The Tesla Model 3 Performance is not here to mess around. Some useful upgrades for 2024 make the Model 3 a better overall car, but have fun trying to think about that when the acceleration is trying to cause grayout. In our testing, the 2024 M3P blasted to 60 mph in a staggering 2.8 seconds and and continued through the quarter-mile in 11.0 seconds at 125 mph. With Pirelli P Zero PZ4 summer tires underfoot, the Model 3 averaged a reasonable 0.92 g of stick on our skidpad. Pretty much everyone liked the M3P’s strong brakes too. Stops from 70 mph require 163 feet; from 100 mph, it’s 338 feet. What do you think of the 2024 Model 3 Performance? * Andrew Krok, Car and Driver Senior Reviews Editor

Which color did you get?
Picked a gray one up about a month ago too coming from a very well-worn mk6 gti that I loved. The new M3P is a lovely car with blistering speed, lots of grip, and nice tech, but man was mine not put together well. Sadly didn’t notice until after delivery either. Paint defects, poorly aligned trim, and rattles around the dash and steering wheel. I don’t regret buying it one bit, but I wish Tesla QC was better
Congrats on the purchase! We're definitely big fans of the Highland upgrades—the cars perform better, are quieter, and have markedly better interior build quality as you noted. That's a shame about the paint; while I don't believe our test car had much in the way of paint issues (if any), I think we can all agree that owners shouldn't need to bring magnifying glasses or paint depth gauges to take delivery of a car. Then again, we've had our fair share of six-figure automobiles at the office with more orange peel than a Kroger produce section, so, perhaps everybody could stand to boost their efforts there. * Andrew Krok, Car and Driver Senior Reviews Editor
As an owner I agree that's an exceptionally fair review. Good job. Personally the screen grew on me to the point it isn't a huge concern but a dashboard would certainly be nice to have (or better yet a HUD).
Do you guys do any EMF comparisons between EVs ?
I won't be buying one of these, as the Canadian version is down some 50 horsepower over the other markets. Perhaps I could import an American one but i'm not sure how that plays with warranty.
At this point I think there are enough publicly available stories of taking delivery that most owners should, at the least, have a small mental list of what to look for upon receipt. When we test cars, our sample size is usually just 1, so we can't and don't draw wide-scale conclusions from individual-car-level stuff like paint or dash rattles. That being said, we always recommend potential buyers do their due diligence—whether that's driving multiple cars and competitors, or knowing to keep an eye for potential cut corners. Our opinions may help guide someone down a certain path, but it's up to each buyer to get themselves across the finish line and feel comfortable in their purchase. * Andrew Krok, Car and Driver Senior Reviews Editor
Agreed on the HUD. I don't mind the screen I feel I always know the speed I'm going. I don't care for reverse and drive being on the screen but I use the beta for reverse and drive and it's usually accurate. I would love them to add an option to detect things like a 3 point turn or switch from reverse to drive automatically after stopping as I still have to change it myself which is annoying.
The s and the x already have the 3 point turn feature.
We do not.

Haven’t heard this yet. What’s the reasoning behind the 50hp decrease in Canada?
I've had mine since July. As other have said, the paint quality is below industry standards, with my Ultra Red vehicle having several small spots of exposed primer under the clear on the back of the car. It's otherwise been an awesome vehicle to live with on the daily. It feels like putting a jet pack on for your commute.
Unless you have an EU M3P which is gimped because of the battery and is ever so slightly slower than the outgoing. Not all 3s are made equally.
The best part about these is you can just buy them online and pick them up. You don't have to wait 3 years for the markups to calm down so you can hope to get one in your preferred color at a dealer within a 500 mile radius.
Yeah totally - sorry you’ve had to deal with that, especially when you’ve spent extra on the color 🤦♂️
How many miles do you think the tires are going to last when you drive these cars with a lead foot?

I just bought a new 24 M3p in black almost 2 months ago. Everything about the car F-ing amazing. But I have two complaints. When I picked the car, the paint was terrible. Scratches, door dings, and the actual paint quality is horrendous. It took about a month and a half but it’s finally in the paint shop. (Under Warranty) They told me it’s going to take 3 weeks to fix. I miss the car so much. While I’m used to the turn signals buttons, I still think they’re stupid and I wish I had normal turn signals. it’s currently sitting in the body shop to fixed.
