Congrats to the Tesla engineers for this. I’m actually surprised Elon mentioned anything Tesla related these days.

The cost may be there but not sure on density or charging speed. Lucid Gravity went with panasonic 2170 because they can cool them easier for higher charging speed. Rivian went with 4690 for R2 for slightly more density.

Congrats. But BYD is eating Tesla's lunch at the moment, and is now pulling ahead in terms of cost per kWh, not to mention charging speed. At this rate, Tesla has two years before it will be totally irrelevant to the world outside the US.

But muh protectionism!
In a vacuum this sounds fantastic. Opening your eyes to what the Chinese are up to and it’s honestly embarrassing that our leaders’ defense is to shield Americans from that reality under the guise of bringing back industrialism.

Probably depends on how much of the raw material is being imported.

Tesla is doing just fine even in China.
They still buy cells or packs from others and this is them also working on it themselves.

Sure but it still charges slowly. My 4680 Model Y charges significantly slower than 2170 Model Ys.

> During Tesla’s first-quarter all-hands-on-deck meeting held a few weeks ago, CEO Elon Musk shared a number of recent milestones. One of them, as was also reiterated after the meeting by Michael Guilfoy, Tesla’s Giga Texas Director of Cell Manufacturing, is the fact that the company’s in-house 4680 battery cells have earned their place as the **lowest-cost battery cell produced per kWh.**
Does this also include the LFP packs from CATL? Could we potentially see a return of the base standard range RWD Model 3/Y with the 4680 cells, then?

What all are they using these in? Is it only the Cybertruck at this point? I have read old (1y+) articles that these would be used in the Semi in the *future* and in the MegaPack/ Superpacks at some point.

It’s easier to produce cheaper cells when you can pay your workers lower wages and obtain your cobalt from child slaves in the DRC

At this point damage from Elon antics far outweighs his occasional involvement in Tesla. He should step down from Tesla. He has other toys to play with.

I do care as a car owner and former investor. Both SpaceX and Tesla are revolutionary companies that should have brought a lot of positive things to US and entire world, if only Elon focused on them. Alas, not in this timeline. In this timeline we get tariffs, and China is going to benefit from all that - which is scary considering its dystopian nature.

Tesla’s are one of the most American made cars the Model Y is 70% component wise so there will be a hit on the remaining 30%, but that’s a lot lower than most car manufacturers in the USA and they are constantly trying to make supply chains as local as feasible.

It’s unfortunate, but if it wasn’t Elon running DOGE it’d be someone else. That said he has nothing to do with tariffs.
Also, Elon doesn’t run SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell does, and has for well over a decade.

Might be for the more affordable car, or they might be planning to phase it into all of their models.

Gwynne is a COO not a CEO. COOs are important but they don’t run the company. Elon is her boss and she was hired by Elon. When you are CEO knowing who to hire and fire is one of the most important decisions you will make.
Unfortunately if Democrats didn’t go full DEI and valued people by their competency rather than their sex, sexual orientation, and skin color they may be in the White House now. Of course if they had done that Elon might still be on their side. Battery cell production, building reusable rocket ships, and going to Mars is really hard. He needs to get the best regards of the sex or skin color. Unfortunately he is stuck on the political side that still believes in that.

I personally despise DEI. But let’s be honest, the only company still far ahead of China is Nvidia, which is founded by an Asian man, the type of person unlikely to end up CEO in US. It doesn’t matter if there is DEI or not, most folks who get hired or promoted CEO are totally incompetent in this country. Almost like Americans deep in their biology dislike when a competent person becomes CEO
Darkendone
2025-04-20 00:22
And SpaceX, Apple, Boeing, Microsoft, and all the other companies in markets that China has no real competitive company in.
As far as CEOs being competent I wonder by what makes you come to that conclusion.
[deleted]

CEOs that are promoted are different from founders. It is well known in US the promoted CEOs are the one who can BS and take credits for other people work but who cannot get anything done. Why do you think India looks like shit hole and yet they produce so many tech CEO in US, if they are really that good, shouldn’t they have more founders to start companies like BYD, TSMC and Nvidia ?
I can tell you dozen of Chinese companies outperforming US, from EVs, Drone, robotics, consumer tech. Apart from Nvidia and SpaceX, I don’t think many US companies can compete with China.
