Regardless of what and whatever, the people at Tesla makes really good vehicles

Been driving this for +5000km, it is very good :)

True that. And despite all of the backlash against EM (much of which I think well-founded) I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Tesla (planning to trade my 2018 M3 in on a refreshed M3 next year).

naturallyfatale 2025-05-17 16:46

I mean I’m a Tesla owner but be careful with this statement. I could see someone else replying with something like: “Regardless of hitlers views those train systems and highway systems were really good”

[deleted] 2025-05-17 16:47

They really do, it's unfortunate all the politics are completely overshadowing the release of the new Y it's a truly amazing vehicle (as is my 24 model S).

Honestly, ioniq 5 and a number of Chinese brands completely outdo it already. I think once (or if) Chinese brands make it to the US at the rate they are taking Europe, you'll have a different opinion. Acceleration though, I gotta give that to Tesla, but do you need escape velocity in you car?

marlinspike 2025-05-17 17:13

They do, and theirs are the only ones that keep getting better the days after you buy them with OTA upgrades. I barely ever drive myself — FSD is my pilot and I’m the copilot. Tesla still has their groove. Their investors believe in the vision and anyone not on board isn’t bought in to TSLA. That’s how it should be for this company. They don’t seek to become another GM. The vision is bigger than that.

I never understood the hate before all the DOGE stuff. Tesla was the first new American Automaker outside of the big 2, which people love to hate on. Tesla made a name for itself, no ads, no marketing, just word of mouth. The Supercharger network is a huge plus and from what I know the only Level 3 widely available. My SO had a Ioniq5 rental and had range anxiety all the time. Tesla has the trip planner making charging easy. People I know hate on Teslas, but as soon as they ride in mine they like it. I love my ‘24 Model Y and would only trade it in for the Juniper. The only downside has been some quality control things that I was able to get fixed through the SC or through my own investigations. I also wish FSD was per driver and not per car. I’ve driven over 8000 miles and have enjoyed every mile of it.

Maybe I got a bad batch, but the model y we have is the most uncomfortable, harshest ride, and most frustrating car I’ve ever used. The auto windshield wipers are unbearable in any rain conditions, and the screen controlling everything is incredibly annoying and unintuitive, especially when it updates every month and the layout changes. Not to mention the fact every auto manufacturer copied it and rarely any knew cars just have a knob for the ac controls

They did not say musk is like hitler. They took hitler as an example to show that it can be morally complicated to separate the art from the artist. They took an extreme example because it highlights their reasoning and everyone is aware of it. They could have said "it’s like when Alberto fucks your wife but you still buy his sandwiches because they are the best" or "it’s like when you hear Acme Apparel exclusively uses forced child labour but you still buy their hoodies because they are so cheap"

JeF4y 2025-05-17 17:29

I’ve been a “new car” guy my entire life. Owned over 30 cars in my 35 years of driving. Generally one every 2 years but sometimes at a year. The Tesla is the longest I’ve owned a car in my life. 2018 M3 dual motor, long range, white interior black exterior, and the only vehicle that could pull me away from BMW. I was a BMW junkie for 10 yrs and tried to leave twice only to come back within a year. At year two of owning the Tesla, I paid it off because this car leaves me wanting for nothing. At year 6 now, I am thinking about upgrading the computer but even there I’m fine with the original kit. I love this car. Always have.

I'd be curious about the losers who are overreacting on Tesla.... what they think when they find out about chase bank, Ford, IBM, Volkswagen etc and their ties with the real you know who's. The real ones, who actually waged global war and performed actual mass systematic murder across a continent. I'm sorry it's such a stupid angle, it's Idiocracy.

Tesla makes a great car but I do find that the pre-Juniper Ys have a pretty rough ride for passengers, feels much more like an old Civic than a middle of the road mid-size SUV like a RAV4. I've found a road trip in the backseat of a Y to be pretty uncomfortable due to ride quality. After test-driving the Juniper it feels like they've improved on that alot.

LionTigerWings 2025-05-17 17:41

It is. I love the new y. However, Tesla has no one to blame but themselves. It would have been easy to not get involved in politics but their ceo went out of their way to offend their largest consumer base. There’s a reason I don’t know the political opinion of pretty much any major ceo out there. Even the ones who stood on stage at the inauguration aren’t necessarily making a political statement. There’s that and there’s what teslas ceo is doing (which is basically becoming a politician themselves and becoming the biggest single donor in the nation).

