See what happens when you alienate most of your customer base??

atomicskiracer 2025-04-17 14:35

But yeah, sales are fine nothing to worry about

WenMunSun 2025-04-17 14:38

For 2024 year models because they don’t qualify for the EV tax credits whereas the 2025 Cybertruck does. This is to move the old inventory. New 2025 Cybertrucks are not discounted. Idiots will say this is because of low demand or brand damage.

pinpinbo 2025-04-17 14:40

Need more discounts. It is simply too expensive.

atomicskiracer 2025-04-17 14:40

…you think they have unsold 2024 models in April because demand is high?

[deleted] 2025-04-17 14:41

Old inventory…. You are calling people idiots for saying because of low demand. But products move if the demand is higher. This is because it was a pet project truck, doesn’t appeal to most consumers, and brand damage all together. Whilst also being massively unaffordable.

kids-See-Gh0sts 2025-04-17 14:43

2024 are unsold because they don't qualify for the tax credit, when 2025 does, so they need a discount to make it even, simple as that...

MarioMartinsen 2025-04-17 14:45

See what happens when customer can be manipulated? Cybertruck had weak sales since day one. Sales, not reservations.

psychoacer 2025-04-17 14:46

Obviously you want to get old stock out first since its been sitting the longest but the fact that its been sitting for this long and getting discounted this much can only mean they're not meeting expectations

Dont_Think_So 2025-04-17 14:46

Is it just me or are these discounts not that steep? These numbers only apply to 2024 model year, which didn't qualify for the $7500 tax credit, while newer vehicles do. Since it doesn't make sense for the older vehicles to cost more than the newer ones, you need a $7500 discount just to break even. But older cars *should* have a discount, and the extra $3500 just doesn't seem that much off of a sticker price of $100k for a car from last year.

outie2k 2025-04-17 14:49

That is how discount works. First it’s a smaller amount to see who bites. When no one buys the discount will be greater. No one just discounts 50% off the car right off the bat to move inventories.

lankyevilme 2025-04-17 14:50

I'm not alienated, I won't buy a cybertruck because it looks like shit.  I'd be interested if it looked like a truck.

Creepysarcasticgeek 2025-04-17 14:52

They will lose money per cybertruck sold and delivered before admitting that sales are not fine.

Dont_Think_So 2025-04-17 14:52

Okay but people are acting like we're already seeing steep discounts.

imacleopard 2025-04-17 14:54

I won’t buy one simply because it’s too expensive and it makes zero financial financial sense

txreddit17 2025-04-17 14:54

Same. I dont want one at literally any price. There is no discount big enough to get me to buy one.

SDK9 2025-04-17 14:54

I think Rivian built what the Cybertruck should have been.

[deleted] 2025-04-17 14:57

Eventually they’re just going to need to cut prices on the dang truck. If they have to keep putting 10k+ incentives to sell, that means it’s too expensive to begin with.

AztecWheels 2025-04-17 14:59

I ordered one when they were announced because $50k USD for something with massive range and functionality was a no brainer. Yeah it was ugly, I didn't care. The Tesla hate aside, I cancelled my reservation when it came out because it was half the range promised and twice the cost. This was an utter failure of a product launch. They should have just made a less crazy pickup truck, one that people could actually afford. I should add that I know 5 other people who also pre-ordered and they all cancelled for the same reason.

casino_r0yale 2025-04-17 15:00

I’d buy one for a tenner

Choice-Ad6376 2025-04-17 15:00

Another 30k more discounts and you will have buyers.

[deleted] 2025-04-17 15:02

WenMunSun 2025-04-17 15:06

Or maybe because someone put in an order in December, the truck gets sent to a delivery center near the customer, and for some reason the customer suddenly cancels the purchase. Now there's a truck, stranded in a random location, with no immediate customer (ie inventory). This is not uncommon. Then January rolls around and the new 2025 year trucks suddenly qualify for the EV tax credit whereas the old 2024 inventory does not. That means the 2025 trucks are effectively $7500 less expensive for an identical spec. No one is going to buy a 2024 year Cybertruck at the same price, which is why they are discounted. And you can't discount them just $7500 because why would anyone buy an older build at the exact same price? Newer builds will have better QC. So they need to discount a bit more than $7500 to incentivize buyers to take the old inventory. It's really really simple actually.

Dont_Think_So 2025-04-17 15:09

They don't have incentives on trucks from this year though.

[deleted] 2025-04-17 15:11

Stunning and brave ✊

ChunkyThePotato 2025-04-17 15:14

Exactly. This is literally just to sell the remaining 2024 trucks that aren't eligible for the tax credit. Obviously they need to discount those to get people to choose them over ones that are eligible for the tax credit. They obviously will try to bring down the price of the truck over time to get more and more sales, just like they've done for all their vehicles, but this isn't that.

GOA_AMD65 2025-04-17 15:14

Currently, every one sold is profitable. I hope prices come down but I doubt they will enough for me to get one next year when I need a new vehicle.

ChunkyThePotato 2025-04-17 15:15

Rivian R1T sells way less than Cybertruck.

Every_Tap8117 2025-04-17 15:16

So why buy one if tomorrow it’s even cheaper

CriticalBasedTheory 2025-04-17 15:17

Nah cybertruck just missed the mark.

AmbitiousFunction911 2025-04-17 15:20

Many people that are looking at a $80,000 truck don't qualify for the tax credit.

where are the similar discounts for 2024 S, X, 3 and Y?

kids-See-Gh0sts 2025-04-17 15:22

They all qualify for the tax credit? Since 2023??

joshonekenobi 2025-04-17 15:30

Won't take it if it's free. It's dangerous. I'll take a heavy discount on a model Y.

