Rear cross chime finally coming? What does that mean exactly

RealTange1 2025-01-25 20:04

They added rear cross traffic alerts where the video will have a red edge if someone or something is detected. I assume they are adding a chime to when it detects cross traffic. I know I am not always looking at the display when backing up. I use it and mirrors.

Maultaschenman 2025-01-25 20:15

Android Wear OS app please :(

ScottECH93 2025-01-25 20:18

Finally, no more routing to a supercharger to force it to preheat for another fast charger. That was never an optimal workaround.

[deleted] 2025-01-25 21:08

Nice, this is critical for me for when I go into more remote areas in my province and there are no Tesla superchargers but plenty of provincial DC fast chargers provided by our local electricity corporation (BC Hydro). They even have some that are 350kW!

terran1212 2025-01-25 21:10

Tesla catching up to an early 2000s car now

RealTange1 2025-01-25 21:22

Yup. Still the only car I've owned that actually evolved over time. Trade offs I suppose.

terran1212 2025-01-25 21:29

Yeah I agree but this is a safety issue

schuhmi2 2025-01-25 21:48

While vision should always take priority, the audio warning will be great if someone changes in that split even you change looking between over location and another

RealTange1 2025-01-25 21:49

Safety issue? Cars didn't have this for I don't know - 75 years - And it wasn't a problem. It's not mandated to have it. It adds some measures of confidence sure but I wouldn't call a car that doesn't have it unsafe.

terran1212 2025-01-25 21:50

Well by that logic why own a Tesla at all? Most of its safety features weren’t in cars for 75 years either.

RealTange1 2025-01-25 21:58

Agree! It's a positive addition.

ChuqTas 2025-01-25 22:09

Exaggerating to make a point? None of my previous cars, 2003, 2009, 2009 and 2012 had this.

nevetsyad 2025-01-25 22:14

I mean, it's using cameras that it shows you, to give you cross traffic alerts. Only cameras it doesn't show you, are cameras you can see by looking left or right. Nothing shocking here.

But the real question is can we turn off preheating? What if I don't want to use that much extra juice or the BMS is calibrated slightly off? Great add, but greater add is the ability to turn this off and wait to use shore power to heat the battery.

LurkerWithAnAccount 2025-01-26 01:36

My 2010 Subaru and 2014 FIAT only had analog backup cameras

ken830 2025-01-26 01:57

Definitely not common in early 2000s cars. And all other cars use dumb radar sensors and simple, dedicated logic just like the blind spot monitoring. The car doesn't have actual awareness of its surroundings.

[deleted] 2025-01-26 02:22

Yeah driving the wrong way for an hour was super annoying.

AWildDragon 2025-01-26 06:02

Per someone on x who has it it won't show up in the chargers section but when they navigated to an electrify America it started to precondition. Some backend search maybe? Plugshare in the backend?

d8_thc 2025-01-26 11:45

Yeah I love how my early 2000s car drives itself too.

maowai 2025-01-26 14:09

The Tesla traffic alert doesn’t work until it’s way too late and the car triggering the alert is right upon me. The feature on my 2015 Subaru detects cars much earlier. I drive both on a regular basis and the Subaru with “dumb radar sensors” and “simple logic” does its job much better. Cheap, simple dedicated hardware and logic beats “actual awareness” for this purpose.

docwood2011 2025-01-26 15:23

Exactly the truth. I was excited for the feature but I found it's actually almost ironically more dangerous now. Because I think I'm going to see red if there's an obstacle, the other day there was literally a person walking probably four or five steps away from being in my path and no alert at all. Gives you a false sense of warning. They really need to improve it.

Rev-777 2025-01-26 16:10

The entire idea of preheating is to condition the battery so charging is faster, therefore cheaper. If you want to turn it off, drop a pin right beside where you’re going and navigate there.

These-Flamingo-5088 2025-01-26 17:31

And I would add that reducing the audio volume when engaged in reverse is also a very thoughtful addition that I’ve come to appreciate.

Spud2599 2025-01-26 17:54

What's the hands free trunk?

davispw 2025-01-26 19:13

> it wasn’t a problem But it *was* a problem. Collisions while backing out happened all the time, as well as pedestrians/children tragically run over. Just because it wasn’t a problem *for you* doesn’t mean we shouldn’t use (and yes, sometimes mandate) technology to improve safety.

RealTange1 2025-01-26 19:18

We all do it - turn down the music so I can see better. It's strange but true.

