Small but clever Tesla app detail I just noticed

lavoid12 | 2026-01-27 23:05 | 407 views

Just noticed something cool in the Tesla app that I hadn’t seen mentioned before. On the Location row, the little arrow icon actually acts like a compass. It points in the real-world direction your car is facing. So at a glance, you can tell which way the car is oriented, not just where it is. Kind of brilliant. One of those subtle UI touches that makes the app feel thoughtfully designed.

Thanks didn’t know this!

cashnicholas 2026-01-28 00:31

Didn’t know that. Sweet

CyberOvitron 2026-01-28 00:39

First time I see this. Thanks, OP.

adrawrjdet 2026-01-28 00:45

Wonder if there's anyway to get this on a widget.

lavoid12 2026-01-28 00:47

Sorry. Just wanted to share. Apologies, I didn’t know others had posted.

incredible69 2026-01-28 00:50

Android only ?

Andorion 2026-01-28 00:53

No it works on iOS too, you may need to enable location services for the app if you’re not seeing it?

Decent-Gas-7042 2026-01-28 00:54

News to me. Very cool

CommonerChaos 2026-01-28 00:57

Just tried it and wow, that's actually crazy. Thanks for the tidbit.

Low-Imagination8692 2026-01-28 01:01

Are you saying it points in the direction your car is facing, or points you to your car? It looks like mine actually points to my car. If I move my phone around, the arrow moves but stays pointed at the car.

neverincompliance 2026-01-28 01:03

wow! cool

jjp48 2026-01-28 01:04

Points to your car* not the direction your car is facing

lavoid12 2026-01-28 01:07

It points to your car.

lavoid12 2026-01-28 01:09

Now that’s a feature request.

jml5791 2026-01-28 01:15

you might need to update your post

AmbitionHonest7734 2026-01-28 01:19

They just added that somewhat recently.

cybertruckboat 2026-01-28 01:25

Mine is just a normal arrow. I wonder if I'm missing an update.

digitaldisorder_ 2026-01-28 01:28

Neat!

XxBoognishxX 2026-01-28 01:31

It’s working on my wife’s 2025 but not my 2023. Both HW4 not sure why

DaSandman78 2026-01-28 01:41

This was posted here a week ago but yeah, its nice :)

Super-Kirby 2026-01-28 01:46

I just learned this, thank you!

jeho187 2026-01-28 02:01

Just tried it. So cool!

JFreader 2026-01-28 02:08

Not on mine. Maybe not on 2018 Model 3.

jaredthegeek 2026-01-28 02:18

It’s a recent update.

ikeepcomingbackhaha 2026-01-28 02:20

WHY ARE YOU NOT TERMINALLY ONLINE? HAVE YOU NOT BEEN CHECKING REDDIT AND THIS SUB ON A QUARTER-HOURLY BASIS!?

johnnyma45 2026-01-28 02:24

Mine doesnt either. ‘21 M3P HW3. Wonder if it’s only on newer cars

IMissDrYfantis 2026-01-28 02:29

I love it

Ordinary-Cake8510 2026-01-28 02:32

Doesn’t always point correctly. Had mine point correct the first day and then a few days ago, noticed it pointed in the opposite direction even though I was in the same room and facing the same way. Not a big deal but, just in case someone depends on it, might be wrong at times.

icy1007 2026-01-28 02:43

It SOMETIMES points towards your car. I’ve also seen it point the completely wrong direction.

dellfanboy 2026-01-28 02:51

It only points when close to the car within range.

Certain-Tennis8555 2026-01-28 02:59

So I had to check this. It works with 2 vehicles that are parked nearby. But I have a third vehicle that is currently parked 870 miles away and the arrow feature does not work for that car.

usdaprime 2026-01-28 03:34

Wow thank you I wasn’t aware of that

tonybaroneee 2026-01-28 03:38

Nope, ‘21 MY HW3 and I have it.