AmbitiousFunction911 2025-04-17 15:30

you're totally missing the point, but that checks out in a thread where you are defending Cybertruck sales lol

GopherFawkes 2025-04-17 15:31

You literally just explained a situation where the demand wasn't there as an example for why it couldn't be a demand issue

Dont_Think_So 2025-04-17 15:34

Okay, but many do, and the supply and demand curve cares about the whole market, not just those on the margins. And even for those that don't qualify, idk, 12% feels like a fair, normal discount on last year's model, no?

oghowie 2025-04-17 15:35

Complete failure.

Steev182 2025-04-17 15:36

Rivian built an EV Tacoma with futuristic lights.

AmbitiousFunction911 2025-04-17 15:37

“Those on the margins”? Again, the target income bracket demographic for an $80,000 truck is beyond the federal income levels. Those that do qualify are the margins for the target demographic. The truck is too expensive and poorly designed/specified. That’s the problem.

feurie 2025-04-17 15:38

Okay? You’re not addressing the point of the comment you’re replying to lol. These are vehicles that are previous model years and don’t get the tax credit.

AztecWheels 2025-04-17 15:38

I didn't say that I cared that it was ugly, in fact I said the opposite. I liked the fact it was so different looking and I still do. And you're assuming I ordered the $50k one which I didn't I ordered the tri-motor one as did the others I mentioned. I don't get incentives where I live and they should not be a factor when talking about the promised vs delivered MSRP. It's a fair point that it isn't twice the cost, it was closer to 70% when I decided to cancel (foundation series was the only one available). Here's the actual values for all, on average between 50-71% more expensive. **Single-Motor RWD**: Starting at $39,900 with a range of over 250 miles. * **Dual-Motor AWD**: Starting at $49,900 with a range of over 300 miles. * **Tri-Motor AWD**: Starting at $69,900 with a range of over 500 miles2. However, when deliveries began in late 2023, the actual prices were significantly higher: * **Single-Motor RWD**: Starting at $61,240 (available in 2025) with an estimated range of 250 miles (range as promised but 50% more expensive) * **Dual-Motor AWD**: Starting at $80,240 with a range of 340 miles (more range, 60% increase in cost) * **Cyberbeast (Tri-Motor AWD)**: Starting at $100,240 with a range of 320 miles (36% less range, 57% increase in cost) * Foundation series: Add $20k USD bumps the increase in cost to 71% above promised) No matter how you slice it, Tesla missed the mark big time on these. I'm not even blaming anyone who bought one or wants to buy one. Go ahead, knock yourself out if you think there's value there. I'm also not saying there isn't value. Compared to other EV pickups, I think the CT is priced fairly but Tesla didn't deliver what they promised. If they weren't such a pariah now and the price and specs were the same (or better in the case of the rwd version), I probably would buy one. I own two Teslas and I love them both. It doesn't change that the CT launch was awful.

The average new truck price in the US is $60k, it's not that far out. And looking at the actual Tesla inventory page, this article seems to be talking about demo units, so we're talking about cars that already have hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles on them for less than 15% off.

AmbitiousFunction911 2025-04-17 15:41

33% more expensive is “not that far out”? 😂

Any from last year in Canada would be foundation series. Comes with fsd and a few other bells and whistles.

feurie 2025-04-17 15:46

Right. But many do.

rainer_d 2025-04-17 15:47

From an EV-perspective, no truck makes sense. What differentiates the Y and the 3 from most other cars is that's these are "world-car" - they can be sold literally anywhere in the world with almost no modifications (subject to local regulations regarding lights and indicators and stuff like that). The Cybertruck is nothing like that. It's a nice lifestyle vehicle - but too brutalistic for most people to actually want to own and drive one on a daily basis. As the US is heading into a recession, it's precisely the wrong vehicle at the wrong time to have a multi-billion factory outfitted for. Elon, of all people has probably realized this a while ago - he is usually very good with numbers. Not sure what he's doing about it. But I am pretty sure it's being worked on.

rainer_d 2025-04-17 15:48

Only the entry-level models of 3 and Y (and pretty much any cars ICE or BEV) make *some* sense...

Steev182 2025-04-17 15:50

If the AWD comes down to $60k after incentives, I'd probably go for it. After test driving an AWD Cybertruck and a gen 2 dual large R1T, the Cybertruck is more spacious, more useful but drives like a smaller vehicle. I cancelled my reservation too, because if I were to order a Cybertruck there are better incentives. The preorder didn't give me anything I cared about.

demongraves 2025-04-17 15:56

Exactly. That’s why they’ve cut production so much.

makoblade 2025-04-17 16:04

They were working on the multi-prong approach. Alienate sane people because it looks like a metallic dorito, alienate the rest by being human garbage. See? That's called Win/Win!

makoblade 2025-04-17 16:05

If they want to sell them en masse they need to get the price to $30K.

makoblade 2025-04-17 16:06

That's not true. My 5 year old absolutely wants one. He doesn't know any better.

snark42 2025-04-17 16:15

Plenty of married people making less than $300k/year MAGI might be looking at $80k vehicles.

enduseruseruser 2025-04-17 16:17

I used to want one so bad, now I’m glad I didn’t buy one. I just couldn’t see spending 100k on a truck I’d never utilize. I’m waiting on a Model S Plaid refresh as a daily.