HybridAlien 2025-01-26 19:39

So another update where you have the car but not the newest phone. Sighh

ken830 2025-01-26 20:33

Nothing in my reply compared performance. And, like rain sensors, you are likely correct about this today. But it will be improved over time. And ultimately, full awareness of its surroundings is the end-point of what a vehicle will become in the future. And this is the path to that future.

nachx 2025-01-26 21:33

I'm confused, as my car has been performing the preheat when I have added a third party fast charger for a while. The problem for me is that some of the third party fast chargers that I use regularly don't appear in the list of charging locations in the cars navigation.

blindkowean 2025-01-26 21:41

Standing by the front or rear for three seconds will initiate a chime that the trunk or frunk will open

MacorgaZ 2025-01-26 22:36

I always thought that was already a feature? If you clicked on the "the battery is preheating" message, it dismisses the message at least, and I thought it also stopped the preheating itself but now I'm not sure.

Spud2599 2025-01-26 23:58

OK, will it work better than me trying to get into my front door?!?!?! 🤣🤣🤣 Wonder if there's a way to turn this off. Especially during tailgate season, there could be people reasonably hanging out by the back of your car in the parking lot (assuming you are near your car) and that would be going off every 10 seconds...

Swastik496 2025-01-27 00:58

huh? Just add the SC as a stop after the third party station. FSD still works, directions are correct etc

Swastik496 2025-01-27 01:00

faster != cheaper. Especially with the SC pricing update where it only bills you for power that’s added to the battery, not total use (started in mid october from what i can tell)

[deleted] 2025-01-27 01:43

Where I'm going I have to drive in the opposite direction of the supercharger for an hour. There are no supercharges on the other side of it.

LightningByte 2025-01-27 09:56

They have been shown on the map for a few years now, at least in Europe. For some networks they even show how many of the chargers are free/occupied.

Hyjynx75 2025-01-27 10:09

I am envious. There doesn't appear to be any integration here in Canada. I live on the east coast which is a bit of a Super Charger wasteland. Driving long distances through northern and eastern Nova Scotia and Newfoundland can be an awful experience especially during tourist season.

hellphish 2025-01-27 15:55

I don't think it does. There's an audible difference in the sounds the motor makes while preconditioning, and that sound doesn't go away when I dismiss the the alert.

ericdabbs 2025-01-27 17:13

That is stupid workaround to begin with. I am glad that Tesla is adding this feature to integrate into the Tesla maps because even though it is not a supercharger it shouldn't punish the driver to have to fake charging at a supercharger that is not along the route just to trigger preconditioning. Personally I think they should add a preconditioning shortcut in the menu where they have like heated seats, wipers, etc to have a dedicated button to force preconditioning on demand.

Swastik496 2025-01-27 18:19

They should.

spankmydingo 2025-01-28 03:02

I’m on the latest 2025.2. Chime doesn’t seem to work for me. I see the red alert but no sound. Just me?

copperwatt 2025-01-28 03:17

There were still cars in 2012 being made without *backup cameras*. I don't buy that everyone else has chimes.

Technical_Gift_2012 2025-01-28 14:04

There is IONITY fast charger on my route that doesn’t show in the charger nav menus, but if I search for it as a normal destination and select it , it starts preconditioning , I don’t believe it did this before

raygundan 2025-01-29 22:20

> faster != cheaper. Definitely not always the case. Whether they bill by energy used or by time spent charging varies by state. If it's by time, preconditioning may save you money by shortening charge time. If it's by energy, preconditioning will likely cost you more by consuming energy you need to replace at the charger.

Swastik496 2025-01-29 22:33

There are 0 states that bill by time anymore. NEVI required billing by kWh and all states are forced to roll out chargers using NEVI funds. TN, WI and the other final holdouts passed laws allowing kwh billing in mid-late 2024. Tesla has fully moved to per kwh billing now from what I know.

raygundan 2025-01-29 22:38

Nice! I missed that change, but it's a good one. Appreciate the correction!

ILoveWhiteBabes 2025-01-30 04:38

Can someone please rewrite this in proper English? I’m surprised it got 10 upvotes as I don’t know what they’re saying exactly.

couldbemage 2025-01-31 02:58

Backup camera on a 2014 Prius was a 2k option. Cross traffic alert not offered at all. People acting like these are universal features for decades are from another planet.

couldbemage 2025-01-31 03:00

2020 Mercedes work van: no cross traffic chimes.

FreeZombies 2025-02-09 15:02

Does anybody managed to turn on preheating on destination? 😅 I thought that there will be simple way.
