That’s going to enable a lot of people to get one that were on the fence. Awesome. Just need single motor/feature removed even cheaper version next to get even more sales.

It's a truck with like off-road tires. It needs AWD as standard but at a lower price.

Probably a EV6 or ioniq 5. Lucid gravity is a bit higher than the Y price segment.

FallenCow 2025-02-04 04:30

Kia EV6 / Hyundai Ioniq are the closest competitors but there’s also Mustang Mach E, the new Jeep one, polestars, Audi E-tron, and the Rivian R2 eventually. Probably several more I’m forgetting. Personally I would look at a Lucid sedan or the Kia/Hyundai.

Congrats on making so much! FYI you can use your AGI of the year you buy it or the previous year. As long as one of those is under the limit, you should qualify for the credit.

mking1338 2025-02-04 10:47

They are made in America

tibersun 2025-02-04 11:39

I tow my 14ft enclosed job trailer every day with mine....

damonlebeouf 2025-02-04 11:40

you need to really look hard at their quality control. i love what rivian is doing but they are going through some major growing pains with qa/qc and it’s really effecting their customers.

basey 2025-02-04 11:58

Source? I believe this is false.

TheDovahkiinsDad 2025-02-04 12:06

And it shows

mking1338 2025-02-04 12:14

It doesn't have a flag I think they stamp made in America on it tho

SEMMPF 2025-02-04 12:17

Can’t imagine spending $70k+ on a car if you’re eligible for the tax credit but I know a lot do.

jekksy 2025-02-04 12:28

Yeah, drop it to $45k and I’ll get one. (We know you’re reading this, Tesla)

DJ_MICR0TRAP 2025-02-04 12:34

How is it eligible for the tax credit if it’s way more than $55k and doesn’t come with FSD? I thought adding FSD was the only way to be eligible above $55k

TheDovahkiinsDad 2025-02-04 12:43

I meant quality and reliability wise.

omegadown3 2025-02-04 12:46

Can you elaborate on this and provide sources? I think a lot of people are thinking about moving in this direction and could use more information.

omegadown3 2025-02-04 12:47

I’d contend that Tesla buyers are not typically average consumers.

Personal-Confidence1 2025-02-04 12:53

Agreed. Sources would be nice to see. I have a M3 which is almost paid for so I will be getting an R2 when it comes out. I like the direction that Rivian is taking.

they need to rid off tax credit for Hybrid.

WenMunSun 2025-02-04 13:27

There was a bill introduced but it requires a supermajority to repeal via congress and the republicans only have a simple majority (not enough votes basically). Then there's the issue of filibuster. As a result, the only way to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act and any related expenditures (such as the EV tax credits) will need to go through the Budget Reconciliation process which is in a couple of months. So it's very possible in 3-6 months the IRA tax credits are gone, but for now it's still here. If you're confused about any of these things, i highly recommend asking Grok or some other type of AI agent for answers - they are surprisingly effective for learning about government related processes.

magnumstg16 2025-02-04 13:27

Talking about quality control in a Tesla sub seems pretty ironic.

WenMunSun 2025-02-04 13:28

The limit for trucks is $80k

blobofsunshine 2025-02-04 13:31

Why, you don’t think a family making 300k should own a 80k car?

basey 2025-02-04 13:59

Yeah I know they want to repeal the EV tax credit, but I was simply responding to the claim that they want to keep the credit for Tesla only. I haven’t seen any source on that.

[deleted] 2025-02-04 14:03

damonlebeouf 2025-02-04 14:37

you mean the quality that has improved considerably since the company started? just like Rivian will be able to do the longer they stay in business? as it stands i wouldn’t put a dime into Rivian as much as i love the R1T until they can greatly improve their quality.

damonlebeouf 2025-02-04 14:37

go read the rivian sub and do some googling on their issues.

damonlebeouf 2025-02-04 14:38

[deleted] 2025-02-04 15:26

nevetsyad 2025-02-04 15:39

Right. Because single digit percent trucks go off-roading every year. They’re going to be used for commuting. Picking up groceries. Picking up kids. Maybe put an end table in the back for a friend every other year. That’s the stats for trucks, they’re pavement princesses. Have you noticed the bed length shrinking every year? Passenger compartment a little larger every refresh. It’s an SUV, and those aren’t even used for Sport use much anymore.

nevetsyad 2025-02-04 15:40

And no, base model has all season tires designed for a smooth ride and great efficiency. Core wheels all the way, unless you plan on mudding or rock crawling on the weekends, but then you don’t even want the Tesla off-road wheels. They’re like 10K most since you lose the tax credit by upgrading to them.