Harryhodl 2025-04-17 16:28

Good

specter491 2025-04-17 16:28

The range sucks on CT. Silverado gets 440. Hummer gets 380. CT gets 362 but only if you give up multiple luxury features like leather seats. That's a crazy compromise for such an expensive truck. Otherwise it's 320. Same range as the lightning, the lightning can charge at superchargers, and a massive plethora of ICE f150 accessories work on the lightning. Unless you really, really want FSD then CT isn't worth it.

specter491 2025-04-17 16:30

100% that's why I preordered and why I cancelled. Was massive letdown

specter491 2025-04-17 16:33

The liberals crying about Elon and DOGE are not the people buying $70k pick up trucks lol. Quite the opposite actually

GTFOScience 2025-04-17 16:34

Correct me if I'm wrong but these are the numbers reported from the manufacturers, are they not? None of them are the real world range?

specter491 2025-04-17 16:35

CT real world range isn't 320 either. And the EPA range for Silverado is higher lol, 492 miles per Google

Internal-Jello-6755 2025-04-17 16:35

I have a lot of contradictory feelings about the cyber truck now I was all in @ $39,999 for a rear wheel drive Cybertruck in 2019... but then DOGiE happened. I don't think I could put up with the harassment/attention I would receive , since I live in Northern Virginia home of many federal workers... I still think it's a cool looking truck, I can't really afford 60-75,000... Also, the advantages of electric are becoming less apparent (limited resources for electric batteries), I'm much less enthusiastic about individual's ability to curb climate change, blaming consumers is a corporate/government dodge of responsibility. I can imagine picking one up at a steep discount of $40,000 or less that's the only scenario could possibly afford one. Sometimes I think maybe this will be my middle aged retirement car. I'll buy one 10 years from now and I've got nothing better to do than tool around and enjoy it.

Craig_in_PA 2025-04-17 16:36

I was referring to all Teslas. Great cars but way to poison a company with trash politics and make people not want to buy them.

specter491 2025-04-17 16:37

Suitable_Switch5242 2025-04-17 16:51

Why is there still 2024 model year inventory in April 2025?

Suitable_Switch5242 2025-04-17 16:52

But why is there still 2024 model year inventory in April 2025?

NWMike1 2025-04-17 16:57

True it is too expensive at this time. Don’t forget HEPA air filtration, incredible sound system, rear screen, heated and ventilated seats, software is king in Tesla. Full Self Driving is a game changer. I use it daily. Highest safety rating ever for a truck. But I’d like to see it lower as well.

ChunkyThePotato 2025-04-17 17:04

Obviously because when they came out with the 2025 model that qualified for the tax credit, nobody wanted to buy the 2024 models anymore since they'd be paying more money without the tax credit. It's like if Apple came out with an iPhone that's the same as the current one but $100 cheaper. All the iPhones that are currently on shelves wouldn't be sold, because everyone wants an iPhone with a discount instead. Makes sense?

nFgOtYYeOfuT8HjU1kQl 2025-04-17 17:05

Yeah, when they missed on the price and range, I immediately canceled.

Suitable_Switch5242 2025-04-17 17:07

Of course, but they've had nearly 4 months to discount those models and get them sold, and they still have plenty sitting in inventory.

[deleted] 2025-04-17 17:08

yeah this is the thing people never mention in their feature analysis, probably because they've never actually tried the latest versions of FSD themselves. They don't get it now, they will....

[deleted] 2025-04-17 17:09

The original launch pitch was starting at $39K or something crazy low. Tesla's priorities have changed since then though.

[deleted] 2025-04-17 17:10

the lease deals are cheap on the cybertruck, I wish they were as low on the S plaid....

ChunkyThePotato 2025-04-17 17:10

Why discount them immediately when you can instead prolong the process and get a few extra sales at the higher prices from people who for example don't qualify for the tax credit? Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "plenty". More than one? Yes. More than the industry average inventory level? Likely not, since Tesla as a whole is far under the industry average for inventory.

Suitable_Switch5242 2025-04-17 17:11

> And you're assuming I ordered the $50k one which I didn't I ordered the tri-motor one as did the others I mentioned. You're absolutely correct about the truck being more expensive with less capability, but people are referring to the promised $50k trim because that's what you said in your original comment: > I ordered one when they were announced because $50k USD for something with massive range and functionality was a no brainer.

holteeee 2025-04-17 17:17

I was always hoping they were trolling us with the specs and launch day they were going to announce “300 miles while towing at full capacity.” I would have at least seriously considered it if that was the case. Instead, I too, cancelled my pre order.

voxitron 2025-04-17 17:18

No, thank you.

CTrandomdude 2025-04-17 17:22

They need to slow or stop production. It will never be a mass production model. Hopefully they can redesign it and use much of the same internal components. Due to the unique design it will never be that popular. They should have designed a more appealing truck for the masses. This may go the way of the delorean even though the Cybertruck is well built.

InterstellarChange 2025-04-17 17:26

No one is buying CT's. They have a huge inventory. Wait until Q3 and Q4. They will drop another $10k.

GTFOScience 2025-04-17 17:30

CT is 230 last I checked. My M3 is 350 and I get more like 230 as well.

Dont_Think_So 2025-04-17 17:40

These are floor demo models.

Suitable_Switch5242 2025-04-17 17:46

The article is about non-demo 2024 models, which I also see in my local inventory with discounts applied. There are demo models as well but they are marked as such.

Sidekicknicholas 2025-04-17 17:49

I fall into this camp. I pre-ordered, loved the idea that it was "something new" at least from a design perspective (I also loved the Delorean). .... then the price moved, I stuck with. ... then the range dropped, I bailed. .... now, I wouldn't touch one with a 10-foot pole after the build issues and Elon's spiral into madness. Tesla's board really needs to step in or things at Tesla are going to get ugly as soon as Elon and Trump aren't in control of the country.

