

Why?

I posit there is a moral problem with buying a Tesla. Of course they are 'good value' at the moment because by far the majority of people, in Europe, anyway, wouldn't want to be seen dead in one: >‘Sickening’ and ‘evil’: Musk bashed for USAID cuts after study predicts millions could die. One physician attributed the estimated death toll of more than 14 million over the next five years worldwide to “one man’s cruelty & venality.” Source: [https://www.msnbc.com/top-stories/latest/sickening-evil-musk-bashed-usaid-cuts-study-predicts-millions-die-rcna216832](https://www.msnbc.com/top-stories/latest/sickening-evil-musk-bashed-usaid-cuts-study-predicts-millions-die-rcna216832) If, instead of buying a Tesla, you buy something else, that will help drive down the price of second-hand Teslas, which, in turn, helps reduce the sale of new Teslas, not least of all because people will be concerned how much they depreciate in value. Of course you may disagree with those estimates of the impact of Musk's actions, or not care about them. You may, as he seems to, [find the idea that people found his not-a-sieg-heil-salutes distasteful, humorous.](https://www.nbcnews.com/now/video/elon-musk-posts-nazi-related-puns-after-backlash-over-inauguration-gesture-230137413690) You do you.

Because it's cheap garbage

Because Elmo is a bellend.

Slight_Pomelo_1008 2025-07-20 01:24

you should ask this in other tsla fans subs

Puzzleheaded-Shake37 2025-07-21 10:50

It's okay, just like getting herpes and HIV is probably not the end of the world, with proper medication.

In many ways they’re a great car if you want cheap and quick A to B motoring. But, the older cars had horrid build quality, they’re not the best looking car, people will hate you because of Elon and dealing with Tesla is a mixed experience but one I’d never want to have again. You’re also not going to lose much at that end of the market if you decide it’s not for you. So if you still like it, then yes, buy it.

Ffs this is why I hate this sub nowadays. It used to be a good place for openminded discussion on Tesla. Now it's just a hate and troll sub, I'll try to answer your question. I have a Tesla Y from 2021 (or maybe 2022), and whilst I am not in love with it. some pointers. Make sure it's a Model built in either Germany or China. The build quality is nowhere near as shit as what the USofA gets. The mileage sounds good, and RWD means it's not a performance build which is imho a good sign as well. However make sure to get one with a heatpump, that's a huge energy drain otherwise. Hardware I don't think you'd have to worry about.... Well OK maybe worry about it, since UK is not EU anymore. But iirc the EU has had a fight with Tesla before because they said HW 2 (or something) was FSD compatible, which it wasn't, so they had to retrofit everything. Also make sure to look into warranty, I think 8 years on battery should be normal.

Tesla model 3 have the highest rejection percentage at their first mandatory inspections in several Nordic countries, and I think in the Netherlands. They are not built to last, and are expensive to repair.

North-Outside-5815 2025-07-24 20:00

Yes, what could have happened? Repeated lies from the CEO over the years, and then goimg full Nazi. Odd that the sub has soured on Tesla.

WildDogOne 2025-07-24 21:22

this sub has gone militant around 3 years ago. So before the nazi story

North-Outside-5815 2025-07-27 19:10

Well, Musk has been a nasty union busting serial grifter for all of his time at Tesla at the very least. Some people just cottoned on quicker than others.

WildDogOne 2025-07-27 20:12

doesn't mean it should be agressive like this. people ask a legitimate question, then the answer shouldn't be, do you really want to support nazis? in general I don't like teslas, they are not really that good as a car. Especially if you have ever driven... a car. But they are also not all bad.

North-Outside-5815 2025-07-27 21:38

How bad does Elon and Tesla have to get before you think a boycott is warranted? Elon helped end the American republic, and is promoting the far right in effing Germany. Where is your limit then?

michaelboltonkennyg 2025-07-28 05:53

Elon hate aside, I wouldn’t. Tesla is the only source for Tesla parts, no aftermarket at all . They aren’t the only company moving this way , but one of the few that could truly go belly up if their financials stay on current track.

WildDogOne 2025-07-28 06:15

see, there we go again. The poor guy was talking about a god damn second hand car from 2021. Not about a new car. Boycotting second hand cars, wow... Not buying new cars, yes 100%

North-Outside-5815 2025-07-28 10:38

The other aspect is that Teslas are cheaply built and expensive to repair. They are also hated now, so there is some danger of vandalism. Model 3 specifically is the car with the highest failure rate at mandatory four year roadworthiness inspections all over Europe.

WildDogOne 2025-07-28 11:30

right, now we are actually talking about the subject more objectively, I think that is the way to go. I am also aware that the build quality can be super bad, especially if you get a tesla assembled in the US factories. I have a Y, and it has some panel issues and so far that's it. However we will get it checked by a third party before warranty end, so everything can be fixed. My personal differences, and why I used to frequent this sub, are the absolutely inexcusable software issues. My 10 years old VW Golf had better ACC then my Y. And it pisses me off so much. And since the parking has changed to Vision, adios another array of sensors. Absolute shitshow this company tbh... As for vandalism, at least where I live, 0. And I think that's good. Arguably one could say if someone has a new model Y, then yes, they deserve a kick in the shins for that atrocity, since at least then it should have been woefully obvious that Musk is not only an idiot, but also a fascist.

North-Outside-5815 2025-07-30 17:40

I also hope that people with older Tesla’s don’t face vandalism, as understanding of just how bad Musk is fairly new to among the wider public. It’s a very gray area however, as I totally understand people being disgusted by the brand now, and lashing out. Glad to hear you got a well built example. It may well serve you for the next five years, at least. I don’t know what happens if the company goes under, however.