FleshlightBike 2025-02-04 16:32

I don’t think that’s what he’s trying to say. To be eligible for the tax credit, you need to make less than $150k single or $300k filed jointly. For single filers, to spend half your annual income on a car is probably not the best financial decision.

WenMunSun 2025-02-04 16:32

If you hate Tesla so much... why are you spending your precious free time browsing a Tesla subreddit? Don't you have anything better to do?

WenMunSun 2025-02-04 16:35

There are porbably alot of buyers that have actually been waiting for this, not as a matter of affordability but because they knew it was coming. And if you can save $7.5k, regardless of the fact that you can afford it, why not? It's just a smart financial decision no matter what.

WenMunSun 2025-02-04 16:36

You and 100 million other people lol

[deleted] 2025-02-04 16:37

10Bens 2025-02-04 16:40

They had a 6 week production pause back in November, but they've been back up and running since Jan 6th (as far as I know).

Iroh_in_a_cage 2025-02-04 16:58

No friends, no life’s, any attention is better than the loneliness. He’s a troll.

ChunkyThePotato 2025-02-04 16:58

Why not? Towing a large trailer hundreds of miles, sure, it's not practical for that. But throwing large objects in the bed or towing around a city? It's very practical.

cuthroat23 2025-02-04 17:21

You can still get the $7,500 off. Just lease and then buy out the lease.

AmbitiousFunction911 2025-02-04 17:27

Right. The income limit is not very reasonable for single filers to consider purchasing an $80K vehicle. For filing jointly, it's relatively reasonable to consider an $80K vehicle. I find the difference in limits odd. It should be more like $200k/$300k or just a flat $250K whether single or joint.

Tusker89 2025-02-04 17:44

If you bought a vehicle using the credit right now, could they later change it and you lose the credit you already used?

HarleyDS 2025-02-04 17:50

Is the number of $150k and $300k gross or net income?

PotatosAreDelicious 2025-02-04 17:58

Considering most couples own 2 cars. isn't it more like 160 in cars to afford the cars qualifying for the discount on a 300k salary? Its not any different imo.

AmbitiousFunction911 2025-02-04 17:59

not at all comparable really from a financial health perspective, never mind risk of single income vs. dual.

PotatosAreDelicious 2025-02-04 18:01

I cant even get up my driveway in the winter without 4x4. Nevermind the need for it on boat ramps etc. Offroadings not the only need for 4x4.

DJ_MICR0TRAP 2025-02-04 18:03

Ah gotcha I didn’t know that, thanks

Tiny-Blueberry-4026 2025-02-04 18:10

nevetsyad 2025-02-04 18:23

Yup. You’re not a majority. And have you tried true snow tires? They work better than all seasons on 4x4 - they can actually stop you.

Fantastic_Train_7270 2025-02-04 19:15

what, this statement makes no sense lmao, so if someone is making $140k a year, they couldnt't afford a 70k car? Where is this logic coming from? $140k a year = ~12k a month (after tax ~9k take home) a 70k car today financed at (6%, 4k down, 72 months) monthly payment is ~ 1.3k 9k - 1.3k = 7.7k left of income. How is someone not able to afford a monthly payment of ~14% of their total income a month?

Fantastic_Train_7270 2025-02-04 19:26

you are not paying off the entire car in one year.... like what? What are you guys spending money on besides rent/mortagage that you think spending 70k on a car with a salary of ~140k is a bad idea? What, you own a million dollar house with a monthly mortage of ~4k or something? Even then you could still afford a monthly payment of ~1.3k on a car with take home income of ~9k a month. I'm confused.

Fantastic_Train_7270 2025-02-04 19:29

gross

Sebas718 2025-02-04 19:47

Request it in your Tesla account (I think Web browser, not sure about the app), they ask for ACH info to direct deposit you the refund

oasiscat 2025-02-04 20:54

Seriously. Not paying 80k for a scratch magnet. EDIT: Not paying 40k either. Hence the free wrap lol

Plexicle 2025-02-04 21:09

Like any tax credit, it's based on AGI. So it's after all of your deductions and stuff.