Overall_Curve6725 2025-04-17 17:49

Is the $100k + ugly truck really worth $100k+ when you find out out all the external body panels are glued on? Suckers driving fragile dishwashers on wheels 🤣

Dont_Think_So 2025-04-17 17:50

Maybe you're right, I didn't scroll down far enough to see non-demo models. Even so, it's not surprising they didn't sell if they previously were similar price to brand new models but new models get a huge tax credit.

Vaginosis-Psychosis 2025-04-17 18:22

But in all fairness, many people don’t care about fsd. It’s cool and all, but what’s so hard about driving? Also, you have to pay attention to the road. You cant text or read the news. So I still don’t understand why it’s so great. It just allows me to pay a little less attention to driving, but I still have to remain attentive.

thasparzan 2025-04-17 18:23

They gotta pay me to take it, then I'll think about it

Qs9bxNKZ 2025-04-17 18:29

This. There pre-orders (rwd, awd, and beast) Reduced payload, rear won’t fold down for longer things like kayaks, and the range.

Qs9bxNKZ 2025-04-17 18:32

Plywood sheets. I need to transport 4x8 ( or 3x8 metal roof panels) plus someone’s a tall object like a table of miter saw ( without removing it from the stand). Either you need a truck or a mini van if you don’t want your gear to walk off when you buy something from Home Depot. The CT can do that.

[deleted] 2025-04-17 18:36

I would question how many people say they don't care about FSD have used the new versions of FSD themselves, you get used to it very quickly. On long drives it's a game changer it's mentally exhausting driving for hours even if it doesn't seem like it, when you're tired, in traffic or when driving is otherwise boring. When you want to eat a sandwich while driving, etc.. It's also logically safer, the car can look in all directions simultaneously and process information in a way that a human just can't. Being forced to pay attention is temporary. Sure some people will say they don't care, or prefer to just drive themselves. There are also people that don't like air conditioning or prefer to call taxis.

Qs9bxNKZ 2025-04-17 18:38

You obviously have no core about panels and glue. Aircraft like composite body Cirrus and Diamond use epoxy to laminate and attach parts. They go further and fly faster without problem. Even when doing things like construction, plywood uses glue to hold sheathes , and OSB as well. Nothing wrong with glue off out I’d a good epoxy. Every windscreen is glued today on every vehicle.

HiAssFace 2025-04-17 18:45

What happened to the $39k starting price musk advertised when it was first announced?

Overall_Curve6725 2025-04-17 18:45

Seems Elon has no “core” about glue either. He admitted Tesla used the wrong glue. So how long before the larger panels start falling off? Car wash catches the front corner on the front fender. Give that joke of a truck some hot summers and cold winters and we will see major “ exoskeleton” 🤣 failures

HiAssFace 2025-04-17 18:48

Exactly this

Qs9bxNKZ 2025-04-17 18:48

True, Tesla does pick the wrong glue. Pedals come to mind. I live and have worked in snowy areas ( still some on the ground now ) and can state that the correct glue will outlast nails/screws ( hence a fence that I will be rebuilding) along with asphalt and mortar. But a glue or epoxy will hold up far better than metal bolts and screws.

Vibraniumguy 2025-04-17 18:52

So you ordered the cyberbeast? Because the middle model, the dual motor AWD Cybertruck, actually comes with 40 miles higher range (340 miles vs the planned 300). The new base RWD cybertruck also comes with 350 miles of range (363 with soft tonneau) which is 100+ miles more range than the originally planned base model that was supposed to come with 250 miles of range. What are you talking about...? Also why cancel your reservation when Tesla just keeps sending out invites to reservation holders to put them at the front of the list for new cybertruck models? 99% of people not satisfied with the cybertruck invite just wait for the next one. Makes me think this story is fake

Brutus713 2025-04-17 19:24

Could this mean Elon was WRONG? The world was NOT desperate for a Madmax-style stainless steel electric truck?!?!? Will he pay any consequences for wasting (probably) a billion on this project? Tesla could use new leadership IMHO....

Dr_Pippin 2025-04-17 19:28

Have you ever seen a bell curve?

AmbitiousFunction911 2025-04-17 19:28

Entertain me on the bell curve you think is applicable to this. I can’t wait doctor

Dr_Pippin 2025-04-17 19:33

These are last year's models that don't qualify for tax credits.

Dr_Pippin 2025-04-17 19:40

And yet Tesla sold more Cybertrucks in the month of January than Rivian sold of R1Ts in the past 6 months. I think it looks ugly as hell, yet they're selling better than the R1T.

Dr_Pippin 2025-04-17 19:45

That data point is contained in one standard deviation from the mean.

enzo32ferrari 2025-04-17 20:09

> less crazy pickup Before the Model S, electric cars were ugly and had to “fit” into a design language of “it’s ugly because it’s efficient/electric.” The Model S reversed that with the thesis “electric cars can be pretty.” There was nothing inherently wrong with the utility, design, or ruggedness of a typical pickup truck so the Cybertruck is a complete reversal of that original thesis.

FrostyFire 2025-04-17 20:24

Automotive adhesive is used on all modern cars, you just clowned yourself.

FrostyFire 2025-04-17 20:26

Elon didn’t say anything about it, what else you gonna make up today?

