They need taller computers

You can’t fix an electrical short with a software update lol

It's definitely a real issue. Another [article](https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/10/24340689/tesla-rearview-camera-recall-self-driving-computer-short-circuit) I was reading about it had claimed over 600 vehicles requiring board replacements as a software fix could no longer be applied - assuming it meant hardware was fried?
If you actually read the article it stated that it’s a combination of HW and SW fixes. My HW4 comp failed 1 week after delivery.

Yeah it was an AP-4 fault they were able to diagnose over the air. It's happened to so many cars that they don't have enough parts. My car sat at the dealership for 6 weeks. They gave me a loaner. I got the car back last week. Tesla ended up giving me 4 months of complimentary full self-driving.
It's the first time they issued the recall.
I’m curious if the software fix will make it impossible for the board to short or just very unlikely.
“Recall” = Software update
So dumb to call it recall if its fixable by software.
Hate farming is Reddit's favourite feature.
Except this one actually requires a replacement of the HW4 computer board if the software update didn’t fix it.
They only need to replace the ones that were already fried.
This one isn’t a software update
This is actually a great illustration of what a recall is. It is an order to repair an issue. If the repair can be done via a software update, and the manufacturer can push the update over the air, there is no physical recall. If the over the air software fix fails, then the manufacturer needs to take the car back to repair it.
Does that imply that my Model Y, which currently has computer failure, must join the long queue?
Yeah. I would insist upon a loaner. I would share that you don't feel safe in the vehicle especially without a backup camera which is required safety equipment in all new vehicles.
SC rejected me, I will try again, it’s very painful to drive model Y without cameras.
Agreed. I was given one on my second try.
They designed it to be dependent on cameras and to train you to expect to perform all actions by looking at the screen, so yeah, they can't really argue now that it's not essential
Whoever drives a Model Y with that tiny rear window knows exactly why the rearview camera is essential. But there is always some random, ridiculous person who keeps saying the driver should learn how to use mirrors and blah blah.
Just got mine fixed, once it was appointment day they had it fixed in 3 hours for me. Just a simple computer swap and she’s as good as new. Took me about 3 weeks of waiting for a new computer though and I “toughed” it out.
Did they update the software for you? My FSD update was withdrawn.
I am on 13.2.1 but I was on that when the computer crashed.
Mine failed a couple of weeks after upgrading to 12.5.6, so this is not something that a software update can fix as many claimed, it is a hardware defect.
This is incorrect. The computers with the latest software still got fried. Circuit boards must be replaced.
Only on the few that already got fried in a software update. Not 239,00 cars though.
> I am on 13.2.1 but I was on that when the computer crashed. This post, the software with FSD 13.2.1 didn’t fix it. My car’s computer failed when it was on 2024.33.40. Neither was fried during software update.
It is sometimes, but mine was not. The cameras came back but I had no auto pilot or any of the other nice features still.
Maybe yours was not completely fried like mine. I was explicitly told on the phone that it’s a known hardware issue, and only computer replacement can fix it. software update won’t help.
Oh no I was told the same. Software didn’t bring mine back either. I just believe that some people had software only.
Interestingly I had my 2025 highland in service for something else and they found a "loose connection" on the computer. They opted to order and replace the computer to avoid the computer shorting and failing in the future.
Anything HW4 is suspect.
its not a software update so it seems like you are doing the farming