I was getting a small adjustment at the service center and someone was there trying to get their Quicksilver paint fixed with the same issues I have. White is the best because it hides issues the best.
Model 3 performance is such a great car for the money.
Europe is the same. All MIC stock. Noticeably less performance than US models.
>While I’m used to the turn signals buttons, I still think they’re stupid and I wish I had normal turn signals. You can always buy after market stalks.
I did think about that, but I have to save money for replacement tires. 😅
>I did think about that, but I have to save money for replacement tires. 😅 Chill mode.
It's the battery pack they use outside of the USA. It has a lower peak discharge, resulting in noticeable performance throttling vs the US Spec.
Hello, the article you guys published yesterday ‘Every Hands-Free Driving System Available in 2024’ contains a factual error. The article states 'Both Autopilot and Full Self-Driving are hands-on only.’ However, as of FSD 12.4, attention monitoring has switched to vision-based, no longer relying on a steering wheel nag, which makes FSD hands free, as your hands are no longer required on the wheel. See the attached screenshot below: https://preview.redd.it/q7s1ecnmldwd1.png?width=1290&format=png&auto=webp&s=9ca1b4a168e33b233c32a97ffe3eea1549d116cf Currently, over 96% of eligible cars are on the [12.5.4.1](http://12.5.4.1) branch (source: TeslaFi), indicating that hands-free FSD has been launched to the general public. Please let me know if I made any errors in pointing out this error.
For some reason, my normal and chill mode doesn’t work 🤷🏼♂️. 😝
I miss that they didn’t include a gear simulation mode like in the i5n, noise (even fake) it’s an important part of the excitement of driving a high performance car
Way easier than buying a Toyota Sienna. We live in strange times.
Better build quality but a car that’s *only* as fast as the outgoing model? Maybe not a trade everyone would make but after four Teslas and rattles upon rattles, I’d go for a more solid one at the cost of .3 seconds to 60 mph for sure.
Honestly the real problem isn’t even the numerous defects at delivery. It’s that it’s also insanely thin and delicate so you end up with tons of road rash after a couple of years compared to other brands. I had a THUMB PRINT embedded in my 2018 Model 3 paint on the trunk 😂 My 2024 Y is way better in terms of delivery defects but it’s already showing rash from random pebbles hitting the doors when driving.
True and agree but god help you if you need service. In a massive market like DFW, they are scheduling appts 65 days out.
3 point feature will come soon to the Model 3 for sure. It's already on the S/X.
There's already been a 2024 performance battery pack failure that a user on here.
I cancelled order but of exactly what you said after I drove my mates M3P 24. I need that itch scratched so hoping somebody nails it soon.
That’s when you gotta get to know the front desk guy at Tesla service center 😉
Different battery pack that may be better for cold climates from what ive read.
Car rattle as shit, dashboard, back pillar, steering, the plastic cover between the steering and the dashboard. SC 6 weeks away appointments. It nice to drive but with this rattle and bad quality I just stopped enjoying it. How on earth they still have this rattles issue, everybody says this new reengineered way better, but it's same bad quality as my old 2019 Model 3 performance
Why is this such a bummer? Help me understand your mindset. If you care about your car so much that you can see minor defects in the paint job that most people would never notice, then surely you're at least going to put PPF on it to protect it from rockchips/normal wear and tear, no? And if you're going to PPF it... why not just get a wrap?? And then you wont even see the factory paint. So what's the big deal?

I refuse to buy another Model 3 until it has powershare, better paint, and redesigned HVAC. IMO 2024 isn't good enough to upgrade to - i want more meaningful upgrades.
Crazy how Tesla (Fremont) paint is so bad. People haven't complained about Shanghai paint quality.
Bonkers that we are seeing panels with not enough paint. The worlds must technology advanced car company and can't get the basics right. It actually seems like paint quality has gotten worse in the last 5 years.
When I test drove a 5N the gear simulation and fake exhaust was fun. But I don't know if I would actually use it if I owned the car.
I’d love to pick one of these up, but I can’t stand the dark gray, and am not willing to pay $8k for a different color. I’ll keep waiting with my 2020 stealth performance.
I hear that the top end acceleration is far stronger than the original M3P
I lemon law'd my blue model 3 last year the paint was so bad lmao
Feel like I know the answer... but for such a long shop duration, did they offer a loaner?
Feel like I know the answer... but for such a long shop duration, did they offer a loaner?