FrostyFire 2025-04-17 20:29

Believe it or not but most of the world can’t afford a 6 figure vanity vehicle. People put $100 refundable reservations down mostly for a $40k version at the time in 2019. There will be more buyers as the price comes down. Literally every Tesla model in history started out this way, expensive at first, cheaper later. Also the CT sold more than the Model S and X in Q1 combined.

FrostyFire 2025-04-17 20:31

They sold more in Q1 than Model S and X combined. 5x the Rivian R1T in Q1 too. They’re just opening up to other countries. Might not seem like high volume, but they still sold $5 billion worth in a year as people claim it’s a failure.

NateWilliams2 2025-04-17 20:38

Yes, but not all modern cars are prone to body panels separating from the car. The problem isn’t that they used adhesive, it’s how they used it.

HipHopGrandpa 2025-04-17 20:44

True. For those that need a truck it makes sense. Many see it as a lifestyle choice because they don’t work in the trades or do many projects.

ChuckJA 2025-04-17 20:48

I know two people that picked one up in the last month. Both because of the previous round of incentives. These price cuts will probably move even more of them. Ultimately, once volume is up, I expect prices to creep down on a permanent basis.

spinwizard69 2025-04-17 20:52

While I didn't expect that price to stick due the massive inflation we have suffered, the entry prices for all CyberTrucks are just too high for the majority of the truck buying economy. I know many people don't believe this but trucks for the most part are purchased by people that need their characteristics. In part they have to be economical for the task at hand. So it comes down to this, even if a Cybertruck is cheaper to own over time, That entry mountain of cash can be very hard for many to climb. Then some of use still have real concerns over charging, towing and cold weather performance. Personally I'd love to see much better batteries when it comes to loss of performance in the cold.

Qs9bxNKZ 2025-04-17 20:54

And not to mention, I can get sleepy on the road. I’m being honest to a fault here. That TACC can be a life saver. Straight shots only (again, honest not FSD because of the inside camera) can let me drive 2-3 hours and not wake up dead (as a relative used to say) if I nod off. I can’t do that in any other vehicle. Gah. I would have bought the CT and still am considering, but the value isn’t there right now!

SubmergedSublime 2025-04-17 20:54

Wait: whose safety rating? I was under the impression Telsa had not done safety ratings for the CT in the more traditional public-reporting way?

spinwizard69 2025-04-17 21:01

The truck is most certainly too expensive, however it is demonstrating incredibly good design. The few crashes of the Cybertruck so far demonstrate a very well put together machine. Some of the roll overs would have killed the occupants of other trucks with totally crushed cabs. As for specified which I take that you mean features, I'd have to agree that we don't have what I'd call an ideally specified machine FOR ME. For others though it might be perfect. For one that flat back half of the roof is the perfect place for solar panels. Yeah I know that you wouldn't get much range each day, but even 20 miles a day adds up, especially if you are parked for a 4 day weekend at your favorite camp.

Orbitect 2025-04-17 21:04

In April I was averaging about 350 w/mile. My cyberbeast with stock tires is rated for 301. The 122.4kwh battery pack has let me go close to 340 real world. I expect in August to be a bit less as I run the Ac and cooled seats.

rainer_d 2025-04-17 21:07

Towbar and trailer. Surprisingly, people in Europe get by without trucks. The Y tows 1600kg. The iX at least 2000.

spinwizard69 2025-04-17 21:08

For many truck owners and users most of the above doesn't matter except for range. 230 miles of range is pathetic for a truck, especially when that is under optimal conditions. Load it down and you have significantly less range. Drive in really cold weather and your range goes down even more, then you loose more towing. I really think Tesla missed the boat on range. Trucks are not commuter cars where you can recharge every night after a 40 to 80 mile commute to work. As much as I like the new "long range" variant I still don't think it is good enough for many truck owners.

CTrandomdude 2025-04-17 21:10

I understand that but I do not believe it is sustainable. I think it only declines year over year once the initial orders go out. The goal should not be to have a vehicle sell at the low rate of a S or X but you should be going for numbers like the Y or 3. You should be trying to go after the numbers we see for an ice F150. They made the Y the number one selling vehicle gas or electric. That should be the goal. They are letting other manufacturers catch up. Not ideal.

spinwizard69 2025-04-17 21:18

Inflation is part of the problem. However I still believe it is possible to build a work truck on the Cybertruck platform. Work trucks being cheap with a minimal of features. Being cheap every truck I've ever purchased was usually one step up from bargain basement. Unfortunately bargain basement is actually rather expensive these days.

Brutus713 2025-04-17 21:18

I doubt they can lower the price THAT much. Thing is full of expensive parts like the bulletproof stainless steel....

VirtualLife76 2025-04-17 21:20

Why, regular trucks look like crap also, they are supposed to, they are modern day trucks.

spinwizard69 2025-04-17 21:21

This is my concern. I don't see Tesla being really aggressive in going after the majority of truck buyers. Maybe I can put off the purchase for 2+ years but that might not mean cheaper prices due to inflation. Hopefully it will mean better batteries.

VirtualLife76 2025-04-17 21:21

But the news told OP what to think, it must be true since they can't think for themself.

spinwizard69 2025-04-17 21:25

Actually I'd love a Cyberturck because it doesn't look like a truck. You buy a Ford and from a distance it looks exactly like a Dodge and a Chevy. It is pretty disgusting really. Beyond that the quality of the trucks from the big three have dropped like an anvil on a wood floor. The last Ford I bought was a piece of junk.

spinwizard69 2025-04-17 21:27

Actually financial sense might be the best reason to buy a Cybertruck right now. For the right business case they can save a company a lot of money that adds up rather quickly. For a private individual there may be more argument about finances but there are positives even so.

spinwizard69 2025-04-17 21:29

Rivian is not likely to survive, the value they offer is less than any other truck maker.

spinwizard69 2025-04-17 21:30

OK so what has anything Elon done that can be a sign of a "spiral into madness". The federal government deserved exactly what they are getting.

spinwizard69 2025-04-17 21:32

Anybody that is upset about DOGE is not in his right mind or is supportive of criminal activity.

spinwizard69 2025-04-17 21:35

Obviously you are out of touch with modern technology. Glue has a lot of advantages that result in its use in all sorts of applications including airplanes.

