Idk how I feel about this. I’ve got a SR 2024 M3 and I’m getting fomo

fredean01 2024-10-03 00:53

I've got an order in for the SR in Canada.. wondering if I should cancel and wait it out.

Otto_the_Autopilot 2024-10-03 01:00

Lol, the headline is framed much differently than the post in r/electricvehicles

Juice_Box_Chruch 2024-10-03 01:02

Huh. Glad I leased :)

candidcherry 2024-10-03 01:04

I got the SR 2023 bro. Feel left out too. Except I love my 3 and am mixed how I feel about the new front end. I’m getting the boost LFP one day

nothisenberg 2024-10-03 01:05

I’m in Canada too. They still have the RWD here I just checked. So not all is bad. For me it was about the money. Made more sense to go with the cheapest one.

nothisenberg 2024-10-03 01:06

I love the new front end. It’s one of the reasons I got it. Never liked the old ones look. I guess I was in the minority

jacob6875 2024-10-03 01:13

Price last year made the RWD worth it. I paid 27k out the door after tax credits

fredean01 2024-10-03 01:14

>Made more sense to go with the cheapest one. Same here.. which is why I'm also worried if I cancel, they put out the RWD LR but it's like $5k more lolll

Mundane-Tennis2885 2024-10-03 01:17

Have we ever had the LR RWD in Canada?

Salty_Leather42 2024-10-03 01:19

4680 based maybe ?

NoobyImpulse 2024-10-03 01:21

Replaced? Or discontinued? The LR RWD has been around for months.

NatKingSwole19 2024-10-03 01:25

Guessing this move was to make it eligible for the $7500.

MexicanSniperXI 2024-10-03 01:26

Of course. They hate Tesla, but when it comes to the chargers that’s a different story haha

mflboys 2024-10-03 01:31

I mean, this headline is pretty misleading, is it not? It almost makes it sound like the SR RWD is getting updated or a new battery, but in reality that trim just got discontinued.

fredean01 2024-10-03 01:32

Not sure, but if it's the only model coming out of Fremont, and we can only import from Fremont, it would make sense that we get it eventually.

MexicanSniperXI 2024-10-03 01:33

Doesn’t sound misleading to me? But then again maybe because I knew it was referring to the new LR RWD model.

An-Indian-In-The-NBA 2024-10-03 01:38

I mean, its cheaper and objectively better than the SR right now because of the tax credit. So why would anyone want to order it right now?

feurie 2024-10-03 01:38

They both existed for a while now. Just cancelling the cheap one.

VIPTicketToHell 2024-10-03 01:56

Does the OG 2018 Model 3 count?

yhsong1116 2024-10-03 02:00

Lr rwd has always been the longest range

Cacho665 2024-10-03 02:16

Is something wrong with the LFP?

geminiwave 2024-10-03 02:17

Why is the LRAWD now about the same speed as the old LRRWD?????

KamiPigeon 2024-10-03 02:21

Yes, the first Model 3s in Canada were RWD Long Range.

Ill-Professional2914 2024-10-03 02:26

LFP cells are primarily sourced from China and that makes it ineligible for tax credit. So the M3 LR variant which is cheaper than SR with LFP when tax credits are factored in. On top of it, US hiked tariffs on ev cars and batteries imported from China beginning Sep 27th.

dzh 2024-10-03 02:28

Why no one makes LFP batteries in US?

nmessina17 2024-10-03 02:39

Ford was supposed to build a plant in Virginia to build LFP cells. But because the Chinese control a lot of the design around LFP Ford partnered with a Chinese company on the plant. Well every trailer park genius, who really could have used the manufacturing jobs, started an uproar because there was a Chinese company coming in and they don’t trust the Chinese blah blah blah. Ford was doing the right thing by partnering and licensing the Chinese LFP tech instead of just stealing like the Chinese generally do.

Suitable_Switch5242 2024-10-03 02:51

It misses the fact that the base price without the tax credit went up. This also affects the entry lease price. Also that there’s no new model, just a removal of an existing model.

Suitable_Switch5242 2024-10-03 02:52

Leasing was cheaper on the SR.

Suitable_Switch5242 2024-10-03 02:52

These are the same old LR packs they’ve been using all along.

greenthing 2024-10-03 03:06

I’m looking at getting an EV, probably Tesla, and that subreddit is beyond dumb for getting an unbiased opinion on any EV. A guy even recommended a R1T once for someone asking about an equivalent size and price of a TM3.

spawnakshay 2024-10-03 03:11

Same here. Ordered RWD but confused if I should get a car that is discontinued already.

Otto_the_Autopilot 2024-10-03 03:11

Agreed.

Technical_Act3541 2024-10-03 03:25

It's because of the tax credit. They probably weren't selling any when you can get the US made panasonic cells in the LR rwd that qualify.

Technical_Act3541 2024-10-03 03:26

We got LFP with the tax credit last year.

