A 23-year-old in a Tesla survived a violent crash near Los Banos on Monday morning. The single-car crash happened at approximately 4:34 a.m. on the northbound side of Interstate 5 near Panoche Road, Myles Anderson, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol, told SFGATE. The driver veered from the highway’s left lane for “unknown reasons,” crashing through the center divide and into the guardrail, the CHP said in a Facebook post. Photos of the severe wreckage published by CHP show the car impaled on the guardrail with its airbags deployed. The CHP said the driver only had minor injuries. Anderson added that there were no arrests and authorities do not suspect drugs or alcohol were involved. The driver, a Westminster, California, resident, was driving using the Tesla’s cruise control and lane assistance features, Anderson said.

Tesla should add a virtual vehicle status channel to the dash cam videos. One extra virtual feed could either look like anything from a text-based screen to a expanded virtual drivers console or data rich HUD. Time aligned with cameras. This would show speed, brake position, steering wheel force, steering angle, status of driver assistance,, headlights, tail, lights,, navigation, FSD visualization would be really nice, and other measurements.

All that stuff tends to be stored in the event of an airbag deployment anyway. It's just not publicly available information. The authorities can access it via legal means.

Why can’t third parties add apps like this? I have seen accessories plug into the computer and collect data for like a HUD or Instrument cluster.

In crashes tsla scores great. And that is a good thing because they crash alot more often than other brands.

So the driver just gets a pass? Unless it was a medical emergency someone who has a proclivity for driving through the center of the Interstate should never be allowed to drive again.

"The driver, a Westminster, California, resident, was driving using the Tesla’s cruise control and lane assistance features" Robotaxis in California coming up next!

Hmmm not according to: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/jul/05/the-vehicle-suddenly-accelerated-with-our-baby-in-it-the-terrifying-truth-about-why-teslas-cars-keep-crashing?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Veered for "unknown reasons" -- then... "The driver, a Westminster, California, resident, was driving using the Tesla’s cruise control and lane assistance features, the \[spokesman\] said." LOL, I think I can guess the reason.

This is why I don’t even use autopilot or auto steer on the highways. My Tesla is basically in “dumb mode” at all times because I don’t trust Elon.

Musk will be mad - the witnesses aren't supposed to survive to risk derailing the corporate narrative.

Oh it changed lanes alright...

Ok-Bill3318 2025-07-10 10:28

Tesla across their range is actually 2x the industry average in fatalities per mile

Even if it was a medical emergency I could have swore some of the Tesla safety systems are supposed to reduce the chances of offroading or crashing.

I felt the same way about a Tesla being parked in the middle of the road, but I saw a Cybertruck parked in a bike lane a few weeks ago, and being a Cybertruck that meant it was also partially blocking the right traffic lane in a no parking zone. One would think that cars that can supposedly drive themselves would also report themselves when they become road hazards, I was also thinking in terms of a situation where the driver became incapacitated and had to pull over, and it seemed like common courtesy as well as safety best practice would be for the vehicle to alert authorities after a grace period when going 0 mph in the right of way, but no, I had to call that one in.

Never thought killer robots would have wheels on them.

Dude he should be ready to take over at any point. It's "supervised" k?

Big_footed_hobbit 2025-07-11 18:13

no joke. Before reading the article, the words veered of the road came to my mind. And it is true. It is so sad what autopilot became. No sensors, no lidar, and all of a sudden it veered of the road. Just terrible