Badvertisement 2026-01-28 03:52

it's not, it works on our 2018 M3

Badvertisement 2026-01-28 03:53

yeah, within the past month and a half https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/3406/tesla-adds-vehicle-locator-feature-to-tesla-app

hesdeadtired 2026-01-28 04:10

Just saw this today! Such a tasty little UI element!

Adventurous_Box_6149 2026-01-28 04:19

I was trying to find my car at the airport and it was completely wrong lol

Ordinary-Cake8510 2026-01-28 04:21

I remembered where I parked at the airport and was checking the app and it was right. It was only wrong one day at work but I haven’t checked again. Just found it funny that it was right the first day and wrong the next time I checked.

Adventurous_Box_6149 2026-01-28 04:24

Yeah generally it's pretty good. I was in an underground garage so maybe that's why

Askew123 2026-01-28 04:44

Mine always points the wrong way...

Aerbis 2026-01-28 04:50

Freaking Brilliant!

Rfreaky 2026-01-28 05:36

But it never does for me. It always points in a random other redirection for some reason.

GunGeekATX 2026-01-28 06:58

I have both my car (2020 Model 3) and my wife's car (2023 Model Y) parked next to each other in the driveway. My app shows my car with a standard up arrow and says "nearby", while my wife's car has the arrow pointing the correct direction and the number of feet away. Not sure why they're different, just an observation.

RedyAu 2026-01-28 08:41

You probably have to calibrate your compass. Do this anytime and watch how the accuracy improves instantly :) https://i.redd.it/fjeod72zy1gg1.gif

newreconstruction 2026-01-28 08:44

This.

matttopotamus 2026-01-28 10:53

Bad ass. Had no idea and just tested. It’s correct.

BlankStarBE 2026-01-28 13:18

Maybe not the right phone. Car is less relevant as it shares its gps location to the app.

BlankStarBE 2026-01-28 13:19

Phone might be the culprit, not the car.

JFreader 2026-01-28 13:23

I have the dec 29 2025 update on android

JinSecFlex 2026-01-28 14:54

You’re trying to make me look silly aren’t you

deeperest 2026-01-28 15:04

You can also do it by pretending you're holding a salt shaker in a closed fist, and you're trying to sprinkle some on your tongue.

JinSecFlex 2026-01-28 15:25

You should use your other hand and hold it underneath your jaw in a catchers mitt position just in case the phone drops too

deeperest 2026-01-28 15:27

I prefer to pull repeatedly on my imaginary tail, but yours makes a lot of sense from a safety standpoint. Good tip!

ilikepstrophies 2026-01-28 15:42

What does knowing what direction your car is facing do for you exactly?

Former-Discount4279 2026-01-28 15:52

Strange, seems my car is in the center of the Earth.

thatdudenick 2026-01-28 17:25

Just noticed this the other day.

BlankStarBE 2026-01-28 17:29

It’s a technical thing. Electronic compass in the phone.

Significant-Tie-7970 2026-01-28 19:24

This is correct. More impressively, this is not a static image and reacts dynamicly. Pointing my phone in a different direction and the arrow is staying fixed on my car. Very handy...

B0xyblue 2026-01-28 20:49

If it’s pointing up, Elon is having another kid?

Virgo_Messier-49 2026-01-28 22:52

No you can't hold the tip, you must pull on the shaft repeatedly!

S3kelman 2026-01-28 23:11

pretty sure that the range doesn't matter, I saw that arrow from across the city

califoneChris 2026-01-29 17:03

You have to be nearby your car.

SpikeX 2026-01-29 18:21

More specifically, it points to where your car is relative to your phone. Meaning, hold your phone out, turn yourself until the arrow is straight up, walk forward, there’s your car.

SpikeX 2026-01-29 18:22

I just updated to 4.53.1 (iOS) and it had it (my previous version did not).

Mind = Blown

zutpetje 2026-02-01 03:00

It works when I’m standing next to my car.

Saintcanuck 2026-02-08 05:51

Cool tip, thanks