As others have said, the 3 point turn is available for S/X, and it works exceptionally well in my experience
What's wrong with the current HVAC system? Just curious
Yeah and get wrecked by the price adjustments like a lot of people who are deep in negative equity on the 2023 model 3s and model Ys
I agree. I have a 2019 M3P and was considering upgrading to the new one so I could transfer my “FULL SELF DRIVING” but the new one had the same annoying left side dash rattle/buzz when going over rough roads. It’s caused by the body of the car touching the plastic that the speakers are in. Drives me insane. I decided I didn’t want an upgrade.
Yeah the wife’s 2023 Y price dropped by like $20k one month after we bought hers. Oops.
It stinks
Glad to hear. I forget how to drive other cars a little more every day with my Tesla. The park on seatbelt removal feature has me walking away from my wifes Genisys while it's still running all the time.
This was my experience when I test drove one. I just kept my old M3P.
Yeah, they gave me a m3 loaner.
[deleted]
Is it just weak or are you talking about the controls
Here in Australia we get the Shanghai build cars with the slower LG battery packs which is a drawback, but I have to say my 2024 M3P is pretty much flawlessly put together.
No.. it literally smells like unwashed feet after a 12 hour hike
I cant speak for all years but my 22 is ROCK solid from China. The build quality is great zero rattles. WHEN they upgrade the battery (and hopefully fix the led light strip issue) then yes, a Silver on White M3P is in the cards.
Innocent question lead up here: does every person here who complains about price drops lowering car equity usually change cars frequently, as in NOT drive a car till it gives you enough problems or dies? The innocent question: do these same people also complain about the economy?
The point is to have a mode to enable our disable depending the mood :)
In the US version yes, not in the EU version.
I would rather own a Chevy Bolt than any Tesla that Musk is related to. The bottom is dropping out of the prices of Teslas as we speak.
My daughter want a car, so I said let me get her the 2019 M3P and get the new one as from my short test and review looked good, FSD transfered and got 1.99 with $1000 discount was not bad. Got the car, it has bad alignment from factory, dashboard rattles, back pillar rattles then another spots started rattles in the dashboard, the most annoying and driving me crazy the one from inside the steering.
Ew wtf? Is this a well-known thing?
Oh yeah, Google "Model 3 stinky ac".
Did it come like that or develop over time?
Over a year or so. It's the worst whenever the AC cycles on/off when it's like 74f outside, or if you park the car for 5-10 minutes to run unto a shop and restart the AC.
Something about moisture and mildew, right?
I'm at 2k miles at 7/32 tread left. I believe theses are delivered with about 10/32 tread.
Im sorry. At least it’ll be fun to drive with the windows down and the stereo cranked.
Too relatable lol
So you use clear PPF because prefer the look of real paint to a wrap? And i never referred to color changing PPF/vinyl. You can buy glossy vinyl wraps that look very much like real paint.
The Sound system is better than 2019, I will blast it and rattle my ears 🤣
They are 100% the people who complain about the economy. They also buy pickups and SUVs with 18% interest and complain about gas prices
Andrew, thank you for the new phrase "Dr. Nightmare's Malfunctioning Loaded-Shotgun and Land-Mine Emporium" I will now endeavor to use this in daily conversations, both about Tesla and politics.
Yeah agreed
It starts to smell
[deleted]
NE in the US, it’s like next day practically 🥳
Yeah i get that, although i bet 99% of people would have no idea. Just like the paint blemishes. Again most people wouldn't notice a minor paint defectunless it was pointed out to them. Anyway that's all i was curious about. Even if it is a selfish vanity, i can understand why you prefer paint. It's totally fair and valid. Just trying to understand is all.
Should include that legacy model x and s cars on this version don't have an interior camera, so they still have nag.
Did you have problems with brake fade? Throttle House did when they drove it around the track. We used to be able to download the instrument test sheet, but I don't see a link for it in recent reviews. Please bring that back.
In my opinion, no it’s not. The important part is that it drives with high performance. Also no unnecessary noise means you can actually enjoy your performance more often without drawing unwanted attention.
Pop off your speaker cover or door panel and shove a piece of dense foam between the speaker and the body panel.
Uh huh. Go away.
On the new M3P I test drove? I already did this to my car, fixed it sort of, except the three (or four? Or five?) times Tesla tried to fix it they snapped off tabs that were hidden from view, and now car is out of warranty. They also ruined the a pillar covers so they had to attempt cleaning them (failed twice) and then replaced them, so I’m not taking it back to Tesla, they had no idea how to address the rattle.