My 2022 Y Performance rides like a Radio Flyer wagon. Even with 18'"wheels and better tires. It's oddly stiff over bumps but not firm in corners. We hate using it for road trips. I loved my early 18 Model 3 and wish we never upgraded. The Juniper is a lot better but still not perfect but we've decided to not give any more money to Tesla right now.

KayakShrimp 2025-05-17 18:19

Simply the best indeed. Believe me, I’ve looked long and hard at the alternatives. I recently drove an $80k Genesis EV for a week and wasn’t impressed. They didn’t get the fundamentals right. Short of shelling out for a Rivian or Lucid, I firmly believe there is nothing on even on par with a Tesla.

Rock-dust 2025-05-17 18:19

Elon could have done everything he did in terms of his actual actions (DOGE, backing Trump etc) and received a fraction of the backlash if he didn't insist on trolling for maximum reaction from people. Also chiming in on pointless somewhat hateful topics like the trans stuff, or politics in other countries. At this point, he is what he is, he has always been super unhinged, but he has zero self awareness that he played a big role in the whole situation.

LionTigerWings 2025-05-17 18:25

I would have upgraded to the new Y next year but it’s 84k cad vs 69k cad and I can’t really rationalize that. The tariff hike was rough, I can’t imagine how many new buyers are being gated by that I may as well wait for HW5 before upgrading at this point

noRushToDie 2025-05-17 19:07

Yea I agree. I survived a full on collusion in a Y last year and found out they automatically generate a crash report we can download. That saved me when my family ultimately got sued. Went and bought the same model without second thoughts because of that.

To be fair, people who compare Musk to Hitler are some of the dumbest people in society. Ignore them.

avebelle 2025-05-17 19:24

They were first to mass market but it feels like they've gone stagnant the last few years. Failed to deliver on the cybertruck while GM has their 200kw pack in their hummer/trucks. I really do hope things turn around for them.

ArrogantSquirrelz 2025-05-17 19:41

I have my reservations. After a few months (it's been 4 years now, 2021 M3 LR, bought right after the refresh to chrome delete door handles and such) I would have preferred a few more physical buttons and a dash in front of the steering wheel would have been nice. Mine is very noisy on the highway. However, almost 0 maintenance, not having to go to a gas station, rarely charging outside of my home (I'm a hermit, don't travel much), it's definitely been a great vehicle and I can't really complain overall. 36k miles and I haven't had to do a damn thing to this car aside from fill the washer fluid and rotate the tires.

rdean400 2025-05-17 19:57

Deathmeter1 2025-05-17 22:02

The auto wiper thing is really overblown though. You just leave them off and when it rains you tap the wiper button in a similar way you'd activate on a gas car's stalk

dewooPickle 2025-05-17 22:04

The frustrating user controls really kill me because it’s self inflicted. They could easily fix the rain sensor and ac controls but refuse. Otherwise the GUI the controls are in a different league compared to other cars.

twinbee 2025-05-17 22:08

> It would have been easy to not get involved in politics but their ceo went out of their way to offend their largest consumer base. It's because Elon is not just thinking about what's best for the future of the company (though that too), but also the future of the world. Time and time again, even when he voted left (Biden included), he and his companies were attacked by the left from multiple angles. The Left (of which I partially subscribe) lost Elon and they're gonna have to do ***a lot*** to win him back. Thin-Theory-4805 2025-05-18 01:35

NiteKid_R32 2025-05-18 01:59

This. I also love my Model 3 Performance. I fell in love the first time I drove a Tesla. Tried test driving other EVs. They were not it. Before driving the Tesla, I was convinced that I was going to get the Mach-E. After driving the Tesla, though, everything else just seemed inferior.

