It can just drive slower in those conditions. Especially for snow and rain where driving faster adds risk of slipping.
If fsd can’t see the road, sure as hell a human won’t either.

Self driving Tesla have been coming soon since 2016 when Tesla faked a self driving video or 2017 when Elon promised coast to coast autonomous demo.

It would have been much safer to keep other means of detection. Make the FSD safer than a human driving, not just as helpless.

I think the counter there is Waymo is highly geofenced and less generalized. I use FSD on mountain roads constantly
is geo fencing because of technical limitations or legal/policy reasons? i think it’s the latter, in which case this is just winning on technicality, if you can even call it that. i have a tesla and have been using FSD a lot, but i know its limitations. so i’ll believe this generalized thing when i see it on my car
I agree they shouldn't cheap out on that stuff especially now that LiDARs are getting cheaper. But detection won't make the tires grip better so in many cases you have to slow down anyways. Plus you have to consider visibility of your car by other drivers on the road who are still only using eyes.

One of the thing that freaked me out about the Tesla FSD is that it did NOT slow down on sharp curves (maybe it did, but not enough to my liking). There should be settings from "baby on board - normal - rally driver". There is no "feel for the road".
Delulu? Waymo is not a generalized platform. The approach waymo took is like when you do all the easy questions on the test first to make it look like you've completed more than you really have. It's good that waymo exists. But they are not playing on the same field.

It definitely does slow down but they do need to allow drivers to tune the ride more to their preference. Right now it's got a pretty heavy foot, but not everyone will appreciate that.

This is a really important point, and I think it goes even deeper than it might seem at first. FSD combines its neural network perception with a continuously updated 3D vector map to build a predictive model of the environment. In low-visibility conditions, this is one area where it can genuinely outperform human drivers. By drawing on knowledge from thousands of similar driving scenarios, the system can extend its predictions beyond what is immediately visible. During torrential downpours, you can see this in action by observing the on-screen visualization, which often maps out the road much farther than either the cameras or a human driver can directly perceive.

That’s a fair question, but they actually use very different approaches. Waymo is built around pre-existing, highly detailed map knowledge and localizes itself within that map to execute driving decisions. Tesla FSD is designed to dynamically perceive and respond to the environment without relying on prior mapping. This difference directly impacts generalization. * With a system based on pre-mapped environments, deployment becomes slow and expensive because every operational area needs to be mapped, validated, and continuously revalidated. * A system that dynamically perceives and adapts can theoretically scale indefinitely, which is why FSD has already been deployed broadly, including its expansion into China. There are pros and cons to each approach: * Pre-existing map knowledge can provide very strong performance initially within its operational domain. * Dynamic perception is harder to perfect but ultimately more flexible and scalable. So while legal and policy constraints do affect Waymo, it’s likely not the only reason they are limited to specific areas. Their core technical approach inherently makes large-scale generalization and rapid deployment much harder.
Especially when getting to know the beast. Many people move a touch closer to the inside of a curve. In the winter, the car staying centered and/or not slowing as much as expected makes me think it's going to drift out.

Not discrediting your underlying point, but this is *exactly* what humans are doing for everything, all of the time. After years of driving, many people will have had quite a statistically significant & diverse set of sample data for them to extrapolate patterns from. Not saying FSD can’t do that better than humans in the future, but right now we know it isn’t as good as many. (yes, poor/distracted/inebriated drivers are probably worse in many scenarios) Context window (I saw that reckless car 5min ago, I should be careful around it) and memory recall (this road has a huge pothole so I should go slower/change lanes/etc when approaching that spot) are two easy distinctions, I’m sure there’s plenty more like it. Does FSD need those things to be safe on every drive? No probably not. But those kinds of things are what will take a future version of FSD to the level that they can be trusted on a broad scale.
I have many times had the car dump control back to me when the cameras got obscured by weather, or made useless by solar glare. I could drive fine in those circumstances.
if a camera is blocked, the system is not under fusion and will have to react late. It's the same reason why automatic emergency braking doesn't work very well with just radar. You can't get around having to keep the cameras operating and clean.
Isn’t it really hard to make Teslas drift out without going stupid fast, unless the road is wet or icy?

When will HW3 cars get 13? I'm still v.12 and keep getting only updates with 'minor fixes.'
I noticed a sunglare problem in a 2018, but none in my 2025. Also no problem in a near blizzard.
That is the point. Canada has slippery conditions from November to April. Unpredictable from one stretch of road to the next. Same for visibility. My inner ear feels the drifting. Limiting to vision is dumb. Use additional sensors as appropriate to increase safety and comfort
I got FSD (HW3) in my 2019 only recently. Generally, I'm pretty damn impressed. But its a long way from perfect. Less than an hour ago, it gave up on turning left onto a blind side road that dropped steeply from the road it was on, and was invisible until you were on top of it. I had to seize control and get back on the right side of the road. A human would have found the turn a surprise too, but would have figured it out without edging past the point were the turn was possible. The car failed.
Taxes are complicated.
Haven’t experience that so far. There are some quirks though.
That's all wonderful but it still dumps the driving back to me and complains in even mild conditions. Hell the car can't even figure out the "AI wipers", half of the time its dry humping the windscreen when its clear. All I hear is how things are so superior with cameras yet it's not observed in the actual functionality. Cameras and computers are not the same as eyes and brains in the end.
X-Peng, with the best self driving in China besides Tesla, have removed lidar from their kit.