Craig_in_PA 2025-04-17 21:39

How many indictments? Oh yeah, still zero.

FrostyFire 2025-04-17 21:42

It’s a simple fact in that price point. Was the best selling vehicle over 100k, surprise there aren’t many sales in that price category. Tesla has always priced every model high at initial release then lowered it with time. You’ll never see 3/Y volume until the price matches those.

FrostyFire 2025-04-17 21:44

Guess you don’t know much about manufacturing. They were profitable on the CT per their Q3 earnings call. Other manufacturers wish they could be profitable on a brand new platform in less than a year, basically unheard of. Costs billions to produce a new platform.

spinwizard69 2025-04-17 21:48

Sales DO NOT indicate a failure!!!!! Like every Tesla made I'd expect continuous improvement. In fact this is why it is often advised not to buy a brand new revision from Tesla. Any production process will have start up bumps, vehicles are no different. Frankly the design is exactly what makes it popular even if it doesn't cut the mustard elsewhere. One of those elsewhere's is range. This is very much a truck for the masses as it already is far safer than anything else marketed as a pickup. I don't see Cybertruck going anywhere soon. Just looking at the videos that come from Texas every week al those trucks have to be going someplace. Cybertruck isn't perfect but neither is any other pickup. In this case they already have better hardware than Ford. After years of big three pickups I really pissed off with the quality coming from Ford and to a lesser degree the others. In many ways Cybertruck totally outclasses vehicles from the big three. However Cybertruck does have a significant short coming with respect to range and addressing that would bring in far more customers than anything else they can do.

p3n9uins 2025-04-17 21:52

If you scroll through the inventory these are cars with 1k+ demo miles driven (two exceptions had mileage in the hundreds). Say what you want, but to me they’re clearing stale inventory

RedOceanofthewest 2025-04-17 21:53

I think it’s way overpriced. I don’t qualify for the credit. So no way I’d pay the current price.  I was going to buy one till they got crazy with pricing. The quality is another concern but price alone stops the purchase

CTrandomdude 2025-04-17 21:58

The numbers need only be compared to that product segment. So a pickup would only realistically be compared to other pick up trucks. That is why I specifically said it needs a truck to compete with a F150. Now if they sell the Cybertruck at the same price as a gas F150 yes they will sell a few more but in my opinion it will never come close to any F150 or Silverado. They have a style that is just too far out for the average buyer. Mass appeal is a much better business strategy in my opinion.

Overall_Curve6725 2025-04-17 22:01

It’s called environmental embrittlement. Tesla cheaped out and used the wrong glue. It will fail on nearly all of the ugly trucks

Overall_Curve6725 2025-04-17 22:03

I didn’t use the wrong glue on an overpriced stainless steel monstrosity

xucchini 2025-04-17 22:04

Waiting for 2025 or 2026 AWD variant to drop to $70k OR allow for FSD transfer.

FrostyFire 2025-04-17 22:08

Which F150? The “F150” has over 20 models. They do this for stats. I promise the most expensive models don’t sell well.

FrostyFire 2025-04-17 22:10

Keep gobbling up that clickbait…1% of vehicles affected by cant rail recall. Do you think everyone stopped buying Toyotas too when they recalled literally every Tundra last year for a full engine replacement? They’ve been making vehicles for how many decades?

Overall_Curve6725 2025-04-17 22:11

Try getting your news from some place other than Fox enterprise

dubie4x8 2025-04-17 22:12

It’s just demo/test drive vehicles they are now discounting. Nothing worth getting worked up over.

CTrandomdude 2025-04-17 22:22

I never said anything about the quality or features. I think they did a pretty good job for a new model. I think Elon misjudged the market and was expecting this to be huge. Why else would he have designed the factory to be able to produce up to 250,000 per year. They sold around 40k last year. Reports are out now on the very low demand confirmed by reducing Cybertruck employees at the plants and now new price reductions to move the inventory. It’s a niche vehicle. They should have started with a mass market model. I think in Teslas eyes it will be seen as a failure.

How about 0% interest on the model Y

SDK9 2025-04-17 23:42

Not sure if that's a dis or a compliment, seeing as the Taco is the golden standard for trucks in the US (albeit the pricing on the new gen is crazy for an ICE vehicle).

9mmNATO 2025-04-17 23:43

You realize between the announcement and launch the Fed printed $9 TRILLION dollars. The price of stocks, housing, food and everything else all doubled.

9mmNATO 2025-04-17 23:47

You're simply too poor.

southsky20 2025-04-17 23:56

Steev182 2025-04-18 00:08

Honestly, it’s kind of both, it’s a really good small truck. During my test drive, it drove like a truck that had nicer suspension and better power, but still very lumbering and felt like a large vehicle, despite being smaller inside and in the bed than a Cybertruck.  The Cybertruck is big in the cab and has a longer bed, but feels smaller and drives like a bigger yet nimbler Model Y.

