Most likely this is just outside the US since Tesla is currently not using imported CATL packs here due to tariffs and credit eligibility.

[deleted] 2024-11-07 16:09

2.5 more kWh is like an extra 17km at 140Wh/km.

aBetterAlmore 2024-11-07 16:36

Yeah that’s an incremental change most people won’t ever notice or care about

ParksNet30 2024-11-07 16:41

A lot of these changes matter at the margins when you are road tripping or don’t have a home charger.

It's less than the amount of range I've lost in my two years of ownership (440km->410km).

dopestar667 2024-11-07 16:48

The increased range isn't really the benefit here, but increased performance and charging speed and likely reduced cost make it the choice for Tesla.

dhanson865 2024-11-07 16:59

Higher capacity not larger, may actually take up less physical space in the car, but is likely the exact same size.

laplasz 2024-11-07 17:06

Model 3 is the best choice among all the EVs (and among ICE) - these improvements just make it even better

deeperest 2024-11-07 17:06

Incremental change is how things happen. Expecting monumental shifts all the time will only leave you disappointed.

Quin1617 2024-11-07 17:12

Especially since you can get one that’s a few years old for under $20k. Now once the cheaper one comes out next year, that’ll be unbeatable.

nadderballz 2024-11-07 17:13

time is the most valuable thing. not the minor range increase.

Quin1617 2024-11-07 17:13

Smartphones are a perfect example of this.

IAmDiGlory 2024-11-07 17:17

Totally. Continuing to improve incrementally while trying to bring the cost of cars down is perhaps the right strategy

feurie 2024-11-07 18:10

Then wait for another year and have two changes. Last year there was a few percent efficiency increase from the Model 3 refresh.

feurie 2024-11-07 18:11

Time doing what? Have a bigger battery means you drive longer without charging or charging range while at a low percent.

nadderballz 2024-11-07 18:15

did you read the article?

twinbee 2024-11-07 19:21

Or for round trips in super hot/cold weather on super grippy tires where diverting to a supercharger could cost an extra hour.

sinrakin 2024-11-07 19:26

How much has the older battery decayed in capacity on those, though?

[deleted] 2024-11-07 19:55

Either that or they are planning on the credit going away and this is a way to reduce costs immediately

JustWonderingHowToDo 2024-11-07 20:16

The model y with the blade battery charges faster than the model 3 smaln battery. It only takes 18 min from 10-80%. It keeps the 170 kW charging for longer so the average charge speed is 140 kW. Mayby it is the same battery model 3 is getting?

Confident_Ad_2899 2024-11-07 20:29

Quick question: should I go for a 2019 SR or a 2022 SR provided they have around 40k miles each? 2019 is about 5k cheaper where I’m at.

JustWonderingHowToDo 2024-11-07 20:40

Back in April [CATL announced a 1000 km battery](https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/tesla-supplier-reveals-battery-with-1000km-of-range-super-fast-charging) that can charge at 4C. If the Tesla CATL 6M battery is the same then a 62.5 kWh battery will charge at 4•62.5 = 250 kW.

JustWonderingHowToDo 2024-11-07 20:46

And with a consumption of 140 Wh/km that result in a equivalent charge speed of 1785 km/h, or adding 300 km range in 10 min

Quin1617 2024-11-07 20:48

Definitely a ‘22. While Teslas have great longevity you’re still better off with a longer warranty. 6 years vs 3. It’s why I’ll never buy an ‘18 M3, I don’t have $13k for a new HV battery if I happen to get unlucky.

Quin1617 2024-11-07 20:52

I’m talking 2020-23, so very little as most I’ve seen have under 60k. Hell I saw one with 30k the other day.

MisterBumpingston 2024-11-07 20:56

So roughly 8 hours of sentry use.

New-Connection-9088 2024-11-07 21:00

LFP isn’t universally better. They lose more range in the cold, for example. They also have lower energy density, meaning more weight for the range. [Note that the previous LR Y and 3 is already using LFP. This pack is an upgrade.] They also operate at lower voltage, meaning these probably can’t be used in the performance models.

JustWonderingHowToDo 2024-11-07 21:01

So you refer to the charge speed?

jacob6875 2024-11-07 21:38

Mines over a year old and 26k miles. I’m at 3% degradation.