Yeah, isn't that just weird?
> had the same annoying left side dash rattle/buzz [...] Drives me insane. I took this to mean you hadn't fixed it on your car. Sorry.
It’s like 90% fixed. But right now I’m in a rental model 3, and it also has the dash rattle
Very annoying. Sorry.
If you are financing a car for 5 years and the price is now 12k less 2 months or 1 month after you bought it. Wouldn’t you be pissed?
I bought the most barebones M3 RWD I could buy months before the 2023 $7500 eligibility started, but I got different incentives from work so I "overpaid" all in around $5000. Not sure where you're getting 12k from as I'm the best example of getting "screwed" by price drops . Even if your example was reduced in price difference to be more representative of real life scenarios, if you amortize the price difference over the number of years you own the car, it's negligible. It only hurts when you keep a car for 5 years or so, because the per-year price difference becomes higher. That was the point of my original comment, why do people frequently buy luxury goods even when it's not a need? >Tech is my hobby >Because I can "afford" it Whatever the reason, people who frequently buy these expensive cars, upgrade their top spec phones every 1-2 years, etc. All that shit adds up and these price drops are the least of their concerns. The spending problem is more pressing.
Fwiw, if you add FSD, the color choice is "free," and you still will qualify for the federal credit.
Thanks! I have FSD that I’d be transferring, so I’d have to pay for FSD again.
12k is real world from my coworker that bought a model 3 performance right before they dropped prices
I'm not going to search for threads from 2022 but I distinctly remember all cars being $10k overvalued, in Tesla's case at MSRP, and legacy auto via dealership adjustments. Performance trim is also a very luxury priced car, and all upper priced cars suffer similar depreciation. Anyone buying during that time should've known those prices were not realistic long term. I was one of them. I only bought during that time because I had a work incentive that negated not having the fed tax credit at the time. But again, people who buy super top of the line cars and other consumer goods frequently have no sympathy from me. If the M3P is to be kept for many years until it breaks, even $12k is not the worst in the long run spread per year.
That was dealers gouging. What Tesla is doing is ridiculous. The other car manufacturers don’t randomly move their prices. What about fsd? 10k 12k 15k. 8k. lol. It’s barely worth 8k. Real would probably 50 a month for typical 5 years ownership is what? 3k?
I have always had sports cars. Each one had its own distinct roar while tearing up windy back roads. I took a drive in my friends Porche last week and couldn't wait to get away from the noise! My 3LRP has given me an appreciation of quiet! Loud cars driving down the street annoy me more than ever now. Maybe I'm just getting old.
That's one of the best benefits I think people overlook! Then again, most people buy Teslas for other reasons than Stealth performance driving. Not me 😁
Fair point, I also appreciate these days quite streets, around London you often can hear very screaming cars in main roads in some areas and it’s so much nicer EVs in the sense of noise when walking around… my point was more to the point of the performance model to have a mode that you could enable if some mountain twisted roads sometimes, after all they are performance models and the sound can increase the sensations
The sound of the tires and wind are all I need. I call it Ludacris Zen.
I don't really buy consumer goods as an investment, so no, not really. If I am willing to pay the price, then I am willing to pay the price. This shit is inevitable if you want to be an early adopter, so why let it get to you?
Ended up picking one up today, used with 7k miles for 47k, 4 months old
So these tires last 5k miles? Insanity.
No it doesn’t.
Since Covid there have been many dealers charging ADMs of $5-10K & in some unusual cases, as much as $25K. ADMs are understood though as buyer of these cars realize they are paying that premium to have the car NOW, (usually) before anybody else, and are willing to eat that extra cost. Teslas, OTOH, have been bouncing THEIR own MSRPs all over the map. I can't recall that EVER happening before, especially across ALL car models. A "hot" model here and there, sure, but no across the board. https://preview.redd.it/9ew684pa0o3e1.png?width=4480&format=png&auto=webp&s=14afa2fd51e53fc20f718db82ca4bfbf798ba213
Sorry ? Price for the '24 M3P is 54,990 so ANYTHING you add will take you over the $55K threshold to get the $7500 EV credit. ONLY the gray car ($0 paint cost) qualifies.
