I have been seeing a few US government plated Teslas as well recently. Have they been silently selling all their unsold inventory to Uncle Sam or are these just one off purchases?

Valaj369 2026-02-05 03:36

Newport, KY PD has the MY Juniper as well.

jwindhall 2026-02-05 03:58

So does the little town of Crested Butte, Colorado.

Wiish123 2026-02-05 04:17

I think more and more departments are interested. Less wear, start the day with a full charge without going to the gas station. Incredible acceleration, getting rid of the laptop in the car and just use the screen. Heavy and sturdy vehicles. Honestly the Model Y just makes a lot of sense as a police vehicle.

rlap38 2026-02-05 04:30

Fremont has had MY since 2022.

Mundane_Engineer_550 2026-02-05 04:45

No getting away now lol

Ancient_Result7021 2026-02-05 04:49

I am surprised I haven't seen the "Tesla stopping to charge in the middle of police chase" moron comment

Ok-Improvement-3670 2026-02-05 04:53

Saving gas and driving American.

doublespeak5528 2026-02-05 04:58

Unsold inventory? What are you talking about

TelevisionMission941 2026-02-05 05:29

I saw this on my way to work this morning too!

Low-Inspection-6099 2026-02-05 05:29

I'm more interested if the cops actually buy a Tesla (or any other EV) as their personal car. It would be nice if it influenced their decisions.

ronntron 2026-02-05 05:40

I know 2 cops with Teslas. They use them to commute. Their other vehicles are trucks. And, one of them have Tesla solar as well. One is SVL PD and the other SC PD. But not sure if they have police Tesla vehicles in those departments.

xuon27 2026-02-05 05:56

He must hate Elon so he thinks that Tesla is going under.

Ancient_Result7021 2026-02-05 05:57

I don’t get the downvotes, I see those comments all the time when someone posts a Tesla Police car on Facebook

Dr_Pippin 2026-02-05 15:29

No, this is police departments realizing how good of a choice an EV is for their usage. Even as far back as 2019 Model 3s have been used for patrol vehicles, with significant savings over the lifetime of the vehicle compared to Chargers, etc. https://dailyjournal.net/2020/12/02/bargersville_police_to_add_two_teslas_officers_start_work_on_new_station/

Saintcanuck 2026-02-06 05:06

Likely, this driver who sped is from out of town. Everyone knows Teslas ooutrun every other car

edum18 2026-02-08 14:02

Whats wrong with this comment section?

iiiGVXDiii 2026-02-08 16:09

Downvote bots? This is so bizarre

castille 2026-02-08 16:12

Police chases are on the whole more dangerous than the event causing them, anyway. We can track people significantly more safely, but its not as fun for a group of oversized toddlers who need to feel that they are the only thing separating man from anarchy.

Mas1021 2026-02-08 16:44

People really cant resist using the same excuse everyone else has to why they shouldn't use teslas.

dextroz 2026-02-08 16:46

That is kind of stupid because Teslas are so goddamn delicate. I would never put them into anything beyond a simple computer or Highway. Only long drives.

uuid-already-exists 2026-02-08 16:58

Tesla makes sense for police work. Lots of idle time, great acceleration, easy to charge each night or during a lunch break if seeing heavy use that day. They still need to be modified, but that’s the case for all police vehicles. Bull bars, reinforcement in places, lights/sirens, radios, custody enclosure, easy clean back seats, etc. Sometimes they will even put ballistic panels in the door frame too. Most firearms will easily fire cleanly through regular car doors and the rest of the body of the car. The only “safe” place is behind the engine compartment and Tesla don’t even have that without added armoring.

uuid-already-exists 2026-02-08 17:04

The amount of bots on Reddit is just ridiculous. Reddit doesn’t want to fix it because it would hurt their engagement scores. Hardly anything here anymore is genuine.

Nitro187 2026-02-08 17:15

💯

PositiveEnergyMatter 2026-02-08 17:54

If there was ever a post to prove the existence of downvote bots, its this one

pavanforest 2026-02-08 18:04

It’s been a while since Fremont PD stated using couple of Tesla as fleet vehicles, I wonder any PD has been using Cyber Truck.

ThatRocketSurgeon 2026-02-08 18:16

Dead internet theory

BermudaWololo 2026-02-08 19:17

It’s so evil of manufacturers to sell their unsold merchandise to customers!

Prize-Enthusiasm3828 2026-02-08 19:25

dont know why but some cant digest ev is the future .this is awesome

thinkbox 2026-02-08 19:46

The people willing to run from police are the ones creating the danger. Cops can’t chance if they don’t run. Don’t play pretend.

castille 2026-02-08 19:48

Scientific studies have borne out that not chasing them is safer than chasing them.

paulohbear 2026-02-08 19:53

Outrun *this* MoFo! 🤪😉🤣😆

Taylooor 2026-02-08 20:17

Lol, why is this down voted? It’s true and funny. maybe people are taking the comment a little too literally?

Taylooor 2026-02-08 20:18

Why is this downloaded? Is this sub plagued by haters?

Taylooor 2026-02-08 20:19

OK, this explains it. Thought maybe we were being brigaded.