SleepEatLift 2024-10-03 03:38

Why do we gotta be divisive? There's not negative opinion whatsoever in the post/article you're referencing. We don't need to fabricate opinions to create in-fighting. [This post](https://old.reddit.com/r/electricvehicles/comments/1fukn42/tesla_model_3s_cheapest_trim_discontinued_in_us/) is the *headline* from EV Insider. It has nothing to do with the sub /r/electricvehicles nor their opinions.

SleepEatLift 2024-10-03 03:40

Yeah, if anything it is this post, with a user selected title, that is misleading. The EV Insider article posted to /r/electricvehicles is just that... the EV Insider title.

many people prefer the usage and charge cycles from LFP

TuroSaave 2024-10-03 03:57

Maybe they're planning on bringing back the SR with US made batteries or they're trying to further distinquish the Model 3 from their upcoming more afforable vehicle(s).

g1aiz 2024-10-03 04:06

If you look at the sales numbers, almost nobody is going for S/X anymore.

An-Indian-In-The-NBA 2024-10-03 04:25

There are of course some people who care a little bit, but 99% of buyers don't know what LFP even means.

[deleted] 2024-10-03 04:27

Heavier, worse in the cold, and sourced from China. With these changes they can avoid importing Chinese battery packs for more sweet tax incentives.

thisclassyman 2024-10-03 04:35

By 363mi they mean 285mi

Jumpy_Implement_1902 2024-10-03 05:29

After maintenance and insurance costs, they probably wouldn’t be too far off.

I am a CPA candidate and this is false. If you take the full tax credit and it turns out you don't qualify when you submit your federal taxes for the year of the vehicle's purchase, the IRS will claw back the tax credit by adding the $7,500 to your tax bill.

markn6262 2024-10-03 06:17

So true, discovered quickly there is a hypocritical bias, in that sub, against Elon and for Superchargers. lol

MexicanSniperXI 2024-10-03 06:27

Yeah hahaha they make it pretty obvious. But it’s like anything else, it’s whatever benefits them right? 😂 their own chargers are unusable so they gotta use the ones owned by the person they hate 😂

mocoyne 2024-10-03 06:30

Recent test at 71 mph showed the long range awd getting 370 miles until empty (rated for around 340). These would likely do near 400.

Sensitive_Explosive 2024-10-03 06:59

Given this car wasn't available for the tax credit in the US market, I suspect this model wasn't selling well at all in the US so from that perspective it makes sense to eliminate it. But it would be great if they started making Model 3's with updated more energy dense LFP batteries that are made in the US so they can get the tax credit. Based upon my research, there does appear to be a genuine safety advantage of reduced catastrophic fire with the LFP batteries. So despite having less energy density, the LFP batteries have a safety advantage to go alongside increased cycle count so it is unfortunate that this model was discontinued but not many Tesla customers are probably even aware of the relative safety of the different battery chemistries.

[deleted] 2024-10-03 07:46

[deleted]

zsxdflip 2024-10-03 07:59

Well now the LFP battery is discontinued so that isn't applicable either anymore

gburgwardt 2024-10-03 08:47

Protectionism

gburgwardt 2024-10-03 08:48

Yeah but that about if you drive like that guy, windows down at 80 mph???

Confident-Door3461 2024-10-03 09:15

Oh don't worry the patent for lfp batteries expired so we'll soon be seeing Tesla manufactured lfp batteries on the model 3 soon.

katieberry 2024-10-03 09:19

As someone who does not qualify for the tax credit: I’m definitely not spending that sort of money on a car! And in fact I have an SR RWD Model 3. Most everyone I know over the income limit has also opted for a cheaper Model 3.

74orangebeetle 2024-10-03 11:21

The batteries themselves are fine...but the U.S. government just increased tariffs on then to 25% (up from 7%) and cars with them don't get the tax credit. So because of government penalties and incentives they don't currently make sense.

KymbboSlice 2024-10-03 11:27

> You no longer have to “qualify” anymore. Everyone gets full qualification. This is false information, for anyone reading who may be about to buy a new car. You do not qualify for the federal tax credit if your adjusted gross income is over 150k individually or 300k if filing jointly. The IRS will come looking for your $7500 back if you make over these limits and took the credit at the dealership.

candidcherry 2024-10-03 12:52

Lol I paid 38.5k after taxes. Still worth it imo. It’s a fantastic car

candidcherry 2024-10-03 12:57

You’re not in the minority. It’s hard to say. People who had the previous gen tend towards to like the previous; but a lot more seem to like the new one I feel like the new headlights exacerbate the one issue I have with the Model 3. The cabin green box is like a big bubble plopped on the car, ruining its sleek looks. That said the Highland Model 3P is a stunner. Seems like it’s still limited by the brakes and some suspension tuning from being a true enthusiast car which makes it easier to be practical and not upgrade. I will still envy you M3P owners though lol

MikeInCali 2024-10-03 13:18

If they could make it bigger…it would be! I hated all my Xs because they still had the aggressive slope like a coupe making the trunk not really SUV-ish and the FWD were garbage. I went Rivian R1S (which is a great, useful box) and Model Y. I’m hoping they make a CyberSUV or something that’s bigger than the X and with normal doors.