DwemerSteamPunk 2025-05-18 02:02

I got so many things that didn't need fixed, fixed before my warranty ended and they did all but but one. Im happy to have had such a good experience with the service center.

andyydna 2025-05-18 02:48

Agree. Took delivery of our new Model Y today and driving home on the interstate, it was very quiet, unlike the noisy boom box 2020 Model Y we upgraded from. There was a ring on the driver seat (from some sort of cleaner bottle, it appeared) which the delivery helper person wiped up with a rag when we pointed it out and the glove box wouldn't open, so he showed us a trick: for first open, open passenger door, and gently pull on the right edge of the lid when tapping the open button. It worked perfectly thereafter. I used a pretty comprehensive delivery checklist and the only "issue" was that the left taillight assembly was a couple millimeters proud of the surrounding body panels compared to the flush mount of the right assembly. My wife and I looked at it and agreed, "This is probably the last time we'll ever notice that, moving on." (I poked and prodded the assembly to see if it was loose or something and it didn't appear to be.) On the drive home, we discussed that if someone were to make a superior self-driving solution in the future, we'd be open to trying it, but until that happens, thrilled with our purchase (especially with tax credit and FSD transfer). We've been driving Teslas since 2017 and, in our view, the hardware and software just keeps getting better and better.

denzien 2025-05-18 02:49

Any time a new graphics card is released, I'm tempted to upgrade. But I have to calm down and evaluate if my current graphics card is a bottleneck or not for the games I'm playing. The best solution is just to stop reading Anandtech until I *need* to upgrade.

ChrisOfArrakis 2025-05-18 03:36

They skyrocketed the electric car industry and they continue to make some of the best cars on the planet, I doubt there would be many EVs on the road if it wasn't for Tesla taking the risk.

schaudhery 2025-05-18 03:49

Guys, please read the rules before you post: “Mentioning Elon Musk inappropriately in discussions will lead to a ban”

dewooPickle 2025-05-18 04:03

I have kids in car seats, they don’t weight enough to trip the sensors and turn on the rear AC. So literally every. Single. Time. I get in the car it’s 4 button clicks. Allowing users to save a default is simple but they think their system is perfect and it’s unnecessary.

Pokmonth 2025-05-18 05:12

Tesla *used to* be the best electric car in the USA but they stopped innovating or upgrading their same 4 models several years ago and other manufactures have far surpassed them. We aren't in 2017 anymore

blackbird410 2025-05-18 05:17

The sound system in them are really good too.

HamsterCapable4118 2025-05-18 05:18

I haven't tested the latest Highland / Juniper stuff yet so I'm hopeful. All my prior tests left me with that tin can feeling. In particular the booming noises over bumps really bothered me. Apparently there's a small percentage of the population that gets that booming sensation in their brains, and I am unfortunately in that group. It's like a massive subwoofer going off. If the improvements to NVH are as good as the reviews make them out to be, I would definitely consider one.

Jolimont 2025-05-18 05:31

Teslas today still outperform most EV makers on efficiency. The end.

Fine_Ad_6314 2025-05-18 05:45

I agree, the vehicle is awesome!

whosthatguy123 2025-05-18 06:06

Funny because people either love or hate the ioniq 6 theres no in between. I happen to love the way it looks but thats just me

3L54 2025-05-18 06:09

As fellow BMW junkie Tesla is most unintuitive and worst car to drive once I hvae experiences the luxury of my BMW. I really dont know what you liked about BMW that you see in Tesla but it cant be the things BMW is known for.

Mr-Zappy 2025-05-18 06:34

Yeah. I had minimal problems for the first 5000km / 3000mi for each car I’ve bought new. It’s important, but it’s a pretty low bar. The real question is how well they keep performing after 100,000km (or more).

Choyo 2025-05-18 06:39

> The Left (of which I partially subscribe) lost Elon and they're gonna have to do a lot to win him back. Guy's reputation is tainted for a decade at least. No one wants him back, or just the ones desperate for money.

Educational-Gold-434 2025-05-18 06:59

Especially the new model Y that things amazing

[deleted] 2025-05-18 07:06

I just never use the “auto wipers.” I came from a Honda so I don’t mind some things still being “manual.” I like the car otherwise.

ban-a-nan 2025-05-18 07:16

Why set that a criteria? Of course you can almost always find some other car with same feature, but no car with all the same features. E.g. Matrix headlights over a year ago were a great addition. Sure, many other cars has it as well, but it's mostly high-end models and as an additional package. In Teslas it's been included in all cars for a long time.