Fantastic_Train_7270 2025-02-04 23:52

Thanks, Mr. Rich guy

ThMogget 2025-02-05 02:18

We are not talking about what we need. What you need is two good feet and a week to get up that snowy hill. We are talking about what it takes to compete against similar items at a similar price. Sure a little budget Chevy Colorado might have a 2WD option, but above about 45k I expect all trucks and SUVs to just include it regardless of their off-roading pretensions. My little 25k Jeep Compass includes it. My 45k Model 3 includes it and no one expects it off-road. And none of those have compromised their range and handling to sport offroady tires. Electric trucks in Cybertruck territory start having things like 3 or 4 motors and locking differentials even in the onroady ones. I dunno what it takes to get Cybertruck prices/features in line, but slashing basic powertrain is not it. Does the base model need to drive itself? Does it need bulletproof glass? Does it need height-adjustable suspension? Does it need rear steering? Rear kids interior screen? Extra range? Etc.

nevetsyad 2025-02-05 02:24

Show me a 3 or 4 motor truck with locking diffs for under 70K. Much less 50-60 if Cybertruck did a single motor version with some features removed. A 50k work truck (58 before tax credit) with no paint to worry about, a simple interior with no heated and cooled seats, single motor, cloth interior, etc. would save companies PILES. My neighbor is wait for something in that territory to purchase (stripped down Cybertruck he says it perfect for him, just wants the fuel and maintenance savings, doesn’t really care about anything else) Regardless, statistically, when you lower the price, you open the product up to more buyers. Exponentially usually.

fluffyykitty69 2025-02-05 07:20

I’m waiting for the Scout. Haven’t decided if I’ll go full EV or the EREV but if they can keep price where they’ve stated, it’ll be similar in size to the R1S but $20k cheaper.

g1aiz 2025-02-05 08:05

They have been selling non founders for >3 months now. They still have some of those and now give a free wrap to people who take one.

Fantastic_Reveal_599 2025-02-05 08:59

It’s not financially smart to buy an 80k truck if your income qualifies for the tax credit.. between the price tag and depreciation you just made yourself poor

[deleted] 2025-02-05 13:51

How do I get this in Australia 😂

rainer_d 2025-02-05 14:32

Even smart people can be surprisingly un-smart with car-purchases. People working in dealerships know horror-stories of poor people making even dumber decisions when it comes to cars. I got my used Model 3 from a seller who had originally sold it to someone else - but their financing fell through. If you need financing on a 30k car and the bank doesn't approve it - then that should really give you pause.

greyscales 2025-02-05 21:05

Why should the government pay for rich people's cars?

New-Natural-9288 2025-02-05 22:40

Yes, 14% of income going to towards a car a is lot.

elchurnerista 2025-02-06 07:09

How convenient timing...

battleop 2025-02-06 18:58

If you're making $140k/yr and go out and buy at $70k car odds are that you're equally fiscally irresponsible in other areas as well. I don't care how much you make. A $1300/mo car payment is ridiculous.

Fantastic_Train_7270 2025-02-06 19:29

Makes no sense, payment on a car is relative to how much you make. Making 140k/year and buying a 70k car is equivalent to making 70k/year and buying a 35k car, and equivalent to someone making 50k a year buying a 25k car. Someone making 100k a month can afford a 1.3k car payment. You are saying it's insane for anyone to buy a car 70k at all, doesn't matter if they are billionaires. Crazy

Fantastic_Train_7270 2025-02-06 19:34

to each of their own i guess. I'm just curious what most are spending the other 86% of their income on.

Not_In_Rush 2025-02-06 19:58

Capitalism at its peak.

battleop 2025-02-06 20:22

If you're making $100k/month you can afford to pay cash for a $70k car. Just because you can afford it on paper it doesn't mean you should. But you do you continuing to make banks and credit card companies money hand over fist.

ColdAsHeaven 2025-02-07 20:40

Why? Hybrids are fantastic. And with rising electricity rates/Updated NEM guidelines in California at least, hybrids are better buys than EV's rn
