robotaxi testing it seems

HeronOrganic3727 2026-03-08 20:01

Looks more like cybercab to me

Otto_the_Autopilot 2026-03-08 20:03

It's a cybercab testing.  These vehicles have steering wheels and are driving around for validation of the vehicle, not necessary autonomy.  Most manufacturers will extensively drive new models in all sorts of conditions and put on as many miles as possible to identify issues before production begins.

savedatheist 2026-03-08 21:52

Cybercab. Starting production now.

Fun_Muscle9399 2026-03-08 23:09

The panel gaps look horrid from 30’ away. I get that this is a prototype, but damn.

Economy-Object8214 2026-03-09 00:50

Just now saw one of these in Palo Alto, driving round with a tall black antenna/mast on top of the roof. Validation sensors?

but-first 2026-03-09 02:49

Damn thats sick

Raymondator 2026-03-09 04:17

Is it really a tesla if it doesnt have panel gaps big enough to fit your thumb through?

hockeythug 2026-03-09 04:42

It’s on vacation from Austin. Leave it alone! They need breaks too.

Main_Toe_5349 2026-03-09 07:12

It's a cybercab an offspring of the cybertruck

Soff10 2026-03-09 07:47

Do you think Tesla will just add a steering wheel and call it the model 2 or model Q?

yetiflask 2026-03-09 16:03

This exact car? Hope not. A different shell on the same udnerlying platform for $25k. I fucking hope so. That'd be a money-printer. But Elon's mind's elsewhere, but I hope he does it.

Soff10 2026-03-09 16:14

I thought it looked cool as is. But I’m buying a Slate next.

Capable-Reach7509 2026-03-09 17:21

I can’t believe it’s on public roads without a steering wheel

yetiflask 2026-03-09 17:41

To me it does look nice personally, but not as a personal car though. As for Slate, their SUV does look funky kind of good. I'd buy it if I had a use for it.

Pic889 2026-03-09 23:02

They won't start meaningful production of the Cybercab until unsupervised FSD is really solved. And no, a couple of vehicles in a very small geo-fenced area in Austin doesn't count as "solved". There is no point in having tons of Cybercabs without truly unsupervised FSD software to load onto them.

zippy9002 2026-03-09 23:48

This one has side mirrors and a steering wheel

LanPhantom 2026-03-10 00:06

I’m wondering how the are going to deal with the snow. My HW3 FSD looks at snow chunks in the road and see rocks. Tries to avoid them. Might make for an interesting ride.

R5Jockey 2026-03-10 00:29

Jesus. Look at the panel gaps on that bad boy.

JrbWheaton 2026-03-10 00:43

It’s not

Soff10 2026-03-10 00:47

I have a model 3. I like having an electric vehicle. But I dislike all the unnecessary stuff and spyware. The sensors are very annoying. And the central screen. I bought aftermarket gauges so I see my speed right above the steering wheel. I would buy the Slate over any EV out there. I had a K-5 Blazer and S-10 Blazer in my youth. So it reminds me a bit about those. I may buy one and wait for an AWD version.

figers 2026-03-10 00:53

Would want a back window before I bought it

Pic889 2026-03-10 01:10

Yes, that's how you know it's a prototype. I replied to the "starting production now" comment. Even if "production" starts, it'll be a couple dozen vehicles to show to the press and do FSD trials in that tiny geo-fenced area in Austin, it doesn't make sense to mass produce the Cybercab before true unsupervised FSD exists.

0range-duche-B4G 2026-03-10 01:14

I work in Palo Alto Ca. Seen them more than a few times. Still ugly! The Gold doesn’t help. It might look better with a different wrap.

yetiflask 2026-03-10 01:56

I can see that. As for spyware, I'd actualy trust Tesla more than other brands. All brands track and leak your data, except that Tesla is the only company I'd trust to have slightly better cyber security.

McD-Szechuan 2026-03-10 02:39

HW3 teslas drive straight through railroad crossing gates

savedatheist 2026-03-10 02:41

Production is like a freight train with suppliers all lined up with inertia. You don’t just stop it.

savedatheist 2026-03-10 02:43

Did you see the Cybertruck protos? They were a mess but production is tight.

Pic889 2026-03-10 03:37

Yes, that's my point, there won't be any mass production until true unsupervised FSD exists. Until then, they may produce a couple dozen Cybercabs to show to the press and claim "production", but it won't be mass production.

UniversalDegeneracy 2026-03-10 04:13

Gives me breaking bad vibes.

Capable-Reach7509 2026-03-10 04:43

Am I missing something?

Fun_Muscle9399 2026-03-10 09:37

No, but the production version is pretty bad. I can only imagine how bad the prototypes looked.

Capable-Reach7509 2026-03-10 12:52

So the cab will have a steering wheel?

zmagickz 2026-03-10 15:22

They plan to remove it after passing regulation, so yp to you to decide if you believe in that

Capable-Reach7509 2026-03-10 15:23

Thanks for letting me know! I just figured they were already out crusin’

JrbWheaton 2026-03-10 15:33

That could still take many years if ever. This thing is basically a one person taxi. The TAM is tiny for a car like this

Present-Ad-9598 2026-03-10 19:06

No

jasonsong86 2026-03-11 01:51

Cybercab.

Immediate_Ad_4662 2026-03-11 03:06

How fast was it going? Did it stay in the middle lane the whole time? IE was it being conservative in its behavior?

Immediate_Ad_4662 2026-03-11 03:10

So is there no back seat? The passenger sits up front?

JrbWheaton 2026-03-11 03:10

Correct. It has a pretty big trunk though

ShowMacaque 2026-03-11 07:01

That's how I know Unsupervised will not be anytime soon. They need to "Solve" FSD, then get around the legality of it, then make sure it works on HW4 and THEN go through the whole it may/may not work on HW3 even though it was promised to HW3 buyers.

williamtech814 2026-03-11 09:42

Would love to see Robotaxi’s pop up in Massachusetts

SureAnnual7884 2026-03-11 15:04

Did you see a steering wheel

dinga617 2026-03-13 03:30

There’s been a few in and around the service center at the northshore mall https://preview.redd.it/6p1dqdqcfqog1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36f990e0eda1a2f245ad3462314f5e26af8b1411

chiefVetinari 2026-03-13 03:34

Funny, I was actually on the way to that mall!

dinga617 2026-03-13 03:35

You’ll see them around there. The employees at the service center were very vague when I asked about them