ConsistentRepublic00 2025-05-18 08:23

Or simply been professional and officially stepped away from the company to do his government work. It’s not as though he needed the salary to pay his bills..

Archet 2025-05-18 08:50

The build quality and attention to detail is superb. No other car brand can match Teslas panel gaps.

DoomBot5 2025-05-18 09:16

So you're saying tesla is worse than a dozen other manufacturers that you can just leave auto wipers on and leave it alone? With this car, I have to actively change it every time, which they make as hard as possible by limiting it to the screen. Before you say something, no I don't want to activate my wipers just to be able to turn them off on a sunny day.

skyypirate 2025-05-18 09:53

It's sad that you live in such a country. I'm from a country where the people have differing views on politics, but nobody is gonna go vandalise anybody's property because of differing political views.

xSyndicate58 2025-05-18 10:20

Is it the juniper or old one?

ecovironfuturist 2025-05-18 10:56

My MYLR was wrecked and I've transitioned back to a car with normal controls. I'm also a gamer and can handle different methods of controlling things. The wiper controls were awful. Click the button and scroll, maybe that's ok. But further clicks change the speed too, to go faster, so if you want the wipers slower you have to click down twice. Miserable.

PetuniaPickleswurth 2025-05-18 11:11

I’m close to the plunge myself. I’m likely a couple of weeks out from committing to the model Y Juniper, 2026 refresh. I do have curiosity about the performance edition - but 10 grand more, unless that comes with lifetime unlimited supercharging, I wouldn’t get it anyway. Just not sure ultra red, is actually red. In person it looks more wine colored. Almost verging on burgundy. I was hoping for more pop, like a candy shell red – more like the Mazda CX series red. Now that has pop. Still you don’t buy a car for the color of its skin.

[deleted] 2025-05-18 11:12

Nacka Supercharger 😜

PresidentStool 2025-05-18 11:24

I kept reading that Teslas are essentially a giant computer with a car strapped to it vs a car with a computer strapped to it. I never understood it until I got into a few and now I get it. The Tesla is meh, I know saying that in this sub will get me downvotes. However every Tesla I've been in has been creaky, felt like it had the same plasticky quality build as a Nissan. Vs hopping into a Mercedes or BMW everything feels like a tight fit with no rattling or creaking. Teslas are cars made by techies, Mercedes/BMW are cars made by actual car people. And any car should be able to reach 50k miles without an issue. Thats like bare minimum these days

Alimbiquated 2025-05-18 11:46

The history of Silicon Valley offers many examples of great tech companies ruined by dumb top management.

i_wayyy_over_think 2025-05-18 12:10

My theory was it was astroturf disinformation campaigns by every incumbent legacy auto company, oil industry, and various nation states that had a lot on the table to lose from the green energy transition. Then just the general Reddit loves to hate on any company that does well. But that was before all the DOGE drama.

NerdyGuy117 2025-05-18 12:26

They are still the most American made vehicles. Additionally, get any EV and you’ll still probably be supporting Tesla by using their charging network.

Desperdare 2025-05-18 12:27

💯 It’s about the car, the technology and safety. People don’t buy a Tesla car because of the company’s owner.

NerdyGuy117 2025-05-18 12:34

I mean, this recent update was nice. By the way my 2014 Model S still gets updates :). Do other car manufacturers update their 11 year old cars still? My other cars get to enjoy newer features, but they keep updating my 2014 with features the hardware can handle. The recent update also enabled matrix headlights for all car models that have matrix headlights, not just new cars. Also, they added charging routing preferences, which is nice. Saving trunk height based on location. Not sure if other makers do this though. Forward B Pillar camera recording :).

Jshawd40 2025-05-18 12:35

Even with all the build quality issues I do still like my Y. Just wish it was better quality. You can tell they cheap out on materials in some places.

bebopblues 2025-05-18 12:48

My Model 3 was purchased in 2018. And since I bought it till now, this car has the easiest maintenance. Out of pocket, I replaced the 12V battery, cabin air filters. wiper blades, and new set of tires. That's all. The glass roof and rear glass cracked at separate times. Both were replaced by Safelite thru my car insurance and no out of pocket costs.

