Tesla has updated the new vehicle warranty in NZ and Australia to 5 years and unlimited distance

Matt_NZ | 2026-01-09 01:42 | 313 views

The drive train warranty remains the same - 8 years/192,000km. This is likely to remain competitive with the warranties provided by the plethora of Chinese EV makers

That’s pretty sick - America will never get this unfortunately.

lorrenzo 2026-01-09 02:04

Yeah 5 years would have been nice, currently on year 5 and got a few things repaired

Feeling_Metal_8839 2026-01-09 02:14

What’s that in miles?

Matt_NZ 2026-01-09 02:15

KvasShmas 2026-01-09 02:16

Unlimited.

purejawgz 2026-01-09 02:18

Annoyed that there’s no grandfathering in. Picked up a MY mid December there will be no recourse

damonlebeouf 2026-01-09 02:28

holy crap… unlimited milage?! that’s awesome!!!

MeinWaffles 2026-01-09 02:29

Negative infinity actually, since they’re upside-down

cac2573 2026-01-09 02:30

Do you mean retroactive? Your use of grandfathering doesn’t make sense in this context.

EVMad 2026-01-09 02:37

I'm coming up on year 7 and the only thing it has needed is one of the bushes in the rear suspension was getting weak so it failed it's WOF. Tesla replaced both for $500 fitted and I had them do a few other bits and pieces due to the high mileage. I've never had a car this robust and reliable before, especially not the euro boxes but even the Japanese cars weren't this good. Basic maintenance only, wiper blades, cabin filter and tyres. That's it. Nice to have unlimited mileage warranty and an extra year but really it's an easy bet for Tesla because their cars are really well designed and built, even mine which was made in Fremont CA and thus consider crap by reddit, and yet here we are.

corys00 2026-01-09 02:41

Cries after traveling 51,000 miles in 2.5 years. :/

lorrenzo 2026-01-09 02:49

I had a squeaky suspension repaired, and a squeaky car seat getting repaired this month. Looking online seems like a common issue that just happened, would be nice not to have to spend $800 for those two repairs. Also last year I had a batery that's not charging, while parking in the garage. Tesla replaced the battery for me , can't imagine how much it would cost if the battery wasn't in warranty. Many Chinese and Korean counterparts in Aus are offering 8 years warranty, so no wonder Tesla is getting a bit reactive.

EVMad 2026-01-09 02:55

Yeah, makes sense to get a longer warranty but I've never had a car from any manufacturer that didn't have some faults. The thing I like about Tesla is their repairs are really well priced, very unlike say BMW who are horrendously expensive for any post-warranty work. I used BMWorkshop for mine and it was still hellishly expensive, but for my Model 3 I'm happy to just let Tesla do the work because I don't think anyone else could do the work better and cheaper.

lorrenzo 2026-01-09 03:06

Yeah BMW and Merc are notoriously for their out of warranty repairs. My previous car was a Honda and it didn't have any issues after 8 years of owning it. I do agree Tesla service is pretty good and efficient, hassle free and they will give you a loaner or Uber credit unlike most other car makers.

MDInvesting 2026-01-09 03:07

A larger infinity.

EVMad 2026-01-09 03:10

I had a Mazda which was pretty good but stuff like brake discs and pads were expensive and needed doing a couple of times during my ownership. People forget how much stuff like that costs, $1500 at Midas to get the four discs and pads replaced. Oil changes, belt changes, filters, it goes on and on. I've been driving EVs for 10 years now so I have a pretty good idea of what needs doing and it's almost nothing compared with a fossil car. Going years without needing to have work done is just amazing, and then not getting dinged for big money when work is needed, chef's kiss. Mwa!

FederalDot7819 2026-01-09 03:12

I’m hoping ACCC will assist with any disputes

[deleted] 2026-01-09 03:13

If they did — which they could — it would just be an additional cost that will increase resale value. Also, would make their brand look dope after a while. They have an incentive to build great cars, and the owner (because there is a warranty) to maintain them (incentive to make the car brand great, even if +6 years old).

PraiseTalos66012 2026-01-09 03:32

Not for commercial use though as it says underneath. Which includes any gig work. 99% of people not using it for commercial will hit the years before the mileage anyway.

cavey00 2026-01-09 03:34

Just change your odometer to kilometers. Check and mate!

Matt_NZ 2026-01-09 03:35

Commercial warranty has also been updated to 5 years or 150,000km

PraiseTalos66012 2026-01-09 03:38

Ohh there's actually a commercial one? I was assuming based on the asterix there that the warranty was either void or the old mileage. That's actually really good for the basic vehicle warranty.

Voidfang_Investments 2026-01-09 03:47

wtf is a kilometer.meme

ChuqTas 2026-01-09 04:00

My Model 3 will be 4 years old in April (and probably going to hit 80,000km just before then) and to be honest, an extra year would be nice... But yeah, I probably don’t have as much recourse as you do!