AffectionateArtist84 2025-04-18 00:12

The problem I see if even with the Tax Credit they aren't selling. There has been one in inventory for the last two months where I live. Same truck. Qualifies for the tax credit. No one has bought it

ChunkyThePotato 2025-04-18 00:14

It's literally the top-selling electric pickup truck, but ok. Your anecdote is certainly a lot more meaningful than actual sales numbers. I'm not sure how you even know it's the same truck.

[deleted] 2025-04-18 00:17

I think they were hoping to tap into more of a G Wagon type market than the contractor pick up truck market. I like seeing a company actually go to market with such a bold concept so I hope it does ok, I'm sure it doesn't help people are foaming at the mouth with hatred for them everywhere. I test drove one, it's a cool truck but needs a 2nd gen to refine it felt a bit prototype-y to me.

AffectionateArtist84 2025-04-18 00:18

I love the Cybertruck but I'm also trying to be realistic. Q1 sales of Cybertrucks were half of what they were in Q4 24. ~12k down to 6k.  It's not the best selling, Ford sold ~7k lightnings.  I know it's the same truck because I've been following the VIN.  I think Tesla waited too long to lower foundation series pricing and screwed them selves a bit. Not to mention Elon. Now with that being said I'll be watching incentives closely. Might pickup a beast if enough incentives come out.

gumby9 2025-04-18 00:29

40k and I’ll take one

ChunkyThePotato 2025-04-18 00:31

It's true that F-150 Lightning sold slightly more in Q1, so Cybertruck was \#2 (which is still very good and far from "it's not selling"). But in the previous two quarters it was \#1, and I think there's a good chance it returns to that spot in Q2 with the lower pricing.

AffectionateArtist84 2025-04-18 00:33

I think if they drop prices another 10k they might start selling... But with the brand image destroyed it's going to be very difficult for them to claw their way back. Gonna be a tough road from here. I love Tesla but it does not look good 😥

ChunkyThePotato 2025-04-18 00:41

Honestly, what are you talking about? "Start selling"? It's literally the \#1/\#2 top-selling electric pickup truck. "Image destroyed"? "Tough road"? You're literally talking about the \#1 top-selling electric car maker in the US by a massive margin. Where are you getting this idea that they're doing poorly from? I'm serious. Their sales numbers are extremely high.

ronntron 2025-04-18 01:04

Sidekicknicholas 2025-04-18 02:32

GreyGreenBrownOakova 2025-04-18 03:13

$39k was for the single motor variant, which hasn't been made yet. The cheapest variant you can buy was announced as $49,900. Aside from massive inflation, it's had very high demand. At the end of the day, Tesla will price it's vehicles at what customer's will pay.

8bit-wizard 2025-04-18 04:07

It's almost like people don't want to buy them for some reason.

glmory 2025-04-18 04:51

Was the top selling one. Lightning passed them last quarter.

ChunkyThePotato 2025-04-18 04:58

Yes, in Q1 it was slightly behind the Lightning at \#2. That's still obviously very good, given that it's above literally all other electric pickup trucks, and that it cost significantly more than the Lightning yet still nearly equaled its sales. But even so, I would guess that was a fluke and it will return to being ahead of the Lightning in subsequent quarters. That's yet to be seen though. \#2 is very good but obviously \#1 would be even better.

AshHouseware1 2025-04-18 08:34

I don't get this comment. Most truck owners tow something less than a handful of times per year. Why wouldn't folks be able to charge their truck overnight? Why would they need more than 230 mi worth of range on anything but a very occasional basis? No I wouldn't buy an EV truck if I'm driving it cross country each day. Conversely it's the perfect vehicle to own if I'm using it extensively, but not beyond its range, each day ... Plug it in overnight and do it again tomorrow.

luche 2025-04-18 13:25

not even that... but I want a round steering wheel and a turn signal stalk... it's not even something that can't easily add from existing parts, but they don't. I drove one and felt incredibly unsafe without these... and I've been very clear to them that I'm ready to buy one, add I don't care that others have gotten used to it... paying a bunch of money to not feel safe is a deal breaker. additionally, my m3 trade in value isn't that high, so I'm not really benefiting from that financially.. and I just recently found out that the exact homelink I've got in my m3 is available on literally every other Tesla except the Cybertruck? don't care how cheap it is, I'm not going to subscribe to a vendor for monthly access that requires connectivity through my personal wifi equipment just to open my garage door when a simple short wave signal has worked for many years without it. wtf. I'll stick with my m3... no brainer at this point. sucks, I was really looking forward to that truck.

How do you explain Cybertruck's sales compared to F-150 Lightning? "Never come close" is simply incorrect. In 2 out of the most recent 3 quarters, Cybertruck actually sold *more* than F-150 Lightning, despite being priced higher. That seems to disprove your analysis.

AztecWheels 2025-04-18 15:24

aptwo 2025-04-18 17:49

When did they promise the truck gonna be 30k???

CTrandomdude 2025-04-18 17:50

Because people trust Tesla more to do EV right! Thats why. The charging network, technology, software. Ford range is only 300 miles. Base starts at 62k and does not come with hardly any features compared to Tesla. Lariat which is nicely equipped at $76,900 and Platinum is $84,995. Even those don’t have the tech Tesla has. No air suspension. No four wheel steering. No comparison.