PhilosophyCorrect279 2025-05-18 14:01

Congratulations! We really wanted the new Y! But we took delivery of a new 3 instead, and have been saying the same thing. It's just a very nice vehicle! It's a major upgrade from a Honda Civic that was supposed to be "one of the best vehicles". Night and day difference. We are now about to take a road trip, and we're excited! We're also not too stressed given the charging network! Last time we did this trip, half the gas stations were closed and really almost got us in trouble! For what it's worth, I/You/we don't have to like/support a specific person, in order to support a company with many wonderful people and families, producing some very awesome products. I'm sure there are some significantly worse CEO's, doing even worse things, that simply disappear in the background and don't get talked about. Regardless enjoy the new Y!

SpeakCodeToMe 2025-05-18 14:06

Everywhere in the country is pretty calm. It's very important to remember that headlines come quicker than ever and are tailored to engage and enrage.

Froggn_Bullfish 2025-05-18 14:08

If you don’t like the auto climate control (like me), it’s ridiculous to have to turn off auto before unlocking manual control, with the auto button extremely small and far away from the fan control and temperature settings, and the seat warm/cool function needing a submenu to switch, all of that requires an extended amount of taking your attention off the road for precise icon touches, and it blocks your nav the whole time because the entire interface itself is a giant submenu. It should just be six buttons at the bottom of the screen that are always there just below your music controls.

Every_Tap8117 2025-05-18 14:35

I’d say they make good car, they used to make great cars. They are losing ground in markets that don’t give 2 cents about politics. Look to China and Australia. I hope they can come back. I’d love to buy another one but if the Xiaomi su7 ultra shows up here it would be awful hard not to buy it over anything else. They should be in the Swiss marktet soon enough. Love my 22 m3p but the competition is heating up here and sorry but the 3 just stack up as it used to.

[deleted] 2025-05-18 14:37

The one where you can keep things charging after leaving the car is nice.

jonas_man 2025-05-18 14:49

Agree, i have 3 teslas and looking at replacing one of them with another Tesla

chilichilichilidog 2025-05-18 14:49

At the end of the day it’s a brand.

errmm 2025-05-18 15:31

| any car should be able to reach 50k without an issue Have you ever owned a BMW or Mercedes? How about a Mazda? Honda? Ford? Chevy? Rivian? Lifetime repair costs for a Tesla are lower than any other brand. https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-maintenance/the-cost-of-car-ownership-a1854979198/

Beat_halls22 2025-05-18 15:37

I live in the bay too and I feel like all the teslas just appeared one day lmao.

PresidentStool 2025-05-18 15:48

A car with less moving parts will of course be less expensive. Compared to a Mercedes EV, Tesla is actually more expensive to maintain. https://www.topspeed.com/evs-lowest-and-highest-maintenance-costs/

neale87 2025-05-18 15:55

I want it as a car not a robotaxi though, and as it is with my current Y, I'd like it to have some of the practical niceties that smart competitors have. I'm not just talking buttons and HUD, but things like autosteer and adaptive cruise control that's actually market leading instead of being shameful compared to things like VW's version. It's fine for driving 100s of miles only on interstates/autoroutes/motorways, but for day to day driving VW's approach is way more useful. If Tesla actually put FSD to one side temporarily and focused on competing \*now\*, then it wouldn't be difficult to sort it out on a minor hardware refresh.

Zealousideal-Jury-70 2025-05-18 16:08

It’s true.

errmm 2025-05-18 16:16

Interesting article. Not sure about their methodology or a Mercedes paid ad to a media publisher. They say the Mercedes has the best digital experience; that’s laughable.

Altruistic_Ad6316 2025-05-18 16:38

This is the internal struggle I have as well. I want to get one but the fact that I have no car payment has outweighed my decision at the moment.

rdwoolf 2025-05-18 16:42

If I already owned a Tesla I would keep it. I’ve loved the Teslas I’ve rented and had been planning on buying one when I made my next car purchase. But I just cannot purposely support this man any more. So now I’m looking at other brands for my next vehicle purchase. Over the last weekend I rented a Chevy Equinox EV. I liked it. Not as much as I like the Teslas I’ve rented. But it was still a positive experience. Next, I want to try a Hyundai IONIQ 5 & 6. I really like what I’ve read about the IONIQ 6. If Musk wil ever leaves Tesla I would consider it again. But I doubt that’ll ever happen. But I also never thought Travis Kalanick would ever not be running Uber, and yet, that happened. So maybe one day Tesla will be Musk-free as well. I’m definitely grateful that Tesla was able to prove that electric cars are a vehicle consumers will buy. I doubt we’d have all these other brands making electric cars without Tesla being so successful.