Matt_NZ 2026-01-09 04:03

Yeah this is the asterisk https://preview.redd.it/t140ywjsz8cg1.jpeg?width=1206&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f0e93ea11e2e078db386a30c580710b83f057de4

TAoie83 2026-01-09 04:11

Yea, they’re also willing to bundle solar. 😆

purejawgz 2026-01-09 04:20

Either way. Still annoyed

Gigtooo 2026-01-09 07:48

They really want us all to „just buy a HW4 if u don’t have one“ Tesla…

bakerzdosen 2026-01-09 07:57

Yeah, at 110+ miles/day commuting, our MY is on track to clear 165k miles before it’s paid off at 72 months… Still, it’s good to know they trust it enough to warranty it somewhere in the world.

shamberra 2026-01-09 09:30

I suspect if you pushed it, our consumer laws would very likely side with you up to that 5 year mark. It's the same vehicle as what you'd receive if your delivery date was today, and I'm sure it's essentially the same price too. So if you'd expect 5 years for such a vehicle (which Tesla themselves evidently do), I'm very confident fair trading/ACCC would agree with you. And Tesla.

Quick_Possibility_99 2026-01-09 10:30

All it means the compition vechiles are crap.

InertiaCreeping 2026-01-09 11:08

My local repairer (Tesla approved) had my WOF done, failed due to the bushings. Replacement arms (?) cost like $2k - only after the job was done do we (repairer and I) find out that Tesla DO replacr bushings, but the tool is a "service centre only" part. Repairer lost his shit at them, and now has the tool. I LOVE my car but I swear to god Tesla NZ are the biggest sacks of shit when it comes to servicing and warranty. 2020 Fremont 3, Hawkew Bay.

[deleted] 2026-01-09 11:10

Still not worth it if you need to wait 2 months without a car for an appointment to fix something under warranty.

InertiaCreeping 2026-01-09 11:11

You are absolutely correct. Had a five year old AP computer replaced for free. Took a while and some disputes tribunal threats but they eventually caved

Matt_NZ 2026-01-09 11:53

That wasn't my warranty (or even post warranty) experience with the service centres here in NZ

[deleted] 2026-01-09 16:25

Thats awesome then. 20 days for an appointment and another month for a front bumper and frunk to arrive in Europe. 2 months without a car for what is a minor repair. Had I had any european car I d have it back in less than a week.

EVMad 2026-01-09 18:00

Yeah, I checked online and was expecting a bill in the $2-3K range because online info said they didn't just replace the bushes. I think it must have been a change in procedure. My experience with Tesla NZ has been incredibly positive, sorry for your experience. 2019 Fremont 3, Auckland.

EVMad 2026-01-09 19:41

Tesla phoned me when the highland came out offering a trade-in from my 2019 with FSD. I said no way, nothing wrong with the current car and I'm expecting them to upgrade it to HW4 to get full unsupervised FSD, no way I'm paying more. Will be interesting to see how well HW3 with FSD 14 lite runs (I work with AI a fair bit and know that distilled models can still work well on older kit with smaller memory) but they will need to put in new hardware at some point and there are signs that retrofits are coming as there's now an option to change out the FSD hardware specification in the toolbox. Patience is the name of the game.

InertiaCreeping 2026-01-09 20:54

for the record, I have three teslas sitting in my driveway, heh. It’s just bothers me that there are no servicing options or warranty work in Hawkes Bay. They used to be a mobile service, but he quit due to poor working conditions after a couple of years. It’s just a shame.

GucciTokes 2026-01-10 02:27

amazing

EVMad 2026-01-10 03:35

Yeah, bit of an issue if there's no options. Closest to you are Hamilton and Wellington neither of which are near. I've moved out of Auckland since my last work was done so I guess I'll see how I get on but I would totally buy another regardless of how much I dislike that nonce Musk because the cars, service and charging network are leagues ahead of the competition despite how much people go on about how great BYD etc are.

Gigtooo 2026-01-11 10:35

I also don’t understand what’s the „big deal“ on teslas side would be to just upgrade the hw. I am 99% sure that they wouldn’t even need to change the cameras. Just the main unit itself and done. For what did we pay over 8K if not even a mid gaming rig is in that price. I also would be up to pay 1k for the upgrade if they would want that. But no shot I am gone buy an hw4 vehicle if that is already said to be to low spec.

EVMad 2026-01-11 17:39

Just like upgrading a GPU in a gaming rig, you need to be sure the PSU is capable of handling the upgrade. The problem is the AI4 computer uses a significantly more juice and has different cooling simply due to the bigger silicon. They need to reduce those needs to fit within the HW3 cars, not impossible but not something they want to (or should) do until they're sure they can achieve unsupervised FSD on HW4. It looks more and more like it is possible now but AI5 hardware custom designed for HW3 cars would give more headroom. FSD14 lite will get us something although I wish Tesla would just release FSD12 in NZ/Aus for HW3 as that seems to run well enough in the US but it's also a big task to train the models. I would also like to be able to swap out the Intel Atom MCU at some point but that's a whole different story.

Gigtooo 2026-01-11 18:47

Wait… FSD12 isn’t even out in Austria?? Oh boy… Me in the eu then HW3 2022 M3 will not see FSD then in the next 5 years…

Captain_Alaska 2026-01-11 23:01

Not sure how you’d come to that conclusion as basically everyone was offering better warranties. This still isn’t close to class leading, MG for example is 7 years unlimited.

EVMad 2026-01-11 23:09

Yeah, I bought FSD back in 2019 here in NZ. They released FSD13 (no 14 here yet for anyone) for HW4 cars back in October but not for HW3. They could have made a v12 model for us but they haven't yet, although they are pulling huge amounts of driving data from the fleet so we'll either get v12 at some point or they'll roll out 14 lite but it will probably not be until after HW3 gets that in the US.