Suitable_Switch5242 2024-10-03 13:21

What maintenance or insurance is cheaper on an R1T than a Model 3?

[deleted] 2024-10-03 13:38

Like it matters when there is a 10 year warranty on the battery... Lol

TxTransplant72 2024-10-03 14:01

Those are the uneducated…can’t help that. We have an LFP which should last 10 years of low maintenance very safe driving. I’ll pass down to one of the boys in or after college. It’s fast enough, without being ‘too fast’ like most other Teslas…0-60 in 5.9 sec is same as a BMW 335d or older Porsche Boxster — plenty quick…

TxTransplant72 2024-10-03 14:03

Tesla was supposedly making their own soon with equipment bought from CATL. We’ll see if that pushes ahead, but until the supply chain is more Us focused, it can’t get the tax credit. Still makes a ton of sense for the robotaxis and cheaper variants…so I hope they push ahead.

Kristosh 2024-10-03 14:44

LRAWD is quoted as 4.2s right now. That is what it has always been. Compared to the original LRAWD which started around 5.1s and decreased to just under 5.0s with the 5% power bump updates. The current LRRWD is 4.9s which is basically identical to the original LRRWD?

zsxdflip 2024-10-03 17:07

So which battery you get depends on whether you say you qualify for the credit or not? Interesting, I wonder if there's even enough people who don't qualify to justify importing the LG batteries.

popornrm 2024-10-03 18:53

The long range rwd is cheaper with the tax credit though.

popornrm 2024-10-03 18:55

And now you can opt for used or the long range rwd. Cheers!

popornrm 2024-10-03 18:56

You do have to qualify…. 🤦‍♂️ r/confidentlyincorrect

[deleted] 2024-10-03 19:31

[deleted]

BranTheUnboiled 2024-10-03 19:39

You're confusing the fact that buyers longer need 7.5k in tax liability in order to utilize the full 7.5k tax credit, with not needing to qualify. You still have to qualify, but even if you have zero tax liability, you can get the full tax credit.

okwellactually 2024-10-03 20:29

Have a 2023 Model 3 SR RWD and just picked up a 2024 Model 3 LR RWD. I'm blown away by the range on the LR RWD. Went on a road trip today so charged to 100% and got the full 363 mile range (most of any Tesla other than the S which is 402). That's huge having an EV as cheap as the 3 is right now.

[deleted] 2024-10-03 21:11

[deleted]

BranTheUnboiled 2024-10-03 21:38

Yeah, that's what people meant. I agree, but I've seen some ineligible people salty over it.

crimxona 2024-10-03 22:43

And only for the US. LFP 3 is still available in Canada, with production coming from Fremont after the Canadian tariffs on Chinese vehicles after Oct 1

KeonBills 2024-10-03 23:39

I think this points to possibly new battery tech with longer range for the other models??? Fingers crossed

Careless_Plant_7717 2024-10-04 00:42

Because section 301 tariffs on Chinese LFP batteries (good luck finding high quality, inexpensive ones elsewhere) going from 7.5% to 25% and tax credit likely this would have become the expensive model. No point in continuing it.

hogbear 2024-10-04 00:50

Tesla 363 = 298

Empty_Wallaby5481 2024-10-05 03:33

And just like that LFP is gone from Canada due to tariffs on Chinese batteries. Canada line up now matches US - no Model Y LFP, or Model 3 LFP. Now least expensive Teslas are Model 3 LR RWD and Model Y LR RWD.

Arcane_123 2024-10-05 04:33

Almost no one qualifies for the incentive. Coming from Silicon Valley though. So M3 RWD SR is much cheaper than LR. And LR is not really needed for anything.

Arcane_123 2024-10-05 04:35

I feel the majority of people who buy Teslas won't qualify. It is an expensive car after all.

2muchmonehandass 2024-10-05 08:47

I would be very disappointed to hear if Tesla cancels existing SR orders. They should honor the price.

[deleted] 2024-10-05 10:47

[deleted]

2muchmonehandass 2024-10-05 10:48

That would be shameful

Gaff1515 2024-10-06 11:04

No it’s tariff related. Tariff on the lfp battery from china is going from 7.5% to 25%

Gaff1515 2024-10-06 11:06

^ if you qualify

popornrm 2024-10-06 16:33

And most buyers do… and if you don’t then you probably weren’t getting the lower range model anyways.

candidcherry 2024-10-07 13:35

I really hope so. I like that LFP’s are more idiot proof and are tolerant to high temperatures. Hoping they one day make one that crests 300 miles

lauranyc77 2024-10-13 00:51

Everyone qualifies for the credit if you lease

sergedg 2024-10-15 12:00

Any thoughts on this LR vs. AWD? In other words, take a bit of extra range vs. AWD and a bit better performance? I've always driven AWD since the early Model S 85D.