QuantumHosts 2025-05-18 16:52

well, they have no motor, don’t need oil, or transmission, or exhaust works…so yah it’s easy to make a tesla.

RealSecretRecipe 2025-05-18 17:12

Which rims are those?

outkast8459 2025-05-18 17:15

Is it overblown to have a car that’s supposed to be the future fail at basic things. And then put it into a menu on a touch screen so you can’t easily turn it on?

outkast8459 2025-05-18 17:20

I consider drivers amenities tech. After driving my gv60 the last few years I went to drive my brothers model ‘24 model Y and simple things like not having a HUD made it feel quite dated. I do miss dog mode though.

alexjako 2025-05-18 17:20

Y is my favorite we have an X now and I prefer the Y

outkast8459 2025-05-18 17:23

Serious question. What is it you want out of the New Model Y that is worth the upgrade? I like the new redesign a bit but I feel like all the “features” I’ve seen(better suspension, noise isolation, etc) are just like “we’re better at making cars now”.

initram5 2025-05-18 17:31

100% true. Beautiful beasts.

neale87 2025-05-18 17:34

My gripe is that I can't just have "air". I have to have air at a specific temperature. A smart system would allow me to say "at least 18C, no warmer than 23C" so between those temps it neither heats nor cools.

neale87 2025-05-18 17:36

That's a really good point about the demand problem. There are now so many good non-Tesla EVs that have just a few key knobs and buttons that make all the difference when driving. Also they often have better equiv of standard Autopilot where you don't have to fight it to dodge a person or pothole (e.g. VW's system)

fivehots 2025-05-18 18:08

The only people I’ve ever heard this argument from (the “Tesla’s are bad” argument) is from Tesla owners saying this is “what they say.” In my experience, living in LA, I never got any slack for owning a Tesla. The CEO may be doing any number of things I don’t agree with, but the product works. Like, I’m not a fan of new Ye, but I would NEVER say he makes bad music.

fivehots 2025-05-18 18:10

I wish the customer service reps were a little more knowledgable. Knowing I could’ve gotten the long range instead of the standard plus for like $17 extra dollars a month really soured my over all experience.

fivehots 2025-05-18 18:11

I’d argue 99,000 of those people are just showing up wanting to feed their families.

fivehots 2025-05-18 18:13

The irony is that I love that Tesla’s are tech surrounded by a car. That’s actually my biggest selling point. A car around tech is better than a car with tech (usually). I’m taking a Lamborghini anyday, but the tech of a Tesla really is unmatched in a vehicle.

[deleted] 2025-05-18 18:51

You can kick me out for this n that’s fine. It’s not about politics the protests. The American made great technology cool… the price though. How are “all”Americans going to be able to afford one that’s my only issue with everything. I love the sound of my motors I’m a love the sound of a good exhaust guy. I would definitely get one for long trips or whatever. Again affording one to buy off the lot without huge percent interests or monthly fees still not the time for me I’m guessing. Congrats to you guys who can. N the ones who can buy them for your kids I see at the charging station all the time 16 year old female. 17 year old female. Sorry for the rant just do agree support the workers everything else eh. Just make it affordable for even the most compact one and I’d support it maybe who knows

Acrobatic-Suit5105 2025-05-18 19:12

The charging stations will be Tesla's life jacket

[deleted] 2025-05-18 20:19

That wasn’t an exaggeration, that was a lie.

twinbee 2025-05-19 01:11

Turns out the same skills he used to build up Tesla and co are handy for making DOGE streamline government too, which will ultimately benefit not just Tesla, but all other companies too. As an ongoing shareholder, I'm perfectly happy with that.

twinbee 2025-05-19 01:14

CNN thought otherwise as I linked. Reddit is mostly just bitter because he's not on their political team anymore.