"Loophole". FSD is a software option that doesn't affect the credit. Play with the configurator on the cash price and rebates with the red one with fsd and without. The credit will appear on the fsd one. EDIT: Just did this myself: RED M3P - NOFSD + Fees: $58,630 RED M3P + FSD ($8000) + Fees: $57,130 Est. Purchase Price $64,630 Federal Tax Credit -$7,500 As soon you click the FSD Box, the checkbox to include the savings above wil change from: Include est. 5-year gas savings of $5,000 to: Include est. incentives of $7,500 and 5-year gas savings of. I did not check gas savings, just the $7500 tax.
Firstly, thanks for the numbers. I know this stuff takes time. As \*I\* understand it, in order to receive the $7500 FED EV credit, the bottom line cost of the car BEFORE taking the credit must be $55,000 or less. Anything over that and you can't take the credit. Your RED - NOFSD + Fees include the Destination fee and Order Fee $250, BOTH of which do NOT count toward the $55K limit. So forget those fees. As for checking the box for the EV credit OR gas savings goes, I believe this is just a configurator/estimator to give you an idea of what the vehicle will cost - it is not a final Bill of Sale. It does NOT appear to be checking ANY calcs for the buyer's bottom line price, or eligibility FOR the credit. It's just a "worksheet". Not sure why you added the red paint but you're at 56,990 before anything else. We're over the EV limit already. FSD is irrelevant as that just adds MORE to the cost. And even if that $8K is "removed" because of the free promotional offer, it's +8K for the FSD and then -$8K because of the free trial. So, net-net, it's $0 added. The gas savings is COMPLETELY BOGUS. It's a marketing ploy, as in "Hey, look, buying this car will save you $5K over the next 5 years on FUEL. How can you NOT buy it ?" LMAO The gas savings have nothing to do with the out-the-door PRICE of the car, it will not show anywhere on the Bill of Sale, and it certainly does NOT come OFF the price. So, as I see it, we are at 56,990 (Red). Full stop. NO EV credit. Want gray ? Sure, $2K less, $54,990 and take the $7500 off the price. I \*think\* I've got this correct but I'm in no way an expert, especially regarding Tesla. And thanks again for your effort. If I'm wrong, I'll be very happy !!! LOL
Maybe I made it more complicated that it needed it be. I included the destination fees and whatnot because that was in the total, I know they don't count towards the $55k for limit. I don't care about the gas savings, I mentioned it because the $7500 credit appears under that section. If you don't qualify for it, there is only the gas savings check box, if you do, the $7500 appears. Remember this is a point of sale discount, Tesla will take the $7500 off at delivery, there is no need to do a tax refund. Bottom line is, If i recall correctly, the wording of the law (paraphrasing) is for added options that are physical attached to the car, IE car paint, different seats, etc. Software is not. But don't take my word for it, here an recent example: [https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModel3/comments/1e6us7n/comment/ldyjvea/](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModel3/comments/1e6us7n/comment/ldyjvea/)
Thanks for that thread. I see the disconnect on my part now. You said ""Loophole". FSD is a software option that doesn't affect the credit" I guess I didn't take that as meaning the FSD $8K software did NOT count towards the $55K limit to qualify. So I took a peek at that thread you linked to just now and saw that in that thread a poster claimed FSD did NOT count towards the $55K limit. I GOOGLED the question and got enough references that back up his claim. That makes your numbers make perfect sense. BUT, I DON'T want FSD - so adding FSD makes my out-of-pocket $55K. I want it to be $47,500. I'm on a budget. I like to drive the car when I'm in it. I don't want to be a passenger in my own car. LOL So I get what you were saying. Thanks again. BTW, am I the only one that thinks reddit's emojis are terrible. LMAO
Lol np. The original response to the above poster was that he didn't want to pay $8k for color choice, because he was losing the credit. So I responded that you could get the color for and still get the credit - you just have to shell out for FSD, effectively getting FSD for "only" (lo) $6000 if you wanted the most expensive color choices. But you are right, Tesla still takes your money. This is the only thing stopping me from upgrading to a highland M3P - I want the red but same as you, don't want to FSD either lol.
Birds of a feather I guess. I thought a decent option would be to buy the gray car and get it wrapped. There's a place not far from me that's supposed to do really good job for about $3K, < half of the savings,,,,, so not too bad. LOL
Even better thing about these is you can wait 3 years or less and buy them almost new at half price