Taylooor 2026-02-08 20:22

I saw a Tesla Caltrans car yesterday. Made me happy. Possibly partially because I was en route to a free Caltrans DC fast charger

cabs2kinkos 2026-02-08 21:22

Pasadena cops also

-eccentric- 2026-02-08 21:25

Given how awful teslas tend to be when abused (see loaners) I highly doubt it.

thinkbox 2026-02-09 00:08

Oh, science said we should let criminals go? Wow. When has science been wrong?

fredean01 2026-02-09 01:00

And not attempting to arrest them is also safer than attempting to arrest them. Shocker.

GucciTokes 2026-02-09 02:30

now they can safely type on their computer while driving 🤣

RojerLockless 2026-02-09 02:32

Thats cool

rlap38 2026-02-09 02:39

Truckvault offers a model Y gun vault which covers the entire rear of the trunk area and bolts to the frame.

theotherharper 2026-02-09 03:28

I am honestly surprised Tesla is having such trouble moving Cybertrucks. It isn't like you order a car and they add 1 more car to today's production schedule. Normally automakers plan production quite far in advance, and the “how many to produce” knob doesn't have much freedom of movement, becuase once the parts arrive from vendors it is actually cheaper to build the car than not build it. So it happens all the time that automakers wind up with TENS OF THOUSANDS of unsold cars. And they push dealers to move that model, but mostly they resolve it in fleet sales by pitching good deals, and that includes sales to rental car agencies. So I would have completely expected Cybertrucks to just show up in all sorts of fleet service, basically any company or municipality or state with an inkling to go electric. I even expected them to retool a new back half and go after the Postal jeep market, since many don’t actually need right hand drive. There's always a way to move a car.

theotherharper 2026-02-09 03:33

> lots of idle time That describes SOOOOO many vehicles it isn't even funny. Railroad hy-rail trucks that do track inspection. It's 75 MPH to a crossing to set on rail, then 30 MPH to a work area, then lots of hurry up and wait, going 5 MPH stopping every 200 feet to climb out, futzing around for 1-15 minutes and you leave the truck running because you want climate when you get back in. All that uses gallons of gas, it would take just a couple kWH electric.

jebidiaGA 2026-02-09 05:11

Model Y is the best

SwagginOnADragon69 2026-02-09 06:26

Facts

icy1007 2026-02-09 07:08

They’ve had them for a while.

brazucadomundo 2026-02-09 07:54

They had a Model S since 2015.

Schnitzhole 2026-02-09 13:50

Honestly it seems like it’s an ideal platform for cops. Not to mention the acceleration and handling benefits. [Here’s a good video of some cops being surprised how good a model Y is after doing training with it.](https://youtu.be/D60eM_l_GWQ?si=4dtHCpJbYzIHfV_k)

Ljhughes8 2026-02-09 14:23

Las vegas has 10

Mundane_Engineer_550 2026-02-09 14:29

It's Reddit lol 23 downvoted because think they can get away since ITs eLeCtRIc 😂

Taylooor 2026-02-09 15:39

Apparently it’s downvote bots. There was a bunch of chatter about it elsewhere in the comments

aguila0515 2026-02-09 18:00

Majority of their EV’s are tesla’s but are slowly bringing in a few Rivians and GMC Sierra’s

dantrooper4559 2026-02-09 18:06

I've see CalTrans Rivians

Ok_Individual4716 2026-02-10 06:13

If all PDs across America switch to Tesla fleets, police chases wouldn’t exist anymore. With the acceleration of a Tesla, the chase would be over before it even starts

Mundane_Engineer_550 2026-02-10 07:44

I didn't even know that was a thing 💀

Severe-Object6650 2026-02-10 16:05

I think quite a few police departments have them now. It makes total since when you have a fleet of vehicles to maintain. Especially police cars which are idling a lot of the day, and hard accelerating to catch up to people they need to stop -- all stuff that spikes maintenance costs for ICE vehicles and don't affect electric vehicles at all.

Severe-Object6650 2026-02-10 16:07

Not to mention maintenance and repairs -- idling isn't great for a gas engine -- doesn't affect an EV at all.

rideincircles 2026-02-11 14:07

I'm surprised that they haven't marketed cybertruck as police vehicles.

UseAlternative7984 2026-02-13 03:53

Would we say this is more efficient than the regular cop cars?

ThatOneRedditRando 2026-02-13 16:08

I don’t get it, where does it say he was trying to outrun a cop? Lol you don’t just speed bc you want to outrun cops 😂

sorrowdemonica 2026-02-13 22:20

tbh, it makes the most logical sense for them to.. Patrol cop's main duties include sitting idle in a parking lot or side of the road for hours on end each day.. so an EV is perfect for idling, especially while powering in-cab electronics, climate, and ready to take off after a traffic offender or respond to a call in a moment's notice, versus burning through literal gallons of expensive California gas while just idling while wearing down all the mechanical parts even while idling.. Considering the milage a cop covers over an average shift, especially in a quiet suburb, an electric vehicle makes most logical sense and fills all their needs, and should be the best cost option from the electricity vs gas price savings to the savings from lack of wear and tear and maintenance on mechanical parts and probably less service on wear items and fluids changes required to keep them operational.