ChunkyThePotato 2025-04-18 18:02

So then people like Cybertruck more than Ford's F-150 offering... That seems contrary to what you were saying before.

death_hawk 2025-04-18 18:33

"Pretty" is so far down my list on reasons to buy a car. Functionality is my #1 as well. What's worse is that there seems to be so many other failures. I love my ModelY and would buy another if anything happened to it since so far it's been flawless. But the CT? I know the guy destroys things for views, but that hitch ripping off in the towing test was terrifying. And now reports of the back half ripping off in crashes.

coolcool23 2025-04-20 03:07

25% inflation from 2019 would be about $10k. That leaves a 50k truck and these are still being sold at the cheapest for $70k+...

eburnside 2025-04-20 22:11

I read a thread a while back sharing real-world towing mileage. I think the average with anything more than a small toy hauler was 100-110 miles. I can't imagine having to pull off and charge every 110 miles. It'd turn trips I've made in one day into three-day marathons

eburnside 2025-04-20 22:18

Because those few times you do tow, you don't want to have to stop every 110 miles? How hard is that to understand? I have tools in my garage I only use a few times a year - but when I get them out I still need them to do the job

eburnside 2025-04-20 22:55

I hope this trend continues and CT forces other manufacturers to up their game Also tho, while CT is best in a crash, it's still not safest overall Per IIHS the Rivian truck and Tundra are the safest trucks in 2025. wonder why CT didn't make the cut? https://www.motortrend.com/features/safest-trucks/ My guess is the tech for avoiding the crash in the first place > crash testing and the other trucks have better crash avoidance. (Tundra is radar? vs CT "vision"?)

I know I’m not the only one who was excited when the all wheel was announced at 50k then disappointed when it finally came out at 80k with lower stats than promised. If it was 45k then I would be interested still but this thing is insanely overpriced especially when considering the entire purpose of the design was to streamline the build for quick and cheap manufacturing.

It's an appreciating asset. 🫢

I tried to resist replying but you got so much wrong so confidently. So the CT came out in 2023 but I'll set my data to 2024 to match the mass produced $80k CT. \>between the announcement and launch the Fed printed **$9 TRILLION** dollars. **Wrong**: In the week of the Cybertruck event on Nov 2019, the FED balance sheet was **$4.05T**. When the FED ended QE in April 2022. their balance sheet was **$8.955** for a total added print of **$4.91T.** The Fed has since removed **$2.24T** from the economy resulting in a total balance sheet reduction of -27% since the peak and -47.5% of all FED covid printing. \>The price of **stocks**, housing, food and everything else all **doubled**. **Wrong**: S&P 500 was at **3,380** on Feb 20, 2020 and peaked at **6,147.43** in Feb 25' & is now 5,100. \>The price of stocks, **housing**, food and everything else all **doubled**. **Wrong**: Homes prices have **risen 47%** since the start of 2020 and have been static for months now. \>The price of stocks, housing, **food** and everything else all **doubled**. **Wrong**: U.S. **food prices rose by 23.6%** from 2020 to 2024 per the US Dept of Agriculture CPI measurements. \>The price of stocks, housing, food and **everything else all doubled**. Are these doubled prices in the room with us right now? sources [https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/bst\_recenttrends.htm](https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/bst_recenttrends.htm) [https://wolfstreet.com/2025/04/03/fed-balance-sheet-qt-33-billion-in-march-2-24-trillion-from-peak-to-6-72-trillion-lowest-since-may-2020/](https://wolfstreet.com/2025/04/03/fed-balance-sheet-qt-33-billion-in-march-2-24-trillion-from-peak-to-6-72-trillion-lowest-since-may-2020/) [https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/%5EGSPC/history/?period1=1579564800&period2=1745272646](https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/%5EGSPC/history/?period1=1579564800&period2=1745272646) [https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/us-home-prices-have-surged-47-since-start-2020](https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/us-home-prices-have-surged-47-since-start-2020) [https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/ASPUS](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/ASPUS) https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/chart-gallery/chart-detail?chartId=58350#:\~:text=From%202020%20to%202024%2C%20the,percent%20over%20the%20same%20period.

Pretty sure most tow something…never

greyscales 2025-04-22 19:54

For a truck that was supposed to have millions of "pre-orders", that's pretty steep.

greyscales 2025-04-22 19:56

And every one not sold sitting on lots loses a TON of money. Overall, the CT is currently losing a lot of money.

greyscales 2025-04-22 20:02

Does it? Rivian sold 8k R1T + R1S in Q1, Tesla sold 6400 CT. I can't find anything about the Rivian breakdown, but I don't think it's way less, possibly even more.

ChunkyThePotato 2025-04-22 20:13

Nope, not even close. R1T sold only 1,727 units in Q1: https://www.coxautoinc.com/market-insights/q1-2025-ev-sales/ SUVs sell way more than pickup trucks, so you could've guessed this result anyway knowing the combined number lol. But yeah, among pickup trucks, Cybertruck sells way more than R1T.

SodaAnt 2025-04-23 14:06

I think Tesla would have done great if they had made a no-frills EV van in a few different sizes to compete with the Rivian EDV and Brightdrop. Predictable routes means you don't need a big battery or very fast charging.

Bored-Collector-617 2025-04-23 22:34

Cybertrucks will be in Grocery Outlet stores by the Fall.

NWMike1 2025-05-03 12:07

It’s not for everyone at this time. When unsupervised FSD launches and you’ll gain that freedom while in a vehicle will be huge. For me I have experienced its reaction time during an emergency and it’s a life saver. I know that helping train it is going to make it better and launch sooner.

NWMike1 2025-05-03 12:16

There’s no public IIHS crash test data available for the Cybertruck as of 2025. Without IIHS testing, it lacks the validated crashworthiness scores needed to compete with the R1T and Tundra. That’s the only reason the Cybertruck did not beat them at this time. Vision will always win over Radar for sensors. As more miles and real world data flows into IIHS, their evaluations will evolve.