VictorHb 2024-11-07 21:45

Yeah, but it's a welcome change during the winter or while towing. Especially when charging as the fast part of the charge will contain more range

[deleted] 2024-11-07 22:15

if Elon keeps kissin Don’s behind… he’ll get the battery thing exempt

aBetterAlmore 2024-11-07 22:32

That’s not how the legal system works. The exemption must be valid or other companies will go to court

shigydigy 2024-11-07 22:35

What cheaper one? I thought next year we're just getting the Model Y refresh. Where was a cheaper Model 3 announced?

socbrian 2024-11-07 22:41

Not unless you control the legal system, 4d chess

[deleted] 2024-11-07 22:52

it’s sad… but the president has the supreme court behind him all his crimes have dropped already

aBetterAlmore 2024-11-07 23:10

The Supreme Court continues to be the head of an independent branch of government (judicial).  Acting like all of a sudden “the president has the supreme court behind him” when there has always been a political leaning (one way or the other) doesn’t change things. Let’s not be melodramatic.

[deleted] 2024-11-07 23:50

ok… i hope u r correct remind me in 1 year

TheSlackJaw 2024-11-08 00:00

It's been years since the LFP/RWD pack was updated, so I'm not surprised to hear that this is on the cards. I expected a bigger jump though based on how much LFP has improved in recent years.

Schnort 2024-11-08 01:48

I have a 2018 LR-RWD and my battery has had a bit of a slide the past year. When I charge to 80%, I'm at~ 216 miles, which works out to be ~270 miles for 100% I've only used a supercharger 3-5 times, and usually charge to 80% when I get down to ~30%

Schnort 2024-11-08 01:50

The battery should be warranted for 8 years/100k miles.

Quin1617 2024-11-08 02:16

Yep. Or 120k miles for the LR. ‘18s only have 2 years left, or ~1 depending on build date. Personally, $5k isn’t worth losing 3 years of warranty. 6 is plenty, as I’d almost definitely have another car by the time it runs out.

dtpearson 2024-11-08 09:12

LFP are not universally poorer either. CATL has versions that mitigate most of the compromises in density, cold and charging deficiencies.

Every_Tap8117 2024-11-08 10:59

Give the EU M3P a real battery already. I really want to swap but not for a slower car compared to US spec M3P

New-Connection-9088 2024-11-08 11:25

I agree that CATL's designs are very interesting and improve upon the issues. They're *still* inferior to NMC in the areas I highlight. Only customers can decide if the benefits outweight the costs.

pedros430 2024-11-08 11:47

This is a 4.1% increase

AlwaysStayHumble 2024-11-09 00:45

That would be awesome.

glmory 2024-11-10 01:43

That’s not how it works. You stack the Supreme Court then make the letters mean whatever you want them to.

lauranyc77 2024-11-10 08:38

No melodrama. The conservative judges have all already kissed 4547's ring

lauranyc77 2024-11-10 08:39

Who is stacking what court ? Its already stacked with loyal servants

MoonManny 2024-11-10 11:49

Have they confirmed a cheaper model? People here keep saying the model 2 was canceled and replaced by the robotaxi

Quin1617 2024-11-11 01:34

To quote Elon directly during the recent earnings call: **“So, regarding the vehicle business, we are still on track to deliver our affordable models starting in the first half of 2025.”** Later on he was asked “The first one is, is Tesla still on track to deliver the more affordable model next year, as mentioned by Elon earlier? And how does it align with your AI and product road map?” And his and another guy’s answer was: >!“Sure. I mean, as Elon and Vaibhav both said, we are on plan to meet that in the first half of next year. Ambition has always been to lower the cost of our vehicles to increase the adoption of sustainable energy and transport. Part of that is lowering the cost of our current vehicles, which is where all of the personally owned vehicles that we sell today come in.”!< >!”But the next stage in that, really as it fits into AI road map, is when we bring in robotaxis, which lowers the initial cost of getting into an EV — and those — that’s really where we see the marriage of EV road map and the AI road map.”!< Elon: >!”Yeah. It will be like with incentive. Sub $30K, which is kind of a key threshold.”!<

Hot_Mess_2244 2024-11-13 17:20

Actually, that would be supersonic!

King_Prone 2024-11-15 02:39

wow. my performance/long range pack only holds like 66kwh of charge.

Kekafuch 2024-11-20 00:23

Fingers crossed it’s physically smaller and lighter!
