Non-Tesla Supercharger NACS requires CCS compatibility.

From a medium-long term perspective, CCS will be phased out in favor of NACS (Tesla charge port) since it's been accepted as the standard by the majority of EV manufacturers moving forward. Should expect 3rd party charging stations to adapt to NACS if they want people to be able to plug-in!

Depends if you ever want to use 3rd party superchargers. Almost all if not every US automaker is moving to NACS which uses CCS protocol. They’ll be everywhere, and Tesla may slow down expansion of their own network.
I drove round trip across the country and didn’t NEED 3rd party superchargers, however while quite convenient, they were more expensive (+50-100%).

Edit: I missed that it was in Canadian dollars. The Tesla Website lists it at $230 for USD

That’s the USD price. OP says this is a Canadian dollar quote. $230USD is almost exactly the quoted $315CAD.

This is not port/adapter compatibility. This is 3rd party dc charging compatibility. It will become very recommended as non-Tesla fast chargers with NACS ports begin to outnumber supercharger stations.
ie, to charge at an Ionna or Rivian station you need this upgrade

Yes. NACS, the new standard, isn't the same as the Tesla Proprietary Standard V2 superchargers use, and actually use CCS communication to charge. You will need it if you're charging on any tesla plug not from tesla

Well this is good news for me. I live near Quebec and couldn't really justify the upgrade to my 2020 model 3 just to once in a blue moon charge there. Maybe next time I need to service something I'll get it done.

That price is still stupid high imo. The ECU is only about $100 and takes all of 10 minutes with a standard screwdriver to install on the Y. A quick service mode firmware reload later and Bob’s your uncle.

NACS uses CCS protocol with Tesla plug.
Older Tesla cars use a Chademo-like protocol with Tesla plug.

Yup, I just noticed that earlier this week and have an appointment for tomorrow.
Be forewarned though, my service center still had the old cost in their system so it took a bit of Tesla support help to get it resolved.

Still need to pay for the tech's time, the cost of the service bay and service center, plus all the utilities and taxes and everything else required to run a profitable business. If this was a GM part, they'd be charging $500 for the part alone plus install...

I don’t know how it is in North America with NACS, but in Australia, all V3 and later Superchargers only have CCS2 plugs and require the retrofit.
I got a 2018 Model X done mid-January, the estimate initially came in at over AU$1,300 but was revised the day before my service to AU$480, which seems somewhat consistent with OP.

Just because you or I can do it, most people don't even know how to change the bit on a screwdriver to match the screw. So to them, it makes sense to pay for that overhead. Which proves my point. $315 might sound like a lot to you, but to someone who has no clue what to do (or no interest in learning), paying the $$$$ is worth it to them.
I always break it down into what it costs me per hour to work on something myself. I bill out at $225/hour. If I can get something done for $79 for an hour's work by someone else, it's worth my money.
My post just proves you have no clue how a business makes money or how it attracts customers.

Yeah. So I completely understand where you’re coming from and fully acknowledge the accuracy of what you’re saying. You’re not wrong. But…
I still don’t see where it connects to an opinion that a price is high versus the amount of work and skill involved. You are arguing from the assumption that Teslas entire business model is built around this one task. In which case I would fully agree. Techs to pay, buildings to maintain, taxes, so on. Absolutely. But it’s not. On this task the price remains high in contrast to the cumulative amount of specialized skills and human labor time required to accomplish said task.
Furthermore taking into consideration that the vehicles which need this modification only require it due to Tesla silently omitting the necessary hardware in the first place from the ‘21 chip shortage, it could also be argued this modification should not be profit driven. It should cover baseline costs and nothing more. I already paid for the ability when I bought the car. I don’t like it but fine I’ll buy the parts. I’ll be damned if I’ll pay 1.5h labor for a 10minute job, 30 if you task the new guy at a lower rate to do it. Hell, physically removing and replacing the entire charge port assembly on the Y is FRT at 0.66.

But for this retrofit, we’re pulling down the flexible carpet trim behind the charge port with our fingers, using a 10mm socket on a single retaining bolt, replacing a module a little bigger than a deck of cards, replacing trim, and clicking reinstall in service mode.
For what it’s worth, up until a few months ago I was the assistant service manager at a mid sized Freightliner truck dealership, so I am fully aware of the “hidden” costs for which you so rightly advocate. I decided to leave the office after a few years and get back out into the field which is why I now have random bits of free time to needlessly argue with people on the internet again. ✌️
